Mushroom Cheese Omelette
Sarah N.

Healthy takeout breakfast (surprise!) Since having to make a few dietary adjustments, eating out has not been the easiest. However, I was very pleased when my husband brought home breakfast from a local favorite among Lakevilleans: Buckboard He ordered me a low-sodium mushroom omelette with a hint of cheddar and side of fruit (the menu item below had substitutions, fruit was subbed for toast). Also - this was take-out, so I got to enjoy in the comfort of home. But a beautiful breakfast and one I felt quite comfortable eating. Please note - the restaurant does have the atmosphere of a diner - so, not a very romantic spot. However, the staff will work hard to ensure a solid meal.

Ruben and Fries

Cost - $20-$25 per person Diet Coke: Available Meal: Ruben (subbed for Texas bread as they were out of rye) fries and a Diet Coke. First I have to say the staff is very friendly. Made me feel very comfortable being here for the first time. I wanted to check this place out for lunch and it was pretty good. The Ruben was delicious even though they were out of rye bread. Fries were crisp and Diet Coke cold. The restaurant feels like a small town dinner. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a quick breakfast or lunch.

Garbage skillet - good

Came for breakfast/brunch on a saturday at 11am. Server was ok, she wasnt bad or mean, she just wasnt very friendly or upbeat. I was expecting a more inviting tone of voice, instead she was just very neutral and short , to the point. We ordered a Western Omelet , it came out with no potatoes in it, they brought me a side of potatoes after i asked for them. my husband got the garbage skillet, he said it was good, his toast was pretty well burnt though, also got 1 pancake, it was good, tastes like regular pancakes youd make at home, nothing special, ive had better, but not bad. Overall i would come back, mostly because its one of the only breakfast places in this area.

Stopped for breakfast on the way to AHS Convention in Ames, Iowa. Ratings on Yelp were pretty high so knew we would eat well. The parking lot was full, the interior was dated but clean and the hostess & waitress were both friendly and efficient. We had our food 10 minutes after ordering! Wow that's fast. I love Eggs Benedict with crispy hash browns so I went with it. Huge and delicious! I could only finish half and I hate wasting food. I wish they served half orders, and it would be fair to charge more then half price.

Good comfort food. I had the trash scramble and it was very tasty. You get a large portion for the price. The staff was nice and helpful. Stop on by.

Yup ... just go there! Wait if you need ... order a skillet breakfast (any one) - yum! Or the pork chops ...perfect! Order the homemade patty sausage (or 2 orders) because it's wonderful. Perfect breakfast spot ... just GO. Service was great, coffee kept coming & it's great!

My quintessential breakfast item is eggs Benedict and cappuccino- this is how I begin my evaluation of good food. So it was a toss up between The Better Half and the Lakeville Brewing Co which share the same parking lot. AI told me to go to Lakeville Brewing for the Benedict if I expect it to be done right. However it said The Better half will have way better cappuccino. Entryway into The Better Half was nice . The ambiance reminded me of High Hat on Selby on Cathedral Hill in St Paul. However the warmth wasn't there at The Better Half. The big bar had a few people sitting there, bartender looked at us but didn't say anything. No welcome - no smile nothing. No host at the front door- there was only a sign saying "please wait to be seated". We stood there for about two minutes until someone came from the back to seat us. Our server was a different person, she seemed warm and personable. They should put her in charge as hostess. First impressions are everything. Also train the bartender to be talkative, that's usually why people go to bars- they know at least the bartender will be friendly. Cappuccino was decent and good sized, no complaints there. The Benedicts were executed poorly. The eggs were hard boiled on both dishes. Hollandaise was thick, tasteless and slopped all over the plate. It didn't look appetizing - we had to send it back. With that said the ham was a good thick slice and the potatoes were fried up well. But there was nothing special about the potatoes. Due to poor execution of the eggs Benedict and hollandaise, coupled with the stoic bartender who was unwelcoming- I'd have to give this place a 1.5 star. It's unfortunate since I want to cheer for the small town restaurants. There's so much they could offer in personal touch and experience. Unfortunately this experience left us feeling like "if this is the better half, then I don't want meet the other half." Management needs to step up their game, it's not fair to the workers to let guests start off with a poor experience and then have the food quality continue to degrade the experience. The server never gets a chance to earn a great tip because the bartender, lack of host greeting and poor execution of food overshadows the server who was trying her best. We tipped her well anyway but this is why the lengthy review.. For a breakfast place you gotta get your eggs right. That's 101 cooking.

They have awesome, unique drink options - especially seasonally. Some seasonal drinks and flavors nail it, but more often than not, I wouldn't know what the flavor was if I didn't order it as they just don't have enough of the flavor. My biggest complaint is cleanliness as it often looks like some deep cleaning is in order. They roast their own coffee which is awesome, though if you're a "coffee snob" like we are, we've noticed their beans are flat so we don't tend to buy them unfortunately. Service is always super friendly and I still prefer going here to a chain. They also often have tea drinks on their seasonal menu which I love that they cater to tea drinkers as well.

The breakfast items I purchased were a breakfast sandwich which is fully customizable and the avocado toast. The breakfast sandwich was really good but the avocado toast wasn't my favorite. I think the avocado mash was a little too bitter. Opt for a breakfast sandwich and you won't be disappointed.

FANTASTIC food, drinks, service, patio area, and ambiance!…read more I'm from Arizona and visit my in-laws in central MN 1-2x per year. However, this trip we had a wedding southeast of "the cities" where wife and our two kids loved that menu online and decided to check it out on our way to the wedding the next day. Honestly, this has been my fav restaurant in all of Minnesota. Ribeye, walleye, pretzel, and drinks were perfect! Unfortunately, I likely won't be in the area ever again to revisit it; however, we liked it so much I had to post a positive review. Cheers from AZ.

Oh boy...where to start? I guess I will start with the pros…read more First, I always like to mention what day and time I visited a restaurant. I decided to get takeout for lunch on a Monday afternoon. I have been on a kick lately trying Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwiches, or in Barley and Vine's case, the Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich. That was the main reason I wanted to stop by for lunch. I placed a to-go order, but we have also dined inside several times before. Starting with the positives, the staff is always very friendly and welcoming. There is really no issue there. The staff is fantastic. The overall vibe and ambiance of the restaurant are incredibly nice as well. It leans toward a fancier, higher-end, upscale atmosphere. I honestly think that may be part of the reason several reviews are so positive and why people may perceive the food as being higher quality or better tasting. We have also had brunch here more than once. We are generally not brunch people, but we have really enjoyed the brunch items we have ordered in the past. I am hoping we can come back for brunch again, and maybe I can eventually write an updated review with a higher rating. So why only 3/5 stars? My most recent to-go visit left me incredibly disappointed. To start, the Tennessee "Hot" Chicken Sandwich is not hot at all. "Hot" is absolutely not the correct word to use. It should probably just be called a Tennessee Chicken Sandwich, and honestly, even using "Tennessee" or "Nashville" does not seem accurate. This seemed like a basic Fried Chicken Sandwich made from a frozen chicken filet with far more breading than actual chicken. It is not the most pleasant photo to look at, but I attached a picture of the partially eaten sandwich to this review. You can clearly see how little chicken meat there actually was. They put white BBQ sauce on the sandwich, but I do not really have anything particularly good or bad to say about it. It was just kind of there. It did not improve the sandwich, but it did not necessarily make it worse either. The fries were also just fine. They seemed to be lacking flavor and may have been slightly burnt. Speaking of overcooked, the chicken sandwich also tasted overcooked. Overall, the sandwich and fries were simply not very good. I would never order the sandwich again, and I would probably substitute the fries for a different side in the future. Another issue is the repeated delay with to-go orders. I have ordered takeout from Barley and Vine maybe three or four times, and every single time the order has been late. I usually arrive only one or two minutes before the scheduled pickup time. Sometimes I even wait in the parking lot because I do not want to arrive too early. Every single time, the order is not ready at the scheduled time. This time, I only had to wait about six minutes past the pickup time. However, during my previous to-go experience a few weeks earlier, I waited more than 15 minutes past the scheduled pickup time. This has also happened during other visits. Finally, everything usually comes down to whether the meal is worth the price. I paid $17.77 for the Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries. That included a 48 cent credit card surcharge. They add a 3% surcharge to all credit card payments, which automatically leaves a bad taste in my mouth at any restaurant. It's not something they have to do, to support higher wages or whatever they want to tell you. It's something they CHOOSE to do. Other restaurants don't do, or they simply increase their menu prices 3%. Which I would rather have than yet another fee in this world. Regardless, the meal was simply not worth the price. The sandwich was not flavorful, was not spicy, did not contain enough chicken, and tasted overcooked. The fries also seemed overcooked and lacked flavor. It was not a good value. You could drive a little farther down the road to Dave's Hot Chicken and get a more flavorful meal, a larger portion, and a lower price. This review feels harsh, but I am hoping it comes across as constructive criticism if management happens to read it. Overall, I cannot recommend ordering takeout from Barley and Vine. I cannot recommend the Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich, and I do not particularly recommend the fries either. They were not absolutely terrible, but they were not great. I am still hoping to visit Barley and Vine again. I will likely avoid ordering takeout because it has consistently been a poor experience. However, I hope we have a better experience the next time we dine inside, and I will definitely be ordering something else.

During the late afternoon it's a fairly bright and family friendly spot, but I have been to the one in White Bear Lake at night and it was very dim and moody later in the night; great for a date! One glass of Apothic Inferno Red Blend for me. A glass of Chemistry Pinot Noir for my guy. I have to say that I have tried their Signature-Tinis at the White Bear location in the past and thought they were fantastic. Cute, fun and delicious!! Our wine came out fast, and soon we were greeted by our server. He did not introduce himself, he was super quick to just ask if we were ready to order. I am not sure if this is because he is busy, or if it's early and the mood of the restaurant isn't fancy enough for him to be more inviting yet. We did have our orders ready so we're able to list them off to him quickly. He did not ask us any questions we just knew the information he would want so gave it to him; such as how our steak should be cooked and what sides we would like. We ordered a Valentine's Day special appetizer - Baked Brie with Raspberry and Baguette We ordered the Grilled Vegetable and Bull Bite salad to share. We both ordered the Valentine's Day special appetizer - Grilled Filet and Lobster. Mine rare, my boyfriend's medium rare. I chose smashed potatoes as my side and he chose quinoa side. After our disappointing experience with the person that took our order, we were greeted with the server that would be taking care of us for the evening. He was extremely pleasant. Immediately introducing himself, James. Told us that his co worker had took our order and that I was in and asked us what wine we were drinking. He was very friendly. I felt better about the experience after this, because if that first guy was our server and that was the kind of experience we were going to have tonight I would have been extremely disappointed. Especially after I've had good times at the White Bear location and talked this place up to my boyfriend. Baked Brie with Raspberry and Baguette - I loved this appetizer. Beware it comes with Walnuts if you are allergic. I was able to scrape the off the top of the Brie before eating it and survived. The gooey center was perfect for their tiny crostinis. I could eat this all day. Grilled Vegetable and Bull Bite salad - not enough grilled vegetables all I found was asparagus and onion. Although the blue cheese and salad dressing were incredible. Grilled Filet and Lobster - They had our steaks mixed up but that was no biggie. My rare steak ended up on my boyfriend's plate with his quinoa but we just swapped them. The steak was good but nothing impressive. Smashed potatoes - same, the green beans had an interesting twist that I felt like resembled more of an asian style dish, so an interesting combo. The lobster was cooked to perfection and was AMAZING! Great job on that!! My boyfriend's quinoa side was way better than the smashed potatoes on my plate so I'd recommend ordering them as your side dish.
