Regular Beef
Caroline S.

DELICIOUS beef sandwiches! From the bread to the beef to the sauces -- everything was satisfying. We got them to go and it travelled really well. I'd recommend getting a bit of extra sauce for the beef to help you get through the center. Their onion rings were also super yummy, maintaining its crunch even after a 20 minute commute. However, their fries did not survive the ride and were a dry/not crispy when we dug in. I'd skip the fries and get more onion rings next time. Their service was also wonderful. The guy at the front desk was super friendly and responsive when I arrived to pick up the order. He even gave us a 2L on the house (we had a large order of 9 sandwiches), which was very kind gesture. A great place to stop by if you're craving some north shore beef sandwiches. I'd definitely want to come back and have them fresh.

Regular beef, 3way

*INSERT EXPLETIVES HERE* because that's all I kept saying as I was eating this!! Everything about this place looks like your typical "pizza & sub" shop but there's something special going on here... We came in on a Saturday for lunch and my husband being a North Shore native, knew exactly what he was doing when he ordered us two "regular beefs, 3-way, on onion rolls." I really have no words to accurately describe how amazing this sandwich is; the flavor, portion size, and execution is absolute perfection. The tender pink beef melts in your mouth and the bun is toasted so magically that it doesn't become soggy. Is it messy? Yes. Will it clog your arteries sooner than later? Probably. It is it worth every bite and calorie? Definitely! I highly recommend treating yourself to one of these :)

The bun was crispy the whole way through, sandwich big enough to be called a cake, and it was HOT Definitely worth checking out if you haven't.

Chicken Kabob Menu Item

We've gone to Nick's Place a handful of times and do like their "The Porky" Pizza. The pizza is massive and each slice is a meal, we like to crisp it up more in our air fryer before eating. The 3 stars are for the pizza, it's better than a few other places we've tried in the area. We've also tried the Hawaiian and the Buffalo Chicken. This review is to warn you NOT to order a salad from here!!!! I would give this place 1 star if my only experience was with this salad. I was wanting a lighter option, so opted for a Chicken Kabob Salad. Some pizza places have this down, but unfortunately Nick's does not. The iceberg lettuce was extremely bitter, more than half were the super bitter white pieces. The amount of toppings for a $15 salad was laughable, one thin pepper ring, the TINIEST piece of cucumber, no carrots as stated in the description, 2 tomatoes, and 2 olives (i threw away the green one before I took the picture). The pita bread maybe had potential to be good but mine was undercooked and smelled and tasted like raw flour. There was a great amount of chicken on the salad and the greek dressing was fine (but not great). I picked the chicken out and ate that for dinner. Skip the salads!

Ok. I never had the other nicks place pizza, I don't know if they are related, but this place wasn't bad man! When you first walk in it smells like a nice pizza shop. Good start. Staff? Nice! Very helpful. The pizza looked the part for sure. It was a bit too thick for me. Not my typical style of pizza but it was good. It almost tasted like an elevated version of Pizza Hut! Like the old way they made pizza. Not the new way. The lasagna was pretty amazing as well. Sauce had a nice sweetness. The fried platter was w.e. The kebab chicken pizza was actually awesome. A bit over greasy, heavy handed on the cheese, but the chicken had good flavor. And they gave you big a*# pieces. I appreciated that. Def a good neighborhood shop.

After hearing so many good things said about Nick's Place, I decided to give it a shot myself. Boy do I regret that. Ordered a few beefs for myself and my family, onion rings, fries and jalapeño poppers. Got one beef cooked medium and the other two cooked rare, all the sandwiches looked the same as far as doneness goes. The meat was also chopped to a pulp. If you still plan on eating, make sure you get it down quickly as the sauce will soak through the bun before you can even get the sandwich unwrapped. The fries were cold, floppy and overall just outright sad. The poppers were typical frozen Jalapeño poppers you can get from just about every pizza place in the country. The best item of all though had to be the onion rings, and that's only because they never even made it into my order when I picked up. Do yourself a favor and order from literally ANYWHERE else if you have hopes for an edible sandwich.

Tables and half booths are the seating arrangements. Our server, Samantha, and her back waiter, Liam, were attentive and friendly. They were available when needed but kept a low profile. We started with calamari and the pork belly with Brussels sprouts slaw (my fav). The bread service is a mix of warm white & pretzel rolls with whipped butter. Food was excellent (the lobster mac n cheese was the overall fav) amongst Mexican corn and cauliflower gratin. The mashed potatoes were excellent and sturdy! Our filets were excellent and the birthday girl had the scallops over risotto. I thought the risotto looked a little wet, but she didn't complain. The slice of flourless chocolate bd cake with candle was a nice offering. We added the vanilla bean cheesecake with blueberry compote and a PB Budino that was reportedly decadent (and easily shared between 2 people). A crème brûlée was also consumed! Cocktails were also very good and they didn't skimp on the booze!

We ordered ice water with lemon. About five minutes later, the water arrived--but without the lemons. We decided to let it go, and shortly afterward she returned to take our order. We ordered two salads: THAI PEANUT SALAD (added chicken) Napa cabbage, red cabbage, scallions, red pepper, peanut dressing, and crispy rice noodles. CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD (added shrimp) Romaine hearts, garlic croutons, shaved Romano, and creamy Caesar dressing. Then we waited. About 10-15 minutes later, our waitress stopped by to ask if we needed anything. We were fine. Another 15 minutes passed, and she checked on us again. About 10 minutes later, she stopped by once more and said she was going to check with the kitchen. The restaurant was only about half full, with plenty of open tables. We had ordered two salads--it doesn't get much simpler than that. Finally, about 45 minutes after we arrived, our lunches made their way to the table. My Classic Caesar Salad was overdressed, and the shrimp, while acceptable, was a bit dry. I didn't try the Thai Peanut Salad. Ironically, this was one of the few times I would have preferred eating at the Legal Sea Foods in Logan Airport, where they somehow manage to get good food to your table much more promptly. I doubt I'll return to this location. One tip: parking in the lot directly in front of Legal Sea Foods is very tight. I parked in the former Lord & Taylor lot around the corner, which was only a few minutes' walk away.

I made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7:00 for two. Note: I originally went to make the reservation online from their website but the availability was not good, so I called instead. Online it pretty much looked booked between 4:30 and 8:00 - I called and was able to get 7:00 without hesitation. So, make note to call if you don't see the time or range listed online. We were greeted as we entered and checked in with the host/hostess. They were friendly and polite and told us it would just be a few minutes. They brought us back to our table and had us seated shortly there after. Our waitress was great; she told us about the specials, checked in on us, and made sure everything was as expected. We ordered some bevs that were very tasty and had great presentations. Speaking of presentation, let's get on to the food. We ordered the Tomahawk, which if you don't know, is a MASSIVE piece of meat. It's a steak meant to serve two people - in reality, it serves way more than two. The presentation of the tomahawk steak plate alone was beautiful! It had a whole bunch of stuff (see pic). They bring it out for you to see, and then they take it back to the kitchen to slice. We ordered medium rare, and probably should have gone more medium but it was not too rare so it was fine. Now, at The Bancroft, it is an à la carte style meal, meaning you order sides separately and usually a few for the table. We had the carrots (one of the specials), roasted potatoes, and creamed spinach. Forgot to say when you order meat, you also get to pick two sauces - and before anything while you wait they bring you some rolls and butter. The rolls started us off on the right foot knowing the meal was going to be phenomenal. They were warm with some sea salt on top and baked to perfection. The steak was mouth watering, juicy, and flavorful. The sauces added a great touch, and the sides were wonderful. It is safe to say, we did not leave hungry! As mentioned, while tomahawk is said to serve two, we had a lot of leftovers so of course we got those packed up to go. They were very considerate with the packaging, putting items in different boxes that made sense. We unfortunately did not have room for dessert but I'm sure it would've been awesome. The Bancroft is definitely a higher scale restaurant so it is on the pricer side, but it is justified. The food tastes great, presentation is there, and service is excellent. It's a great place for special occasions, celebrations, or just because as long as you know what to expect... but with prices today, I'd rather pay this and have it be worth it than what a crappy meal is costing today!

I ordered it medium but was instead served almost rare. Nick asked me to cut into it and he himself said that it was somewhat rare so he took it back. Someone else brought the same steak back a few minutes later and parts were overcooked and parts were still medium rare. I also noticed that the table next to me sent one of their steaks back and also leaving it on their plates after it was brought back. For dessert, I had the coconut creme cake that was really good. Been going here for years, rarely disappointed. Recently they were closed for "renovations" for awhile. That might also mean they changed hands, sold out. In my experience, that is never a good sign, the new owners will surely ruin a good thing, they'll cut back on quality, raise prices, and change the recipes. My best guess is that's what happened to The Lobster Claw. Went here last week for lunch. Walked in, where am I?! They now have a big divider between the seating area and ordering. You're corralled into this area first. The giant blackboard menu is gone. Now they have a small, cramped, menu above the register. I had to squint to read it all. I gave the girl my order which she got wrong THREE times. The Calamari basket, well done I said. I always used to tell them well done because it tastes better and the breading doesn't slide off the fish. Now where do I go to pick up my food when it's done? There's a sign that say's "Takeout Pickup" next to the register. Is that all one word, or for takeout orders and picking up what you just ordered? So I wandered aimlessly out of the dividing area and into the dining area. A window at the end with a sign, "BEER AND WINE." Is that where I go or is that for ordering booze and paying for it? So I sat down at a table and waited for my number to be called. I got my food pretty quick. I asked the new kid, looks like the old staff was not there anymore, for a lid and a bag for my tiny cup of chowder, that cost $7.00, to take home. He acted like I was inconveniencing him. This is after he plopped the tray down and spilled some of the chowder broth onto the tray. Thanks a lot Junior! Sat down to eat. Calamari...not well done. In fact it looked under cooked. It was chewy, and the breading was falling off. ONE tarter sauce with it. They used to give out two and then asked you if that was enough. Saving money for the renovations are we? The fries under the Calamari were soggy, greasy, and under cooked as well. I didn't finish my meal obviously because to be frank, it sucked. Later on at home I tried the fish chowder. Maybe at least that will be the saving grace. Nope. It was the consistency of oatmeal, like it was put in a blender. Bland as well. $ 30.00 I'm out for a meal that I could have got at Market Basket for one third the price for frozen fish sticks and a can of chowder that would have tasted better than that disaster. Next time I'm in the area and want some fish, I'll be going to McDonald's for a Filet-O-Fish meal instead. And another one gone, and another one gone, another one bites the dust...don't let them get you too.
