an ice cream shop at night

Real mixed bag at Nick Charlap's. Our experience boiled down we all should have kept it simple because the staff was either unwilling or unable or just didn't give a damn to actually do anything more complex than mindlessly scoop from a container. We get there maybe fifteen or twenty minutes before they close at ten on a Thursday still with a decent crowd eating outside and waiting in line yet right away off go most of the exterior lights. So now while trying to order quasi in the dark, here's the rundown: #1 - Some kind of cinnamon ice cream. Personally I thought it smelled horrible and it looked like Pepto but the individual who ordered it much to my surprise actually dug it so whatever. #2 - Something with a lot of chocolate in it, I don't remember. Either way this one also worked. Here's where things get unhinged. #3 - The peanut butter arctic swirl could best be described as undersized with a lack of peanut butter so pronounced you would have thought I asked them for fairly dust or edible golf leaf. #4 - Easily the worst with this one. I'm always hesitant to order milkshakes at most ice cream places because to be honest most people don't have a clue how to make a good one. To me no one in their right mind wants something that has the consistency of water or that only tastes like the milk with maybe a hint of whatever ice cream flavor you supposedly, but can't taste, ordered. That's exactly what got made here. One that had zero thickness to it and tasted like milk with a bit of black raspberry flavoring. In other words completely disgusting and a total waste of money. Problem is that by the time I figured that out, lights off and no body home inside the building. So while it was a nice night to sit outside across the street in the small park that's there, the two in our group who just got scoops of the basic ice cream did alright. The two who opted for something that required a little more effort got burned, bad. Of the three places we stopped at over the weekend we were in the region Nick's was bar none the worst in terms of value for the money and especially in terms of quality of what was actually rendered.

We only had ice cream, so no thoughts on the food, but this place was perfect. Just a small stand with really great custard. I had a black raspberry/vanilla twist custard cone that was picture perfect and so good. I tried my wife's vanilla dish topped with cherry glaze and pineapple and it was great, my daughter had a chocolate custard cone with sprinkles which had a really strong/super tasty chocolate flavor. Saw a guy order a speciality sundae and it looked enormous and awesome.

Great ice cream but service can be slow at times. Your money goes a long way here! Their portion sizes are huge! They have a lot of options to choose from as well. Plus you can eat it at the picnic table right at their location or walk on over to the gazebo and enjoy your ice cream there. The ice cream is worth the wait!

I'd never before seen sourdough croissants or cheese danishes; there's an abundance of gorgeous loaves/boules for sale. (Cheese fondue supplies! Yes!!). A baker's rack to the right sells day-old bread at discounted prices (make your own croutons!) I opted for an almond (sourdough) croissant and a small coffee; I was asked if I wanted a mug or a to go cup? I was given a beautiful glazed mug - very charming! Two things worth mentioning: There's a small seating area downstairs, and five large tables upstairs. The stairs? A polite way of describing them is, "grandfathered-in". The rise/run makes it difficult to navigate if you're in thick boots, carrying a child, or have stiff knees. The pastry had a beautiful crunch. I enjoyed the almond flavor. And then I found: cherry preserves? I'm aware that "croissant et confiture" (eaten with jam) is a standard French breakfast, but it did change the mouth feel of the treat. I'd recommend this place to anyone wanting to try something earthier and beautifully executed.

When we pulled into the parking lot, it was clear. We weren't the only ones that had heard about the sale. The line for the drive through window was out into the road and blocking traffic on a side street, so we opted to go in. The line inside was bursting the doors at the seams, but we squeezed in. It was around a half hour's wait before we got to the counter and ordered our two Blizzards. Small size, one chocolate brownie and one mint Oreo. I was not expecting such a small cup of ice cream to be $5, but good thing for the sale. The brownie Blizzard was delicious from what little I was given to taste. The Mint Oreo was very poorly mixed, although I tried not to judge given the length of the line and hectic pace of the workers. All the mint flavoring and green food color was left at the bottom of the cup (You can probably see how it's missing color in the photo). The result was a sugary vanilla-like flavor for most of the treat with a slight rush of mint at the end. I'm glad for the experience, I'll say that. And if you need an ice cream treat before the seasonal stands open, DQ is probably one of your few choices.

Today I bought the two for $4 sundaes a hot fudge and strawberry. I also have the DQ app which is nice to get discounts on some treats such as $1 off any size blizzard. I have the Reese cup mini blizzard today and it was yummy. I don't like the fact all you can get is vanilla or chocolate ice cream flavors. I wish they had others but I guess they just don't do that at DQ's.
