I had been a patient of Dr. Nichols for nearly 30 years. While I always found him to be a competent physician, his bedside manner consistently left much to be desired--he often came across as condescending and dismissive.
For many years, I only saw him annually for routine physicals, so I tolerated the lack of warmth. Frankly, the hassle of finding a new primary care provider kept me from switching. However, as I've aged and developed more complex health concerns, I've needed more frequent care and attention.
During this time, I primarily saw his nurse practitioner, Helen, who is excellent--attentive, thorough, and compassionate. Unfortunately, I had to return to Dr. Nichols for several visits, and the experience was deeply frustrating.

Worse, his demeanor was increasingly unprofessional. He yawned repeatedly during appointments without so much as an apology, interrupted me constantly, and even dismissed my attempts to provide context with a wave of his hand. It was demeaning and disheartening.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness--by another physician. When I returned to Dr. Nichols for ongoing care, he offered no support or guidance. His attitude was disturbingly blasé, which is the last thing anyone wants from their primary care provider.
After decades as his patient, I've made the difficult decision to move on. I need a doctor who listens, remembers, and genuinely cares. read more
