I have been looking to get some casual sports coats made as I was not happy with off-the-rack ones that I'd purchased elsewhere. Based on the reviews at Nicholas Joseph I decided to give them a try and I was really happy with the outcomes. Katie was my consultant and was able to quickly assess my build and determine the right fit for me. I had a style in mind for my sports casual jacket and she was able to find several options that I liked. Katie gave a lot of advice on things I should consider - I'm glad that I relied on her. One of the ideas that I thought I would not like was getting an enscription sewn above my inner jacket pocket. At first I thought this was a little too over the top for me, but she suggested my daughters name. What a great idea - my daughter was so touched by that. Katie also suggested some matching pants that complemented the jackets. I'm very happy with the results - comfortable jackets, understated - but high quality. So I emailed to schedule an appointment with the in house tailor to have a bespoke (made in Chicago) suit as advertised. I was excited. After digging in a little though, there was some confusing back and forth as to whether the "in house tailor" was the person making it. After a few awkward questions it was revealed that the suit was cut and loosely sewn overseas, and then would be assembled somewhere "near their location." All of this for $3800...and definitely not bespoke. A bit overwhelmed, I opted for one of their made in Asia custom suits instead. After selecting my fabric, I am confused as to why the salesperson (not the "in-house tailor") is measuring me. I preferred to meet directly with the tailor and was told that's not how it works. During my three visits to the shop I never saw the tailor or anyone other than salespeople measuring clients. It dawned on me that had I gone the "bespoke" route that the salesperson would have handled that too... After all of this I picked out my "free custom shirt" which cost me $120 because apparently I didn't pick the cheapest fabric. All in, I paid $2000. The suit fitting was a disaster. After a couple of rounds of fittings, the suit fits worse than my first cheap suit from Macys purchased nearly 10 years ago. The sales people, while nice, offered little to no guidance. The final product looks inexpensive and doesn't fit. Look, I know it's a privilege to be able to buy a custom or bespoke suit and I don't take that for granted. I'm writing this because I saw two different men in there shopping for their wedding, and I don't want others to end up as disappointed as me on their wedding day. At best, this place felt like they used all of the little tricks to get you in and charge you twice for you were expecting...and the product was poor. I've experimented with multiple custom suits in Chicago and tried out Nicholas Joseph a few months ago because a colleague at work had a good experience and Nicholas Joseph's intro suit is about $200 cheaper than Daniel George, my normal provider. After mulling it over for a few months, I've concluded that I didn't find the cost difference worth it, and I will probably not return. I purchased a two piece suit at Nicholas Joseph. The sales rep was very friendly and responsive to my emails, but she just didn't have the same expertise as I'm accustomed to. I was repeatedly asked what I thought needed to be done with the suit rather than advised like I'm used to. For example, the rep asked me how many inches wide my lapel should be and how many inches the circumference of my pant leg should be; I found these questions bizarre because I have no expertise with these types of issues and expect my custom clothier to help me make these decisions. I thought the final suit was a little boxy and urged the rep to take in the shoulders which she did. I just never felt 100% about the fit, so I took it in to Daniel George to get his opinion. Sure enough, he found and corrected several fit issues with both the jacket and the pants. I still wear the suit; it's by no means shoddy or cheap, but it just didn't deliver what I've come to expect out of custom. Overall I wouldn't stray away again from my normal provider even for a couple hundred dollars worth of savings. I give Nicholas Joseph three stars for its friendly sales rep and a wearable suit, but the experience was underwhelming compared with what I'm used to. It was especially frustrating because I feel like I walked out with a less-than-perfect fitting product. read more

A custom suit was on the high end of our budget and we had to come in from out of town for our appointments, yet we came away exceptionally happy with both the final product and the process. I want to start off by saying how accommodating and professional Jodi was over at Nicholas Joseph. In early April I reached out to the team at Nicholas Joseph and inquired about a custom suit for my upcoming wedding the last week of May. Jodi, immediately responded to my inquiry positively that they "could of course help out". Keep in mind this was in the middle of the corona virus pandemic which is still sweeping the nation. After a few initial screening questions regarding my health and quarantine procedures we had both been following, Jodi agreed to meet with me to do a fitting as long as we took some extra precautions. Masks and gloves were worn at all times and every step was taken to ensure my safety as well as hers in these uncertain times. After two weeks of searching for a suit shop to make a suit to wear on my wedding day, I finally found the one shop that actually took the time to listen to my unique predicament I found myself in. Jodi made sure my first experience at Nicholas Joseph was an exceptional one. The level of detail in which she spoke about fabrics and options available that goes into designing a custom piece was impressive to say the least. The shop alone is beautifully designed and you can tell the same level of detail they provide for their suits went into perfecting their store. The shop exuded sophistication and class and the staff was every bit up to par. During this desperate time, Jodi helped me pick out and design my first custom suit which will be worn on my wedding day in Mackinaw Island, Michigan. I could not have asked for a more pleasant suit buying experience. Considering the situation, and everything Nicholas Joseph has done to accommodate such an expedited request shows you just how much they value their customers. I just went in today for my final fitting and I have never in my life worn a more better fitting suit than I have today. I was even able to speak to Nicholas himself, who took time out of his day to ask me about my wedding and my experience so far, he is a true gentleman. As soon as I walked in, I saw boxes on top of boxes of medical masks and gloves which they were preparing to donate to local hospitals and medical centers in this time of scarcity. They have an incredible show room that displays all of the detailed options for making your suit and shirts, amazing service, and a final product that will be precisely what you wanted. I have been a client of NJ's for about three years now and I have only had GREAT experiences. I've had approximately 6 suits made, they are all awesome. I ordered a suit last month for a work event the following month and it arrived on time and was a perfect fit. What was even better, I wore an OTR suit (BrooksBrothers) that had an acceptable fit the day prior to wearing the suit ordered from NJ's. Although i looked good in the BB suit, the suit that "felt" the best and got all of the compliments was the NJ suit. Katie always takes great care of me and her measurements are always on point.
