The person who took our order was helpful with her suggestions. But, looks can be deceiving because upon entering, I was welcomed with relaxing piano jazz music reminiscent of what Mr. Rogers would enjoy, a fish tank, and nice restaurant decor. For a Thai restaurant, it really embraces the theme and the staff are quite friendly. I ordered the lunch pork combo with a salad and green curry. The lovely looking salad was enhanced with peanut sauce adding a certain nutty flavor to the crispiness of the leaves and the taste of the sweetness of the carrots. Overall, a good appetizer! The Pad Thai noodles had this certain zest of sweetness and the noodles, themselves, have an easy to chew texture with the right amount of moist. Bits of fried egg and onion were dashed in to confidently help you enjoy this tasty dish. The Green Curry soup is creamy, due to the coconut milk, and spicy but not overbearing if you take your time slurping it. I had it on medium spice level which complements the shrimp well. But, I did add more coconut milk, later on, to reduce the spice. The eggplant gives the soup a certain balance of soft texture in contrast to the crispy red and green peppers and the green string beans. The pork was seasoned well and tender and was the delicious star in this bowl of flavorful green curry soup which was not bland at all Overall, the place goes beyond nice and is actually quite impressive with an elegant classy, and yet, down to earth atmosphere which makes the delicious food even better! I'll start with the service. The first server seemed to not either want to serve or was having a bad day. She was replaced by another server who was great. The first server got the dish wrong so the second server ordered the correct dish and even comp us for the first server mistake. The ambiance was good, it felt like a mom and pop kind of place. The food.. is my biggest complaint. The fried fish balls tasted like a mix of octopus and fish.. really tough to eat and bland. The fresh spring roll with shrimp has mint or something in it that throws the whole dish off, making it taste disgusting. The fried rice was good The garlic chicken was good The pad Thai with shrimp was horrible. I've had better as frozen meals.. this pad Thai cost so much and gave about 4 to 5 shrimp with nothing but noodles. No other veggies inside the dish just noodles and shrimp and the noodles were very gross. Had the crispy duck which was saved by some sauce on the side. The duck itself was tender but lacked any real flavor, tasted plain and crispy. The best dish so far was the mango sticky rice. Loved it!! The rest of the meal? I have no clue how this place has 5 stars. Most people are probably only familiar with American Thai, which is probably why? I don't know. The person I spoke with on the phone was friendly, so service gets a 5 (from a takeout standpoint). The food is quite standard. The crab rangoons were pretty good. The protein in both my husbands meal and my meal were absolutely horrible. Toughest tofu I've ever had. The Pad Thai had 3 pieces of chicken with a lot of noodles, I asked for medium spicy. It wasn't spicy at all, the chicken was just paid fried chicken with a side of sweet sauce. I was not impressed. I visit this area from time to time for work and have wanted to check this place out on one of my visits due to its high rating. My time was limited so I arrived right when they opened for lunch. Unfortunately, they were running late so they didn't open on time and I had to wait about 10 minutes past their published opening time. The server was pleasant and quickly took my order. The prices were reasonable for their lunch entrees and the restaurant was clean and decorated with traditional Thai decor. The food arrived and I was disappointed to say the least. The Pad Thai was way too sweet and there were only a few pieces of beef in my curry. I was only able to eat about half of the beef that was there as it was incredibly tough and full of grissle. Perhaps they were simply having an off day as so many other guests seem to speak highly of their experiences there. I've had much better food at other Thai places in the area, so I doubt I'll return here. read more

It has broken new ground by offering authentic Thai dishes I have never seen before in our area. They pride themselves on their authenticity. It is a true Mom and Pop restaurant, owned by a nice, sweet, and gracious Thai woman and her husband, who heads the kitchen under the name of Chef Rattpon. An impressive resume of the Chef is on display in the small lobby as you enter, citing 15 years of experience that includes working with a Michelin-starred chef from a 5 star rated hotel in Thailand. It is located in the Chesapeake Crossing Shopping Center on South Military Highway and very easy to find, neatly nestled between a Home Emporium on its left and an Octapharma Plasma center on its right. A Thai restaurant has occupied this spot for as long as I can remember. It was previously the site of the Chesapeake location of Sawasdee Thai Cuisine and was also once a Tida Thai. I also remember eating at a Thai restaurant in this spot more than 20 years ago. With each of my visits, a complimentary cup of soup has been served before my meal and a complimentary dessert after my meal, along with their friendly and impeccable service I have been ordering mostly from their menu page of Authentic Thai Dishes and have yet to try my usual standby Thai favorites, such as Thai Green Curry, Drunken Noodles, and Tom Kha Gai. I will get to those during some future visits. I ordered the following dishes at an Extra Thai Spicy level, and each one delivered the heat to my satisfaction. YEN TA FO (THAI PINK NOODLE SOUP): This is a popular street food dish in Thailand and consists of wide rice noodles in a pork broth accented by a fermented red soybean paste that gives the noodles their distinctively attractive pink tone. The soup arrived with its dry ingredients inside the bowl, and the broth was poured into the bowl separately after it was placed on my table. This was a serving twist I had never seen before. Its other ingredients included shrimp, shrimp balls, squid, fried pork, Asian greens, tofu puffs, and fried wontons. The ingredients delivered a powerful explosion of flavors as the noodles grew even pinker and prettier with each bite. This is my favorite dish here to date: My Rating: 5-Plus Stars. NAEM KHAO TOD (CRISPY RICE SALAD WITH FERMENTED PORK): This is a traditional salad dish from Laos and Northern Thailand, one that I last enjoyed at a Thai restaurant in Las Vegas many moons ago. Crispy balls of fried rice were crumbled and mixed in with fermented pork sausage, lettuce and other vegetables, red curry paste, cashews, and aromatic spices. The version served here was light, refreshing, and bursting with flavor and texture. My Rating: 5 Stars. KRA PRAO MOO SUB KAI DAO (Holy Basil Stir Fry with Ground Pork and Fried Egg over Rice). Served with Prik Nam Pla, a Thai condiment with fish sauce and chopped red chilies. The basil and spicy ground pork formed an intensely pleasurable taste experience and combined beautifully with the rice, fried egg, and Prik Nam Pla. My Rating: 5 Stars. HOT POT NOODLE TOM YUM SEAFOOD: Spicy Sour Noodle Soup with Fish Balls, Squid, Mussels, Scallops, Onions, Shredded Cabbage, Mushroom, Cilantro, and Onsen Egg. This one was ordered from the Chef's Special Menu and was served in a hot pot. I scooped out several servings from the hot pot into a smaller bowl, as pictured in my photo. The flavors from all the ingredients came through exquisitely. My Rating: 5 Stars. KHAO SOI CHICKEN: Braised Chicken with Red Curry Paste, Coconut Milk, Steamed Egg Noodles, Cilantro, Green Onion, Red Onion, and Cabbage, topped with Fried Egg Noodles. This is a coconut curry soup regarded by many as Northern Thailand's most famous dish. The chicken was tender and tasty, bathed in its rich coconut broth. The flavors from the egg noodles and other ingredients came through nicely as the fried noodles added a pleasant crunch. My Rating: 5 Stars. BOAT NOODLE SOUP WITH PORK: Served as a recent weekly special addition, this is a traditional Thai soup with house made pork balls, sliced pork, a pork blood base to its broth, and a variety of herbs and spices. Once again, the broth was poured over the dry ingredients in my bowl tableside. The ingredients combined together for a powerful combination of flavors. My Rating: 5 Stars. FRESH SPRING ROLLS: Ordered as an Appetizer from their regular menu, they came with a crunchy rice paper exterior filled with carrot, lettuce, and shrimp on request. These were at least as good as any I have enjoyed elsewhere. My Rating: 5 Stars. Their Thai Iced Tea is beautifully balanced, sweet, refreshing, and delicious. My Rating: 5 Stars. The second I walked in I was greeted with smiles, the owners came out to greet me and shared about the restaurant. I appreciate their enthusiasm about their food and restaurant as a whole. The Fresh Spring Rolls are filled with veggies and wrapped with love. Added shrimp and the shrimp were a nice size. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was also imitation crab meat inside. I'm a sucker for imitation crab. The Crab Delight is cream cheese, imitation crab meat, and green onion. This mixed is tucked into a wrapper and deep fried. Served with a sweet chili sauce. Three Flavor Fish is hands down my new favorite dish. It is whole flounder that is deep fried, covered in three sauces (sweet, spicy and sour), bell pepper, onions and basil. This dish comes with jasmine rice. It is so delicious. Cashew Stir Fry- mushrooms, onions, red bell peppers, celery, cashew and a cashew sauce. The choices for protein are chicken, beef, pork, veggies, tofu, shrimp or seafood. I had mine with shrimp. I'm most certainly going to be a regular at Nice Thai. Nice Thai Cuisine is one of the best Thai restaurants in the COVA area! This family-owned business has a passion for cooking and sharing its Thai culture. The chef has a reputable background working with Michelin Star chefs in Thailand and bringing his experience into his restaurant. It was impressive to read through his bio as we were waiting to be seated. Nice Thai was previously owned by different owners and the new owners have been managing this restaurant for about 3 months. One item that was shared was that the owners buy fresh ingredients each morning for the restaurant. The family is very friendly and provides top-notch service. From the outside this restaurant may not catch the eye however, the inside atmosphere provides a comforting/intimate setting that's perfect for any occasion. The menu offered at Nice Thai provides authentic dishes and street food that you typically cannot find at a Thai restaurant. Of course, you will see more common Americanized Thai dishes like Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Pad See Ew. But I was excited to find Pad Kra Prao and Yen Ta Fo on the menu. On the last page of the menu, there is a list of authentic dishes that I am excited to come back for more. Thai Iced Tea: Thai Tea was balanced and refreshing to drink. I was happy that this was made with real tea and not an artificial powder Fried Thai Chicken Wings: deep-fried chicken wings with a sweet chili sauce on the side. Chicken wings were breaded and juicy/moist. Yen Ta Fo: a street food stable known for the pink-stained noodles. The pork/bean curd broth was poured separately at our table and the bowl was filled with wide noodles, shrimp, squid, fish cake, and tofu. The sweet and spicy broth has so much flavor that this is a must-try dish. Kra Prao Moo Sub Kai Dao: this dish is a stir fry of minced pork with Thai basil and egg over rice. I was enticed by the multiple flavor profiles and the spicy Thai pepper fish sauce on the side leveled up the seasoning. Som Tum Pu Plara: a simple dish with huge flavors. It was a traditional papaya salad and had fermented crab in here. I love Korean fermented crabs so finding this inside the papaya salad was exciting. The description on the menu says fermented fish but I didn't find any fish in there so I really think they meant fermented crab. The last thing to note is that you can choose your spice level. I chose mild and this still had a little kick so I can't imagine if someone orders medium spice. At the end of your meal, the owners provide a sweet dessert at the end for what they have that week. This time it was mini chocolates but they told me this will vary depending on the week. This place is a gem and I will be back to try more authentic dishes!! read more

The food here is very authentic and taste delicious. Coming from San Diego which has lots of great Thai spots, this restaurant definitely beats them in value and flavor. The Tom Yum noodle soup was well balanced with its flavors, not too sour and not too salty, just right. The Thai iced tea was extremely unique and as its sweetened thai tea with lemon. Kind of like a Thai arnold palmer. The Coconut Ice cream was delicious as well, it reminded me the way the prepare ice cream in South East Asia, the peanuts and whipped cream enhance the creaminess and flavor of the ice cream. When it comes to the the restaurant it is very spacious and surprisingly not that busy on weekdays. I definitely recommend this spot as this is the best I've had so far. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to try authentic Thai cuisine in the area. My mom got the Drunken Noodles while I tried the Yen Ta Fo Noodle. As a person who is Thai myself, the place is very nicely decorated and really feels like you're in one of the shops in Bangkok :) I was greeted right away by my server, Biyu, who was very kind! I was the only person dining in at the moment, so my food came out very fast. I had gotten the chicken salad with level 2 spice as part of the APIHM yelp deal and another order or potstickers. The salad was delicious, the chicken was crispy, the veggies were fresh, and they all worked well together with a great sauce full of umami! The potstickers were pretty good, I liked their crispiness and how you can taste the ginger they put in there. The sauce that came with the potstickers though was so unique, I've never tasted something like that before! I wish I remembered to ask what ingredients they used for it. How this place got 5 stars is beyond me lol I got yum soon sen and lard na with tofu for lunch and they were equally bad. The gravy for lard na is usually more thick but theirs was very watery, it was like I was eating soup. The amount of noodles the gave was also tiny compared to the amount of soup sauce they gave. Yum Woon Sen is usually coated with good amount of lime juice dressing but their was super dry so it has NO flavor. It made me wonder if someone forgot to put the dressing on it. While quickly searching thru Yelp for a quick bite - found this gem on a whim. The restaurant has a cool fish tank, and a fun vibe when you enter. The staff is very friendly, they checked up on us periodically, and made sure we were enjoying our meal. The pad se ew honestly was the highlight for me, the noodles had a soft chewy texture, and didn't stick together. The green curry was very flavorful, and rich. We also ordered a traditional papaya salad, which was something new for me (had pieces of crab in its shell, which gave it extra saltiness), and we also had the shrimp spring roll with a peanut sauce - which was quite big compared to some of the ones I've tried at other restaurants.
