Most people visit The Cheese Iron for their sandwiches (understandably so; we've had them, and they…read moreare delicious!), but for me, the beauty of this place is in its cheese and deli meats. We make a lot of fresh pasta at home, and they always have the freshest ingredients to take our recipe to the next level. For example, many Italian recipes call for guanciale (Italian cured pork), and we could never find it locally until we visited The Cheese Iron. We had to settle for pancetta until we found this gem of a spot. Their focaccia and baguettes are delicious, and their cheeses are always fresh. They also are the only place we've seen locally that carries Lioni Latticini burrata, which is, without a doubt, the best burrata we've ever tried. We stopped buying commercial burrata altogether after trying that brand. Plus, their customer service is unmatched -- everyone is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Those little (and big!) elements continue to bring us back to The Cheese Iron. I'm so, so happy The Cheese Iron exists in Scarborough.

Here, you'll find plenty of farm fresh cheeses and tasty flavored milks to sample and purchase. When we visited, they were doing a cheese demonstration (and of course, some sampling of said cheese too!) and they happily fed us and answered our questions as we were all huddled around. But they're not... they're butter flavors. And that's what sets Casco Bay Butter apart from EVERY OTHER BUTTER COMPANY IN THE WORLD. They don't just make butter... they make butter with pizazz. They've entirely reinvented the wheel here with options that are mindboggling... and mindbogglingly good. I've had samples of their product before at fairs, but had the chance to check out an Open House they recently hosted. I ate: blue cheese butter and walnut short bread cookies, peach habanero butter peach cobbler, cilantro lime butter cornbread, and truffle butter on crackers like it was some kind of spread. I may have brought myself one step closer to a heart attack, but "non, je ne regrette rien." (And when I got home, I had salt potatoes alternatively submerged in lemon chive butter and garlic-herb butter.) Casco Bay Butter isn't cheap, but this is one of those cases where you really do "get what you pay for." I believe it's $6 per 5.5 ounce tub. It's made from entirely from all natural and organic dairy made here in Maine/NNE; and the owners are some of the most genuine and kind people I've met. Buy local, folks. (And don't tell your doctor you're eating butter with a spoon.)

This was like being in a bigger city! The cheese bar was open, and we were served a few delicious cheeses with full explanations. We of course ended up buying cheese to go with the wine we were not planning on purchasing. Then I found the wine, wow, what a selection. These are not the supermarket wines, these are excellent selections made by people that know what they are buying. Something unique, delicious, and bold. I loved it. It was pricey, but the service was excellent (until we went to the fish counter - maybe a bad day?). But everyone else in the store was very helpful, kind, and were smiling. The prices were a bit high, but the location is pretty, well organized, clean, and again - very helpful staff.

We pet babies, we loved seeing the different birds. There were peacocks! It was fun, relaxing, cool in the shade. The food part is big enough to eat and relax. Ice cream was delicious. I would go back! People that worked there were really nice too.
