What a great place! We stopped here to see what it was all about. We had ice cream, we saw cows, and we paid to go into the area where there was lots of animals. We even fed goats and deer. We pet babies, we loved seeing the different birds. There were peacocks! It was fun, relaxing, cool in the shade. The food part is big enough to eat and relax. Ice cream was delicious. You scream. I scream. We all scream... for site made ice cream on a working Maine dairy farm ! This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... How have I never been here? Working farm - a lot of different animals for the kids to see. Cows, alpaca, sheep and more. Goat yoga, milking days and pumpkins for sale. We came for the ice cream... We weren't disappointed. Well, I was a tiny bit just because the ginger ice cream I wanted to try was sold out, but that's okay. The ladybug (strawberry with chocolate chips) and butter pecan were both delicious. It was a nice day to walk around and enjoy the farm while finishing our treat. read more

So, as the wife and I were looking for some delicious frozen treats on a hot summer day, this location rolled up in my social media feeds and we decided to check it out .... we were not disappointed. The ice cream was so creamy as my wife got scoops of regular style ice cream in a cup and I got the black raspberry soft serve and it completely delivered. Sometimes I have been to places that serve soft serve and if you get flavored item other than vanilla or chocolate, you often taste a chemical to them. Not here. Everything was fresh and clean and it had many things to to with the family there with playgrounds and farm attractions. My mom found Smiling Hill Farm when she was looking for lumber for some shelves. It soon became her favorite Go-to place to take company to. Their sandwiches are yummy and reasonably priced, their homemade ice cream delicious!! This week, we did the animal trail. The kids had a blast, and fell in love with the baby goats. (Goat yoga is now on our list) You can buy a (small) handful of grain to feed the animals with a token in those little dial-a-bubble-gum-type-contraptions, and tokens cost .50. This is my only complaint. Another farm similar to this near my grandkids sells a small bag of grain for $5. Still a money maker, but more satisfying from a parent's perspective. read more

An absolute beautiful place to visit with the family and so proud to support local farms . The farm is beautiful with its animal well cared for. There are picnic tables where you can buy food at the cafe and sit snd look at your views: the dairy cows! What can be better than that. Plus 40 flavors of ice cream ? Yes please :) actually I didn't get a chance to eat their ice cream but did purchase their coffee milk jar. Delicious! The cheese curds varieties delicious! I even bought 1/2 dozen duck Eggs. I can't give this place high enough praise! Their staff is very nice and the ice cream Barn is adorable. The on-site petting zoo looks fantastic for kids, and it's so nice to actually see cows on the pasture. But the biggest winner of all are their products. The blueberry milk is incredible. It tastes of real wild blueberries, and is delicious. I'm addition, the ice cream they serve on-site is wonderful. So creamy and excellent flavors. Overall, the whole experience is fantastic. My Maine trip will never be complete if I can't have my favorite flavored Milk from Smiling Hill Farm. I love their Blueberry Milk as well as other flavors like Coffee, Strawberry and Chocolate. We stopped by here for lunch. We ordered egg salad sandwich and a bowl of Mac & Cheese, a quart of blueberry milk and ice cream for dessert. We were satisfied and happy with everything. We tried the fall favorite ice cream flavors (Jack-O-Lantern and Apple Pie with caramel). It was delicious. The ice cream was very creamy and not too sweet. We get to eat outside and enjoy the view of the farm along with the fresh breeze. The Staff were so friendly and pleasant. They have a barnyard that kids would love. There is an entrance fee of $5. We found out that you can also sign up for Goat yoga. Everyone can check out the barn where you can find baby cows and mommy cows. Just be quiet though because the baby cows are sleeping. The animals are as welcoming as the humans! We had a terrific sunny morning snuggling baby goats, oohhing and aahh-ing over baby goats born last night, wandering happily from one to another group. It was my granddaughter's suggestion we visit. She's been to camp there and introduced us to her friends. The animals are cared for with gentle loving hands. Lunch in the sun was the perfect ending. Although I mainly come here for treats, they offer sooooo much more! Ice cream!! ALL the flavors... Some unique flavors too! If you can't find what you want from the scooping case, check out the container freezer! An example over two trips I was disappointed to find they did not have coffee oreo. Well, I was wrong! They did have it - it was in the container freezer. Oh well, lesson learned. My mistake did "force" me to try different flavors. Mint Oreo, Peppermint. Both yummy! While I typically opt for a sugar cone, they have plain cones, and dishes available as well. If you want more than scoops ask for a sundae! Be warned, they are very generous with the scoops. Although for me, it was a pleasant surprise when I saw the portion :) If you are in the mood for something other than ice cream, they have a lot of different options - just look on the menu board on the opposite wall of the ice cream board. They make lunch! (I haven't tried it) In the refrigerators, they have their famous and delicious milk! All sorts of varieties. If you finish drinking the milk while on site, return the bottle at the register for your bottle return refund. ALSO in the refrigerators - Fresh local eggs, locally made goat fudge and locally baked treats from Two Fat Cats!!! WOW! One stop shopping for treats. YES! If you want a savory snack...they have chips and delicious Popcorn. The popcorn is made locally in Boothbay. My favorite flavor - Parmesan Garlic. Oh so good. They also have farm themed toys for sale - farm themed reusable bags, t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale. Don't worry, they do accept credit cards. The views from the patio are very nice overlooking the fields and the pond. They have several face-hole pictures spots that are cute and fun. For a little extra $ they have a barnyard as well where you can visit with the animals (although it closes for the season on 11/6/2016). In the winter time, they offer cross country skiing. I am sure that I missed something, but if you check out their FB page - you can see all of the fun with daily updates. There is so much to love about this farm. A real life farm. This seems like a more fun and active place to come to during the Spring and Summer months, but it is still worthy of a visit in the winter as we came to find. Delicious, delicious milk in glass jars. But there is the bonus of great chocolate, strawberry, and other varietals of milk, with special notice to banana. And as good as the milk is, the smell from the tiny kitchen came aromatic smells of homemade soups and sandwiches. Can't wait to go back. Homemade ice cream was heavenly as well. read more

We came today for a delicious bowl of ice cream with a cone on top, of course. Mint chocolate chip and cookie dough, yum yum!! Such a great farm. I did goat snuggling and that was way too much fun. I didnt want to leave! Also walked around the barn yard and it's much bigger then expected and well worth the $6.50. I've been a fan of Smiling Hill Farm milk for years, and appreciate them now more than ever! During this time of social distancing for safety they are offering curbside pickup. I called the store, told them what I wanted, gave them my credit card and drove over to the farm where the store manager brought it to my car (outside at a safe distance, of course!) I've been coming here since I was a kid! My mom says it used to be free, but nowadays it will run you $6.50 (under 1 is free).It's a great spot to bring your kids to see some animals and play on some structures. Although most animals are behind gates, you can still feed a bunch of them (deer, horses, donkey, pigs via a tube). There are two goat petting areas that are our favorite places to spend time. BEWARE-if they hear you getting the food out of the machine, they will come for you as soon as you enter. My two (almost 3) year old enjoyed the interaction, but this could be scary for other littles. Throughout the farm there are structures (wooden train and truck, old excavator, metal dragon) to play on/in. Just outside the gates is a small playground and some "face in the hole" photo ops. My kids enjoy these extras almost as much as the animals. After you've scrubbed your hands, you've gotta stop in for fresh ice cream! They have many different flavors. You can't go wrong. read more
