Well, I have been wanting to come here all summer. Finally, I had the chance to come for a visit ... and WAS disappointed. I saw the gluten free list of flavors. The list was fine, and I decided on a medium (two scoops). I wanted one scoop for my dog. I asked for orange- pineapple and a scoop of vanilla on the top (she's picky and won't eat "odd" flavors). It came the opposite, with the orange-pineapple on top. I asked for another dish, since there were no gluten free cone options. I scooped the orange into the other bowl and found there was MUCH MORE vanilla (for my tiny 13# dog!) ... and not much of the orange-pineapple for me. The gal was sweet and apologized. When I asked for more of the orange- pineapple, she complied. This was GOOD customer service. * HOWEVER, the orange-pineapple was very soft, and runny like a soft- serve (yuck!) The flavor was good and reminiscent of Bayers Baby Aspirin....yum! * There are no gluten free cones. Very disappointing. * The area is lovely and perfect for sitting and eating a cone...but holy mosquito! Dusk is feeding time! * The gal at the window was a bit, idk, snarky to the other two teens working. "We've got to find another way to do this!" The guy was saying to her, "well, idk, it's really not hard. It doesn't matter." Apparently, things weren't happening the way she felt they should. She was a bit, idk, bossy and I couldn't understand why it was necessary. Maybe she was bothered by my less than immediate order, due to allergies...and asking questions. i wont go back, i'm a 72 year old loyal Camp Ellis (very) small business owner and resident that have supported Garsides since Gordon and Mary own it. Today after my 13 mile bike ride i stopped for a bit of ice cream to find i only had $4.00 in my bike bag. the smalls are $5.50. Garside's Ice Cream is one of those places you have to visit in Southern Maine while enjoying the nice summer weather. Garside's Ice Cream stand (seasonal) is located off the beaten path and has been serving great homemade ice cream for over 50 years bringing in the crowds of loyal customers. This is my favorite stop for ice cream after spending time at OOB, heading back to Route 1. Garside's usually have about 35 or more flavors of ice cream on hand and are always coming up with new flavors each season based on customer input. My favorite flavors are Ginger, Mocha Chip, Swiss Chocolate Almond, Pistachio, and Almond Joy (they ran out last visit). They also make sundaes. banana splits, frappes, floats, ice cream sodas, and freezes. The ice cream is made with very high quality ingredients and has a very creamy and soft texture and the flavors are good and not too heavy. During hot weather, enjoy it fast because the ice cream begins to melt and drip quickly. The price for ice cream starts out at around $3 for a small one scoop cone/dish. Pints, quarts, and half gallons of hand packed ice cream is available. Drive into numbered parking spot. Call on cell phone the number posted everywhere. Place your order. Great coaching from person answering. A few minutes later a person comes to car with tray on which is your order, napkins, eating utensils. Serving person is wearing mask and gloves. Can eat your order in car or on wood benches in front of car, all properly social distances. You must order using cell phone, no service at window. Flavor list on front of building, better yet have menu posted on website. And the phone order taker makes it more fun. Try it, you'll have a story to tell. On your bike, pretend your driving car, pick one of numbered spaces. Place order using cell. Have ordered items brought to you. FAST. Be interesting with hot July evening. I heard they were good. Drive by everyday on my way to work. And they are only a quarter mile from where I'm living. Had all the attributes to make this spot a family local hang for us. We went, we ordered, we ate, and it rocked! The flavor names are kind of fun, but also kind of confusing. Don't be afraid to ask questions. They fun part was the person that was assisting in there got a little confused when I ordered a banana split. Better for us, we got to customize it. Generally we love to go to Garside's. The ice cream is usually pretty good. This year, though, we haven't been blown away. Service has been . . . well, it's typical teenager service. They're all probably really nice, but working in an ice cream stand is probably kind of dull, and you can tell they're kind of bored. Also, they say they're open until 10 but were closing up early at about 9 the other night. We didn't realize they were trying to close until after we put in our orders. Naturally we felt kind of bad - but at the same time, it was an hour earlier than their advertised hours. When I asked for an ice cream soda, the girl working the window seemed hassled because she wasn't sure if they had enough soda for it. They did - I guess? - but the soda was flat and flavorless. Not so yummy. And then another time we both ordered M&M ice cream, which was actually peanut butter M&Ms, which the kid asked if was okay - but... it was... disappointing. Parking can get a little crazy during busy times since the parking lot is unmarked and people will park wherever they want. When the girl brought my ice cream to me it was cream color and had no almonds in it I told her that's not what I ordered it was not chocolate she told me if I wanted something else I could so I asked for heavenly hash . We come to Saco once a year from Texas where we know great ice cream. This place is super authentic and charming, nothing fussy or pretentious. Best chocolate milkshake i ever had. My brother and his wife both had chocolate almond ice cream cones. They said they have never had as many almonds as they had in Garcides ice cream. My husband had one of the special flavors, white chocolate macadamia. He said it was very tasty. We happened upon this spot while driving to another destination in Kennebunkport. So glad we stopped there. I highly recommend trying their ice cream and milkshakes. read more
