IF you are out looking for an ice cream treat for yourself that feels small town yet has charm being on the main street in Saco. It feels much different than a typical ice cream stand. The staff was super friendly and the little side window to order takeout is a nice touch as you are walking through downtown Saco. The only drawback with this one is the selection of ice cream wasn't that extensive and wide ranging but what we did have was tasty and we enjoyed it as we were looking for a different ice cream shoppe! We will be back as this is also dog friendly and walk-ins are welcome with a small amount of seating in the shop and outside of the shop. read more

I don't go any more due to the fact that the price has more than doubled for ice cream. I suppose if you are by your self and want a treat maybe. But most of the time people are coming with kids, it's just so unaffordable it's crazy. The shop it self is cute but I'm just over it. So I just decided not to go there anymore. If my kids want ice cream Fielders Choice is a much more affordable option. The servings are HUGE. My kids love it there. read more

I excitedly go there every year on vacation. It was my favorite ice cream. Flavors are still good but for tiny amount they now give, for the price, no longer my favorite. They cut back a good 50%. And, several flavors were not in stock. Don't bother with the website, they barely have anything on it. Disappointed but will give it another chance. read more

We were driving back to our Air BnB after dropping my daughter off at UNE, and happened upon this later in the evening. Live music drew us in! Such a sweet little place! YUM! This place is FABULOUS! I was driving South from Machias ME & wanted a break & was craving ice cream. I Googled a few places & this look perfect. SO GLAD I STOPPED IN! It's an adorable little old fashioned ice cream & candy shop on the Main Street. Easy street parking! I ordered a small scoop of Butter Crunch & Coconut Almond Crunch. They were making homemade waffle cones & so I had the scoops on the waffle cone. The cone was DIVINE. Both ice creams were delicious too! Both super creamy & had tons of flavor! I'm a fan..because of a few things. 1. The Saco Scoop is located on the main strip of Saco 2. The Saco Scoop has a great selection of flavors...yum..ginger 3. The Saco Scoop has alliteration in their name 4. The Saco Scoop has great seating indoors and outdoors 5. The Saco Scoop is located right next to the little Post Office Park 6. The Saco Scoop has a dog door #6 is the best. I really appreciate when people are considerate towards those who have dogs. People will let wailing children into their stores but not well-behaved dogs -- this is a fallacy of modern American life that I don't contend well with. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because I have an exceptionally high bar for ice cream standards and it's not my ||favorite||, but it's very good for the value and location and absolutely worth the stop. read more

My husband, son, two dogs, and myself went here tonight for ice cream. It's a cute little place located on Main Street right next to the post office. The best part is they actually have a doggy walk up window! (This was the main reason we went lol) That alone gets 5 stars in my book! For a $1 you can order a doggy treat which is a huge portion of vanilla ice cream and a dog bone on top. My two pups split one and they both were in doggy heaven! They have some regular flavors and then some very creative flavors. I believe they make their own ice cream. The girl at the window was so friendly, patient, and even offered an extra cup for my pups since they were sharing. The serving size are decent and the quality of ice cream is good. There is plenty of out door seating too (even a water dish for your four legged friend) We never made it inside but will be back to see the inside too. read more

Super nice people and great portions on ice cream! We got the Sea Salt Caramel and were between the Butter Crunch and Cake Batter. The cashier recommended Butter Crunch and it didn't disappoint. Lots of variety in flavors. Some of them are sponsored and named after local companies, which I thought was kind of funny. It's a cute, kid-friendly place, and they sell some interesting souvenirs and games. read more

Came by here while visiting from nyc. Real cute place with a decent amount of flavors and super friendly employees. A group of us visited because of the great reviews we saw online. From the moment we stepped in the door, we were provided with high-quality service. We had a large party and were given excellent service with smiles from the workers. We were able to try as many flavors as we wanted. And the flavors -- there were so many, from basic to unique! Most of the flavors had a good amount of toppings mixed in. The java crunch and grahamtastic were favored by the group. There was also a coffee toffee crunch yogurt flavor, which was a very creamy yogurt option. The portions were very generous for the price. The inside decor was very cute and had plenty of seating. I'm going with 5 stars because I don't know how the Saco Scoop could be better. They seem to get their ice cream from Shain's, and it's hard to go wrong with that, many local ice cream places do that and it makes sense. (A little further south, these shops might get their ice cream from Richardson's. That's how the business mostly works.) But back to The Saco Scoop. They've hired friendly people who actually know how to talk with customers, make change, not play with their phone, etc. and it's really nice. In a way, this seems like an easy way to run a successful business but hiring good people is tough and they got it right. And then they took it to the next level by having a doggie window so you can walk up with your pooch and get ice cream for both of you. This is a big deal, it sets them apart and it makes me want to grab one of my neighbor's dogs (with permission, obv) and go for a treat. So if you're walking in Saco on a warm sunny day, this is a really good place to stop. Especially if you're walking the dog. read more

There could be such potential for this aesthetically adorable ice cream shop. Unfortunately the 4 times I've been there, I've said "I'm going to give it one more try...!" And each time they let me down. The consistent complaint? Extremely unfriendly employees. No one smiles, says hello, or attempts any type of niceties. Not while entering, ordering, or leaving. We went with visiting family last night (8/3), and the young cashier lady mumbled, didn't smile, and barely made eye contact. The other girl who was making the cones and sundaes worked slower than molasses; she was looking around, sighing heavily, and reading the orders as if she couldn't understand how to decipher what was written. We were a group of 8, and just as we got there, another large group entered behind us. The line was almost to the door. They continued to work super slowly, and continued to glare in exasperation or annoyance. Really?! Is it so bad to scoop ice cream? As we were leaving, an older gentleman who had just gotten his maple walnut cone was about to walk out the door and simultaneously take a taste. As he did so, the entire ice cream dumped on the floor. A well made cone does not just fall off at first lick, they had barely packed it in. He tried to pick it up, it slipped away, he got sad and threw it away. He looked at the line, and said "well. It's alright. I guess I didn't need a cone anyway", as neither girl came over to help or offer to replace his cone. If you do manage to get your ice cream, congrats! While the service stinks, the ice cream itself is very delicious. read more

Went here the other day because our regular favorite ice cream place was closed. I'd give this a 3.5 stars. The staff was great, plenty of flavors to choose from, and cute outdoor space. The ice cream was decent, but was definitely more sugary/artificial tasting than we are used to at our favorite place. Lastly, I was a bit surprised at the price of small ice creams. We recently visited The Saco Scoop on a weekend visit with our son from New York. We have been visiting Maine for over 25 years and are used to the local ice cream shops that serve excellent homemade ice cream. The Saco Scoop is as good as any we have visited over the years. The staff were extremely friendly and the portions were generous. Everyone in our group ordered a medium portion that contained multiple flavors and the only conversation on the way home was about how good each flavor was. I have to follow a gluten free diet and there were several options available and well marked on the menu eliminating the annoying round of questions. Don't forget to grab a bag of their salt water taffy which was also fresh, delicious and surprisingly reasonable. We are DEFINITELY going back on our next visit. read more

Being here makes me feel like I walked back into a simpler time, it's nostalgic and you can't help but feel happy. I felt a genuine sense of community while sitting eating complimentary popcorn and listening to story time with my toddler. The ice cream is not homemade but I do want to go back and try the homemade marshmallows and overall I'm just really glad this place is here. read more

If Norman Rockwell were coming through New England and happened to pull over in Biddeford, he would find a sweet treat at Dairy Joy. The charm really is there, complete with high schoolers dishing out sweet dairy based treats and if you squint, you can almost hear the big bopper and see the poodle skirt clad coeds. What's tragic is that the ice cream itself falls short of the New England dominance of American ice cream styles. Trying four flavors, I found the base creams to be light and airy (overrun?) as opposed to the heavy chew for hard pack ice cream that is reflective of the region. Also the ice cream itself was being served too warm only making the unfortunately light base more exasperated and it turning melty, quickly on a rather mild summer evening. Lastly -- none of the flavors that had mix-ins (ex: Oreo chunks from mint Oreo, or brownie chunks from espresso brownie) had a good amount of mix-ins. If it was just my flavor, I'd chalk it up to a fluke but we all had the same experience. We all find ourselves looking for the second half of the flavors we expected. What was good was the flavor of the base creams. For example the coffee base was pretty stand out good. While the smiles from the cheerful teenagers at the window were nice, they can't make up for the product itself. On our visit, there was a single solitary fellow manning the store with its wall of 10 frozen yogurt flavors, wall of dry toppings, counter length of additional dry toppings, a small cluster of fruit options directly across from the wall o' froyo, and, last but not least, four squeeze bottles! Can you tell I liked the squeeze options? Too bad the caramel solidified on contact with the chilly yogurt. Also too bad they don't have my favorite all-time topping - mochi. Sampling is not encouraged due to some folks taking advantage last season, but if you ask, they'll probably let you. Tart? No. Sweet? Yes. I liked all the flavors I tasted, but the fudge brownie was too liquidy - forgot to tell him so he could fix it, oops! If I remember correctly, the per ounce price here is 49 cents, but my nice little cupful cost me $3.78 due to the addition of tax. I also remember seeing some sign mentioning low-fat, but I don't know if it was for all their flavors or just certain ones. No tables or chairs inside, but they do have a few benches just across from its doors where we relaxed for a bit with our cool treats.

The self service format caught me off guard but I did like the interesting, albeit limited options. That aside, the service here was excellent. I got to the register and the cashier informed me that it was cash only. I only had my credit cards on me but she let me have the yogurt anyway. I will be putting a check in the mail this week for the amount but I found the gesture to be a pleasant surprise.

Our server was very friendly and was happy to answer any questions we had as well as let us sample flavors. I got a small cup with a scoop of Maine Whoopie Pie and a scoop of Speculoos & Chocolate. The pretzel one had a caramel taste which I liked, and the whoopie pie was a vanilla base with chocolate cake--both were super tasty and creamy. I do wish it was a little bigger for the price but it was so good nonetheless. They have seating outdoors and it was a cool day out so we enjoyed our treats outside right by the boats. They also have a dessert bar next door serving desserts with alcohol, she said it'll be opening in a few weeks. Cool idea!

The place had a lot of different options for ice cream given that it was a food truck, which was super Duper cool. I ended up getting the maple creamy with the apple crisp on the bottom. All of it was so good and so fresh it was honestly one of the best maple cream I've had or any ice cream appeared north for that fact. I got to meet the owner of the food. Truck was superduper cute and I really loved her concept of her business and she provided a great service.

You should note that they serve Gifford's ice cream, which is local to Maine. The staff was friendly and the service was very quick. Sat at a picnic table next to the ice cream trailer and enjoyed my sundae while watching cars pull in across the street for a car show. Would certainly go back to this place.
