I like the selection and the prices but the staff is soooooo unpersonable. We have been in several times and never get anything but a stright faced cashier who rings us up with as little effort and talking as possible. The story is this: My partner and I were walking around the Green Festival this weekend, and we approached a friendly looking pet store booth. Upon realizing that it was, indeed, Next to Nature's booth, I said to her, "Um, no." To my surprise, Cliff (who I later found out is the owner) recognized me from my earlier post and motioned for me to come closer. We chatted for a minute about "The Incident" and he convinced me that their staffing problem had been resolved. He asked for another chance (with a really nice coupon in his hand), and since I was laid off almost 6 months ago and have a really large dog with food allergies that is increasingly expensive to feed, I couldn't say no. (Seriously, she's 140 pounds and eats like a medium sized horse!) I was pleasantly surprised to find that as soon as I entered the store I was greeted by 2 very smiley employees. (The other employee, the manager, ignored me as he was the first to call me a liar in the original Incident; I hope that the lack of eye contact was based in shame...but I've chosen to ignore the lack of apology for now...though it is why I'm not giving 4 stars.) I then decided to "test" the customer service (to see if they really had improved) by asking the really nice lady to help me pick a new food for my picky eater. She was super helpful, and helped me pick out 2 different kinds (which my Giant Malamute has enjoyed very much so far). We chatted a bit at the counter about my run-in with Cliff at the Green Fest, and she rang me up without incident. So, without further ado, I upgrade my stars. Keep up the good NtN, and I'll continue to drive 18 miles round trip (I've moved since the last post), past many similar stores with higher prices, to save some money feeding my horse. read more

Fair selection of organic and natural oriented food and supplies. A little more emphasis on dogs than cats, it looked like. The staff did ask if they could help but got a little high handed about what I considered proper nutrition for the tiny beast sitting hopefully by the refrigerator door. They also didn't have the freeze dried meat only treats nor Bene Bac nor the raw food I was looking for so I'd say this is probably a good pick for the customer that happens to find what they need here... which unfortunately, doesn't happen to describe me. read more

This used to be my neighborhood pet store, but I have moved on to the one of the more friendly natural pet supply stores found in West Seattle. While this store is still closest to my house, I'm willing to walk the extra mile (litterally) to visit Pet Elements or even Mud Bay. The staff at Next to Nature can be rude at times, and if you do drive, good luck finding parking! I can still find all the food, including raw and organic options, that I used to buy from Next to Nature at the other stores in West Seattle. read more

Just moved to the Junction and this is such a cute store that has all the essentials. It doesnt carry the brand Orijen, I was told it was because of the distribution or something - but it has all the other basics. God how I love organic pet stores. My little 'born to be a carnivore' Zzyxx was getting feisty the other night, undoubtably from a lack of organic tofu with beech tree leaves. These folks had some on the shelf and I was lucky enough to find a broomstick and some leftover Versed so old Ziz man was out cold and full o'organic quicker than you can say spelt bread with soy butter! Jesus he woke up and took a 67gram dump in the litter box(did spectral analysis to make sure his supplements were in order and that he was not cheating and eating at Jak's steak house). As anyone sane can tell you, carnivores can be corrected and molded into a post-biotic feministic model, as noted by Michel Foucault in his many tomes on the morality of cat feeding. I'm a puppy noob, and Next to Nature (and my vet, of course) has helped me so much when it comes to deciding on what to feed my pup. We now feed her Orijen, and NTN gives you a discount after you buy a certain number of bags. Their selection of treats is so enormous it can be a little overwhelming at times, but each time I go the staff helps me to narrow down what I want and gives great recommendations. Besides food, they sell crates, beds, collars, accessories, basically anything to satisfy your pet's needs. My puppy loves walking through the store and picking out what she wants, taking a lap around the back to check out the kitties up for adoption, and then getting a treat at the counter. Honestly, it's hard to get her to leave! I won't be going back to PETCO after discovering this store. read more

Not only do they sell very good dog food, but they genuinely care about your dogs. We received an odd batch of raw coated kibble that turned out to be moldy, and this was the first time we'd ever shopped here (we usually go to Mud Bay since it's closer to our apt). Our dogs had been refusing to eat it and my puppy was puking (I thought maybe we needed to increase the frequency of her meals since my larger dog wasn't showing any signs of an upset tummy, but both of them were being so dang picky!), until we finally noticed the white discoloration was moldy fuzz! To be clear, I definitely attribute this to issues with manufacturing, no fault of the store, as the gentleman who seemed to be the owner said these things occur when moisture is packed into the product in the factory--it has nothing to do with an improperly sealed bag (air would not cause this) or expired product. Their pet food is also replenished weekly so there's no chance this bag was expired. Despite not having a receipt and only having a bank statement to show, they replaced our food with a new bag of fresh food of the same brand (so far, this brand is the only dog food our dogs have willingly consumed without toppers). They even seemed willing to offer something different, as they asked us if we would be comfortable getting the same bag of food again. We checked the new bag before leaving and it was much different than the bag we had originally received--no discoloration and a much brighter brown color. They also seemed genuinely concerned for our dogs' health, as they asked us to keep the receipt of the new bag of food and watch for any concerns, even though it looked much better upon opening than the previous bad food bag did. We were originally so upset when we found the mold and were ready to fight for a refund, but they surprised us by being so helpful and reassuring that we'll definitely only get our dog food here from here on out. It is very clear that these people are in the business of providing good products for your dog, and that that's their priority. I couldn't help but write this review because I was really stressed upon finding that our food was bad, considering it's like an $80 bag of food, but they made the process so stress-free and I'm very appreciative of their genuine concern for our dogs. read more

The staff here knows their stuff, and it is obvious your animal comes first to them. I felt like both myself and Rufus were treated with respect and excellent customer service - the employee asked multiple questions about Rufus to help find the best food. They asked permission before providing a treat - I think that is terrific. And, Rufus loved the treats so much we bought two bags, plus the recommended food (which Rufus LOVES!) I was informed about a buyer reward card, I was provided information that was incredibly useful, I learned about Rufus' nutritional needs and have certainly found my new animal product store! I left there feeling good about my experience and am excited to go back again to really take some time and look around. I feel like Rufus and I made new friends. read more

Next to Nature is a great store, with knowledgeable people. They carry all the best foods, and a selection of raw foods. The store has a real hip atmosphere, and some BIG cats who live there. Next to Nature has answered several questions for me regarding homeopathic remedies for hotspots, dental care and others for my 4lb Chihuahua. Recently. They have helped me figure out how to feed and take care of an alley cat that recently adopted me. I know I can always count on them for any question I have. I work in West Seattle and so I'm really glad that Next to Nature has a Seattle store right by the Junction. It's really convenient for me to stop in. I have three cats and I like to feed them premier foods, and it can be really difficult to find more than one or two brands of really good stuff at chain pet stores. Even though this is a pretty small store, there is a huge amount of selection. I do wish they had more options for dry cat food, but I really like the brands they DO have, and my really picky cat agrees. The staff is always extremely knowledgeable, and has always been very friendly. I've never had any major problem with my cats that I've asked for their help with, but I've enjoyed chatting with the employees about my animals. I love that they have cats available for adoption in-store. It's a wonderful thing to save an animal, and all three of my cats have been adopted from various shelters in Washington state. If they would let me get another cat, I would have been tempted to get a dozen of them already! I've never bothered shopping for my cats food anywhere else. This is one of my favorite places to shop! (They also have my picky cat's favorite kind of treats! That alone means they have my loyalty at least for the remainder of his life.) read more

I have been going in there for about eight years now. I have two dogs and three cats, so am in there quite often. Everyone has always been helpful, and once when they didn't have something they got it from one of their other locations and called me when it came in. I asked a clerk, Miriam, for help with my cat's dental hygiene regimen. I explained what I already did and asked if she had any suggestions. She gave it a conscientious think and came up with a product I had never heard of, so would never have known to ask for it - and it's perfect for us. I just sprinkle it on her food once a day. I found Miriam professional, knowledgeable, courteous, friendly and obviously she cares deeply for animals. I was impressed. This was my first interaction with Next to Nature. Very COOL store with the BEST prices around! We know: we checked! I agree with the reviews that say the staff is friendly. They certainly always have been to my dogs and my family. They are definitely knowledgeable about nutrition, which is not always the case in these types of stores. Not sure about the parking issue that last person talks about, because there's free parking right in back of the place. Next to Nature has been our family's pet food store for 10 + years -- since we moved to Seattle. They do the right thing by supporting animal rescue organizations and have cats in the store for adoption. They seem to have been copied many times over lately, but once you look past the frenzy, we feel that they have proven themselves to be a valuable member of our community and we will keep on supporting them. read more

The response from Matt P on my review is unbelieveable. I hope the store owner is savvy enough to know when his employees are out of line. I would not recommend shopping at Next to Nature. With excellent stores like MudBay and Petco, both just up the street, there is no reason to have to put up with the kind of trouble that Matt P. caused. BTW. I found that Petco has a large selection of pet carriers. I bought one from them and another from Mudbay. The one that I bought from Petco was not only ~$10 cheaper than at Next to Nature but they also gave me an additional $17.99 off. They are also going to give me a discount on all the purchases I made to get set up for my two new cats. All I need to do is show them the adoption paperwork and the receipts. BTW. Mudbay has a great selection of organic food. They gave me a set of coupons when they learned I had two new cats. They have an amazing selection of cat posts and bedding. This place is great! So, thank you Matt P. If you hadn't been so incredibly rude I never had found Petco and Mudbay. Not only is the selection of items I need better than Next to Nature, they are cheaper too. read more

Next to Nature (Tacoma) staff are helpful until there is a negative issue with a product. The product in question is DentaTreat made by Wysong. After my dogs became sick I found the DentaTreat had hardened in the bottom of the container, changed color and odor. Due to disinterest and arrogant rudeness by both Next to Nature and Wysong I contacted the Washington State Dept of Agriculture. They told me DentaTreat is not registered to be sold in this state and the DentaTreat label is erroneous. It turns out Wysong has only 7 products registered for sale - to date I have found 13 Wysong products being sold in this state which are NOT REGISTERED. Not to mention Wysong doesn't provide expiration dates on the majority of their products. I will never purchase another product from Next to Nature or Wysong. FYI - Always contact and provide the bad product to the Washington State Dept of Agriculture for testing! read more

We are the proud new owners (or should I say custodians?) of two 10-week-old kittens, and as such, we're in the market for new things to us, like cat food and litter. We're lucky in West Seattle to have several non-corporate pet supply shops nearby (as well as a Petco). I had read a couple of reviews on Yelp! that Next to Nature was good, but occasionally had less than stellar customer service. Well, I must have come on a good day, because the help I received was above and beyond what I expected. First I asked about canned kitten vs. cat food and was given a thoughtful response AND some recommendations for personal favorites. A little while later I inquired about litters and again was given a thoughtful response and recommendation. Upon checkout, I was also given 4 small bags of dry cat food samples for his favorite brand to try for free! I couldn't have felt more taken care of or asked for a better experience. We'll definitely be going back. :) read more

I don't really get all the hate being directed at the store...I shop there pretty often and I've always had great experiences! Their selection of pet food is top-notch, the toys (and, yes, animal clothes if you really must) are awesome and contrary to what a few of the reviews on here have said, the staff has always been really helpful and polite. They always make me feel at ease, and they're generally very knowledgeable about the content and quality of the pet foods they sell. Zonky, my German Shepherd has been WAY happier since I started shopping there. I live in West Seattle and am relatively new to Seattle in general. I had my favorite holistic pet store in Austin and was looking for something similar up here and have gone to a handful. Next to Nature has a lot of selection, and they always have a lovely treat platter for the dogs, but prices are definitely a little bit more than Mudbay. I would give the place a higher rating, but I had a weird experience where one of their employees who was helping me make the pet tag for my dog. Shortly after I left the store, I started receiving texts from him. He kept sending them, until I told him it made me feel uncomfortable that he took my number from something that was the business property for personal use, without my consent or anything. He stopped then. But since then, when I've come back to the store and see him there, I just want to leave. It's super sketchy because that means he also has my home address and could just as easily just stalk me. read more

I volunteer with Friends of the Animals Foundation, a West Seattle cat rescue group that houses cats and kittens at Next to Nature while awaiting new homes. I would like to put in a good word for Matt P, other staff members, and the owners who have the best interest of our rescued cats at heart. While our cats are cared for by volunteers twice a day, sometimes issues come up during the day when volunteers are not at Next to Nature. Next to Nature staff always alert Friends of the Animals if there is an issue with a cat. They provide all supplies to our cats and kittens for adoption in the store, offer a discount to our foster homes, and offer a discount to new FAF "parents" on the day of adoption. We have adopted out well over a thousand cats and kittens in the past 10 years through Next to Nature. read more
