These guys (again, off the street, no truck or anything) weren't going to be who i hired. So i had 2 companies come inspect & bid (both priced the same) and i went with Ed's. Oscar is the owner, Ed's son, and he's been doing chimneys for his whole life. When the owner is actually doing the work himself (like i do) is always an "im sold" situation for me. He and his assistant were at my place, on time, at a time that worked for me, for 5 hrs/3 days. Oscar explained every detail, answered all my questions, spotted some minor leak related stuff on my roof and fixed it at no extra charge. He is VERY in tune with maintaining high customer satisfaction. He was also conscious of making sure no carbon monoxide would creep into the house. He improved upon that exact situation that a previous heating company handled in an inferior capacity. They left no mess. Kirin came by to do the work, and you can tell he really enjoys his craft - he was meticulous and took his time to get everything just right. They redid the counter flashing, cleaned and sealed both chimneys, replaced spalling bricks, applied Crown Coat, installed new stainless steel rain caps, and replaced a window flashing. They also repaired window trim bricks to coordinate with my window replacement, and gave me a very good price for that extra work. Everything was done on schedule, and the work looks fantastic. It's not easy to find good contractors. I'd definitely call them again and recommend them to anyone who needs chimney or masonry work.

But he didn't stop there, even though they didn't install the wonky one, he made his way to the other side of the house, on a pretty darn hot day where roofs can amplify that heat and realized that was the cap I was calling about. But rather than dismissing it because they hadn't done the original install, he righted it and didn't see it as having any serious problems. He went far above and beyond. Finally called the business who couldn't find him and was told he took pics and doesn't need to come back. Spoke to them on what I wanted done and was promised to get an estimate that same evening. It's been almost a week and nothing. No call, no email, no estimate, no nothing. Unprofessional, extremely disappointing.

Also had them replace the wood trim around the top of this zero clearance fireplace. It took about two weeks for the fabrication of the new stainless steel chase cover. This wasn't an easy install, 28' up on a 8/12 pitched roof. David, the project manager showed up with two workers and got the job done in about five hours. They did a great job, removed old chase and wood trim around the top, installed new chase, wood trim and painted all new material to match existing house color. I had three other chimney companies come out and give bids, none really seemed interested in doing this job, all were looking for masonry work or a bigger project. I would use this company again for any type of chimney repair work.

We figured it was time to get it looked at, so we called Taylor at Cascade Chimney and Masonry. Had no trouble making an appointment and he came and looked at the chimney and fireplace and said, basically, "yep, everything's good. You don't need it cleaned." He was apparently (I wasn't there, this is hearsay) very nice and when asked how much we owed him for the service stop he said we didn't owe him anything. So, my recommendation is that you call this guy and have him service your chimney and you will know that if he's doing the work, you really need it. We did give him a bottle of soda that we'd been keeping for a special occasion, so maybe have a bottle of soda handy if your chimney turns out to be just fine.

From the first call I was hooked and confident, we'd made the right decision. Randy showed up right on time and he truly looked like what I'd imagine a chimney sweep might dress like! (My only vision of a chimney sweep was Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins). Randy was kind enough to let me take his picture. Come on yelp, let us post pics! Fast Service and easy accommodating scheduling. October 2010 Originally scheduled Randy for a fireplace inspection of our Oil Furnace and Fireplace Full inspection and cleaning of your fireplace, hearth, chimney, and flue system. Randy had identified safety issues with our existing wood stove. Primarily a faulty flue open /close mechanism and it's configuration so we'd agreed to re-schedule the cleaning portion for a later date. He'd reviewed the efficiency of our existing wood stove. Made some suggestions about other wood stove options that might be better for our space. Also referred us to another company for the wood stove options. Randy was patient and taking the time to answer all of my questions being a new home owner. Very knowledgeable about codes and what we'd need to modify to bring the existing system up to code. August 2011 Knew we'd need to schedule Randy to come out for the cleaning and spaced it out two weeks ahead of our desired schedule date. Given the convenience in scheduling back in October, was confident we could get something scheduled even with my lack of advanced notice. We'd phoned Randy again last week to schedule the chimney cleaning for the fireplace and oil boiler chimney. We were replacing the wood stove with a gas insert. The contractor's replacing the boiler and installing the gas insert removed the old wood stove so we could prep for the new install of liners with clean chimneys. Once the wood stove was fully pulled out and the surround removed, there was a good 12" of soot and debris sitting on both sides of the wood stove in the fireplace. The top of the firebox /wood stove had a good 9" of soot stacked on the top of the unit. Thought this was going to be a HUGE mess. No way anyone's going to be able to remove this without it scattering throughout the house. Sure enough, Randy had it all tidy like it'd never been dirty. I should've watched how it was done as I still can't believe it. Looking at his website information now, it shouldn't have been a surprise with their Clean House Guarantee. Apparently the stove's vent wasn't lined up with the flue to vent the smoke and had been circulating in the vacant space behind the stove's surround. This was all accumulating from the previous owner's use of the stove. The air quality wasn't a concern for us as Randy had identified the safety issues with us in October. We'd wisely heeded his recommendations and hadn't ever used the wood stove. Thank you Randy for your fast service, easy scheduling and clean house guarantee. This project went so much smoother with your assistance. Can't imagine what our indoor air quality would've been like if we'd been burning that wood stove from October 2010 to February 2011. Had we tried to clean the chimney and fireplace ourselves, suspect we'd still be trying to clean up soot for years to come.
