July 2025..Life is full of little surprises. I lived in Newtown over 40 years ago and always loved this gem of a store. Its everything I remember a hardware store being as a kid. Squeaking wood floors, lots of wood drawers full of nuts, bolts, screws. And friendly, knowledgeable guys to help walk you around to appreciate a truly home town store with history in the area. I drove from Flemington NJ just to look at pocket knives, which I knew they would have. And I bought one that I will leave to my son when I pass on. I love Newtown, its history, and Newtown Hardware Store. Going there in November to buy all my Christmas gifts to share fond memories with my family. We need more store and people like these. Called the store looking for sulfuric acid for my sump pump battery and was told they didn't have any. Drove to Ace and they didn't carry the item. While I was getting ready to drive to Langhorne, Newtown Hardware called me back and found the item in the basement and it was the last bottle and they are ordering me more. Newtown Hardware House is an old school hardware store still doing its thing after all of these years. Once upon a time, hardware stores like this could be found everywhere. But with the advent of the monolithic Home Depot and Lowes, shops like this have nearly gone extinct. It's a bit melancholy to be sure, but there's no way to fight the relentless march of time. The only thing we can do is support the business we value and want in our community. Despite their small footprint, Newtown Hardware House is actually quite a serviceable store. Over the years I've stopped in to pick up various items like screws, wire, flag brackets, household accessories, paint brushes, tools and electrical accessories. These things probably would have been cheaper elsewhere, put shopping here is always a much quicker, personal and satisfying experience. It's also located next to Starbucks, a big plus for coffee drinkers like myself! In the end, it's clear that Newtown Hardware House is never going to be able to compete with big box stores, but I definitely feel like there is a market for them to service. I really hope they can survive this infernal pandemic and their everyday competition as the years go on. read more

Back around the turn of the century we redid the original kitchen on our 1958 house. We bought Ikea cabinets and have been pretty happy with them. Unfortunately I cracked the glass on one and my wife hasn't seemed to forget this faux pas for some reason. The good people at IKEA chose to discontinue the family of kitchen systems we bought - it was what they had at the time and no one seems to have parts! We are living with the cracked glass. About a year ago a door started to pull off a cabinet. This was diagnosed as a missing screw. Ikea has wonderful support for current products but ... discontinued! I've been looking on and off for this screw for months. Today for some reason I thought of this place in Newtown. It was just like 1975! I walked up to the counter waited a minute and an all American kid walks up smiles and asked how he could help me. I pulled the missing screw from another cabinet so I'd have an example to bring with me. I gave it to him telling him it was from an IKEA product and probably metric. He said probably so, and walked to a aisle with a huge WALL of boxes of screws bolts washers and whatnot on each side. He tries the screw in a jig to find the thread walks over to a box reaches in and voila! OMG is Disco back too? I bought three so I'll never have this problem again. The price? Fifty seven fing cents!!!!! That's 19 cents each. Quite frankly I'm driving here to Newtown for hardware as long as I'm able. For a little more having a resource like this is something deserving of my support. One day you might need some weird thingamagig. If you don't support this place you might not be able to get it. IKEAs solution is to buy a new kitchen. I think Newtown Hardware House has a better solution and you can walk around and window shop in a traditional small city a bit too! For you kids who have never known an America without Roe (vote, vote, VOTE) that means walking by stores and looking in their windows. Some things like tube TV's or carburetors aren't missed much. Original hardware shop in a history rich town! They have everything you need - and if they don't have it, it can easily be ordered. We always stop in for gifts here - the front section has a gift area - for house warmings, for those who like to cook/host, fun gifts for guys, and toys for all ages (many are pretty nostalgic). What a little treasure - this store makes me wish I lived in the area. We were shopping on Sunday when we ventured in (we saw gifts in the window, great merchandising) and then realized we needed a lawn care product so it was a win/win. Coming around the corner I spy a cast iron skillet which I've always wanted and only $35 too! Joe explained to me that although I had missed a demonstration the day before, he explained how to season and care for my new skillet! This nice little hard ware store is a throw back to an earlier time. They stay in business because the service is great. The selection is limited however and it's hard to find what you need without a bit of help- from the friendly staff. It's a great choice for a quick fix. I can't believe I have never put a review up here! Newtown Hardware is a gem, a true classic hardware store according to both my father and father-in-law (who are far more handy than me). Every time I have a home improvement need I try to hit them first. From a very manageable selection of hooks, screws, nails, tape, light switches, etc. to simple seasonal items like firewood bundles, you will most likely find what you need. Plus, the staff are all friendly, helpful and actually KNOW WHAT THE ITEMS DO!! For anyone who wants to talk about "buying local" or "support your downtown" make a stop here first. Even if you don't find what you were looking for, the visit is a wonderful, warm bit of nostalgia that will give you the strength you need to brave the aisles of a cold, impersonal mega-hardware store with tons of useless/poorly made crap. read more

Great traditional hardware store that has way more items than you might think. Prices are not bad either. They also are very willing to special order anything that they don't have in stock. You can usually find a spot on the street but the lot in back is almost a sure thing. The staff is great and helpful too. I really wanted to like this place because of its old time feel and mainly because it's not a chain. A friend told me they'll send kitchen knives out for sharpening as I was looking for a place. I dropped them off on a Sunday. Knives are sent out Wednesday's and are ready for pick up the following wednesday. I called that next weeks wednesday to see if the knives arrived yet or if they were to come in later in the day. I was told my knives only went out that day. When I asked why that was, I was told my knives were just "overlooked" for last weeks pick up. The next week I went in to pick mine up and asked again why it took 2 weeks. The man first said I dropped them off too late. I showed him my pick up ticket showing the date was a Sunday, so definitely not too late for a wednesday pick up. Then he pretty much mumbled a "yeah sorry bout that" dismissal. No offer for half price or anything to make me satisfied. Someone who cares about having sharp chef knives is someone who uses them often. To be without them an extra week was inconvenient. read more
