I made sure to do my research before picking an optometrist in the LA area. As many other people do, I went based off the yelp reviews I saw on here and was very hopeful. Upon arriving to Dr. Newman's office, I encountered a slightly passive aggressive behavior from her receptionists/assistant but didn't think much of it.
Dr. Newman came in shortly after to see me and after doing (what felt like) an extensive series of tests, she started to tell me that I would need a special type of glasses and started getting very far ahead into detail and almost "selling" them to me. I let her talk and then asked how much these would be costing, to which she responded $1800, but that she would help me out $300 for being a student. I honestly bought it, and told her that I would talk to my parents and see if they could financially help me out since I make very little money as a graduate student.
I walked out her office to go pay my copay, which I thought was much less than what it was, so I asked for the breakdown. To my surprise, only half of my cost for the day ($100) was supposedly for a missed appointment! $50 for a missed appointment?! I told the receptionist that I am more than happy to pay for the costs of my services today, but that "I would really appreciate if you could kindly remove this $50 no-show fee as a courtesy to me since I am a student and money is tight for me." It was then that I saw both the receptionist's and assistant's demeanors change from passive aggressive to aggressive with me. They started telling me that it was "not possible" and cutting into my sentences when I was trying to just talk to them about this. That's when I started to get uncomfortable and asked if I could please talk to the doctor herself then. "Well she's with another patient so you're gonna have to wait then."
"Okay, no worries, I will sit here and wait to speak with her." I sat down for half an hour waiting in the office, and then the assistant pulled up a chair and sat down in front of me. "Here's what we can do for you: if you agree to buy the lenses that doctor told you about, then we can put forth the $50 for the payment of the lenses instead." ......................??!?! Are you also shocked reading this? I immediately realized that this was pure manipulation and told them so. "I was going to speak to my parents about buying $1800 lenses from you and you are not even willing to cancel a $50 fee for a first-time patient? And instead what to coerce them into buying from you?" Talk about a messed up business plan!
I then asked where the doctor was so I could speak to her. The assistant said that she had just spoken to her. I said "I was supposed to speak to her myself, I have been waiting here the whole time to do so." She replied, "well she's with a patient." I said "so how did you speak to her then?" She froze and didn't know how to respond and just stared at me with freaky eyes. I then stood up and said "I have work to do today and want to leave, and I want to speak to the doctor myself out here." They said fine and walked away and told me to continue waiting.
Finally, after another 15 minutes, the doctor comes out. Before I could even say anything, she says "Look niki, I'm just going to waive this fee for you today as courtesy, okay? Just make sure to cancel in advance next time." I then responded and said "Thank you and I respect that, but I absolutely do not appreciate your assistant coming out here and trying to manipulate me into buying lenses from you. That makes me doubt everything you told me during our appointment." Dr.Newman responded and said something along the lines of "Oh, yeah it's not about trust, the $50 going towards your lenses was just a way for us to, you know, yeah." LOL, what?????
Trying to manipulate your patients this way is really not what a doctor should be doing. I feel like her ultimate goal is 100% money and nothing more. Unfortunately, after doing my own research, I found conflicting results and realized that the lenses she was recommending for me in the first place don't seem legitimate. I am going to go to another doctor who is much more professional and get a second opinion because I don't truly trust this place and the way they handled me. They saw that I was young and feel like they tried to take advantage of me. 0/10, would not recommend to anybody. read more
