After my last visit I just had ti come back and try their pepperoni thin crust pizza. It did not disappoint! Hot, fresh and delicious. I didn't think it would be enough for me but it was more than enough. I'm glad I passed on the side items it would've been too much. Needless to say I was stuffed when I left. I had to sit awhile just to be able to wobble out of the restaurant. I love how they have the drink station set up and the condiments area both are always kept clean the times I have been here. They are firm not mushy, fresh tasting you can smell the lemon flavor and they are a great size. I have worked near the Memphis International Airport for more than 30 years. A coworker and I only go out to eat these days once a week and since the area around the airport is more than a little sketchy, we drive to Southaven. The drive is about 15 minutes each way, so we don't have alot of time to goof around. Today we chose Newk's for lunch. We have probably visited this place once a month or so since it opened. Admittedly the service and food have varied a bit over the years but never too much. Today, we decided to try out the new self ordering system. Not good. It took Way longer than dealing with even the most apathetic cashier in the past. The system is not very intuitive and just a bit hard to navigate. It also asks for a Tip up front. Maybe I am wrong here, but when did it become customary to tip Before Service is Rendered? My friend got his food in a pretty timely manner but I did not. Finally, after my friend was about halfway through with his meal a young lady walked out with a ticket and asked me a few questions about my order. Five minutes or so later, out came my Ultimate Salad. It had almost No Dressing on it even though I had asked for Two dressings, Ranch and Balsamic Vinagerette. The person making my salad was very confused by this order and kept wanting to put Honey Mustard on my salad. Slow, Slow, Slow. I had to get a to go container since our lunch break was ending and eat my salad at my desk later. I absolutely love Newks, but this visit was less than subpar. Upon entering the restaurant, I immediately noticed how dirty the food prep area was. There were bags of lettuce/salad mix that were just sitting on the counters, the floors in both the dinning area and food prep area were covered with food and trash. One major thing that caught my eye was not all staff members that were preparing food had on mask or gloves. I even witnessed one employee scratch her arm as well as eat food in the food prep area without washing her hands before putting on clean gloves to continue bagging the food orders. At this location you have staff open mouth chomping gum at the register, vaping in the dining room , dressing coming from the back kitchen and as they walk through the dining room. Trash on the floor and grime everywhere while staff standing around. It appears a number of young people are hanging out unsupervised while someone is working. There are a number of folks out of uniform going behind the counter and in the back, including children. A woman came in who is apparently a manager, the unsupervised children were hers. Service was very slow especially with all the staff standing around and little to no customers though flavor was good. There's no chance I'll give this location another chance! My co-workers and myself frequently visit this location for lunch since it's near our job. Originally, the customer service and food was consistently great! As a matter fact, it was normal for us to eat here at least 3 days out of our 5 day work week. However, lately the only thing that has been consistent is disappointment after disappointment. I ordered a ceaser salad today for lunch and more than half of my romaine is visibly old. The ceaser dressing, which is normally delcious and thick has a water like consistency and barely tastes like ceaser dressing. It's not even edible. Now, I'm hungry and can't eat until the end of my shift which is 3:30 p.m. after spending $10.00 on a salad! On a separate occasion my husband bought me a ceaser salad and it consisted of every type lettuce but romaine. In addition to having the wrong lettuce the chicken was hard and dried out. I called and spoke with a manager after explaining that the salad wasnt edible and was told to bring the salad and receipt back to Southaven from Olive Branch in order to be compensated. The lobster crab bisque is better than any other I've ever had, including in Maine. The chicken sandwich with goat cheese and roasted peppers is my favorite. The chicken salad and pimento cheese are great as well. I'm not a salad eater, but their salads are huge. The sweet tea is a little too sweet. They have a large variety of good desserts, likes moist cakes and huge brownies. Newk's was started by the same guy that started McAlister's. It's a fairly local chain, as it too started in Oxford. It's a little more upscale than McAlister's and a tad bit more pricey. It's well worth the higher prices. read more
