My heart melts for Newhall Community Park. I know it's labeled as a "dog park" but it's seriously so much more than just that. While you will encounter your fair share of cute little doggies, you'll also be exposed to the beautiful views of Galindo Creek along with tons of active ducks and scenic walking and hiking trails. Before I started exploring other parts of the Bay, Newhall Community Park was my go-to park for light hiking and relaxation. And while I admit that I don't get out to this park nearly as much as I used to, it always feels like I never left when I sporadically decide to make a visit. This is definitely that local gem that you wanna tell everyone about, but not really. Sometimes I just wanna be greedy and keep it all to myself. But then, I think about how everyone should enjoy this glorious park. I love going for walks here. There are two main paths that run parallel to each other that run throughout the park. I usually connect here from a trail that runs through the Markham Nature Arboretum. The trail stops briefly behind Mel's Diner and picks right back up again across the street. There's a concrete hill with a gate in front. This trail will connect you right to Newhall Community Park. If you feel like you're lost, just look for a green street-like sign that says "Newhall Pk" at the top of the hill. If you keep going straight down the path, it'll lead you there. I love that you can veer off onto other hiking trails here too. The California Riding & Hiking Trail runs through this park too and will connect you to the Concord side of Lime Ridge Open Space. There are some great inclines that will really get your heart pumping. One of the trails actually leads to the Concord Vietnam Memorial. Also at the top of hill are sweeping view of Mount Diablo and the rolling Contra Costa hills. The views are truly breathtaking, even in the dead of summer. Speaking of summer, it gets extremely HOT out in this area. If you plan to hit the trails during when it's hot, make sure you lather up with sunscreen and bring plenty of water because most of trails are exposed with minimal shade. The actual park itself it just darling. There's a huge grassy field and a dog pit that's perfect for wandering dog play. The ducks like to hang around in the grass too, so you might get to see them walking around. Galindo Creek sits right in the middle of the park. If you can find a nice shady spot near the creek, do it! The views of the creek are so peaceful. It's a nice place to picnic too. There's also a small playground making this park perfect for the kiddos. It's just an all-around great local park with so much to offer.

It's funny how I live so close to this park but never stopped to enjoy it until now. My son would have lacrosse practices here during the off season. I would drop him off and pick him up before he learned how to drive. Then he drove himself and I no longer had a reason to visit. It was a beautiful night and we decided to get some fresh air and head over to Newhall Park with the family after dinner. My husband and daughter rode their bikes while my son and I walked. Lots of families were out enjoying the weather or letting their dogs play and get some exercise in the dog park. The bathrooms are kind of sketchy and dark when you close the door. Thankfully there is running water to wash your hands. Parking is plentiful. People were social distancing- some wearing masks, some not. But we're outdoors and there's so much space to walk freely without ever getting too close to anyone. Everyone was friendly and said hello as you passed them by. The geese were honking and roaming around minding their own business. This is their park after all. LOL Newhall Park is lovely especially during the evening when the sun sets. I think I will have to visit more often.

Big dogs. Small dog park. Bad dog dad.

A small dog owner's DOG PARK REVIEW There's a reason smaller and larger dogs have different play areas, people Based on the pics and reviews, we were happy to take the extra 40 minutes it took to get there because the park seemed so inviting and a perfect place for my little terrier to get a little exercise after flying all day. Sadly, my dog and I were only able to stay for 15 minutes. It shouldn't be so hard to explain to a larger dog owner why his animal can't be in a small dog area especially after you've explained that your small dog has been abused and attacked by a larger dog....BUT I did my best to explain to Romeo and Juliet's ( 2 adorable Dalmatian puppies ) owner that no matter how sweet his dogs were, my dog would be triggered if they were to crowd him -then he would snip and while most likely his dogs wouldn't become aggressive. Who knows, right? Plus, my dog wasn't going be able to run around freely because he's afraid of larger dogs... Upon pointing that his dogs were twice the size of a dog that should be in the small dog park, I was told that my dog has a problem, I have a problem and maybe we should leave. Bad dog park etiquette to say the least! Plus, shame on all the other locals...No one stood in my defense because they all knew and liked the Dalmatians owner and have small dogs without a history like mine.

Far and away the best park in suburban Concord (East Bay Regionals and Mt. Diablo are beside the point). Excellent split dog parks (for the bigs and the littles), brand new playground for the kids, soccer field, softball field, bocce courts, tons of open space, Memorial Hill with gorgeous views of the entire Clayton-Concord-Martinez-beyond area, three separate parking lots, tons of turtles/geese/ducks, and a 1-mile loop of a gravel running path. I come to this park regularly for hill runs, but have been here more times than I can count in the last 15 years for parties, hangouts, bocce ball games, sunset walks, early morning runs, etc. It's a do-it-all kinda park that caters to pretty much anyone. Major points scored for being clean, well-designed and safe. Thank you for existing! Concord needs many more places like this.

Gorgeous little park hidden in a residential area in Concord. From all the reviews, I wasn't expecting much. After walking around the entire perimeter of the park for 2-2.5 miles, I was blown away by this hidden gem in Contra Costa County. The best part of this park is hiking up this ginormous mountain to watch the sunset. No need to join a gym if you live close to this park--running up and down the hill get you in shape without putting a dent in your wallet.

All three got a great amount of exercise walking and running around here

Didnt realize this gem was so close to our house. Great for dogs or a lazy day at the park. There are areas hidden away with green grass and lots and lots of mature tree shade. Large duck pond, A stream, lots of open grass space for them to run on-but lots of duck poop.... I might take my dogs here twice a day now that i know it exists! Check it out

I love this park! The views are amazing! There's ponds with ducks, a dog park, bocci ball courts! There's a long bike/walking trail. Plus the playground is clean. I'm so glad we live so close to this beautiful area.

Greta place to take the doggies. Two off leash areas, one for little dogs, and one for big dogs. They have water and and poop bags.

Ask the Community - Newhall Community Park

Can the picnic area in the Bocce court be reserved for a party?

I do not believe so. You might call just to see if they will. Otherwise just show up early and lay a tablecloth down.

Is the dog park for the bigger dogs fenced?

    Yes

Is fishing allowed and if so what species of fish are there?

I see fishing everyday so i guess its allowed and there are tons of fish in there you can see, especially as the sun goes down. I just discovered there are turtles everywhere in the pond as well

A nice lady shares a great neighborhood park, with enclosed areas that could be useful. Did take asking several people to find it.... It's not easy to assess as must park in neighborhood and walk to the area. Nevertheless... Great park once you find it. There is a an area for little dogs and a separate area for big dogs. I'm not a regular, but each time love gone... I've met well socialized dogs and owners. Everyone is considerate and only once did I see some poo not cleaned up...ie conscientious, responsible owners. Nice area and clean park! It's next to a small trail that is kind of hidden in a neighborhood area…read more The park itself is a bit hidden. Google map will tell you "you have arrived" when you are on the main road (Clayton road/marsh creek), but the park itself is inaccessible from the main road. We took the first next turn after Google maps alerted us, parked on the street, walked on the trail path for a short distance and found the dog park. There were only one dog with one owner when we first got there and my dog had fun playing (Nice dog and owner!). After they left, we walked the trail for 2.5 miles then came back and more dogs - yay!! My puppy had a blast playing with all the dogs as all the dogs he met were nice. Also, nice owners! Everyone was "Claytonians" that live near by. I asked them if this dog park doesn't have a lot of visitors and they confirmed that most of the times there are only a few dogs or none. I hope more nice visitors would frequent this dog park so I can come here more often with my puppy as it's such a nice dog park/area! This park is good for shy dogs I guess (my puppy is not at all shy - he's the opposite). We will be back, but maybe just not as frequently until the dog park gets more dogs visitors.
