Love to support local businesses and even better when they sell great products. I'd heard of them online so I stopped by the store/kitchen to see if I could try some. It was close to the end of the day so there was only one employee there, forgot to get her name, but she was super friendly and helpful. I tried the original, I thought it was similar in texture to a shortbread cookie. I ended up buying 6 bags for Christmas presents. Plus I got to use the 20% off check in offer! Score!

I was sitting on a Super Bowl Yelp Tour bus, when an adorable woman across the aisle isle asked if I would like to try a sample of her candy that she was working to turn in to full-scale business. Little did I know at the time, I was talking to The Frittle Queen, the guru of nostalgic candy, the friendly smile behind Frittle Candy, Carrie Abbott! My personal favorite of her line of classic-style hard candies is the toasted coconut brittle. I've become quite the coconut fan as of late and just a square or two of this oh.so.tasty. candy hits the spot. For only $6 a box (at Indiana State Museum, Avec Moi, Goose, Homespun and more), you can share this charming and stylish box of candy. I'm a huge sucker for clever and clean branding - so when I saw the transition from Carrie's trial days of plastic baggies and labels to her current cardboard square box packaging complete with charming cursive font made me smile from ear to ear. I'm so happy for you, Carrie. Can't wait to see how other businesses in the community incorporate your product into their own menus.

ADDICTIVE. Can't stop, won't stop (just like TSwift). The original peanut frittle is exactly what it says: a little sweet peanut treat. But the star of the show in my book is the pralines. GOOD GRACIOUS, is this what the heavens are made of?? Melt in your mouth sweetness with a crunch. I bought some right on the spot at Indieana Handicraft Exchange. It is taking all the strength in me not to eat the entire bag in one sitting. Note that it has a shelf life of less than a week, so plan accordingly if it will be a gift. If it's for yourself, well, I don't think you'll have any issues devouring it before it expires... Newfangled also makes spicy pecans. Any of these treats would make a sweet gift or stocking stuffer!

This is where the magic happens!

Having seen some Yelp reviews for 'Frittle Candy", I soon learned that the business behind the candy was called Newfangled Confections and it's just a stones throw off Mass Avenue on North Street. I stopped by the simple green house and grabbed a spot in the parking lot next door. There's a small sign in the window that has the company name and I saw they were open, so it was time to experience the amazing treats for myself! The owner/creator of the candy was there and she was packing a lot of samples to take to a trade show, but took time out to greet and help me pick out a package of Sweet & Spicy Pecans and a box of Frittle. The pecans are coated with both brown sugar and sugar, butter, and a combination of spices that add a little savory flavor to the initial taste. Then, there is a surprise as the spices kick in a bit of heat on the aftertaste. Quite tasty! The candy that seems to draw the most attention (well deserved!) is the Frittle. I've seen reviews try to describe it and the best I can offer is that it is a sweet peanut flavored candy that is cut into small flat squares. The texture is somewhere between that of peanut butter fudge and peanut brittle. There is a little bit of crunch, but much softer than I expected. I've done a lot of candy making on my own and know it is quite labor intensive and can be very unforgiving if the temperature isn't right. Heat it too slowly and the moisture steams off. Heat it too quickly and you run the risk of burning the sugars on the bottom of the pan (it can ruin a whole batch!) The ingredients swell and bubble and to the untrained eye will look like it will be done, but you have to keep stirring and watching. It's no wonder that the small boxes sell for about $5..not for the ingredients, but for the time it takes. And it will be $5 that you won't regret spending! Review #1378

Seriously, if you haven't tried Frittle, the pralines, and/or the spicy & sweet pecans, you'd better get over to Newfangled Confections ASAP. You can find them here at the kitchen or at your local Kroger, Homespun (nearby store on Mass Ave.), Wildwood Market, etc. Any of these would make for a great gift or picnic addition. Carrie is awesome, funny, and kind. She clearly has a passion for what she's making and is an active member of the Indianapolis community. Who wouldn't want to support a business with her as a leader? But really, get some Frittle for that person that likes peanut brittle + fudge, pralines for the super sweet and sugary lovers, and sweet and spicy nuts for people that like a little heat. You'll love it!

I had the pleasure of attending a Meet the Maker event here yesterday and got my first peek at this local candy store. I never realized that Newfangled Confections had an actual storefront steps from Mass Ave, although I always try to find them at local markets and events. Why? Because Frittle is easily one of the most popular small gifts I give! It makes a great hostess gift (especially if there are kids/you want an alternative to booze), a fantastic stocking stuffer, and everyone in my family loves it. You can't go wrong with Frittle. However, my absolute favorite Newfangled Confections item (so far!) is the pecan praline. Seriously addictive! The sweet and spicy nuts also make a fabulous addition to any cheese plate or salad! You can stop by this location to purchase Frittle, pecan pralines, or the sweet and spicy nuts, but you can also find the pralines at your local Yats and the other items at local markets and events. Frittle has recently been introduced to 25 local Kroger stores and is available at 13 Market District locations, so this Indy favorite is easy to find!

Two words describing Newfangled Confections candy: Addictively delicious! I will be trying, buying, eating, repeating these tasty confections. These candies are "The Bomb" - yes I said it! The Pralines melt in your mouth with buttery, sugary, nutty goodness. The Frittle is a deliciously sweet, softer, peanut brittle. All candies are Gluten Free so these make great tasty gifts for friends with special dietary needs. At a recent event I was able to try the owners version of the Peppermint Meringue and that is when the world stopped for a moment. The best part is Owner Carrie Abbott is super sweet, friendly, and helpful. She has great stories to share about her business making purchasing from her even that much more special. Her store is located in the Mass Ave area and sounds like a place where a lot of fun happens. I plan to stop in the next time I am in the area! The great news is you can also purchase these treats at businesses around the city and online. Check out the website for more details.

I tried the soft caramels via Market. They are wonderful; smooth, buttery caramel, not too sweet. Perfect.

Because their were so many choices it was hard for my grandson to decide until the store clerk mentioned she just made some grab bags. Excited he was. Across the way is some sort of train thing, so I'm sensing a theme. My children got an ice cream cone (Blue Moon) and a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cup. They have kids' sizes, which is appreciated. I am not an ice cream person, so I got two hand-dipped peanut butter cups, one for each hand: one milk chocolate, and the other dark chocolate. Both were delicious! We ate our treats at a table on the outdoor patio. There is lots of outdoor seating, and zero indoor seating. So, your options are to sit outside or get your goodies to go. The people who work here are polite and patient, which is also appreciated. You know how it goes when you visit a sweets shop with kids -- they can't make up their mind about what they want. But the people behind the counter were very kind and waited with the utmost patience while my children made their decision about which ice cream flavor to choose.
