Á la Christmas Story, went for Chinese food on Christmas Day due to not being able to travel to our normal family dinner. The place was notably busy and they seemed prepared. We did carry out; do note that there is not much (none) seating at this restaurant. I ordered General Tsos, chicken with broccoli, and broccoli in garlic. All dishes tasted good and were ready within the 25 minutes that they quoted upon ordering. Prices were also reasonable; I felt like we got a ton of food for less than $50 for a family of four. Ordered delivery on 9/27/21. Everything had a strange bitter and slightly sour aftertaste. Must be a chemical they use or in the ingredients they use, but it's absolutely disgusting. I typically order from this place, one time I decided to get take out. When I got there the place was pretty much a hole in the wall. After watching them prepare my food and leaving with it, I could not even eat it when I got home. Everything looked like a huge blob of processed, not fresh, unhealthy food in their kitchen.There was no smell at all. Btw, you could see right in the kitchen. I will tell you it is probably adequate as take-out Chinese for anyone who does not know what good Chinese food taste like. This place is in a dying strip mall. I had wonton soup and shrimp and lobster sauce. The wontons were hard and I have no idea what kind of meat was inside. there was excessive use of pepper on the shrimp and lobster sauce to give this tasteless dish some flavor. This really is my favorite Chinese food. It's always been my go to, and I've been trying a new dish every time I order. Today when I ordered I asked if a dish had oyster sauce, and was told no. They called me back but I missed the call. When my husband went to pick the food up they told him two other things we ordered had it and they were concerned if I was allergic. Then they promptly told him they could make everything without it and remade the other dishes. This is above and beyond customer service, they didn't even know I was allergic and they were attentive enough to inform us. I usually get the sweet and sour chicken combo platter and it is always excellent although everything else I've tried here has been as well. Late night at work and craving Chinese food.... I was feeling boring and ordered beef and broccoli. I also added an order of steamed dumplings. The beef and broccoli was pretty good, but I took one bite of the dumpling and had to spit it out. I don't think I've ever eaten rotten meat before, but I'm pretty sure I did that night. I also mix it up each time and try a new dish that has yet to disappoint. This little hole in the wall is family owned and run; each family member works hard to run a successful restaurant. New Star in Hellertown, PA, is hands-down the ***WORST **** experience I have ever had at any restaurant!! With what I just experienced from a staff member, I would classify it as absolutely ***horrific! **** They are VERY unprofessional, and with that kind of attitude, frankly have NO business being in a customer service-oriented profession. Furthermore, the food was disgusting, end-of-the-day "spare parts" type of food, and it was so fried and dried out, I couldn't eat it. It made my physically sick to my stomach from what little bit I did eat. I have had bad experiences at restaurants, as well as other various places, the same as any person has had. And while some people are prone to write reviews as a result of these bad experiences, I am NOT someone who has ever written a restaurant review --- This is, in fact, the first of my entire life. As a "water under the bridge" type of person, I don't sweat the small stuff. However, the two women I just spoke to on the phone, after receiving a bad order of food from them, were by far the most unprofessional people I have ever encountered in any business and/or restaurant. I WAS a regular customer of this restaurant. Their food has always been mediocre at best, but I am a VERY busy full-time student, with a full-time job, and work about 15 hours a day, going straight from work to class, with barely minutes to spare. Thus, I have ordered from them several times because they are convenient for someone with a very hectic schedule who has literally no free time. On one of the more recent occasions, I placed an order with New Star, and the woman charged my credit card two times. When I tried to talk to her about it, she was extremely rude and combative. I heard her talking "crap" on me in the background because the delivery guy who used his phone to call her while at my front door handed me his phone to speak with her. When he handed me the phone, she was still mid-conversation with someone else, and didn't realize I was on the phone while she was talking badly about me.. The reason the delivery guy had to call her was because she forgot to include my credit card payment/receipt on his delivery slip, so he needed to verify that it was paid before leaving the food; which, was fine. When I spoke to her, I didn't mention that I heard her, but did tell her that she definitely charged me already. She refused to accept this, and charged me again. I checked my credit card statement, and saw that she did in fact charge me twice. Even despite this horrible behavior, I decided to give them one more chance and order from them again this past Monday. I ordered the food just an hour before they closed, and had it delivered. Upon delivery, I was full-on engulfed in my studies, so did not open the food until about 30 minutes after delivery. The dish I ordered was one I always order, but it was absolutely disgusting, and seemed to be a mish-mash of what they had left over at the end of the night. The chicken was so dried out, I couldn't eat it and threw it out. What little bit I did eat, made me physically sick. I just called - a mere 24 hours later - to tell this lady about the issue with my food. Rather than listen to me, the staff passed me around to various people, and MADE ME BREAK DOWN, AND DEFEND, TO THE EXTENT OF BEING CALLED A LIAR, EVERY SECOND OF MY SCHEDULE!!! Even though I am a regular customer, she said that I cannot call 24 hours later to report the food. I tried to explain to her that by the time I opened the food, they were closed, and that the next day, I began work at 8am, and ended class at 10pm, with absolutely NO break (not even an hour break!). She continued to make me break down hour-by-hour what I did that day, which I found unbelievable! At every turn, she argued and said (VERBATIM!): "Oh Im sure you could have found 30 seconds of your day to call here to tell us the food was bad". I didn't even know how to respond to something like this! I'm not sure what kind of life she has, but people like me who are full-time students and workers literally do not have 30 seconds of the day. And more importantly, I only called 24 Hours later ! I could understand if I waited 5 days or a week, then I wouldn't expect anything. But as a regular customer, and as only 24 hours time passed, replacing the food shouldn't have been an issue. More importantly, I should NOT have to provide a minute-by-minute break-down of my schedule of my day! If a customer calls and reports bad food, the restaurant should trust that this is true. The customer should not be attacked and called a liar. Especially when they are a regular customer of that restaurant. Lastly, I have no reason to lie about the food being bad... And I have never called them to complain before. I would NOT go to this restaurant, the food is bad, and so is the staff's attitude. read more
