My family and I go there pretty often. My husband always gets the number 14 seafood, my son gets the number 20 combination pho and I get the 21 tendon pho. Summer rolls are always made fresh. On the hot days we get the cold noodle dishes. The family that runs place always friendly. Be patient if you get a server whose English is not so clear. Great food great experience! Quick service, Family owned and ran. Third son owns Ding Tea. I got the Pho my parents got the Banh Mi and the Vermecelli noodles and they bot said it was good food. This "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. My mom and I finally had the chance to try it, and, boy, what a treat! We ordered takeout since my mom is elderly. We ordered the steamed rice with pork chop - shredded pork and eggs (38), shrimp and eggplant (don't know the number), beef stewed with noodle (3), crispy egg noodles special with shrimp (51), and the Hong Kong rice noodles (33). Everything was delicious! My mom liked the shrimp and eggplant best. (I couldn't find it on the menu, but the server knew what I was talking about). The pork chop and the shrimp and eggplant were among my favorites. I loved the beef stewed with noodle also. Went there today (Friday lunch- 12:30pm) It was almost a full restaurant with two empty tables; we got seated right away. We received menus within three minutes from sitting down along with our waters. they gave us a good amount of time to look at our menus then ordered. Settings is okay, tables somewhat too close to each other but okay.,clean, good service. The owner & waitresses doesn't really speak well English or understand so you need to really speak up and use your hands & head, body language, lol. They are friendly and eager to help you. They allow you to bring your own drink, wine, beers, but of course no large cooler filled with beers. Quality of food is average. Not a fan of this place... Upon entering, it smells like delicious, authentic Vietnamese food, but I guess I was mistaken. This restaurant was actually very small, and rather dirty. I know it's Hawaii, so humidity is pretty inevitable, especially in Hilo, but they did little to alleviate it. There were a couple of weak fans that did not help with the heat nor the humidity. There were also many bugs crawling and flying around, which was very unappealing to me and my appetite. In terms of food, the spring rolls were VERY dark and oily after deep frying, but the fish sauce made it much better. I also had their beef pho, which had very little noodles compared to most bowls of pho that I have had. Also, their beef was not sliced very thinly and wasn't very tender... I don't know what I would have expected from a Vietnamese restaurant in Hilo, but I was not very satisfied with my food nor the cleanliness there... Had a nice lunch her with my folks. Tried Chicken Pho for the first time and gotta say it's a winner! The chicken was flavorful and soft , not to mention very lean. The broth was also delicious, it was light and tasty and not salty at all. There were other things on the menu that I'd like to try...like the beef stew noodle. I think that's what it's called. Great Pho and Pad-Thai... ok so it's not perfect by any means. The noodles were not the right sized rice noodles and my Pad-Thai that was supposed to be spicy was barely hot, however, you have to consider location and one thing I have learned about Hawaii after living here for three months, the foods not that good. We decided to check out New Saigon since our usual Vietnamese place was closed. Service could be better. We ordered the appetizer and needed a few more minutes to decide on entrees. We ended up having to wait a bit before putting int the rest of our order. The food tasted good, however, the serving sizes for the price was not worth it. We ordered the pho with rare steak and we found maybe 4 slices of steak in his large bowl of pho. My chicken lemongrass order also had a small amount of chicken on a heap of white rice. This was a great little hole in the wall place to eat, and it was open on Sunday unlike a lot of places in Hilo. We both had the Pad Thai and it was delicious. The staff were very nice. One thing is that on the menu under beverages is something called "che tapioca". It's not a beverage, but it is tapioca pudding with a hint of coconut. We don't usually give negative reviews, but we were pretty disappointed. Their Yelp menu said they had vegetarian pho and this was primary reason we came. Sadly, there were no vegetarian items on their actual menu. I do eat a little seafood, so ordered the vermicelli bowl with shrimp. They said the spring roll had pork, but I didn't see any ... and the roll was all chopped up in tiny pieces all over the top of the bowl (even though i said i don't eat meat and would give the roll to my husband). Luckily I'm not an extremely picky vegetarian! The vermicelli was more like spaghetti thickness which was a little different. It tasted okay. There were 3 shrimp. Husband got the fried rice. It was a bit crispy. The coffee was delicious. Our bill was $38 with minimal tip. Only one other person in the restaurant and the only time we saw anyone was when they took our order and delivered our food. We'll probably save our Vietnamsese cravings for 1+1 and Lam's going forward. read more

This restaurant is a gem of an eatery. It has a simple, hole in the wall feel when you enter. It reminds me when I was a little kid going to eat with my family. The food... let me tell you.... Deliciously prepared. I had pho with tendon and had so much tendon it made my belly do the happy dance. We also ordered a beef fried rice to go and that buggah was so so good because it was freshly cooked and hot when it was plated. I believe what made my experience five stars is that upon leaving... I saw the family's little ones sitting on a table in the corner of the restaurant... drawing and practicing their writing on their pads... quietly keeping each other happy while their grandpa works hard greeting, serving, busting the tables. Went here today for a banh mi. I ordered, and sat down while I waited for them to make my sandwich. I could see the woman making it, she wasn't wearing any gloves. Another woman asked me to come to the counter and pay. While I was paying, I asked, "Is the woman making my banh mi wearing gloves?" Immediately, and without looking, the cashier abruptly said "Yes." I said, "Really? Because I can see her and she's not wearing gloves." The cashier ignored me. I normally wouldn't care that much, but I'm pregnant and thus have a weakened immune system. I need to be careful about cross-contamination of listeria, which most healthy people can fight off. So it was really kind of awful of them not to check or care. But even if I weren't pregnant, seriously how hard is it to wear gloves when you're preparing food? In their defense, there was likely a language barrier so maybe she didn't understand my question. And also, just because someone wears gloves doesn't mean they are clean. But don't lie to me and tell me she's wearing gloves when I can see she isn't. So lepo. Stopped in after Onekahakaha beach. My daughter and I were hungry for Pho. I ordered the steak Pho and she ordered the meatball pho; appetizer was the fresh spring rolls. The pho broth was good. We both enjoyed it. The steak strips were thicker than what I am used. I prefer it thinner. Summer rolls were good. You get 3 pieces for $8.50. The peanut sauce was also different than what we are used to. I skipped it and used siracha sauce. For drinks we had lemonade and Vietnamese coffee. Lemonade was very sweet; Vietnamese coffee was perfect! Overall, great pho. Total bill was $38. Restaurant is clean and service was friendly. One of my go-to places here in Hilo. As a local, I visit here quite often because of their delicious food and reasonable pricing. Customer service is OK, it can use some improvement. Sometimes the food takes a while to come out even though it is slow. The charbroiled shrimp plate is my absolute favorite. I really recommend this place and dish. read more

I have sensitivity to MSG which runs in the family. Having said that, Im thrilled to share with you that this is one of the few places where I really enjoyed my food and I had no reaction from the food itself (Plum sauce of course has msg so I try to very little of it). Everything was so fresh, packed with great flavor and my only issue was that my stomach couldnt stretch to accommodate when I wanted to eat more. The struggle was real. It is a small mom and pop shop with one chef wonder who does it all. By the way she is absolutely amazing. I say hello whenever I see her but it is rare because she cooks everything in the kitchen. Yes things can slow down sometimes but oh man, when her food arrives, it is worth every second and drop of my drool (I was hangry...) **OK, the funny shirts (iPho etc) and the hilarious baby do in fact add up to another star, so I'm bumping this review up from 3 stars to 4 stars.** If you're looking for chicken soup in Hilo, this is the best I've had.... ... but of the two dishes we ordered, the other one (chicken with sweet and sour sauce) was not good. It was just a greasy fried boneless thigh sliced up and served with a tiny dish of chili sauce out of a bottle. Almost inedible. BUT, my chicken pho soup was really good, and had nice chunks of white meat chicken in it and a nice accompanying plate of herbs and sprouts. I think that New Saigon has the best pho in Hilo. The broth is rich and flavorful, and the portion is generous. The service is always good. Some of the servers do not speak English well, so some non-verbal communication is good to use. Also tried the sweet & sour fish, but it was only okay. Too sweet for my taste. But when I got take out the other day, they gave me the smallest containers and I was at work and didn't have another bowl to put it into and when I tried to transfer the pho noodles into the broth it spilled everywhere and the noodles were a little over cooked and mushy. read more

I would say some of the best Vietnamese food in Hilo went there twice this past week. Pho is good , broth is tasty. I add lots of chilis in mine. Cold noodles are my favorite, fried rice is also good. Service ain't 5 stars with language barrier and all ,but food makes up for it. Prices are very reasonable for Hilo. read more

The Banh Mi is spot-on, with excellent meat and perfect, crispy bread. The Ph gà (chicken) needs to be cooked with dark meat chicken for better flavor but I'm sure the Americans push for "healthier" white meat chicken. The Ph bò (beef) is pretty good and both come with a respectable plate of herbs to add to them. We were looking for some passable Hawaiian or western food and were so happy to find this place! The owner is very nice also and it is definitely a family atmosphere with a lot of Vietnamese people eating there. I would definitely recommend the Banh Mi gà And also the beef pho.
