Me and my cousin went 1st time. This is not ordinary Chinese food. The orange chicken was white. I've made orange chicken before and it tasted like orange chicken. The only thing to me was good was the 4 shrimps I got. The beef and broccoli was not good. The Chinese pork that was red was ok not the greatest. PLEASE DONT GO THERE! It's not all that good. I recently went to Leung's and it's been a long time since I've visited. It brings back nostalgic memories of growing up. What people need to understand that this is Chinese food with the influences of all the cultural histories of Hawaii. The food was delicious just as I remembered. I honestly enjoyed seeing the owner there sitting and making the wontons and greeting all the customers. I wish they would open later, but I understand our little old Hilo town does close early & it's what gives it a great charm. If you want rice cakes there's phenomenal! I love the roast duck and the roast pork as well! One of the places I would go back to over and over for the "non authentic" Chinese food. read more

Unfortunately, I order Ong choy with harm ha and let me say, while I don't know How to cook Chinese food, I've been eating it all over the island and across pacific and back my whole life. Anyone who knows me, knows I love Chinese food. So I know what I'm Ong choy with harm ha or garlic taste like. Sweet & Sour Pork Fluorescent orange sickening sweet sauce with daikon (?) or cabbage chunks and what appears to be pickle. A few pieces inedible pork jerky rounded out the contents. No pineapple. No vegetables. Absolutely disgusting. Beef & Broccoli A couple of microscopic pieces of beef with broccoli in a tasteless sauce. Based on the sheer amount of food they gave, you can tell that leungs builds its reputation on plates with plenty food. I give them 4 stars for portion size. It's just that the food is not real good. The chicken was freshly cooked, but the actual chicken meat tasted old. Like it had been frozen for a long time. The Kau yuk was just salty and not so good. WHAT HAPPENED??? This place used to be great years ago. Now their food simply isn't the same as before. Not as flavorful or overly salted (probably to hide the blandness). Doesn't feel nor look good for all customers in the line and seated to see someone (especially the owner/manager) preparing raw food right on a customer table out in the open in plain view either. Whenever I come here I have the wor ton mein soup, which is a supersized bowl of noodle soup with vegetables, meat, and won ton. There are multiple items on the menu with similar names, so I usually double-check that I'm ordering the one with noodles, vegetables, meat, and won tons all boiled in yummy broth. There is also a version with "gau gee" instead of "won ton," the only difference is that they are a different shape -- their won ton and gau gee actually have the same ingredients. This is addicting to me. It is a special day when I have the time to eat lunch at Leung's. You can also add this Chinese mustard with a true kick, but the taste elevates the whole thing to another level. (I tend to put the tiniest bit on my chopstick with a whole lot of food and need to wash it down with water, but then again I don't really eat spicy food.) The last time we were here, it seemed like there were a couple of families celebrating graduation from UH-Hilo, which was nice to see. It is a low-key and casual place with good and plentiful food. Seating consists of a couple of booths that can probably seat 6 or 7 people, with a few smaller tables. The building itself is pretty old because it's been there a long time. It is a testament to their good food that this business has been able to survive the ups and downs of economic conditions all these years. Go early. If parking is full, come back another time. Note that they are closed in Sundays. Service can be slow, so go when you have time, especially if it is crowded and especially if you want something like wor ton mein soup that is made once you order. I have never been here for dinner. Someday I will also try their other food, but so far I can't seem to tear myself away from that wor ton mein soup. read more

This is the most disgusting Chinese food in Hilo, I could venture to say in all of Hawai'i. We came as a family, each took one bite then threw it in the trash. The place should be bulldozed for a nice park or parking lot. The cooks should have a restraining order placed on them from coming within 2 miles of a kitchen. Don't know if they purchase these from a vendor, or make it themselves, however, quality control please. Ordered Shrimp chow fun, char sim fried rice and chicken with mushrooms and mixed vegetables. The chow fun was over cooked and mushy. The fried rice didn't have observable char siu and lacked flavor. The chicken with mushrooms and mixed vegetables also lacked flavor and was drowning in overly thickened brownish gravy. This is not the place to go when you are craving Chinese food. read more

I just feel so much more dexterous when I eat with them. That said, the food from Leung's is best eaten any way, just as long as it gets to your mouth. This place is a favorite among locals for good Chinese food. Offering great eats straight from their steam table or by order. Any time I go here, I know that I'm going to eat well. All of their food from the steam table is pretty darn fresh, considering that they're almost constantly having to refill it due to the amount of customers that they get. They also always load up my plate with very generous portions, which I think is a huge plus in their favor. I mean, there's nothing worse than a place that'll charge you an arm and a leg for a rinky dink little amount of food. Either way, that's not something to be concerned about here. I've never really dined in at Leung's, and I think it is supposed to be a primarily take-out place, but they do have a pretty decently sized dining area in the restaurant. Some of my favorite things to get here are their sweet and sour spare ribs and beef and broccoli. With those, ya can't go wrong. I also make a point of getting some good ol' fried rice with all my combination plates. All in all, Leung's is just a really solid local spot to get great Chinese food. I always like eating here, so I do feel inclined to recommend it to anyone else who is looking for some tasty Chinese food here in Hilo. read more

The food here is decent for what you pay for. Never did this place fail me. Eat in or take out, the food is still good. The roast duck and spare ribs are my favorites. Although the spareribs are manini pieces, its ono with the daikon and pineapples added in. When I order a three choice, the spareribs go right on the steamed rice. Another thing this place has is their fresh mini gin dui. You'll have to wait a while for it but its worth the wait. You might want to wait for it to cool down a bit before you bite into it. The parking lot is small. The same way you pull in is the same way you reverse out unless there's room to turn around which is a lot more safer. read more

This is the "old" fashion Chinese Style Food that reminded me of the 1960's. During Covid 19 this is only take out, but the food was delicious. I had the noodles, mixed with onions, and bean sprouts. Then I added Char-su, and Roast Pork with crispy skin. This brings back good memories of yesteryear. They "gave" us a container of Chinese Mustard Sauce, mixed with Soy Sauce. This was made 'in-house". This is one of the BEST Value, for the money. It is very busy during the lunch hour. The crowed parking lot is the only negative to this place. I'm waiting for someone to lead me to a better old fashion Chinese-Kitchen style restaurant on the Big Island. This could be the BEST Chinese Style /Chop Suey restaurant. Don't expect fancy furniture, do expect old ladies sitting down stuffing won-ton skins with their own hands, and a small dish of water. The restrooms are only for the employees. One last suggestion, take your lunch box with a can of soda, to the Queen Liliokalani Gardens. There are plenty of picnic tables outside if it is NOT raining. An enjoyable meal. This isn't ABC but rather authentic evolutions of many old-school Chinese dishes influenced by Hawai'i residents' tastes.
