At first stepping in , we were on a kalbi mission, only had two people, mind you it's about 4:30pm. We were seated and menus given. They have a good selection of eats, Japanese and Korean food! We had the kalbi, bulgogi and spicy pork dishes which included rice, miso soup or salad. I have to admit, as I sampled everyone's order the food was Ono! ( good!) the portion as well was on point, not minini! We enjoyed our meal and the service was great too! I've been eating at this restaurant for many years. I love the Portuguese waitress that works there. She remembers what we like, she smiles, she's pleasant and she works hard. She makes you feel important as a customer and ensures that before she leaves your table that you have everything you need to make it a positive experience. The one thing that is unfortunate is that their prices for their dishes have skyrocketed and they have lessened the amount of food for that increased price. So you're paying more to get less. This may turn a lot of people away from eating here again. Our family have stopped being regulars and only go on "special occasions" now due to the rise in price. My only bone to pick is that if you are gonna increase prices by the amount that you have, give us that amount worth. read more

Super delicious but super expensive 2 plates of kalbi ozen shrimp tempura combo + one soda around $110 with minimum $17 tip.

We are shocked and very disappointed with the terrible service we received the other night. We walked in and were just behind another group of 4 at 7:45pm (closing time posted is 9:00pm). They proceeded to seat that group a couple of minutes after we walked in, but then they unexpectedly told us after seating them that they weren't taking any more tables! We were so caught off guard that we stood there for a few seconds considering if we should order take out instead, but we felt so unwelcome. No explanation. No apology. No offer for takeout instead. We would have been understanding if they were short staffed, needed to close early, or any other explanation. But the way she was so short and unapologetic about it was rude (she may have said "'sorry' we're not taking any more tables", but the tone of it was more like "too bad"- indifferent). As a local family, we used to love this place. It's sad that we will no longer be supporting them after this incident. If you are open til 9, why would you turn away customers at 7:48? We could understand walking in after 8 may be a little late, but seriously to seat that group right ahead of us and then turn us away (no one else was behind us either) is unacceptable. Terrible customer service! We like to support local but disappointingly we won't eat here again. None of us are really the type to even write reviews or complain, but this was egregious and we all agreed a 1star review is deserved. read more

My first dinner here in a few years, and although the portions are big the quality isn't quite the same. I had the combination with yakitori and tempura, and the shrimp was all batter and very tiny shrimp. The yakitori was overcooked and chewy, and my wife's butterfish was too salty. A well established Japanese/korean restaurant in a convenient location. Food here is consistently good and has good, friendly service. Today my wife had the misoyaki fish which she found soft and delicious, which I take her word for since I don't like misoyaki. I had the tempura and Teri beef combo. Tempura was crispy and light and the beef was tender and tasty without a thick gross sauce (the way it should be). Portion sizes are big. My knock is the prices. Wow! At first I was hesitant because of the $30.00 price. Being on a different island I went for it. The taste of the broth was so so. There was three pieces of oxtail. I live on Oʻahu and am here with family for the Labor Day weekend. This was the perfect place for us to dine after a long day of errands. Each of us ordered a combo plate. Mine was Tonkatsu & Chicken Katsu. My other family members had Nitsuke & Beef Teriyaki and Tonkatsu & Yakitori. Our food was very generous and so delicious. Service was very fast and efficient. I came here by chance because many other places were closed from 2-5. I was craving Japanese so I came! I was greeted and sat and given a menu. I was torn between tempura and tonkatsu. I chose tempura and wow was it healthy sized! I had taukemono cabbage slaw Mac salad miso soup and an assortment of tempura. I didn't know it was gonna be so big and thinking Japanese food was gonna be little so I ordered a side Kimchee. When all the food came out I knew I couldn't finish. I had amazing service and had conversation with my server. She said the restaurant is over 40urs old and current owners over 20 years. Growing up on the Big Island my parents brought me to Jimmy's Restaurant when we were in town. After moving off island I would still make a point to eat there when ever I visited. Sadly they closed and my parents suggested this restaurant which I think has been here for many many years as well. Let's start off by saying that establishment is clean and small. Parking is limited but maybe I'm not aware of more parking that is available other than in front of the building. Food was very tasty and portions were very generous. I was a bit disappointed in the service. It could be because I'm used to the friendly service I always got at Jimmy's. Our items came out correct and hot. It just took a while to even get our order in and when asking questions the answers were unclear or given with a little sass. I took a friend to dinner here. we're both foodies and enjoy going out to treat ourselves after a long week of work. I tend to watch YouTube videos about restaurants in Japan and Korea and all there yummy foods, so on a whim I told her we should check this place out since it serves both Japanese and Korean Foods. Service Grade: B+ Like I said the staff was friendly and welcoming, But the time we we're there no one came to refill our empty cups of water, checked to see if we needed anything or ask how things were. And my order took a little longer to arrive then my friends order. BUT I will say the auntie and her coworker were so sweet and the girl who worked the register cracked me up. 3. The Food Grade: A+ OMG THE FOOD!!!...I ordered one of there combination plates which was Tonkatsu ( Pork Fillet that's deep fried in bread crumbs) and Tempura. The plate was BIG! I mean Big and I eat a lot. I almost couldn't finish it, it came with my two choices, a big scoop of rice and vegetable salad. It was soooo good that I forced myself to finish every bit...I wasn't going to waste something so tasty. And my friend had there Bim Bim Bap which came in a huge bowl, though for some reason it didn't have an egg in it. But still she said it was tasty and wasn't crazy spicy like some that she's had before. We we're both very happy campers with our meals. Over All Review: I love it and we're planning to go again to try the rest of the stuff we've read about here on yelp. Can't wait to go again! I've heard and seen this restaurant but never had a chance to check it out until recently (yay, opened on Sundays!). It's located next to a tobacco shop on the main road (Mamalahoa Hwy) before the corner Leung's Chop Suey restaurant of Hilo. Small parking lot out in front. Not too sure if they have additional parking space when it fills up. I got their kimchi fried rice with Korean fried chicken. It came with a delicious miso soup that I loved and salad. The portion was huge! The entire plate was filled with kimchi fried rice and then topped with the Korean fried chicken on one side. The fried rice was alright with some flavor and wasn't too spicy which worked in my friend's favor. The Korean fried chicken was delicious! Crispy with a sweetish tinge. Loved it! It wasn't one of those chickens that was just the skin. My friends also ordered a tofu soondubu and seafood soondubu which were also both delicious with deep flavors. The tofu definitely a kick of spiciness, but it was kind of really oily near the end. The seafood soondubu had no spice (great for the non-spicy lovers!). I also stole some of my friends' kimchi and daikon sides (didn't come with fried rice combo) and these were fermented/salted really well! I wanted to take the entire thing for myself, but they said no saaaad LOL. This place has a variety of food to choose from that ranges from Japanese to Korean to American styled cuisines.
