Selections of bentos in the AM
    Wesley T.

I went to H&K on a Wednesday morning before 10AM after looking through Yelp and selecting H&K for a bento before flying out. There were a selection of bentos sitting on a table in front of the counter but I went to look at the menu first. The lady there told me that the hot kitchen was not open yet so all the could sell me was a bento. So, I selected a Teri beef, chicken katsu and meat jun bento. I regretted my purchaser right away. The Teri beef was the toughest I've ever had, jerky like. I kept dipping it in the katsu sauce to moisten the meat. The Katsu was chicken I think. It was sliced amazingly thin cut so I couldn't tell if it was chicken or pork. It was also dry and tough, worst I've ever had. I did like the meat jun and the daikon pickles. Really doubt that I would return.

Ono bentos and great prices! They open early too so you can stop by to grab something for work or potlucks. My favorite is their beef Kim bap but you can't go wrong with whatever you get here.

Korean food style bento boxes that were picked up. The amount of rice to banchan ratio was decent. The food tasted like what it's supposed to taste like. Nothing too crazy, which is great if you need a simple lunch. The meat was dry, thin, and hard to tear, but the fish battered in egg was delish. Will come back if I don't feel like packing lunch for work.

When I was a kid, my lunch boxes were mundane every day same ole', same ole... Nowadays, I've grown up from stale lunch boxes to flavorful bento boxes and one of my favorites is at H & K Lunch Shop. H & K doesn't have any indoor or outdoor seating but don't be fooled by this little kitchen because it serves out some big plates with some big smiles. The prices are fair, and their bento boxes are packed with delicious bites of comfort food flavors. The atmosphere is always cheerful and the staff is friendly. During the lunch hour rush, you'll see people coming in and out all day with smiles. Personally, it's my go-to place when I need a hearty ono lunch. 감사합니다 Gamsahabnida.

Tiny Korean hole in wall that sells lunch plates but were sold out by the time I went. They had a few different bentos so I picked up two. Each were 9.50. However they were kinda skimpy on the rice and there wasn't too much flavor in any of the proteins in either bento. They were nice and maybe their other items are better but I was a little disappointed

If you (and/or your SO) are hangry, I do not believe this will alleviate your problem... This is in a little lot area off of Kinoole and Lanikaula St. Parking is somewhat limited but it doesn't get too bad. From the moment I got in line, I felt quite rushed. Hearing the customers before made me nervous because the lady at the counter was asking questions fast and moving around fast with this rushed attitude. So service is fast, but certainly not pleasant. We ordered the bentos - one was Mochiko Chicken & Chicken Katsu and the other was Spicy Pork & Meat Jun. Mochiko Chicken was actually pretty tasty. Chicken katsu was alright. Spicy pork, just a little fatty, and not too spicy. Meat Jun was okay. Also ordered the side of kimchi, was watery and not at all good. Highly DO NOT recommend! Okay but after we ate, WE WERE STILL HUNGRY. Yeah, the portions in my pictures give you an idea of how, um, little we were given. Prices , well, not justified to their portions. You can easily go elsewhere for a heartier bento for a cheaper price. Taste? Okay, maybe like 3/5. Service? 1/5: *snap Price? 2/5: I was hungry Go back? Maybe...if someone else is working... Just wanted to update this review: OWNERS SUBJECT TO PUT SIGNS UP SAYING "NO CUSTOM BENTOS". Not sure if this is because we ordered 3 custom bentos LOLOL but we saw this sign a little after we came here and I thought "WOW!". I guess these businesses can do whatever they want, huh!

Service is friendly and relatively fast considering they have just a couple of kind ladies working there. Bingsu is amazing and rivals some of the bingsu we had in South Korea! We tried the strawberry bingsu which was loaded with sweet, jammy strawberries, colorful mochi pieces, condensed milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a crunchy topping. One bingsu is enough for two people to share after a meal, though it's so yummy that you might be tempted to order two! We tried their spicy squid (not pictured) as well. So good with lots of squid in a delicious semi spicy sauce. Comes with rice and a few banchan. A little pricy to be honest at $20 for a small plate. The taste makes it worth the price though. Overall, Haneul Cafe is one of my top choices for Korean food in Hilo. The bingsu is the bomb! Looking forward to trying the other bingsu flavors like injeolmi, mango, and matcha. Will be a return customer for sure.

Our high school club chose to eat here to support a local business for our end-of-year celebration,…read morebut the experience was unfortunately very stressful for our students and staff. We spent two and a half months planning this event. My club treasurer and I confirmed the price on seven different occasions--five times over the phone and twice in person. Each time, we were quoted just over $600 with about a $110 in tips, which we paid in full two days before the party. However, the day before the event, we were told there was a miscalculation and we needed to pay another $400. Because our students had only fundraised the amount we were originally quoted, we had to remove two people from our party and downgrade our menu which did not include drinks anymore. We requested to bring our own drinks due to the last-minute budget change, but we were told we could "only bring alcohol and no outside sodas and juices." It was disappointing that this was the only accommodation offered to a group of high school students. During the party, we also encountered several cleanliness issues. We found hair in the food and cockroaches in the rice, as well as on the walls and near the buffet area. I am totally not joking about the food; I was shocked by what we saw. The servers were very polite and apologized when we let them know, but it was a major concern for us. I understand that accidents happen, but this was a very difficult situation for our club after so much careful planning. Personally, I will not be eating here again for a long time.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.
