This is the worst Chinese Restaurant that I have been to this year. I had the sizzling seafood plate with "gravy " . The scallops were cut up into triangles. The seafood came out of a plastic bag that was frozen. The Hong Kong noodles were cut into rectangular pieces. I guess they don't know about the "bad luck" that follows a Chinese chef that cut the noodles. We also had the roast pork with the skins fried. Hmmm. Delicious. The chili oil was dry, and you had to mix it at your table. No chili oil jars. The chow mein was ordinary. Price for 3 people was $ 83.14 without tip. We went when it was close to the end of the lunch hour. We were wondering why they weren't bringing out freshly cooked food. When we inquired, they responded that it was the end so they weren't cooking anymore. We were disappointed with their answer and felt we got leftovers. We felt that they should have mentioned that it's the end of the lunch hour and we had to eat whatever food was left in the trays. In that way, we could decide whether we would eat there or not as the lunch price is not that cheap anymore. We have not been back since. read more

What a disappointment. I've been going here for the noodles for years and would have given New China a good review back then, but I think they recently changed management & cook so my last meal was disappointing at best. The service was definitely new people, and the woman who took my take-out order pretty much said so. She was friendly but confused about my order - all very simple dishes that we've ordered many times: fired rice, chow fun, spring rolls. This was our go-to place for this stuff. The chow fun had so much soy sauce or other dark sauce that it was practically black & extremely oily. The spring rolls were under done inside (yuk) and also too greasy. And the fried rice - which is the measure of any Chinese restaurant - was bland and used the wrong kind of rice. For the last 15 years this place may have rated a 3 in general and a 4 for the noodle dishes. Sad to say it now rates only 2 stars in my book and I have to look elsewhere for good noodles. read more

The buffet is eatable many bland food items, so so not too much taste to the food! The egg plant was kind of spoil when I tasted it. The mafu tofu had no extraordinary taste. The shrimp salt and pepper were over cooked and dry. Rice was not hot and one entry were chicken nuggets. Taste served not hot just mix with water. Come on get real. Small selection of buffet items. And for me, I've always had a cardinal rule regarding Asian food, especially Chinese and Thai food, if it isn't dark and full of flavor, then it's not good to go. I ordered 2 orders to go, one shrimp and one Korean Chicken. I made it very clear that I didn't want crispy chicken. When I got home with my orders, the Korean Chicken was crispy chicken marinated. I called the girl back, and she said that's how Korean Chicken looks. I've eaten in dozens of Korean Chicken restaurants across Hawaii and the Korean Chicken never looks like this. Korean Chicken is filet of chicken grilled with no batter. I asked if I could exchange it for something other than chicken, the rude girl refused. Girl was carrying her baby the entire time I was there. She left me on the phone for a loooong time while she asked the manager, but maybe she had to change the babies diapers. Place felt more like daycare than Chinese restaurant. The manager is probably her husband or brother, because what business let's you carry around your baby while at work. They refused to let me exchange my food for something else, and it's $20 a plate. So I paid $20 for a plate of white rice, and crispy battered chicken that I won't eat. I've driven by this Chinese restaurant my times and the lights are off, and no cars in the parking lot, but the sign shows open. The place looks out of business to me, so today I stopped, because my Korean girlfriend wanted Korean Chicken. I tried explaining that I used to live in Oahu and have eaten at a dozen Korean restaurants, and never seen Korean Chicken looking like this, but before I could finish, the rude girl hung up the phone in my face. Went to do a pick up . Had me a combination plate #16 . Called it in - took 15 mins. Received food nice & hot . Plate included Crispy chicken , Spare ribs , Steam pork ( Kau Yuk) & vegetables for $18.95 I chose Fried rice ( xtra $1 charge ) Tho' vegetable was considered 4 pcs of wonbok cabbage ( sm. Cuts) and chicken could've been a bit more crispier also fried rice was more white rice w/ a slight consistency of sticky rice . But all in all I'd say the food was tasty & good . And I enjoyed it . Service was nice considering had only one person serving & taking orders . She was very courteous . Place looks very nice and clean if you wanted to dine in . Not a very busy place tho' , only had 2 tables occupied with family of 4 - 6 people . Looks like a great place to have family or friends for dinner and have great conversations or catching up with eachother 's lives in this busy world . Ambiance was nice and bright so you won't fall asleep as soon as your tummy is stuffed . Sorry ! I forgot to take a pic of my plate before digging in ! Food was really good- best chinese food that we've found so far. They have a lunch buffet that was very budget friendly. Lots of selections. I usually order singapore rice noodles and it's perfectly cooked- just the right amount of curry and spices while not oily. My kids love their wonton mein and dumplings. My husband loves their chicken chow fun- the noodles were soft and perfectly cooked with a slightly sweet sauce. The staff and owners are super friendly. We've been here at least 5 times and their food is always consistently delicious. read more

I have eaten the buffet here twice. For dinner it's $13.95. They have fried rice, sweet and sour spareribs, korean style fried chicken, black bean eggplant, fried wontons, cold ginger chicken, jin dui, chicken nuggets, fried crispy pork belly, crispy salt and pepper shrimp, and even more I can't remember. This is the only buffet at this price where you can get fried shrimp and crispy pork belly. Both these items easily sell for $15+ a pound anywhere else. Worth every penny. read more

Mom 'n popping it in Hilo! We were visiting with Cousin Jane & her hubby, Masa. Jane asked if there was something in particular we'd like to eat. Came down Hilo side for the afternoon and decided to eat here for lunch. The Lunch buffet price was good. (11am to 2pm for $12.95) The choices were kinda limited, but it was good enough. We particularly liked the shrimp, mixed veggies, and katsu chicken. You could also order from a menu if you didn't like the buffet choices. The waitresses were really nice, we easily made friends with them. Overall review of this place, I give it 3/5 stars for the good service, and the food was OK. read more

New China Restaurant has the best (maybe only?) Chinese buffet in Hilo! The buffet is very reasonable - $9.95 per person for lunch and $11.50 per person for dinner. There are about 12-15 different dishes on the buffet line at once. The dishes are a variety of things - beef, pork, chicken, vegetable, rice, noodles - so there is something for everybody. I really enjoyed the beef broccoli, string beans, and korean chicken. What surprised me was that in the midst of all this Chinese food they served chicken nuggets! It was funny, but the nuggets were actually really good! There are also a few sauces to choose from to dip your food in (oyster, orange, sweet sour, hoisin, hot mustard). Parking or finding a seat has never been an issue for me. Most of the restaurant is made up of large glass windows so you get a nice 180 degree view of the road outside. read more

Review #5 for 2018. This review is for the lunch buffet. People can say whatever they want; I enjoy New China Restaurant! The lunch buffet is only $14, and you get a variety of local Chinese dishes, including lemon/sweet sour chicken, spare ribs, salt and pepper shrimp, ginger chicken, eggplant, bak choy, and lots of other good stuff. Oh, and I'm always stoked for the chicken nuggets! One of my friends basically just ate a bunch of fried rice, crispy chicken, and chicken nuggets (he's 14). Yes, you could go to another restaurant to get better Chinese food, but it will cost more, and you won't get as much. You could also spend less somewhere else, but it won't be a buffet. Probably the only other place in Hilo that you can eat at a buffet for a similar price is at Pizza Hut, and I prefer New China over Pizza Hut. Service is good as the workers are always very nice! If you go there often, they remember you. There's decent parking in a private lot, or you have to park on a nearby side street. read more

Used to regularly frequent New China Restaurant years ago when the Tang's owned it and they were consistently superb at the old Mun Cheung Lau location (who BTW was my absolute fave in American Chinese greasy oily late night plates even with the rumors of rats and roaches scurrying about till the Tang's took over and cleaned it all up). Fast forward few years later they moved to the old Wendy's location and changed to new Filipino owners. Tried their food several times and it just wasn't the same as the original Tang's (which I felt was a step up in quality Chinese American food compared to other local Chinese restaurants). I was invited to eat out with family at New China and the food was mediocre but at least that time it was not as stale or old left out or reheated tasting as many other Chinese restaurants in Hilo. By choice, I don't frequent here because one their food is mediocre at best and Leung's and Lings are typically better tasting (BUT ONLY) when they are on the ball and have their on game days but not on their bad off days when their food are kinda sucky and barfy like how Sunlight Express and the old Chen's in the mall before they closed. Cheng's on the other hand (Ling's sibling) would rank up with these other two and maybe even higher if not for the rip off owner cashier charging more than their menu prices upon checkout blatantly ripping her customers off. Secondly (AND MOST IMPORTANTLY) the prior owners (husband and wife team - the Tang's) of New China I ran into had informed me that they were ripped off by their formerly trusted Filipino employee who made a hostile takeover and stole their business right from under them. Essentially got the business for free literally stole it away from the hard working Tang's. They recognized me because I used to be one of their regulars. It's hard to understand their accent but they got their message across. I can only speculate that it was like in the movie Rocky 5 (I think) where the trusted employee was given power of attorney while the Tang's were out if the country on vacation while the restaurant remained open in the hands of their employees and the business (New China Restaurant) ownership was signed over without the Tangs' knowledge until they returned from their trip only to find out they no longer owned their restaurant which their own blood sweat and tears built from the ground up. I highly doubt people know the real truth about the unjust takeover regarding this particular restaurant. If everyone knew the truth I think this place would have already closed down due to lack of customers. The Tangs' then opened the former New Star Restaurant (back at the old Mun Cheung Lau location) for a couple of years before they decided to just quit. I think most of their customers (who don't know the real story) were already stolen away by the Filipino New China owner. read more

Had the lunch buffet - they charge $11.95 for the lunch buffet, and $12.95 for the dinner buffet. I really don't know why this place is getting five stars from the other reviewers. Maybe it was that good back then? I don't think it is now. They had steamed and fried rice, noodles, egg rolls, fried wontons, fried shrimp, and about 6-8 different dishes. Sounds good, right? The simple problem was that everything I tried was cold. And it's not like I was there right at the very end of the lunch cycle. I got there at around 12:45, and each and every single thing was cold. No, not "cold" as in "just not quite as piping hot as I'd like" but "cold" like there was no discernible heat within the rice, egg rolls, broccoli beef, etc. It's as if they didn't even have the buffet plugged in. And I dug down to the bottom of the dishes to get some warmer, fresher tasting food (standard buffet trick). Nope - didn't matter. Still just as cold. I'd go elsewhere to eat next time. Reading the reviews, perhaps we were there on an off night. It wasn't good; the noodle dish my wife got was at best OK, and my duck was the worst I've ever had. Chinese restaurants 'always' have tasty duck, but... I love eating duck in Chinese restaurants. But I sure didn't love the tasteless dry boring duck New China served. My wife's order was alright, but like the more bla food Chinese fast food places serve cafeteria style. Food tasted old and chicken was hard. Cabbage was slimy and parts of it was black as if it were old. They do not have children prices so I paid for 3 buffets when 2 being children who barely ate so basically almost $50 for myself basically. I used to love it here. It's not the same. Very disappointed in this restaurant. I tried to order mapo tofu , which is a famous Chinese dish. It was for takeout and the lady on the phone told me it was just a tofu dish. I asked her three times if it's just tofu and blackbean sauce and she said yes. Went to pick up my order brought it home and open it up and found out there was only three pieces of tofu and the rest was vegetables ,very very disappointed. Lady on the phone lied to me and her version of whatever she gave me was disgusting. Also I ordered a string bean with garlic sauce dish. What did I get maybe six green beans and the rest was broccoli I paid $10.95 for the stupid dish. Don't waste your time at this place they will lie to you and make the wrong dish. Ate their buffet Friday night and didn't enjoy my food at all. The ginger chicken was spoiled (you could smell the sour at the steam tables) and a little mushy, I couldn't even eat it. I only took it cause I thought the smell came from something else. The fried rice was hard and dry and everything else was just overall unappetizing. I think the food was leftover from lunch.
