New Panda - Shrimp W. Vegetable - Chinese Near Me - Ephrata, Pennsylvania

There's about 3 or 4 different Chinese take out places around in Ephrata. Personally, I always order from Jade House because 1) it's good and 2) it's under 10 mins away from my residence. I decided to try New Panda because it's also under 10 mins away, possibly even 5 mins. I ordered bourbon chicken (was very shocked and curious because normally take out places don't sell this as it takes a while to make and can't be saved usually), plain lo mein, steamed dumplings, and an oshinko roll. I got a mix of different things because I feel these are just staple foods that if a place gets these wrong then I can't imagine their other food would taste good either. Bourbon chicken: reminded me of General Tso chicken except with the bourbon chicken flavor. Not exactly like what you'd get at like the mall in a food court but pretty good. Flavor was there, chicken was tender. I enjoyed this, except it cost about $11.45 probably because like I mentioned above it's one of those specialty items where they can't really save it if it doesn't sell and it takes a while to make. Steamed Dumplings: These were delicious, the dipping sauce was good too. I was able to even eat these plain and no sauce. The meat on the inside was flavorful and tender. Well done. Oshinko Roll: this is one of my favorite vegetarian rolls and it has pickled radish inside. Loved this and I always enjoy eating the pickled ginger. This one was great. Lo Mein: I feel like every Chinese place whether it's a restaurant like PF Chang's, a sit-down like Tony Wangs, a food court stand like China Express in Park City mall or a takeout like New Panda everywhere makes it differently. I ordered plain Lo Mein to eat with my bourbon chicken because that's my ultimate favorite combination and it was very good. I still prefer the one from the mall (I'm not sure why, I think it's just maybe the texture) but this one was good. Some places make their lo Mein more saucy/dark or fried more. I prefer it to not be as dark colored and to be soft noodles like they did here. Service: I did an online order instead of a normal phone call in and I also had it delivered. I live within 2 miles from the place so I didn't get hit with a delivery fee. However I found it weird that it took exactly an hour and 15 mins to get my food to and from me. I called after it had been an hour because it said it would be here between 50-60 mins after submitting my order. Apparently it was already on the run. Within a few mins my order did arrive. Just know that despite the distance it will probably take an hour to get to you. Online ordering is awesome though, the delivery lady just dropped the food off on my porch when she arrived and had 0 contact because I had paid online. I like this method a lot. Overall I did enjoy this place and will consider it when I'm on my Chinese food craving again. I don't eat Chinese food that often because I'm watching my sodium in take but I will say that this place did make me want to come back and order more. read more

Success is all about the management of expectations. First things first, New Panda (and Flea Market) is pretty much a take-out place. I wouldn't plan on going there for a romantic dinner in the corner booth. There is no corner booth and the owner's kids pretty much monopolized one of the three tables - none of which matched. There are a couple of makeshift counters across the front wall of the establishment on which are piled a random assortment of stuff and things with hand-written prices al la Green Dragon. That being said, take-out it is. Menu = Typical Chinese restaurant. Shrimp, chicken, beef, and pork prepared about 100 ways, depending on which sauce is called for. Ingredients = Fresh in what we ordered. Preparation = Very good, efficient and quick. Portions = Very generous (my wife's comment as we left with our take-out order in hand was, "If we're gonna go by weight, we did alright!" Two combination dinners at $8 and change per combo = two meals apiece for the two of us. Our two take-out meals were close to an exercise in surprise grocery shopping! With careful planning, I'm pretty sure we could eat for a week for around $60, give or take. That is to say, less than we could buy the ingredients and make the meals ourselves. Which brings us to - Value = Excellent. Ambiance = Meh. All things considered, we'll go back again and order take-out again from New Panda in Ephrata. read more

Most of the time we don't have a problem with the food but only with the customer service. When we called for delivery, the lady on the other line was already giving us attitude and making it obvious that she was annoyed for no reason. I only asked her to repeat herself again because I didn't understand her the first time. When she did, she impolitely yelled louder. We expect better customer service. Really disappointed- I read the reviews for Chinese in the surrounding area-& felt pretty confident when choosing this place for takeout. If you are used to Asian food closer to metro areas-this will disappoint you as well. Out of all that we ordered-the miso soup was least disappointing. The lo mein was mostly noodles! Very little meat, veggies, etc. all noodles had a weird taste to them-almost like they should have been boiled more before tossing them in the oil. In New Panda's defense, they are a Chinese not Japanese restaurant. Still, sushi is on the menu so they have an obligation to know how to serve edible sushi. My sister and I got a cucumber and an avacado roll which were normal. We both also ordered a volcano roll which was absolutely disgusting and completely unedible. I have no idea exactly how they created the fiasco but it appeared like they took soggy fried shrimp, avacado, and caviar (you could see tiny bits of all these ingredients) and blended them into a grainy, mash potatoe-like consistency. They then stuffed this into the rice and seaweed, rolled it up, and topped each piece with a dallop of the same weird mixture. Inedible. They have great workers but I must say the food for us was undercooked, the cucumber roll rice was made with too much vinegar and the dumplings has too much oil and it cooked for too long and it burnt. Iv had Chinese and japanese food in ny, nj and pa and must say I tried food from here 3 times and have decided to not eat her again. I appreciate them giving me my money back on the uncooked chicken which I did bring to them and show them it was still very pink inside but I won't be coming back sadly. read more

Food would be better if the Gener Tso chicken and sesame chicken were not so so hard and dry on the insides. I understand they have to premake but for the meat to be that hard means they've kept the food too long in bad conditions. The reason the taste is decent is to cover up the hard dry chicken in my opinion. Almost every chinese restuarant does this now. I'm a big fan of generals tso but I find I have to go to Maynor buffet cause they have the best and freshest General Tso. Everywhere else is a bust. read more

I usually love their food but in the past few months it has changed. I almost always get General Tso's combo platter because it was fresh chunks of white meat chicken. Now it's seems like it was fried before and there is lots of fried chicken skin along with it. The crab rangoon also has less filling. If things improve, I will give a better review. I grew up in Brooklyn,NY and had my favorite Chinatown restaurants, (as most New Yorkers do), so I know the difference between good American-Chinese food and the not - so -much variety. Up until last summer I would have rated this take-out restaurant a solid 4 stars. The food was always up to my expectations. Then the quality took a nose dive. The fried chicken breast with vegetables became little chunks of generic fried chicken (like general tso's) in sauce. Even the egg drop soup lost it's flavor. There was obvious cost cutting, noticeable when I had to argue for soup noodles to accompany my order. I guess I'll keep looking for a decent take-out place, or travel to Tony Wang's. read more
