With a buffet-type restaurant, there's typically not much "table service," but the server was tentative and promptly cleared any plates. They refilled beverages and asked if we needed anything! I get to Luby's at 11 AM on Saturdays, right when the old folks show up. Walkers parked out front…read morelike Cadillacs at a car show, everybody knows everybody, and the line moves with the quiet efficiency of people who have been doing this since before I was born. I fit right in. My grandfather was a Methodist minister, which meant on weekends he belonged to the Lord and during the week he belonged to Methodist conferences all over East Texas. Catching a meal out with my grandparents was my fun as a kid, and Luby's was the crown jewel. Forty years later, almost nothing has changed -- and I mean that as the highest praise a cafeteria can get. The order never varies: crispy fried fish with those little kits of tartar sauce, Texas toast, fried okra, corn or whatever crunchy vegetable is holding the line that day. The desserts taste homemade, and I'm not asking questions. The attendants in the dining room have always been nice -- I think they hire for kindness and train for everything else. The one thing that has changed in four decades is when you pay. Forty years ago you ate first and paid on your way out like a civilized person. Now you pay before you sit down, like the cafeteria has trust issues. I get it. Times change. Food has always been good. My only gripe, then and now: the silverware is not always as clean as your grandmother's would be at Sunday dinner. Inspect before you commit -- that's free advice. Always great memories. I'll be the one in line at 11.

The food was excellent during my very recent trip. The "sad salads" referred to by someone else - during my visit were quite fresh and inviting. I ate one of my all time faves - carrot raisin which was both fresh and delish! I purchased Almondine fish as an entree and got mac n cheese and fried okra for sides and shared a piece of Chess Pie with my wife for dessert. I also had a piece of Mexican cornbread. My wife ate beef liver (hold the onions) and green beans and Mac n cheese with a roll. My son got a kids plate of chicken fingers and sweet potato casserole with Mac n cheese. My daughter got a veggie plate with green beans, Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and brown gravy - with a roll for both kids and a jello for both. Before tip - we enjoyed all this for $33! What a steal for fantastic food - and on Saturday afternoon too - it was about 330pm when we ate - so possibly it was a discounted time for the meal, I'm not sure - I know some restaurants offer lesser prices in the afternoon (after lunch and before dinner). Everything was not only as good as I recalled from my last visit (and let's face it - I've been eating at Luby's for my older than 55 year old life and the food was great at this visit too! I'm an older dude raising two littles who are equally as impressed with the food here as I am (actually requesting to eat here at ages 10 and under). So there's that! We are thankful there is still a Luby's here as they keep disappearing - but we enjoyed this one just fine today and I'd bet you will too! The service was excellent - my drink stayed full and they cleared the table every step of the meal.
