( https://www.instagram.com/p/DQF8Gzekcks/ ). It is a shame because, besides myself, I know a few people that aren't in the neighborhood that travel regularly to G&L. Also its surprising because every time I go the place is pretty packed and occasionally there is a wait. What's also a shame, for me, is that on my recent visit my friend ordered the Steamed Seafood in Lemongrass and this is perhaps the top, or one of the top dishes on the menu. The seafood flavors and balances the slightly spicy lemongrass broth making this a crave worthy bowl. I ordered something out of my wheelhouse - the Coconut Spicy Lemongrass Soup, which on online order menu states its a popular dish. I couldn't see why this dish is so popular because I find other items on the menu superior. They make a tasty pho (especially when paired with a marrow bone). Their sandwiches are well made - I enjoy the different fish ones. I think their Vietnamese coffee could use some work - it is blander than other versions I had tried. Don't be too sad and maybe feel a little optimistic because owner Petra Rickman has a great track record opening interesting, in demand restaurants (This one and Taco Azul have been longtime go-tos in Whitestone). Additionally G&L has a 2nd location with the same menu in Manhattan, which unfortunately for a Queens boy like myself is a bridge too far and a congestion pricing too high for me to make the trek.

The complimentary bread was served with a very creative trio of spreads: butter, a sweet plum sauce, and a sweet vinegar reduction. It was an unexpected and delicious start to the meal. The sushi rolls were the highlight. The fish tasted great, the avocado was generous, and the ingredients were well balanced. We also really enjoyed the Mito Ribs, Tuna Tartare, Black Sea Bass, Teriyaki Chicken, Mito Fried Rice, and Cobb Salad. The ribs were rich and flavorful, while the tuna tartare was refreshing and beautifully presented. The sea bass had nicely crisped skin with thick, tender meat. Overall, Mito offered a lovely atmosphere, attractive presentation, and a wide variety of enjoyable dishes. It was a great choice for our birthday celebration, and I would gladly return for the sushi and several of their signature dishes.

This place is massive and beautiful, with high ceilings and tons of space. Getting there, however,…read morewas a whole different story. Bay Terrace was under construction, traffic was a mess, and after circling around twice for about 20 minutes, we finally had to call the restaurant to figure out where the entrance and parking area were. Our host/server was polite, friendly, and professional. I didn't necessarily feel much warmth from him, but he did his job well, so no complaints there. We came for Restaurant Week, and they had a pretty extensive menu for $25 per person, which is a great deal. Unfortunately, while most of the food was well cooked, I felt like many of the issues came down to questionable decisions made by the kitchen rather than the ingredients or execution itself. The most obvious example was the chocolate lava cake. It was clearly overcooked, so instead of making a new one, they flipped it upside down and served it that way. I'm guessing they thought no one would notice, but it was pretty obvious. Why not just remake it? The ribs were another questionable decision. The menu listed a "half rack," but when it came out, there were only two ribs. We asked our server about it, and he checked with the kitchen, who explained that their full rack is normally four pieces. If I ordered a full rack from the regular dinner menu and four ribs showed up, I'd be pretty upset. My sister decided not to keep the "half rack" and opted for the grilled octopus instead after seeing it come out looking so good. Unfortunately, since it was added later, it seemed like the kitchen rushed it out, and the octopus didn't have much of a char. The grilled black sea bass was actually one of the better dishes. It was perfectly cooked with beautifully crispy skin. The only disappointment was the sauce. The tomato tartare sauce served with the black sea bass tasted almost exactly like the romesco sauce that came with the grilled octopus. With such an extensive menu, I found it odd that the two sauces tasted so similar. It made the dishes feel a little repetitive. My sister's Scottish salmon was also pretty good. The cauliflower sauce arrived cold, and when we asked about it, our server told us it was supposed to be served at room temperature. It clearly wasn't, but the sauce was delicious, so we let it go. The bigger issue was that the kitchen poured it directly over the crispy salmon skin, turning what should have been a nice crispy skin into something soggy. Again, a questionable decision that took away from an otherwise good dish. I ordered the wild mushroom tagliatelle, and honestly, I don't know what came over me ordering pasta at a Japanese restaurant. The menu says the pasta is homemade, so I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but to me, it didn't taste like fresh homemade pasta. That said, I should have asked about it before ordering, so that part is on me. The bigger issue was that the dish itself was just OK. Nothing particularly memorable, and the portion was surprisingly small considering it was one of the cheaper lunch options. I finished with the crème brûlée, which was perfectly fine. It's hard to go too wrong with crème brûlée, but then they added a little whipped cream and one frozen blueberry on top. I'm still confused by the blueberry. If you don't have fresh blueberries, just leave it off. Yet another unnecessary kitchen decision. Overall, the meal wasn't bad, and there were definitely some good dishes. The service was pretty good, the Restaurant Week price is a great value, and the space is beautiful. My biggest issue was that so many of the little things seemed to come down to questionable decisions made by the kitchen. Overcooking the lava cake and flipping it over instead of remaking it, putting sauce over crispy salmon skin, rushing the octopus, using sauces that tasted nearly identical on different dishes, and adding a frozen blueberry to the crème brûlée all felt unnecessary. None of these things individually would ruin a meal, but when you start adding them up, they become noticeable. I'd give them another chance because the meal wasn't bad and there is definitely potential, but I'd hope the kitchen pays a little more attention to the details next time.

ONE STOP SHOP FOODIES …read more... Everything about this place is amazing. We are including the food / Drinks which I'm assuming this is why people go correct!? +++ The service is beyond upscale, including food fresh always and ambience amazing , I don't know how many Hibachi , Sushi , Cajun seafood, restaurants everyone else has been so any negative reviews can be put on here if Ikko didn't match we're actually beat the ones you attended !? This is a one stop shop think about it !? No more arguing on what does somebody feel like eating ? Sadly actually nobody is realizing acknowledging and appreciating the accommodations of this restaurant. Please review on what they don't have to offer on their menu!? The staff is amazing they will cater to you and the only reason you may ever get an attitude is because you were giving one to them remember that! Or unless they're extremely busy, But you should be understanding at that point. The ambience is beautiful. As said prior , what more do you want from an establishment. Remember this is a one stop shop as again priorly said you can't go wrong ! Great job the Owner, Managers , Chef plus all kitchen staff , and definitely the hospitality of the Waiters. - This is a real review - Vojka & Walter ‍

Started off with a Tsingtao (Chinese Beer) smooth and refreshing, a solid choice with hibachi. There was a bit of a wait for the chef to come out, but once he did, it was totally worth it. He struck the perfect balance--entertaining without overdoing it. We ordered the steak, scallops, lobster, and shrimp, and everything came out cooked perfectly. Portions were generous enough that we even had leftovers to take home for the next day, which is always a plus. I really liked the light-up hibachi tables, a nice modern touch. The restaurant wasn't crowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable, and the service throughout was good. Overall, the place looks great, the food was on point, and the vibe was just right. We'll definitely be back.
