When we walked in, we were sat immediately and our drink order was taken. They brought the drinks but didn't say anything else. We sat for a while before realizing we should probably just go up to the buffet lol. We weren't sure how it worked. The food was great! They had plenty of choices. A ton of fresh fruit that tasted so juicy and delicious. They checked the temp of the food regularly so everything was really fresh. It looks pretty clean inside. The staff was really nice! The food is overall very good, and usually cooked fresh for the most part. The employees are very kind and come around often. You don't have to wait long for your drinks to be filled, or old plates to be taken away. The space is often clean and has music playing. I have dined here three times with family on a Sunday this year of 2024, even though I only checked in on Yelp once. ( Too busy eating) My Niece and her family live in Almont which is close for them to dine here on a weekly basis. So after watching my great nephew play basketball in Almont or Imlay City down the road everyone was hungry at 3pm which was the perfect time and not too busy at New China Buffet. I live an hour away, in SE Oakland County. I used to visit the huge buffet near Star Southfield and the one at 13 Mile and Ryan before they closed. I also like Fuji and the buffet near Walmart at Van Dyke and 14 Mile. I'm used to huge restaurants with massive spreads, so I'm a bit spoiled. This one is quite small with 2 buffet tables. However, it was considerably cheaper and they still managed to have all of my favorite Chinese buffet offerings in a more condensed setting. This one gets good marks for offering QUALITY over quantity, and being a better value financially. I paid $80 for 4 people. The other buffets are $60-75 for only 2 people. The place was super clean and the staff was nice and explained how it's a buffet. Honestly the buffet was better than most Chinese places I try; dine in or carry out. It's very hard to find a decent Chinese place but I will make the drive to imlay city every time. Best tasting food I've had they even have the little rice balls with red bean paste which is my favorite. The food was in smaller portions out on the buffet which I think makes it much better cause they stock it faster too. There was never a time any food was missing. BEWARE OF POP SCAM! I wanted to give this establishment a higher rating, but I don't like feeling manipulated or tricked. They sat my family down and the waitress immediately came to our table asking us how old are kids were and what we would like to drink. When we got the bill we were charged $10 for the 4 drinks and the waitress very much made it feel like these were included in the cost of the buffet. To me, they should make it more known that drinks are not included. The freaking pop machine is right next to the buffet so it feels like you should be serving yourself. It's not that $10 is going to break me, it's just this evening out cost us $85 for 2 adults and two kids. The food was OK. Variety was nice. Food was not too warm. Atmosphere was also ok. This has been my favorite restaurant for years now. It has the freshest meals around. They have such a good patronage that the food is constantly being refreshed. Out of at least 100 times that I have taken people there, I have never had one issue. In fact, I am heading there right now. I live really close to this place, and I visited it a couple times a week when I first moved here. Here are a couple of PROs and CONs in my opinion. PRO: Food is good. Nothing in the buffet appears like its been sitting out all day. PRO: You have an infinite amount of food immediately available. Literally start eating within seconds of entering. More PROs: Open until 10:00 pm, staff is nice (although reserved as seems to be common in Chinese restaurants), and place is clean. CON: Food could be warmer. Its not cold, but not what you'd get from a dinner order. CON: If you're eating late, they start stacking chairs at 9:45 and sometimes even 9:30 - so you feel rushed to finish. CON: Selection is limited. Basically due to space. They could use a couple hundred more square feet. A-OK is a perfectly good rating IMHO. read more

So... This was, and hopefully, will be again, a great Chinese style food buffet. Don't understand why they will not serve buffet again, as I've been to other ones in this state that have started serving buffet again. Tawas, Alpena, many others are already serving buffet style. As much as I just love these folks, being a diabetic, I can't order their take out dinners. Way to much rice, egg rolls, Spring rolls and other things I really just can't eat. However, if I were able to serve myself from the buffet, I could easily stay within my diatery guidelines. So... I may be back. BUT. No, unless you can start serving buffet again. My husband and I have passed this restaurant on several occasions so we figured we should try it. The buffet is kind of small but they have all the dishes we like. My faves were the wonton soup, lo main, General tso's, crab rangoons, mushroom chicken and the green beans. Yum!!! The food was surprisingly hot and I saw the kitchen bring out fresh dishes on several occasions. You cannot beat the price! $8.99. You can barely get one meal at a Chinese restaurant for that! This is a smallish buffet, but don't let that deter you! They more than make up for it with freshness and flavor. Since Covid there has not been a buffet and carry out was all that was available for some time, however, ordering from the menu is great as well. I love their "Hot and Sour" soup and the shrimp egg rolls are excellent as are all of their side dishes! (I usually get a small side of sweet and sour sauce to go with the egg rolls rather than just using the packages of plum sauce, it's much better). My ex used to bring me here all the time -- she was obsessed with the place. I'm sure she would give it 5 stars. Very average to me, but still an enjoyable place to eat from time to time. Pretty good variety and the food has always been hot... people sometimes complain the food has been cold for them but I've never experienced that problem here. Popular with large families the owner has a lot of repeat customers. There are few negatives really. The food can be salty at times, What you think is cream is just icing in the desserts and the scruffy waitresses have a crap attitude if you ask them to do something out of the ordinary.
