Actually, I stumbled on this restaurant because the hours on the other restaurants in downtown Bemidji were not open till 4pm or 5pm. And New China was open at 3pm perhaps even the hours were 11am-8??! I think. For $10.49 I ordered House Special Lo Mein and Kevin out front was nice, he expressed that the chow mein is not the soft noodle kind and he showed me what Lo Mein looked like and I really like that because he did not want me to order the wrong noodles which I totally appreciated. My meal was awesome, he even had chili oil and when I asked for chopsticks, he had some handy. Not at the front though, but you can certainly ask for some. The place is not entirely fancy and it's casual but I sat at the restaurant and for a Tuesday, it wasn't super packed but a couple of folks waited for their food to go. The egg roll was actually really good than most places I've ordered from. Lots of free parking out front and surrounding areas in downtown. It's a quaint small but lovely and friendly town. No complaints here. I almost devoured my food due to a long day! I don't live in the area but appreciate New China for cooking delicious Chinese food. So good I saved for the next day for dinner. Food wasn't bad, food wasn't great. Service was decent, quick, efficient but really not overly friendly. Quantity was considerable, but that didn't make up for the real lack of flavor. I called the manager he refused to correct the mistake, he said he would make the correct order but I had to pay for it and keep the wrong order, when I refused he said how about I talked to the employee who screwed up your order, will that be okay? the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced, will never enter that establishment again. Very average at best. I have had Chinese take-out from multiple cities around the country, this is not memorable, and I've ordered multiple times. The fried rice that comes with most meals is mushy and doesn't taste fresh. In my opinion, the Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet in town has better take-out. read more

In the spirit of 2021! It's so fun to support small businesses who treat their employees well. I was visiting Bemidji this week, so we decided to stop in on old friends at New China. They wouldn't let me pay (I used to work there ‍) so I put $20 in the tip jar. The boss noticed, fished a $20 from the till and made me take it back! Haha I guess we won't be allowed to financially support our favorite local business Anyway if you've never been there try it out! Portion sizes are huge (an $8 dinner special usually feeds two...) General Tzo's and the Sweet&Sour chicken are most popular, but my personal fav is definitely the Singapore noodles. (They have the best Singapore Mei Fun in the nation! Just the right spice and flavor:) The hot&sour soup is great, also the cream cheese wontons are amazing too. I was born and raised in New York so you could say I am probably as close to an expert as it gets here in Bemidji. The first place I tried was Super Buffet and it was absolutely sub-standard chinese food. Aka GROSS! New China is the closest re-creation of the New York style take-out I have had in Minnesota. I have eaten there five times in the past two months, getting something different each time, and it has always served very fresh and very delicious authentic takeout. Best Chinese food anywhere. New China Spoiled me with their flavorful dishes. I have not found another Chinese place that even compares to what you get here. The restaurant itself is nothing to look at: big window, faded sign and 12 tables in the place but has the greatest food. They have an open kitchen so you can watch the food being prepared. Their portions are large and filled with flavor. The wait staff are the owners and their extended family. I was originally headed to the restauarant next door that closed shortly before I arrived. I asked someone going out with take-out, and she said it was good, and I had no other options nearby. An adorable little girl took my order, must of been the daughter to the parents cooking just behind the counter. She told me the General Tso chicken is a popular dish, so I got that, rice came with it, and I also had an egg roll. More food than I could eat, even though I tip the scales at over 490 lbs. The chicken had a lot of batter, not strictly the prime pieces, but nothing that I had to quietly discard in my napkin. If you've ever been to NYC and had Chinese take out, this is basically that. If that is what you are expecting, you will be fine. If you are looking for the fancy, sit down, Chinese and sushi bar with a bottle of saki, this isn't it. The food is pretty consistent on that note. This was the worst Chinese food I have eaten. We spent $50 on a meal for our family. A young little girl took our order and gave us some food advice. She suggested General Tso Chicken and said that it will be spicy which I really wanted. We also ordered cheese whontons and two orders of lo main noodles. My husband and I ordered the general tsos chicken and shrimp lo Mein. The lo mein was super salty and the chicken was super hard. The fried rice was awful to-it tasted way over cooked! I hate wasting food so I still ate it and I now am confident I have food poisoning. I've been throwing up all night and had to call out of work this morning. I will never order food from there again. the sign is faded, the interior is simple and plain, but if sustenance is what you're looking for, you've found the place. the portions are massive in comparison to what you pay. the quality is comparable to a typical "pick-up and go" chinese fare you would find in nyc. if you're looking to raise your blood pressure, just add some soy sauce to the general tsao's chicken combination and you're well on your way to the hospital. read more
