Up front; all my reviews are based on my expectation going in. I don't expect a wrap from the grocery store to be high tea with the Queen, and I rate accordingly. That said ... New Buffet City is my go-to for dinner when I am in Portsmouth for work overnight. they recently were closed for renovation and came out of it well. I have dined here more than 5 times and the food is always fresh and they are mindful of crowd size. the buffet is not over heated on slow weekdays, so the food is not overcooked. The hibachi bar (I call Mongolian barbecue) has many options and is always prepared perfectly right in front of you. I have enjoyed the taste of everything in the buffet. I stopped short of 5-stars because I think they could afford to have a bit more variety of the chilled food - salads, fruit and desert - and several visits it seemed like the soups were cook down. I am a fan and will continue to visit as it is completely worth the $15.

At $16.99 per adult you would think that the food quality was at least that of the Chinese food court place at Chesapeake Square Mall, but unfortunately it's not. We were seated under a very questionable air vent with what looked like black mold surrounding it. I wish I would have seen what the bathrooms looked like. Took a quick look around to see what we were getting into and some options looked promising for the price but it was just mediocre. The guest I was with mentioned that the chicken they had was either cold or very dry which makes sense considering it's under lamps for probably hours at a time. Overall, they really need to clean up, the vents looked like they hadn't cleaned them since the place opened. They also need to have more dessert options than dry sponge cake covered in pudding. Please save your time and your $16.99 with tip (although you aren't served) and take it to the food court :)

This was some of the worst food I've ever had in my life. I ate a bite of every single thing at this restaurant and I didn't like any of it. Everything either no taste at all or had a super weird and off-putting taste that I didn't expect when I bit into it. The Texas toast was flavorless as were the spring rolls. The cream cheese rangoons were so stuffed with cheese that it was way too overwhelmingly sweet. All of the meat tasted like it'd been cooked in a pan that had never been washed, and nothing was seasoned. I mean nothing. I was still hungry when I left, because I was so disgusted that I couldn't even stand to eat enough to satiate me.

No sushi available. Half the food old. The service was terrible. The food just being old should have been enough. Just terrible.

Came here with a friend of mine who absolutely loves hot pot. I had actually never had it before,…read moreso I had zero idea what I was in for. But honestly, it turned out to be such a fun and tasty experience! For anyone who hasn't tried it: hot pot is basically a big simmering pot of soup right at your table where you cook all your own food. You pick all your ingredients from soup, veggies, meats, noodles, mushrooms, whatever you want and drop them into the hot broth to cook. It's super customizable and kind of like a mix between soup and DIY cooking right at the table, which is actually a blast once you get the hang of it. We both went with a hot, spicy soup base which was perfect for warming up on a cold day. I threw in broccoli, mushrooms, ribeye, and noodles. The best part is watching everything cook right in front of you and then pulling it out when it's just right. The broth soaks up all those flavors and gets even richer as you go. The flavors were amazing! Really bold and satisfying. The spicy broth was exactly what I needed, and everything we added came out perfectly cooked and delicious. It was warm and cozy, which made the whole thing even better since it felt like the ultimate cold weather meal. I look forward to retuning and trying something completely different!

Clearing the table of our empty plates could have been more attentive, although it improved about halfway through the meal. The sauce bar was clearly labeled with dozens of options. There are many different broths available, plenty of proteins, though I would have preferred leaner cuts of beef. Don't miss the included cold appetizer options and deserts. I thought that someone had spilled fish sauce in the men's room but I found that the issue was that the urinal didn't flush. I'll pass on the fish sauce next visit!

I love how well they treated Mak Mariano, and his friends, and also those that came to see and hang out with him. The staff were very kind to allow us all to hang out and take pictures. I tried out the caldereta and the mechado (?). I liked both items but I found it too oily for my liking. The vegetables were stewed perfectly and the meat texture were nice and tender. I think had I visited earlier in the day, it may have had a less oily texture to it. The accompanying soup was super sour but acted as a perfect palate cleanser after the oily meals. The service was excellent-- friendly, patient, and helpful. You can pick and choose different entrees over rice or pancit. Similar to getting food from Panda Express. The inside of the restaurant has several family friendly seatings available and baked goods and market also. Lastly, parking is free and plentiful right across from the front entrance. If an out of area Filipino asked for a good place to eat, I wouldn't hesitate recommending them. I certainly wouldn't mind revisiting again in the future.

Yes, the prices have gone up -- but honestly, what hasn't these days? More importantly, the quality of the food and the overall presentation have risen right along with them. Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of All You Can Eat sushi restaurants. I tend to subscribe to the old adage: "You get what you pay for." Too often, AYCE sushi focuses on quantity at the expense of freshness and execution. Fortunately, Sakura seems to have moved well beyond that stereotype. I started the meal with Miso Soup and Seaweed Salad. Both were fresh and flavorful. The miso soup was particularly enjoyable, with a generous amount of tofu, but not so much that it overwhelmed the broth. Everything felt balanced and thoughtfully prepared. The seaweed salad was good as well, refreshing and lightly dressed without being overly sweet. Next came an order of Beef Short Rib. The meat arrived piping hot, thinly sliced with the bone attached, alongside a simple dipping sauce that complemented the beef rather than masking it. After letting it cool slightly, I found it tender, savory, and very satisfying. Trying to eat at least pseudo healthy, I opted for sashimi instead of traditional sushi rolls and ordered Tuna, Salmon, Snapper, and Yellowtail. Everything tasted fresh and clean, exactly what you hope for when ordering raw fish. I also ordered the Tuna Tataki, which was nicely prepared and packed with flavor. One of the highlights of the evening was the Greenbrier Roll, made with spicy snapper and topped with spicy crab and avocado. The presentation was beautiful, and the combination of flavors and textures worked exceptionally well together. And finally, I finished the evening with an order of Fried Ice Cream... partly because it sounded good, and partly so I could brag to my granddaughter about it later. Overall, I had a genuinely enjoyable experience at Sakura Sushi. It's refreshing to see a restaurant improve in both quality and consistency, and based on this visit, I'm already looking forward to returning again.
