Unfortunately, this was one of the nastiest restaurants my husband and I have ever been to. The entire restaurant looked extremely dirty, from the grime and scum on the floors to the visibly dirty walls. There were exposed mop buckets and cleaning buckets sitting out, and the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. What really did it for me was the buffet itself. Some of the serving utensil handles were literally sitting down inside the food, meaning you had to reach into the food area just to grab the handle. There were also flies around the food, which completely killed my appetite. The service was basically nonexistent. We barely saw our waitress the entire time we were there. My husband and I each had ONE plate, stayed for maybe 20 minutes maximum, and left because we were so uncomfortable with the cleanliness of the restaurant. This place seriously needs to be deep cleaned from top to bottom, gutted, remodeled, and sanitized. I genuinely could not believe food was being served in those conditions. 10/10 DO NOT recommend. read more

I gave this place a few tries over the years and it's just not good. Not only do they have employees that stare at and stalk you as you eat, but they also have the absolute WORST BBQ Rib I've ever tasted in my life! It was cold, mushy, and tasted like they had soaked it in bleach and dirty dish water. I've also seen the video footage of roaches crawling all over the plates. The selection was crappy and most of the food was hard, crusty, inedible, and just plain nasty. They used to get dinged on their health reports (back when those were available for the public to see) because they used to allegedly trap birds that flew in through an opening in their roof, and cook them. Could just be a stereotypical accusation, but after all that I've seen from this place?.. I wouldn't doubt it. read more

Strictly Management Review is very very very extremely poorly ran, but food is decent though which goes for the two stars. However to be yelled at for just wanting to help the establishment by taking pictures of the food and to give a none biased take on everything.. but to be given such a disrespectful remark and shut down was highly appalling. It is clear to me why this place has gone down and why the reviews have been extremely low... it all starts at the top. It's also very sad because this was the place we always had birthdays, events, went to almost every day after church, etc. so much so that the owners, had they seen my family and I, they would've known us. Mind you had I just whipped out my phone and took pictures, it wouldn't be a problem, but since I had a camera... all of a sudden there's a "it's a management thing.." issue. Being a videographer, active duty military, and photographer, I had been to many establishments and have not been this disrespected ever. Up front; all my reviews are based on my expectation going in. I don't expect a wrap from the grocery store to be high tea with the Queen, and I rate accordingly. That said ... New Buffet City is my go-to for dinner when I am in Portsmouth for work overnight. they recently were closed for renovation and came out of it well. I have dined here more than 5 times and the food is always fresh and they are mindful of crowd size. the buffet is not over heated on slow weekdays, so the food is not overcooked. The hibachi bar (I call Mongolian barbecue) has many options and is always prepared perfectly right in front of you. I have enjoyed the taste of everything in the buffet. I stopped short of 5-stars because I think they could afford to have a bit more variety of the chilled food - salads, fruit and desert - and several visits it seemed like the soups were cook down. I am a fan and will continue to visit as it is completely worth the $15. read more

At $16.99 per adult you would think that the food quality was at least that of the Chinese food court place at Chesapeake Square Mall, but unfortunately it's not. We were seated under a very questionable air vent with what looked like black mold surrounding it. I wish I would have seen what the bathrooms looked like. Took a quick look around to see what we were getting into and some options looked promising for the price but it was just mediocre. The guest I was with mentioned that the chicken they had was either cold or very dry which makes sense considering it's under lamps for probably hours at a time. Overall, they really need to clean up, the vents looked like they hadn't cleaned them since the place opened. They also need to have more dessert options than dry sponge cake covered in pudding. This was some of the worst food I've ever had in my life. I ate a bite of every single thing at this restaurant and I didn't like any of it. Everything either no taste at all or had a super weird and off-putting taste that I didn't expect when I bit into it. The Texas toast was flavorless as were the spring rolls. The cream cheese rangoons were so stuffed with cheese that it was way too overwhelmingly sweet. All of the meat tasted like it'd been cooked in a pan that had never been washed, and nothing was seasoned. I mean nothing. I love love love this place! I think I eat here, well order to go at least once a week. The hibachi is my everything! The cook at this station has job security. I have been visiting this location at least for a solid year and he has been the only one manning this station. And he does an awesome job! I visit so much... he now speaks and confirms the count of hibachi orders. He even asks if I need anything that I don't see on the hibachi station. A matter of fact... I need to visit today! Well a few weeks ago, I did try out the Buffet... so not a fan. Well my style of eating... no bueno! Now don't judge my opinion of the buffet because this Sunday afternoon at 1pm, the restaurant was full of patrons... backs bent, forks up and down, smiles and laughter filled the restaurant. This restaurant has received several "Best of" honors... so they are winning. I am giving the hibachi station all 5 stars!!!! Maybe because I have a great rapport with the staff... they show me much love... but still the food made fresh ... overall so worthy of 5 stars! The parking in front of the restaurant is limited because this restaurant is located in a busy shopping area. Shops nearby include: The Bounce House, Gabes, Big Lots, Dollar Tree, A hair salon and many more. As a result, more than likely you will have to walk a little ways before reaching this restaurant. Went for dinner at 530pm. Quality has severely gone down hill. Selection of buffet items have decreased but yet the price has increased. No ice cream. No sushi. Mongolian item selection poor. Only jalapeño, cabbage broccoli Onion, noodles, bean sprouts and 3 meats. Used have celery, green onions, and carrots. $15 for sub par food is a waste. I think the health inspector needs to pay them a visit. Ceiling tiles completely water drenched looking like their going to fall down. AC vents covered in mold. Overall cleanliness poor. Came here on a slow Sunday afternoon, a friend raved about this place and we couldn't decide what to eat so we gave it a try. Our servers were very helpful, the selection was limited but not soo much where it made an impact. Overall we had a little bit of everything except their ice cream area's (closed due to covid). As a family (parents also) we seem to go here more often than I'd expect. I'm fairly certain it's all because it's quick and close. Also as anyone with a two year old will tell you, we're just happy she's eating. The food here is a hit or miss at times. Once you find a staple of something you like, you may want to tread carefully when venturing off. I am the type that likes to try new things and have often been penalized with tasting things I don't like after eating here. One of the things that bugs me is that sometimes the floors are slippery. I don't know why, but that bugs me a lot. It just speaks volumes to me about the cleanliness of the facility as a whole. Overall, it fills me up, I don't get sick and it's quick. This is probably my 10th time coming to this buffet in the past ten years...but the 1st time since their renovation. I normally only eat from the Mongolian grill, but I thought I would live dangerously and go for the buffet. I made two trips and the big thing that stood out was the food temperature. On the 1st go around the temperature of the food was a bit warmer than room temp (mind you, I came during peak lunch time). The second go around, the temps were better, but not as hot as I would prefer (or should be). PROS: -large selection -not overly dominated with seafood -plenty of soups -Mongolian grill always good -waitress was attentive -nice atmosphere -clean CONS: -food temps to low. -salad bar is skimpy -Buffett not so kid friendly if they are not big Chinese eaters. -$ a little high for lunch. This place is one of the more expensive Chinese buffets I've been to in the area. It's 11.99, not bad for all you can eat but many are under 10 bucks for dinner prices. The service is always great here. I've been here dozens of times with family and every single time the service is awesome. The food? Hit or miss for the most part. A lot of things were a bit dried out. The fried chicken wings were TINY. I almost don't think it came from chickens.. it looked like they were probably Cornish hen wings which is odd. The egg rolls were dried out. The soup was good, noodles were good, chicken and broc good. I like that the Mongolian grill has a lot of options.. and you can make your plate, leave it and make a buffet plate. The guy will cook your food and cover it up when it's done for you to pick up. I'm back in VA visiting my family. We all decided to go out to Buffet City to get some ways. Chinese was the food of choice for dinner! Upon entry you are happily greeted by the hostess and quickly seated. To your left is the main counter with all the usual Chinese decorum and to your right is a large fish fountain. The setting is quite spacious. Plenty of seating from front to rear. I have heard this restaurant is known to be busy, but tonight was a bit slow. The selection of food is vast as well. If you fancy Mongolian BBQ, then you got that here! My grunts about this restaurant are: The selection of food is great but not all items are fresh...a bit dry when ready to eat (chicken wings, pork egg rolls, fried shrimp) The music I want to assume is native tongue and quite upbeat. Maybe there could be music that's more mellow and translated so we could know what the song is about b/c one waitress we asked didn't know what the song was/about.
