My family just went to Nesso for dinner. This restaurant is part of the Cunningham restaurant group and we've always had good meals at any of their restaurant, but tonight, unfortunately, the food was subpar. My daughter and I both had pasta dishes and the pasta for both dishes was sticky and lacked flavor. My son-in-law had the steak and my wife had the scallops, and both of those were fine. The service was good and the restaurant looked nice. But for an Italian restaurant to have bad pasta is disappointing. Not loud since there aren't that many tables, and nothing is rushed. My friend and I decided to check this place out for Devour Indy. I had the Octopus, Scallop, and Panna Cotta, and my friend had the Caesar Salad, Linguini Nero, and Tiramisu. The food was definitely different than what we expected, but we loved it. The caesar salad had an actual anchovy lol the scallops were good, but the black rice risotto beneath it was too salty for my taste (drank so much water afterwards). I wanted to love it but it was a little underwhelming. The aperol spritz was amazing; highly recommend. The mushroom bambolino wasn't very balanced. The fried-ness was very overpowering that you could barely taste the delicate mushroom flavor. If you intentionally used the cream on the bottom you could taste more than just fried food. I had the scallops and risotto, and unfortunately for being an Italian place the risotto was not cooked well. It was hard and left a film on your teeth. It needed to be cooked longer. The scallops were cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. We also got the linguini Nero and it had a great flavor but mostly pasta and not much protein. I was shocked when our bill was over $120 for what we got. I don't know that I'd go back, but I'm glad I tried it. We got a little lost parking for Nesso because we don't come downtown often because of complicated parking. Happy accident though, we had to go through the Alexander Hotel which Nesso is attached to. A+ for the Alexander Hotel from just what I saw. Now onto Nesso. We are early diners so our reservation was for 5 PM but if I could give any advice on Nesso, go for a twilight or evening dinner. I'd bet it even more gorgeous at that time. We were lucky enough to be sat at a roomy settee table near the windows. Extremely comfortable and I had a view of the gigantic bird artwork (which is probably more gorgeous in the evening since you'd be able to see the lighting better). The whole restaurant feels very Sex in the City for me. Everything is elegant and curated for a beautiful meal. Our waiter was Jay and he was excellent. DH picked off of the regular menu while I picked from the Devour Menu. Jay helped me with the dessert. I chose the Mediterranean salad, Cacio E Pepe, and the Panna Cotta. The salad was delicious. Light and crispy with a symphony of summer flavors. The Cacio E Pepe was a blanket of velvet cheese and fresh cracked pepper over a perfectly done pasta. The Panna Cotta was a light and smooth pillow of soft strawberry, lemon, and rhubarb flavors. DH had the Chicken Milanese and the meatballs. The chicken was perfectly cooked, piping hot, and crispy. Typically I'd call myself a Cunningham Stan. I must say I was let down by this one. I waited to post this to marinade on my experience and not jump too quickly to judge. I will start by saying I will be going back to try something different items, and this speaks to the affordability of this restaurant. I started with the beef carpaccio and a bottle of wine(Thursday is half priced wine bottles). Of carpaccios I've tried this was probably bottom 10%. I can't place exactly what was missing but didn't live up to my expectations. I ordered the Orecchiette, something I usually wouldn't try, and my mother ordered the Spinach Pappardelle. I wish I could give them more stars because our experience last night was wonderful. Our server was Maria and we loved her. My fiancé is a quick sell with any suggestion, so she was able to talk him into the wine pairing as well as starting off with a glass of something bubbly. He had a prosecco while I had the brut rose, which were both delicious. We came for devour and had already decided what we would eat. I opted out of the wine pairing but after tasting his, I am certain I missed out. The wines paired with each of his courses were incredible! He had the octopus, short rib ragu, and the pistachio gelato, while I had the beet salad, salmon, and tiramisu. Everything was delicious and beautifully executed. I've had some good and some bad octopus. This one was amazing. I was nervous about the beet salad because goat cheese can be a little too pungent for my taste, but not this one. It's the season for birthday dinners! We recently visited Nesso and were placed in a private type room. I had started following their Instagram and planning my order. Upon arrival, I was torn. Of course, right? Upon entry, it has such a romantic vibe. What better way to spend Valentine's weekend with beautiful friends. I have never tried octopus before and this was exceptional. The white bean puree and pepperonis compliment the meaty grilled octopus. Olives give it a salty addition and the crisp yellow potato medallions are a perfect vehicle to mop up the white bean purée on the plate. I wish there was more on the plate! First let me state that I am not one to eat pasta. I don't enjoy the pasta bloat that comes with the heaviness of most dishes I steer clear of pasta most of the time. The agnolotti, however, was the highlight of the night. Agnolotti is like a ravioli however the shape differs. This version is served with a black truffle oil sets off the silky soft mushroom cream stuffed pasta with sautéd mushrooms sprinkled through the dish. It's been a staple on the menu and I can definitely see why. (I am already thinking about it and how I can eat it again.) Misses for us where the cauliflower appetizer and the short ribs. The Parmesan crusted cheese cauliflower was a bit greasy for our tastes. The crunch of the cheese and pine nuts are a nice balance to the soft cauliflower but it wasn't memorable compared to the octopus and agnolotti. Next the short ribs were overcooked. While they did fall apart, some pieces were tough and unflavored. It was served with something green, I believe but after a bite from my husband I didn't want another. read more

A quiet, comfortable and romantic setting with modern but comfortable decor located in the hip Alexander Hotel in the City Way development of Downtown Indianapolis. They have a great aperitif and wine menu. Their manager is always so helpful with any wine questions you may have. They have several different atmospheres for dining. The host was very friendly and sat us in a spot that was in a corner but was perfect for me and my girlfriend as we like a little privacy even going out on dates. We had a 7pm reservation, the restaurant was not even 1/2 full, but our party of 4 was seated at a high top in the bar area. Our waitress was also one of the bartenders. It took about 15-20 minutes to place our drink orders . Drinks came out, but our waitress didn't bring them, so we were stuck, waiting for her so we could order appetizers. We waited and waited, it took about 45 minutes and then we were able to order appetizers... So we went ahead and ordered our meals at the same time because we were hungry and it was late. The appetizers came out fairly promptly. But food didn't come out until 8:30 PM. We ordered some bread to come out with our meals, since we were ordering mostly pasta. No bread came. Then the waitress finally came over. Asked how our food was and we reminded her we ordered the bread. She said she would go back and check, but she went back to the bar and never left the bar again. Eventually, we saw her ask a busser to go to the back and get Bread for us. We were almost done eating at that point. We waited and waited and waited again for the check. We did not leave there until 9:30 PM. Most of that time was spent waiting for our waitress. She was the bartender, but they were not busy (even though it was a Saturday night) and she spent most of the time talking to the other bartender. We spent just under $100 a person for mediocre food and terrible service. I will say that their focaccia bread was very good. I definitely will not be back when visiting Indy. read more

Okay, where to start... Let's start at the front door. The greeting was outstanding as we entered, and it proved to be a harbinger of the excellent service we received throughout our visit, especially from our server Joshua Okay, that's where the two stars come from, sadly... I had the meatballs appetizer and Cacio e pepe. The meatballs looked pale under the very strange lighting that tended to make everyone's skin look ruddy, so, it's hard to say what color the tomato sauce was. The meatballs were extremely soft, actually a bit off puttingly soft, but, they tasted okay, seeming to be made with the traditional beef, pork, and veal. The pasta dish was very inconsistent and unappealing. Some of the spaghetti was properly cooked and some was too firm. It wasn't sufficiently cheesy as this dish should be and there was barely a hint of black pepper. My wife had the pork tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto. The pork was tender, succulent and perfectly cooked, however the prosciutto added a chewy dried out unnecessary wrapper that ended up left on her plate. Wow!! Nesso Italian Kitchen sets the bar. The moment you walk in you will notice the upscale design and feel the laid-back atmosphere. Shortly after arriving, we were greeted by two friendly hostesses. They found our reservation quickly, and one of them escorted us to our table. Our server introduced himself and shared with us what sets Nesso apart from other dining establishments in the city, including how their meats and vegetables are locally sourced from farms in Indiana. He highlighted some of his favorite dishes and gave a detailed description of each one. The menu features seafood, meats, vegetables, fresh pasta, and other inspirational plates by the Nesso culinary team. There is also a wide variety of starters, desserts and beverages. We decided to order the Meatballs (Pomodoro and Pecorino Romano) and Burrata (Cherry Tomato, Candied Onion, Salsa Verde and Semolina Sourdough) while deciding on our entrées. The plates were wonderfully presented, and the food was delicious and mouthwatering. The Meatballs were cooked perfectly, and the Cherry Tomatoes in the Burrata gave a burst of flavor that put the entire dish over the edge. To date, the Burrata is one of my favorite starters I've tried at an Italian restaurant. Next up, my wife chose the Chicken Saltimbocca (Prosciutto, Sage, Spinach, Butter Sauce, Artichoke and Mozzarella) - she loved it! The chicken was juicy and fresh, and pared perfectly with the ingredients provided. I chose the Pork Loin (Marsala, Mushroom, Onion and Squash) - one word: AMAZING! The meat was tender and packed with rich flavor. I'm not a big fan of mushrooms, but these were sautéed to perfection; they tasted wonderful! The squash added a fresh kick to the dish which I appreciated. The Pork Loin is a must try! Having gone two for two (starters and entrées), we elected to share a dessert and ordered the Chocolate Budino Terrine (Chocolate Fudge Cake, Butterscotch Budino and Chocolate Mousse). Again, SCORE! WOW. We changed our reservation from 8 to 15 people at the last minute and then proceeded to be the most high maintenance group ever. Our waiter, Miles, was an absolute superhero. The recommended style is to order appetizers, then salad, then pasta, then protein family style and Italian style so we did and I really liked that. We tried almost everything (party of six). We started with the octopus (great) and burrata (great) and we added bread to the burrata which was a great call from our waiter. The octopus was grilled well and tender and tasty. My youngest even liked it. We tried all three salads - arugula (meh), beet (great), Caesar (great). Then the pastas came and we did the spaghetti and meatball (great sauce, fine meatball), sausage rigatoni(meh), and pesto pasta (great, to my surprise). Then we had the NY strip (great, perfect medium rare, great flavor), the salmon (great, perfectly cooked medium), and pork chop (good, perfect cook for me a little under for our other eaters). We were too stuffed for desert. We ordered a very nice wine, a Brunello and it was very good but I'd say the wines are very over priced, a bit obnoxiously actually. My wife got a lemon cello spritz which she loved. So why only four stars? Expectations are big for this price range and we had some great food but nothing was amazing that stood out for us where we said we have to come back for this. But the food was probably 4.5 star worthy overall. More importantly, our waiter was great and very personable and very helpful but......the meal took forever. Nesso reminds me of a good marriage between Campania and Tuscany if those two will even get married. Don't expect your typical Italian-American here ...there's tons of places around Indy to get that. But at Nesso, what they have are solid regional dishes from Italy albeit a bit upscale with presentation and more local ingredients. For starters, the octopus is similar to what I had in the Amalfi region and their recommended pairing was a white wine from Sardinia. For main entrees, my husband had short rib ragu. The dish is quite literally the same ragu that we had in Napoli but Nesso had fancier pasta. My husband's wine pairing was a good table wine from Tuscany. My salmon was cooked perfectly and I had a white wine pairing from the Campania region. The tiramisu was paired with a really good vinsanto wine.
