Tried the Neon Cactus in Fairview for the first time last night. It was busy due to homecomings, rehearsal dinners, and milestone birthday parties. Since we hadn't made a reservation we snagged two seats at the bar, and I was exceedingly pleased. The bartender, Terry, was amazing. Quick, efficient, quick to supply recommendations, and welcomed the challenge of going off script a little to satisfy a customers tastes. He made me two of the best Old Fashions I've had in a long time, not smoked like the ones on the menu. And for my husband who has trouble finding cocktails he likes he made a Blonde Headed Slut (Terry's version of a Redheaded Slut) absolutely delicious. We hadn't made a bowl of queso before hike we waited for our tacos. The tortillas are made in-house and the tacos were yummy. I had the El Mandarin, The Big Dipper, and the Carne-Vore (front to back on my pic). The El Mandarin was my favorite followed by the Big Dipper. This will definitely become a new go to place for us. read more

The Big Dipper Birria tacos were delicious- the sangria was nice and the service was quick and friendly. The bar was easy to hang out at, music and a very cool vibe made this a great stop before my last appointment of the day. This spot was a great find! read more

Huge restaurant with more than enough room to host a large party. Playful decor and a perfectly curated menu makes this place a must try. Give yourself some time to drive around the surrounding neighborhoods before, the mansions are insane. Our server DJ was top tier. So good we're coming back again tonight to ask for him and we're bringing friends. We also left our credit card, to be fair. Lol. But excited to return nonetheless and had sent it out to friends even before leaving last night. The fajitas came with Queso in the pan, which had my hubby and I racing to see who could get more. I tried this place for the first time today. We are very disappointed in the organization of the front of the house. The tables had dirty dishes in the dining room. The staff seemed overwhelmed and disorganized and the place was not even busy. Our waiter never brought us one of our ordered items from the starter menu. The food took forever to come out and the waiter was apologizing for the delay. Our food was cold by the time we got it and it's way too expensive a restaurant for them to be so unorganized. When they charge $62.00 for a pound of fajitas they could at least serve them warm. The food was ok, not worth the hassle of a horrible restaurant operation. The ambitious menu is not matched by the execution or the staff quality. I am never going back and advise anyone not to go. read more

I have to start off this restaurant is super cute and fun atmosphere. I would go back just for drinks maybe. They go over the top with presentation. Even a chicken quesadilla was on a special cake platter. The margaritas are good. More slushy like. Great size and price! We tried the guacamole and queso and honestly I wouldn't recommend either. The queso has a super buttery flavor and quite pricy. Then the guacamole has a very strange after taste. Never had anything like it and guacamole is mostly standard at places. Do not go here. We met friends for drinks and dinner on Friday January 9th @ 4:00 pm- The waitress was instantly rude to us. She ignored us and when we finally got her attention, she asked 3 of us what we wanted to drink and totally ignored the fourth person. She served the 3 drinks then left the bar, returned and again never asked the 4th person what they wanted. I saw her leave for the day around 4:15 so I guess her mind was getting off work and not taking care of customers. We will NEVER be back. read more

The decor and energy of Neon Cactus is bright, comfortable and cozy. The service is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Four stars because while the chips and tacos were good, the vegetables tamale was bland. We also had to ask for water when the tables around us received it without asking. Neon Cactus was great! For a restaurant to be able to accommodate my family is a huge plus...we loved the private room, DJ and Ashley took great care of us! This was our first time here, we started out with drinks - the Texas Two-Step was definitely a favorite at the table. I would say the Chicken Tinga Flautas were a hit, the bed of black beans they sat on top of, they were delicious. Another great choice was the queso blanco w/ beef cheek. It came out piping hot and fresh. Choosing the Taco Platter (three tacos) was great. The birria taco was perfection, I also heard the Torta was great as well. What a great spot!!! Friends told us to stop in because they just knew we'd love it. Well, let their "I told you so" dance begin!! We were greeted by a kind hostess, then seated - we chose a booth inside instead of the patio since it was on the humid side outdoors. The restaurant is beautiful, it feels upscale yet comfortable and welcoming. Our server was Danyelle - she was so kind and polite, and took the absolute best care of us!! We ordered drinks - a frozen Sunrise Margarita for me, and a Paloma for the husband. Both drinks were as delicious as they were artistic and beautiful. We had chips and three salsas - my favorite was a molcajete style tomato and peppers salsa, his was the green avocado salsa, but we both loved the third spicy salsa as well. True test is always queso....fantastic!! Served in a piping hot molcajete sitting on a trivet, the queso was soooooo good. I'll have to get it EVERY time. Husband ordered Carne Asada tacos, I had the appetizer Chicken Tinga Flautas. Both were so flavorful and had beautiful presentation. (Side note: I can't eat a lot at one time, so I took home my leftover flautas, queso and salsas - chopped it all up and mixed together for a delightful casserole!) Throughout our stay, multiple people came to check on us, ask our thoughts on things, and really make sure our experience was the best. It was. They are doing a lot of really good things in this restaurant for their employees, from their hiring practices, to coaching both how to work in the industry and how important customer service is, to why it's important to know how the dishes taste and should look and be served. Also, this place has one of the coolest and most lovely Ladies Rooms I've been in!! Fairview/Allen is lucky to have this place. When one has numerous choices for where to spend their entertainment money, reviews can help others decide where best to spend. At 12:00 PM this afternoon, I took my wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandkids to the Neon Cactus in Allen. Big mistake. We were greeted by a manager(?) with a Bills Jersey on, who didn't welcome us, but asked in a serious manner if we had a reservation. "No". He seemed put off, seriously, and directed his hostess to take up to a high-top table. Good Enough, but honestly, I felt quite unwelcomed and that we had put him out, for some reason. Once seated, the server came by and seemed pleasant enough, but no smiling, no happy greeting, no enthusiasm. She did her job. delivered drinks, tried the mandatory up sale, and took our order. We received our food. Well, all but my son. Once the expediter served our food, our server never came by to ask if all was okay. My wife asked about our son's meal, and after a few minutes, we were told the kitchen had missed it and would make it now. We began eating. Twenty-five minutes later, no meal, and we are all done. Finally, the server brought the food. I asked that the meal be comp'd and please package to go. The server soon returned with it wrapped up. Here is the rub. No apology! No offer to comp the meal after the horrible service. No visit from the manager to offer his/her apology and promise to make it right. So my first visit, okay, fusion Mexican food. Very unprofessional greeting from the front of the house manager. Horrible and unprofessional wait staff and managerial acumen. I'll go again, maybe. Great bar and good chips. That is about all. My rating is closer to a 3.5 but couldn't select that so had to go with a 3. We called ahead, but when we got there we still had to wait about 40 mins with kids. It's still in their soft opening phase so not a big deal. Drinks were fantastic. I had the watermelon jalapeño one and it was delicious. I'm not usually one to order fruity flavored drinks, but this one was done well. Not to sweet. Perfectly refreshing and got a nice buzz, so it's not one of those froo froo drinks with no alcohol. Hubs had the mezcal/whiskey one and he really liked his as well. Presentation was beautiful as it comes out in a smoke filled glass box. We started with the deviled eggs and thought they were the best thing we had all night. Loved the crispy barbacoa on top. Chefs kiss. I got the 3 taco plate with the birria, Korean short rib and pastor and the pastor was our fave. The pineapple in it was a nice bright balance to the tender meat. The birria was a bit try, and the Korean was whatever. Not bad, but nothing special. Hubs got the birria ramen which was pretty good at first, but couldn't finish as it we got bored of the taste halfway through. Just kinda one note? Churros for dessert were good, but no wow factor there. I would give the whole experience a 7.5/10. Good spot for a date night with drinks and apps. Honestly the let down up front was wait times for food. The drinks were really quite good and cool, we had the tequila tasting flight and margaritas. The food was definitely average. It took a while to come out and was a bit bland. We had a table of 8 and ordered many things among us and it all had vaguely the same flavor. I know some restaurants and food manufacturers may add sugar to their dishes to enhance flavor and mask undesirable tastes. Sugar can act as a flavor enhancer, balancing bitterness and acidity, which can make a dish more palatable. This restaurant knows how to do that. My entire Chile Relleno which came with a side of rice included good amount of sugar which i felt like i was eating a dessert. Rice had sugar too . the side salad which came with the dish had sugar too. So this is a restaurant with bad tasting food and they know how to mask the bad taste. I won't be back read more

I don't usually give out 5's, but the Neon Cactus definitely earned a 5-star rating. My only regret for this review is that I didn't remember the waitress's name. We even met her parents, who were sitting behind us. She was fantastic. We arrived before the rest of our party and told the hostess this was our first visit. They went ahead and seated us. But they weren't very busy. The restaurant was very clean, both the dining areas and the bathrooms. The waitress answered many questions and provided great answers. I don't like it when you ask, "What's good here?" and the answer is "Everything." We ordered a variety of meals. The street corn appetizer provided three different versions of street corn. Each was pretty good, but the cheeto dust seemed to be the favorite at the table. I had a chili rellano and it was terrific. I liked that it wasn't fried. My wife had the chicken fajitas and said they were excellent. The corn tortillas that came with them were pretty good; they almost seemed like flour in their texture. My daughter had the tempura-style fish tacos and felt the batter was too thick for the fish portion. She would order them again, but would have them grilled. The other two dishes were the Big Dipper tacos and the birria ramen. Both had excellent reviews from the people who ordered them. Finally, they gave us a complimentary order of mini churros for the table. Who can complain about free churros? Well, I can, and I will admit I am being petty. As the menu says mini, they were small, but four were on the plate, and five of us. My wife and I split one and I could have eaten all four. This restaurant is halfway between our house and our daughter's. I can easily see it becoming our normal, let's meet for dinner choice. read more
