The white queso / queso blanco comes out bubbling and actually tasted better when it cooled off. Didn't have a lot of flavor, but not bad. The Big Dipper and Los Camarones (shrimp taco) were both very good. The El Mandarin (chicken taco) wasn't very good and had a strange flavor to it. It's neat that you can see right into the kitchen. The server prep area is weirdly right next to some booths so if you are sat there like we were, you get to hear some strange convos. At one point, one of the employees dropped the f bomb and the female waitress told him to shhh. Probably shouldn't sit there if you have kids. The waitstaff brings a handheld tablet for you to pay and holds it for you while you go through the screens and tip. The weekday lunch special is a good deal and comes with a salad and a churro--although I never received the churro. I ordered the birria tacos and they were good. My husband had the fajitas and said they were pretty good and came out sizzling hot. Service was the biggest issue. Our server never checked back to refill water or see if we needed anything, and I had to flag her down just to get the check. The restaurant wasn't busy at all (only about four tables), so the lack of service was frustrating. On the plus side, the decor is cute and great for photos, there's plenty of parking, and the bathrooms were clean with a baby changing table by the door. We had a very good lunch here. The drinks - the Mezcalita and the Ole Smokey, both were strong and smoked very well . The chips served along with with 2 salsas were freshly fried and that made all the difference . The salsas too were made from quality and fresh ingredients. We ordered the the Big Dipper and the Catch of the day - Mahi Mahi and both were made well and from fresh ingredients. What caught our attention was the sauce with Mahi Mahi which was made from mango puree and made the dish outstanding! Service was very nice by Ashlay. After getting into town for a business meeting, some of us decided to go grab dinner before getting started. We needed something walkable from the hotel and found the Neon Cactus. It is a bit more limited menu than I was expecting, but still was able to find something thay looked good. Started with a margarita flight. While ot was fine, I don't think I'd go for it again. It was 4 small servings and I didn't really care for any of them. I'd just get a different drink I know I'd like. I also saw esquietes on the menu and can never turn down corn. This dish was fantastic. My tablemates also enjoyed a d used it more like a dip for their chips. I got a quesadilla tray, which was half of 2 flavors. I chose chicken and birria. This was so much food. It also came with rice and beans. I ended up taking half back for lunch the next day. I enjoyed the birria with consomme, so flavorful. I visited this place a 2nd time within a 6 week period. It was better this time, but nothing to write home. Ironically, I had the same waiter this time. The service was very slow. There were multiple times when my friend and I were looking for the waiter and he just seemed to disappear for several minutes at a time. We were there for over 2 hours. The drinks took a long time to arrive multiple times after ordering. The waiter left dirty dishes sitting on the table for 15 -30 minutes while he walked by multiple times. We finally asked a busboy to take them. I worked in multiple restaurants as a teen and 20 something so i have reasonable expectations of service. This was a fantastic find we stumbled on. Didn't realize another restaurant had moved into this space after Wild Salsa left. Will certainly be back. The restaurant is bright, welcoming, and on theme. We skipped apps and ordered entrees, but due to the kids' orders, our food was delayed. To compensate for us waiting, we received an order of queso blanco. The queso is absolutely delicious and I'm not usually a fan of ordering queso at restaurants. It had a ton of flavor despite not having any meat and came in a scorching molcajete, so the queso never solidified or cooled down. The Mexican cajeta French toast was to divine! Absolutely fabulous in every way. The French toast was so crunchy, yet pillowy on the inside. It's not for the sugar averse, but the flavor was out of this world and was perfectly portioned. We ordered the texicali breakfast burrito with skirt steak. It was quite large and had everything you'd want a burrito to have. First off the vibes were great here and the interior is so nice! The chips were super fresh and the salsa you get was good but that green sauce was super good. On top of that, we got the queso and holy moly this was awesome. Had a little kick to it too which I loved and the stone bowl was a nice touch in keeping it hot. My first time visiting a week ago with a few girlfriends for dinner and visiting. We expressed our desire to casually enjoy appetizers, meal, and dessert while visiting to ensure (and be mindful of others) they were ok with an extended table. We ordered 3 appetizers, 3 entrees (2 ladies split one), and both desserts. When the appetizers arrived, we received the shrimp cocktail which we did not order and didn't receive the guacamole appetizer. They quickly remedied and gave the shrimp cocktail for free. Our meals were good, not excellent, but good. The desserts were probably my least favorite. The churros are not sticks and the dips are in very small round containers so it was difficult to eat with. We cut them into small bite size pieces but still a bit awkward. The churros were a bit overdone but not horribly. The flan was ok. All in all, service was good. Food was ok. Nothing to complain about but probably a tad pricey for the quality. I wouldn't order desserts again unless they bring something else to the menu. The atmosphere was chill. Seems much smaller inside than expected due to the extended bar area. However, plenty of space to eat and enjoy your meal. My friends utilized the restrooms and unfortunately, stated they were very dirty. So I can't give 5 stars for that reason and because the food is good, but not exceptional. If you're looking for a casual place to eat with decent food choices, this will do. Also, one thing I did NOT like at all was the bench. You sank very low. On a Saturday afternoon, I grabbed a friend and we went out for lunch and drinks. We arrived around 4pm and the restaurant wasn't super busy but the patio was mostly filled. We opted for the patio and sat next to the fire-pit! The restaurant is nicely decorated and does have lots of photo ops props for those interested in getting great photos! Our server was very attentive and came over to our table quickly to take our drink orders. We both ordered margaritas and chips and salsa were brought to our table as well. You receive a red salsa and a green salsa. I did not try the green salsa because mayo was in it- I am not a fan of mayo. The red salsa was yummy and my friend raved over the green salsa. For my main meal, I ordered the 3 taco plate. The big dipper taco was fantastic! The other two tacos were ok, but I would not order them again. After we finished our meals, our server brought out churros with two dipping sauces (chocolate and a salted caramel). Also,it's common for restaurants to close and open up later under the same owners) operators. I don't believe that happened here. My meal here was surprisingly good. It has the potential to be great and five stars but it was the little things that held that back. For example. It was mid afternoon and not busy. However,there were two bartenders and I thought it took too long for drinks to arrive. Part of the problem was the waitress came back to explain someone left the margarita machine on the night before and the frozen flight wasn't available? Also, my entre, although just acceptable,could have been hotter. Other than those minor events all was great. One issue for next visit could be seating. Most of the restaurant is long bench along the wall with 2 topper. They tried seating us there but fortunately there was a traditional booth . I had the loaded Tamale. Think Yucatan or latin American. Shredded chicken perfectly seasoned,embraced in a fluffy white masa and rolled in a banana leaf. I like it a lot. Chili Relleno with beef and subtle spices in a sublime sauce may be the best one going in Dallas right now. Superb. While I wouldn't in any way call this place "authentic" -- it is, after all, a fusion -- the food *was* delicious. For an appetizer, we got the queso blanco, which to our surprise came in a molcajete and was DELICIOUS. For the main course, I got the K-Drama Tacos and my boyfriend got The Big Dipper Tacos and a Lime Margarita and we were impressed! While the portions were smaller than expected, every bite was great. Neither of us were a huge fan of the rice or beans, but that's not a dealbreaker for us. Our server, Jules, was so knowledgeable, helpful, and kind throughout the whole process! There is a private enclosed space off to the patio that they said you rent out during the weekends. I decided to try this Mexican restaurant because it was all the rage on a local Facebook group. Honestly, I found it confusing rather than impressive. The complimentary chips and salsa were usually a welcome treat. Unfortunately, they were retrieved from under the bar which was unexpected and quite unusual. The start offered little reassurance. We drank a margarita flight and a smoked bourbon cocktail, called a Tio's BBQ. The margaritas were unremarkable. What about Tio's BBQ cocktail? That story was unlike anything I expected. It was completely different. Confined within the glass to get infused with Smokey flavor, its taste possessed several characteristics of a single, unpleasant burnt Christmas fir. The smell of it doesn't remind you of "good ole BBQ on a Saturday night" Just an excessive smokiness and a general lack of pleasantness. One mangonada and a mule. Very good drinks!! Then we ordered our food, a taco salad with shrimp and an Abuela Quesadilla (with Birria). But we were also provided with chips and 2 salsa's. The salsa's were amazing very good. Then our food came. Glad we asked for the dressing on the side as the Mexican ranch seemed more like the Bitchin' sauce I buy as Costco (real disappointment). But overall the salad didn't need dressing as the chipotle sauce the shrimp were cooked in was enough. Now as for the birria quesadilla, seemed more like a thin pizza. I had bites where there wasn't a single shred of beef to be found. However the overall flavor and size was enough for a lunch dish. The food and drinks were good. Did find the server a little rushed as we hadn't even finished the salad and she was already pushing churros, damn let me swallow and digest my food please. And before we knew it here comes the check with the usual "no rush but just going to leave this here".... Come one what happened to reading the table and seeing whether the guests are eager to leave or happily engaged in conversation. This is my new favorite Tex Mex place in McKinney! The ambiance and decor is so trendy & cute. Customer service is quick and friendly & the food is delicious! I'm surprised it's not busier. We started off with the queso & the deviled eggs. The queso is delicious but they serve it in the most shallow bowl ever. Pretty pricey for the amount that we're actually getting. The deviled eggs were it has the right about of savory with a weird sweet after taste. Idk how to describe it. I ordered the abuelita quesadillas with birria. I'm from SATX so when I say it was cooked to perfection, just believe me. I loved that it wasn't too greasy. Only complaint is that the waiter said they don't sell mocktails. Grabbed lunch here with my husband, and we were pleasantly surprised! We didn't know much about NC beforehand. The service was great and the food was fresh and hot. We ordered two lunch specials (steak quesadilla and shrimp tacos), which came with a house salad and churro, and two margaritas. We didn't care for the house salad at all. Using a different type of salad mix would help a lot. The quesadilla was good, but the protein needs to be cooked with more salt. The shrimp tacos (2) were pretty small, meaning small fried shrimp, but were delicious. I also enjoyed the side of rice. The churro was to die for! The margs were more ice than anything else, but that's the case at most restaurants. Anyhow, we think Neon Cactus is a gem and definitely plan on visiting again. We dined here one evening for a girls night celebrating January birthdays, there were 8 of us. Our reservation was for 8:30pm. It was cold that day and were initially seated in covered patio area. The appetizers were just okay as well, and for the price, we expected more. Nothing really wowed us. My family and I visited today, and while the food itself had promise, the overall experience fell well below expectations. We were seated quickly, and our server was polite and honest about being new. However, given that the restaurant was far from busy--only two or three other parties were present--the level of service we received was difficult to excuse. We finished our initial chips and salsa and asked another staff member for more. The chips were taken but never returned. When our server came by, he wasn't aware we had already asked, so he went to get more--but those never showed up either. After an unnecessary wait, we had to speak directly with the manager to finally receive another basket. Our drinks were also forgotten and had to be requested again. When the food arrived, our daughter's kids-meal tacos came out first, and our meals followed almost ten minutes later, leaving her waiting around while we ate. On top of that, the tortillas on our tacos were cold, which took away from the otherwise decent flavors. The restaurant attempted to make up for the experience by offering complimentary churros, which we appreciated--until we saw them added to the bill. Having to correct that at the end made the situation feel even more disappointing. The kitchen clearly has skill, but the service issues overshadowed the meal. Even understanding that our server was new, the lack of attentiveness in a nearly empty restaurant was concerning. At this point, I'm unsure whether we will return. read more
