After hearing and reading so much that promoted Nelson's, I decided to give it a try. The food didn't strike me as anything out of the ordinary, maybe 3-1/2 stars. On the other hand, the service was quite spotty- to the point where at one point the servers couldn't even decide who should be waiting on me. A new hire was a delightful individual who kicked things off and was very attentive, and then for some inexplicable reason she disappeared and another server took over who was not pleasant or attentive. When I wanted another drink I waited a while for someone to come to the table to check in on things but ultimately had to go up to the bar to order it. It's might be worth trying again given how many solid reviews there are, but my first experience was disappointing. read more

Finally made it over to Nelson's and happened to get there for happy hour. I got the lime margarita for only $7 and it was a GOOD margarita. Good as in it had alcohol in it and they make their own mix. I got the shrimp tacos and they had 5-6 shrimp per taco which was a generous serving. My hubby got the "Nelson's Best" sampler off the happy hour menu which was a good size and included enchiladas, tacos, and HOMEMADE taquitos. This review is from a few months ago when they were located in the two story building on the corner one block over from their current location. The drinks (margaritas) were just okay for the price. Our server was slow in taking our drink order and then after we received our meals he was not good at coming back to check on us. The food was okay. We think Tacovore has better quality and tasting Mexican food. We waited a bit for the check. To our horror...within a couple days we were notified by our bank about some charge on the card for $1,000.00 for an Air BNB in San Francisco. The last time we used the card was at Nelson's. Thankfully, we fixed the problem. We generally use cash....for obvious reasons. We don't feel that, as little as we go out to eat these days, that Nelson's is worth our money. read more

Great service! Our server was really nice and extremely efficient. Food is tasty. We got a couple kinds of tacos as well as a plate of nachos and liked all of it. I particularly enjoyed the tacos al carbon with carnitas. They also have a nice list of margaritas and other cocktails. The food is amazing, you can tell it's made with the love that Nelson and TJ routinely say goodbye to their customers with. The flavors are deep and varied, for me the highlight is their birria and carnitas. But I'm always blown away every time I venture into different dishes. You can also see the inspirations from Mexico meeting the Eugene market's food in every bite. But the real kicker for this place is their cocktails. They're soooooo good! They even have a whiskey based version of the margarita that is to die for. I'm bumping up my stars to a full five though, as I try to be sparing with that even for amazing food, because the atmosphere and staff. We enjoyed our dinner tonight at Nelson's! We walked in and were immediately greeted by about 3 different people. The vibe was very friendly and almost bar like--colored lighting and semi-loud music. The restaurant is on the smaller side (maybe about 10 tables) and did fill up quickly, but the two of us we were seated almost immediately. This was our first time here and we happened to stop by the weekend they expanded their menu. I had perused their menu online earlier this week and was pleased to see all of their new options. I ended up ordering the blood orange margarita which was one of their drink specials (very tasty, but the nickel sized pieces of blood orange kept clogging up my tiny straw). We also got the Whiteaker Burrito and the Sopes with chicken. Both very good! I was most impressed with the price of everything on the menu. The most expensive food item was their 3 meat monster burrito and even that was only $16. I feel like $16 is on the lower end of what you'd spend for 1 meal at most other places. Overall, we spent about $35 (before tip) for our 3 items. Will be returning to try some other dishes and margaritas! read more

There are not a lot of good burrito carts in Eugene. Let's be honest. Nelson's in the Whit is pretty good. I love that they use thigh meat for their chicken burritos and the seasoning is really good. I was pleasantly surprised, they live up to their hype! I had a blood orange Cadillac Margarita and it was phenomenal probably one of the best Margs I've ever had to be honest. We sat outside and the heater stopped working so I was a bit cold they did offer to move us to another table but the other customers were super loud so we stayed put. A solid 5 star! I had the Chile Relleno and it was fantastic. The jalapeño margarita was good but didn't blow me away by any means. The complimentary chips came out warm and well seasoned and the salsa had very nice heat for a serve everyone salsa. The atmosphere of the old Tinys building was lively and fun! Jordan was my waitress and she couldn't have been better, friendly, attentive, good conversationalist, and stayed busy! A friend and I had tried Nelson's food truck tacos a few weeks ago and they were good so we wanted to try the restaurant this time. We came in at around 6:30 on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised to see it wasn't packed full on the inside. Considering that the space is on the smaller side, it was nice not to feel like we were crammed in somewhere. They were able to pull some smaller tables together for our group of six right away. I will note, that it is a loud space for being so small, it wasn't as easy to talk with everyone in our party without leaning over to hear them. Our server was nice and helpful and explained that the first serving of chips and dip was free and would have a charge for a refill. When she asked about the kind of pico to bring, there were two options, hot or not. She also suggested the guacamole. I'm noting this now because it comes up later... First we ordered drinks, and those sort of took awhile considering they were drinks. But anyway, right now, they're doing the birria tacos on Tuesdays and Fridays only and half of our party ordered those! I tried the chicken tacos al carbon and my other half ordered the shrimp, both as a meal with rice and beans. Once ordered it didn't feel like we had to wait long. Serving sizes were good and it was a very filling meal. I really enjoyed my tacos, they were flavorful and done just right. I didn't need to add anything to them. My other half said his shrimp was fine, but not too epic and felt that the shrimp itself was tiny. The birria tacos were good, don't get me wrong, but I thought the tacos al carbon were better! I also felt that the guacamole was too blended and had too much lime flavor when used on its own as a dip with chips. When we got our checks, which our server was already punching out for us before we had asked, I think because they were ready to go for the night, it seemed a bit pricey. Namely because apparently the pico de gallo that they had asked us about for the chips was NOT the salsa that comes with the chips, it was an additional charge but I did not get that impression from our server at the time of ordering at all. So while the chips and a side of salsa (first serving) were free, the pico and gauc were not (I knew that about gauc, guac is never free!). Not really a complaint, the pico was good, just want to make it clear. Anywho, the restaurant seemed pretty ready to close as we were clearing out, around 8:45 or 9 even though they are open til 10. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, the food is good even if a bit pricey. read more

It's a bit hard to describe this restaurant, to me is is a cross between a restaurant and a food cart. The food offerings are the ones you see in a food cart (I think the original taqueria food cart sits next to the restaurant still). The drinks are more what a restaurant offers with margaritas, beers and cocktails. The street tacos with carne Asada were very good: deliciously spiced meat on corn tacos, 2 small tortillas per taco so it didn't fall apart which I always appreciate. Topped with fresh cilantro and (too much) raw onion. My husband had the carne asada fries: a good helping of hot crisp fries with carne asada, queso fresco, onions and guacamole. The guacamole was delicious with a hint of lemon. So, the food was excellent. But, the drinks were definitely not great. First of, we waited about 30 minutes to receive our drinks which I think is too long for drinks (acceptable for food in a busy place). My $12 Kinky Pink Margarita (passion fruit, mango and grapefruit liqueur, tequila, simple syrup, fresh citrus juice) tasted just like grapefruit juice with a shot of tequila. Very disappointing. My husband's horchata had way too much cinnamon in it. The restaurant is small with multiple tables, cute eclectic decor, loud and lively. Parking along the building is free but away from the building in the lot is paid parking. Street parking is always a challenge in the Whit. All in all, not sure if I would return and would probably do a take-out next time. read more

What else would we do, but a five star review?! Haha! That rhymes This is one of our go-to favorites in town! The vibe is fun and upbeat. The food is delicious. The margaritas are refreshing and the staff is so kind. My personal favorite is the Chile Relleno plate. It might seem crazy to put potatoes inside, but when you grew up with potato enchiladas, it's just so delicious. The habanero pico de gallo is my other fave! My 11 yr old is pretty picky and has several faves here. He won't eat cheese and so he loves the taquitos with no condiments & the Al pastor street tacos. read more
