Totally would recommend, based on our experience so far. We are always wary of calling a plumber out of the blue, preferring instead a referral from people we know. But recently (around October 2023) we relied on Checkbook and then cross-checked on Yelp. That's how we found Nelson Plumbing (Carrie). We thought we would start with a minor toilet repair job, and see how it goes. She took care of it no problem at reasonable cost. Having passed that test, we gave her a much more complex job of replacing our gas hot water heater. She did a fabulous job, very competent and professional. After the cold snap, the pipe to our water main burst and we had a waterfall down our driveway. I wasn't sure if people who do indoor plumbing also do outdoor plumbing, and I'm happy to say that Nelson Plumbing can do both extremely well. Carrie hooked a hose up between our home bib line thingy and the water main so she could turn off the leaking pipe. Carrie and PJ came back and replaced the pipe, and it was not a short distance, and it had to go through lots of roots. Even though I told them which plants they could sacrifice, PJ was very careful to save them. They were very careful to remove the sod and put it back. he only beings not happy were the birds and squirrels who didn't like the interlopers in their backyard. We HAD galvanized pipe which after 40+ years was bursting..literally. Carrie came in and repiped in all copper with beautiful joints and added a buffer tank (you know you get that pipe knocking, well no more) and insulation on the hot water lines. I have a home built in 1955 and after years of receiving solicitations to buy water line insurance I thought, why not just replace the water line? So I called 4 plumbers for an estimate. Nelson Plumbing's estimate was fairly reasonable. But that's not why I hired them. I hired Nelson Plumbing because when I called, Carrie who answered the phone, was to the point and able to answer all of my questions sufficiently. I had no idea at the time that Carrie was actually going to be the one to do the work. Turns out that this was the best choice I've made selecting a contractor in a long time. The work sight was so clean and neat, I was simply amazed. They cut a perfect line through my lawn, tarped the dirt and when they were done they replaced it and it almost looks like they were never there. I've had a bigger mess left by contractors simply changing out my lawn sprinkler heads! But not Nelson plumbing. Now I don't have to worry about those pesky water line insurance solicitations again. They were considerate of our family and our home, and made sure every detail was covered, and that the project was done thoroughly. They also took care of all the permits and made sure the entire project was done according to code. We also had little side jobs that needed attention that they took care of without hesitation, such as an unbalanced, leaky toilet. When Carrie was unhappy with her drywall patch job, she called in an expert from San Jose to redo the work at no extra charge. It was fun to have them here in our home; we actually miss seeing them! One thing that everyone faces when it comes to plumbing issues is the fear of how bad the problem's can be. This is definitely one thing Carrie and PJ take care of first for you. They make you feel comfortable right at the start. The biggest fears of repiping is not knowing how the piping was orginaly done and of course the walls coming down to expose the piping that needs to be fixed. Nelson's Plumbing did a fabulous job putting these fears aside. Unlike cheap joe-schmoe types, they didn't hammer out and rip the drywall off the studs to expose the pipes, but rather carefully and precisely cut cleanly the appropriate amount needed to expose the pipes and do the work needed to repipe. No extra custs were needed. In addition to that, when they were done with the job, our walls looked exactly the same as they did (minus the paint) prior to the job. Our drywall is tectured as well, and they did a superb job on making it look exactly as it did before. They're very courteous and careful with their work. They respect your home and make sure they take the proper care to make sure it's exactly the same before they got there (with the plumbing work fixed). I had removed my water softener and needed some minor repiping in that area and replacement of the main pressure regulator. Also, one of the shower faucets needed a new cartridge. First off, Carrie was really prompt in her responses. She came in the next day and did a wonderful job. The old shower cartridge needed to by cut out and she was very patient with it. They are a real gem that is so hard to find in today's plumbing business. In today's world full of big companies hiring technicians with little regard on experience, quality, or personality, I was very apprehensive about my copper-repiping project. I was very reluctant to use a big company, knowing too well that I would have to depend solely on luck to get a good technician working on my job. Based on my past experiences, contracted technicians are under the company's pressure to get jobs done as quickly as possible so that they can move on and collect more money somewhere else. Copper-repiping is not something to rush to the finish line. It is too expensive and too big of a job to risk your house with companies that do things in a hurry. My house was not an easy project. My crawl space was very difficult to work in. PJ and Carrie were in my house for two weeks and finished the job right on time. Yes, copper repiping job is messy, dusty, noisy, and involves lots of big holes in walls and ceilings. But every night when I came home, PJ and Carrie left the house in a clean shape as if they were never there. Every single night, they closed all the holes in walls and ceilings, they vacuumed and mopped the floor to minimize my distress of living in the middle of a construction. They never walked around in my house outside of the drop cloth they put down to protect my floor. They treat my house the way I treat it myself. PJ is very meticulous with everything. After my review below, Carrie from Nelson Plumbing contacted me and apologized for not getting back to me with an estimate. Since I had not yet picked a plumber for my re-pipe, I gave her another chance to bid the job. I really wanted to get a bid from her because out of all of the plumbers I met with, she seemed to be the most thorough and detailed. She came back out to the house and we went over everything again. She got back to me with her bid and it was comparable to other bids I had in terms of cost, but again, it was far more detailed than the others. She really covered all of the bases with her bid. We ended up using Nelson Plumbing and it was a great experience. Before the job started, were sent a list of things to expect and also how to prepare for the re-pipe. Throughout the job, we were kept informed of the progress and when to expect the water to be off. They were very careful to keep the house clean and put down drop cloths to protect the floor and carpet. At the end of every day, they cleaned up and left the house looking as clean as when they started. Carrie and her brother Chris worked very hard throughout the job even in 100 degree heat. I was very impressed with their dedication to doing it right the first time. Some things to note - you can barely tell that they dug a trench in the front yard to replace the water main, also, they were able to re-pipe the toilet supply lines without disturbing the tile on the wall, something other plumbers didn't even want to address. These are the type of people that you feel comfortable letting into your house. They get that it is a somewhat invasive process and they try to make it as easy as possible. Plus, they are very nice people! Also, Carrie came out last week to look at one of the toilets that was filling slowly. It turned out that some of the rust from the old water pipes had gotten into the flexible line that connects it to the pipe coming out of the wall. Carrie and Chris set the standard for how I want all my outsourced home improvement jobs to go. From the moment I first spoke with her to the final payment, Carrie made my whole house re-pipe easy and minimally disruptive. I especially like that she didn't ask if I wanted the work to be permitted; I think that with her it is implied that she stands by her work and has it vetted by the city, especially with jobs like this. Since I never had to deal with a service disruption being away at work while they worked, my only disruptions were by my own doing in making my little House of Horrors as easy to work on as I could for the two of them. Perhaps that worked in my favor, because they were pleasant, helpful, thorough, considerate, and upfront about everything. But I'm sure the level of the service would have been the same regardless, given all the positive feedback across Nextdoor and Yelp. Here's another happy customer standing by their work. I felt comfortable trusting them with complete access to my home while I was away. Okay, so I consider myself quite the handyman. I can build just about anything. Wire up my own lights, switches, fans, and such. Plumbing? Well, I can make it work but really am not a fan. In 1994 we bought a house that was built in 1947. For the past 10 years we have put up with slow drains, less and less water pressure and for me, my wife making my life painful every time she couldn't shower or the drains backed up. (Usually when I was traveling... House loves me!!) We decided to remodel one of our bathrooms and while talking about it realized that we would be better off first cleaning up all of the plumbing problems. We spent a few months looking for a company that could do the work, and had a reasonable price range. We knew that our sewer main to the city connection was bad (paid for a camera to go down the pipe a number of years back), and it was obvious that we didn't have enough water pressure and the amount of corrosion/mineral deposits coming out of the faucets were the problem. We finally decided on Nelson Plumbing. The decision was mostly about the way that PJ handled the review of the house, when others simply through out a number. He took the time, and to be honest, required the time, to do a thorough check of all of the connections, layout of the house, etc.. to make sure that to the best effort he could provide an accurate estimate of time and materials. Did the estimate change during the work? Sure, but I have never known of anyone who could be 100% accurate even on commercial construction jobs, 100% of the time. Layout, effort or depth of pipes, funky connections from the 40's, etc.. can all be a bit off. We had trade offs in the work. Some things took longer, others took less time. PJ was always careful to walk us through any likely change or option and allow us to decide for ourselves. All in all the work was perfect and the final cost was no surprise. PJ and Carrie are meticulous about opening up the work area in the morning, doing as much work for the day as possible and completely closing up and cleaning up before they leave at the end of the day. In the end we had the sewer main repaired, a city clean out installed, all of the house re-piped with copper, not plastic, and along with their partner electrician and drywall guys the finished work was excellent. Worst customer services! The operator was nice and I explained that I think my cold water hose was leaking but not sure, I want to get an estimate. When Nelson called back for the qoute, he said "What's the problem!" "I explained again. He said "So!" I said again, can you give me an estimate? He said "It is $125/hour for the service call and $25 for the parts." Then I said that's good, but what if it is something else, I'm no expert. If there is something more than a hose, can you give me a qoute after looking at it? He said "Look, I don't have time to waste, I'm busy. If you want to do it, do it. I don't have time to play game with you." I was surprised with the attitude he has as if everyone supposed knows extactly the plumbing problems they have in the house before calling him. Nelson, You've just lost a business from me. I then call 3 other places. Everywhere else qouted a service call for $95/hour, and they agreed to come get an estimate to make sure what the problem it. If there is something else, I would be qouted and ageed upon before charging. And if it is just the hose problem like I mentioned, they would charge me $12 to $25 for the part, plus $95 service/repairing fee. That is the most basic customer services. On top of that his price is at the top end of everything, labor and parts. I think Nelson is just too cocky for getting loads of business from the previous reviews. read more

Craftsmanship takes time. Carrie & team recently did the copper re-pipe for our whole house. Everything they did was high quality! We've had a problem with a capped pipe in our front yard overflowing occasionally in the past couple of weeks. Today it started overflowing again so my husband figured it finally had to be dealt with. Finding a trustworthy and inexpensive plumber can be a challenge, so I figured I would find out who others on Yelp would recommend. I chose Nelson over any other plumber because of their extremely favorable Yelp reviews. I spoke with Carrie Nelson about the issue we were having and she was able to determine that it was a City Main Overflow (?) issue. Basically we were not responsible and she instructed me on how to contact the City of San Jose and what to tell them. I contact the city department (on a Sunday) and the crew arrived about 30 minutes later. Problem was resolved and sure enough, as Carrie said, it didn't cost us a penny. We are so grateful to Carrie and her helpful guidance. Another less reputable company may have come out and charged us, only to find out that I would still have to resolve it with the City. I am so glad we called Nelson Plumbing. In addition, Carrie called me in the evening to follow up and check to see if we were able to get in touch with the City sewer department, and if we were able to get the problem resolved. NOW THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!! (Which, yes we did get the problem fixed and it was a minor blockage in the city's pipe.) We will definitely be contacting Nelson Plumbing again for any of our plumbing needs. We needed to replace our sewer line outside of our home and the drain lines under the house. We opted for Nelson Plumbing because they were willing to dig a new trench to correct the original sewer line that was poorly installed. We also needed to replace the original drain lines under the house which had started to corrode. Carrie and her brother were very thorough during the estimate and, unlike some plumbers, actually went under the house to inspect for the estimate. They also wrote a clear and easy to understand estimate that spelled out what they were installing and what materials they were using. We had them install a second clean out at the sidewalk (per code) and put in a new 2-way cleanout next to the house. Under the house, they corrected the slope of the drain system to improve the flow and replaced the bathtub waste overflow drain. They pulled the permits and scheduled the inspection ahead of time so there were no delays. The cleaned up every night and we were only without plumbing for a few hours on day 3 and day 4. Regarding the landscaping: they efficiently removed a 5 foot tall rosemary bush that had grown into the sewer line and excavated around the gas main in our front yard. They carefully removed the sod and reinstalled it. And they compacted the soil to 95%. We also had them repair a small drywall hole under the sink that had been left by a previous plumber during an emergency repair. Throughout all of this, they answered our questions (some of them multiple times), were thoughtful and steady working. Their parents also pitched in - truly a family business. One note: because this was done in the summer, they were very busy and there were times were we had to wait to hear back from them. This happened during the estimate phase - once we were on their schedule things proceeded much more smoothly. Wanted to replace 2 older toilets that were taking needing regular maintenance from me to stop running, flush right, etc. and remembered I my home inspection report from 15+ yrs ago mentioned galvanized pipe that should be replaced, so decided to call the plumbers and get it all taken care off. Called Nelson Plumbing, based on our previous great experience with them. Carrie got back to me within an hour or so, came out to quote the job the next day, and set us up w/ an appointment a few days later that worked for all of us. On the day of work, ran into some more issues to resolve (galvanized waste line from kitchen/garage that was starting to show rust/thin spots, PRV with a small leak, and located under the house where it'd be tough to see / fix). Carrie talked me thru the new issues - gave me her inputs and advice but didn't pressure us at all (couple of items she thought could wait I preferred to do then, before I put it off for another 15+ yrs...) Got the toilets in / done that day, and Carrie and crew came back another day that worked for all of us to do all the under the house work. Great work - very fair prices, they went the etc. mile to put in a bunch of blocking between floor joists and properly hang the water pipes (old ones were literally hung by a couple of wire coat hangers) - no extra charge, they did it because it was the right way to do it. For folks who complain about customer service - they're a small job - it's Carrie and her crew. The person who answers the phone is at a generic phone center, takes your info, and fires it off to Nelson Plumbing. But if they off on a job, under a house and or in the middle of something that needs to get done (like replacing water pipes and you have 0 water in the house until it's done), there's no time to answer right then... In August, 2009, I returned from a trip to discover than an underground leak had developed in the main water line from the street meter to my house in the Almaden Valley. I chose to call Nelson Plumbing based on their ad in the yellow pages, and spoke with the owner, Richard. That same afternoon, Richard came to my house to provide a free estimate. After discussing the options with him, I decided to go with his recommendation to replace the entire length of a 30-year-old plastic supply line with a new copper line, which involved tunneling under landscaping and a concrete walkway. Richard and an assistant showed up bright and early the next morning, and worked steadily through the day to complete the task on time as promised. I am very happy with the way the job was handled, and quite impressed with the way the job site was cleaned up when the job was completed. I wanted to repipe my 60 year old, 1400 square foot house, from original galvanized metal to copper piping. I selected 4 top recommended plumbers in our area and talked to them over the phone. One of the plumbers I called did not do repiping, and highly recommended "NELSON PLUMBING". So, Nelson Plumbing was one of 3 companies I decided on, to come out and give me a bid. What I liked best about Carrie from Nelson Plumbing, was when she came out to meet with me, was her "can do" attitude. If I asked her, "Can you recess this pipe back into this wall?", she said "Yes". With the other two companies, it was either "no" or "maybe". I got the feeling with the other two larger companies, they would "get in" and "get out" quickly. While, with Carrie, I got the impression, they would do the job, to my satisfaction, until the job was done. And that is exactly what they did. For the cost of the project: Nelson Plumbing came in with the lowest bid. And the larger, well known company met their bid. Nelson Plumbing was a long time, family owned business. I like supporting family businesses. I thought the job, may take a bit longer, rather than a larger work crew. But, that was OK with me. Their estimate of time for the job would have been right on, if they hadn't run into so many obstacles. Obstacles were: outdoor junipers that seemed to worry the other companies, rocky creek bed soil to bore through, working with a converted garage/family room, and the list goes on. What can I say, it is an old house. But, they would readjust with each obstacle they ran into. They worked longer than normal hours. They cleaned up after EVERY DAY of work. They arranged their work to maximize our use of water needs. And, they remained professional through it all. Carrie was patient with my questions. She communicated through words, diagrams, showing me hardware, whatever it took to get the information across. I ask a lot of questions and she always had complete answers. They attempted to exceed my expectations, which are high, and succeeded time and again. It has been a few months since they completed the job, and I wonder, why we didn't do this years ago. The original pipes had corroded to where you could barely get a pencil through the center of the pipe's opening. We could only run one appliance at a time. The shower had become almost nonoperational, because bits of corroded material had fallen off within the pipes, and were now lodged somewhere you couldn't get at. NOW, we can run the outside irrigation, while running the dishwasher, while taking a shower and so on. NICE!!! Carrie called back to see if we were having any problems. And, I am confident, if we did, they would be back to fix it. Everything is great. After hearing the faint sound of running water for a couple of days prior, I came home one evening to a little river running from my yard, into the gutter, and down the street. That faint running water sound was replaced by a louder KA-CHING. Not only was my service line in need of repair or replacement but my lawn and ground cover was going have to be dug up, Ugggh! After consulting a review of plumbers from my local area and making a few phone calls, I realized that there are a lot of plumbers that don't do the type of work my problem required. However, I did get a recommendation from one plumber that was high on my list and I reasoned that a plumber with his type of rating wouldn't take the risk of blowing it by suggesting someone questionable. So I gave Nelson Plumbing a call. Nelson Plumbing accessed what needed to be done and gave me a couple options. They also promised that they would be very careful in putting my yard back together. In my head I said yeah right. But the work they did was true to their word. Although I had my doubts that the work could be done without damaging my sprinkler system in some small way, I was happy to have been proven wrong. You could hardly tell where the work had been done; I didn't have to do a thing after they left except follow their suggestion and run the water in the house for a while. And they did everything in one day The service is very old school friendly and the quality is first rate. I definitely recommend Nelson Plumbing for repiping and line repair needs.
