Unfortunately, there were no signs or guidance showing where the line should be directed, which made things confusing from the beginning. By the time I reached the front, the owner (I'm assuming) a woman with glasses and long black hair spoke to me in a passive-aggressive tone and told me the line was actually on the other side. Given the setup, it wasn't obvious at all. There's a fence directly in front of the shop, and with the large crowds that day, it was even more chaotic. I tried to be understanding and moved to the correct spot, but while I was waiting for my drink, she repeated the same interaction with several other customers in the same tone. People were clearly confused, walking around the fence trying to figure things out, and without any guidance, I saw multiple customers leave frustrated. Customer service, especially from the owner, was disappointing and could definitely be improved particularly during busy events when clear communication matters most. That said, I'll give credit where it's due: the drinks were great. I'd rate my banana coffee a solid 4.5/5, it was delicious, and the heart-shaped straw was a really cute touch. If you're running a business, especially in a high-traffic setting, better organization and customer service would make a huge difference.

The flights come out in metal racks that were intended as candle holders. Creative use. I chose the ESPRESSO LATTE FLIGHT: The wife got the MATCHA FLIGHT with the same fruits. We sipped each other's flight for fun to share thoughts. STRAWBERRY: -- this one probably works the least ideal but still works -- they need thicker straws because the strawberry puree shrapnel gets stuck...so we sipped from the glass and used the straws intermittently -- the strawberry FOAM is bomb as are all the foams RATING = A- BLUEBERRY: -- a similar experience to strawberry but it works a touch better with blueberry morphing with bold coffee better RATING = A BANANA LATTE: -- banana chip on top nice touch -- the softness of the banana morphed perfectly with the espresso and the matcha for each set...these just worked together the best -- the wife does not even like banana but stated this fact RATING = A+ COCONUT LATTE: -- if you can handle the highest sweet factor of all it will pay dividends -- this was my favorite overall tasting one -- the toasted coconut flakes put it over the top -- sweetness is past medium and leaning high RATING = A+ Overall, I preferred the espresso flight, but I prefer coffee to tea typically anyway. I check the reviews and all good things. So one day when I finally had a few extra minutes I stopped by. The owners were both there. They were extremely kind and helpful when deciding. I loved that they also offer cookies, pastries and THE BURRITOS.... Oh those yummy burritos are perfect. As a Hispanic, this is how we would make them at home. Small quick bites that are full of flavor and easy to eat on the go. I digress, back to the star of the show, the coffee! I first tried the Vietnamese iced coffee which was perfect for this tired mom of 2 who runs a small business. Then I got hooked on the iced mexican mocha for a long time. Not sure what Mexican chocolate they grind up in there but it's delicious. And recently I tried the Banana pudding latte and holy guacamole its perfection in a drink! Not too sweet and so well balanced with notes of cardamom and a cold foam that seeps into the drink making it one of the best tasting lattes I've ever had! From the welcoming atmosphere of the shop itself, to the delicious coffee, to the unforgettably kind owners Joe and John. Joehns is very involved with its community, including custom made artwork, sculptures, mugs--that alone makes you feel like you are a part of something, a part of San Diego, a part of Joehns! I cannot conclude this review without discussing how overwhelmed with appreciation I am with the owners. We spoke with John as we learned more about the shop, and he gave us Happy Beans, a sort of lucky bean or a talisman, which I will undoubtedly carry with me as a reminder to be the kindness I saw in John. Prior to leaving, John stopped my sister and I to offer us each a free bouquet of flowers Be the change you want to see in the world. Like a book that stunned you to your core and the only way to relive that feeling is to get others to read it as well. University Coffee is that book. Proudly on display right around the corner. I was recommended this coffee spot by a fellow gym goer after a heated game of pick-up basketball. She told me she basically lives there (turns out she owns it) and through some strange magic I felt a need to find out more. Heck, I'm hopelessly addicted to caffeine - like any good working-class stiff. Let's give it a go. From the moment I walked in, I was enthralled. As if someone had carved a section of nirvana and placed it on a cozy street corner. Entering, calming music set the tone as the art and ambience emanated warmth. Being indecisive, I slowly trundled up to the register where a sharp and welcoming gentleman greeted me like I had been a regular frequenting for years. His name was Allen and this man made me feel like the long journey I was on could wait and I might find respite in this place. This is where I became hooked. Seeing my indecision the woman behind him (Angela, who I recognized from her unfortunate loss at the basketball courts) stepped towards me smiling to say hello and ask what I was in the mood for. I attempted to sound sure and asked for the special that day which was a delicious sounding matcha latte that I requested iced. Deep regret filled my heart as I focused long enough to observe the menu, seeing a pantheon of unique drinks that all would likely make my head spin. Almost clairvoyantly detecting my fear of missing out; she recommended some of the food options, making me an insanely delicious, filled croissant. She gave me an extra because she could somehow tell that I'm perpetually hungry. Not leaving anything to chance I opted for the fresh baked cookie sitting on the counter shelf as well. As I briefly waited and enjoyed my order, people came and left all seemingly captured by that same feeling washing over me. Bliss. I've been back to Uni Coffee multiple times now and each time I get to enjoy another handcrafted drink recommended almost specifically for me. I sit and enjoy the regulars sharing their stories with Angela as she listens intently and shares her thoughts. I curse myself for spending years making instant coffee at home or picking up some formulaic drink after waiting in a queue while the people around me stare at their phones. They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, but second best is today. With that, I thank the girl on the basketball court for teaching me it's not too late to appreciate the good things in life. Found this cafe a few months back just driving down University. They have a simple menu with…read moredelicious coffee. We have had Angel's landing, Chai latte and the Mexican mocha. All drinks have been wonderful. The cafe is a medium size with lots of sitting area, restroom, a mini community library. A good place to work. The service is always delightful.
