An absolute gem of a store. Popped in on "Knit in Public Day" & what treat. The shop owner, Aaron showed us around and the place is pretty big! They have a Yarn room, a fabric room and a room I'd describe as a hobby room where you will find buttons and needlepoint projects. My favorite room is the communal room where folks can gather to work on their projects and chit chat with other folks. It was really nice to see the ladies around the table sharing tips and tricks with one another. Aaron was very friendly and super encouraging as he helped guide me through my first little project. The new owner, Megan is wonderful! I came in to see around the store and ask for help on a knitting pattern. I've been knitting for 2 years and this is the FIRST time I've ever asked someone to help. She gladly helped me and guided me through for a solid 15 minutes. She also welcomed me into their weekly knitting groups. Wow!!!! I love when I'm traveling and I find little shops like these. They do seem to carry more yarn but their fabric selection is still amazing. Absolutely fell in love with ever print and if I could I would take it all. I'm happy to know that I can order their stuff online. That makes it easy for someone like me who isn't from the area. The prices are fairly the same as big box stores which I love. This makes coming and buy small so much better. They also have unique fabrics that you won't find just anywhere. 10 stars!!! I visited this lovely business when I was out of town for work. When I do have to go out of town I, like many knitters like to see what yarn shops are in the area and what types of things they have that are exclusive and uncommon. While I was here I got to chat with the owner who was a wonderful and friendly person. I wanted to return to their page and write a review because here we are, some time later and the blue water cowl with the colorway that was exclusive to this store is done! Love this start. My wife used to come with my mom years ago. We were in town again so we decided to stop by. The shop has a ton of yarn, fabric, and supplies. The owner was great to work with. I went again to visit the store a couple of weeks ago. They had plenty of yarn this time. Great selection. I got two skeins of green Malabrigo yarn, absolutely divine, so soft, and so so pretty. I'm making a very modern scarf, my design. This time I was in a hurry and could not stay too long (my husband was waiting for me in the car). Again, the gentleman there, I presume the owner, was very polite. There was an atmosphere of calm and serenity in that store, something that I really appreciate in our crazy times, when everyone seems to be in a hurry. Hopefully I'll come back in a few months and spend more time there. I want to get a cross-stitch pattern, something fun and pretty. The store is stocked with all different kinds of beautiful yarn and the staff is super friendly and helpful! The owner even went out of their way to help me when I didn't have the right crochet hook size! I visited while on vacation, but I would come here all the time to stock up on materials and try their classes if I were local. Been wanting to drop o to this neighborhood yarn store for awhile and finally made it today while in SD for the weekend. A man was helpful showing me a couple of locally spun yarns. I ended up purchasing a pretty dk yarn that I'm looking forward to getting on my needles. They are well stocked in fingerling yard and also have fabric. Huge variety of yarns, fantastic environment, solid prices. I didn't end up buying anything, but I did end up inspired as it comes to life. The proprietor is fantastic, and as an introvert it was great to have a place in Mission Beach where I could go and say 'hey, I've been to Mission Beach,' without feeling absolutely overwhelmed. I didn't have long to stop since I had 2 toddlers in tow, but I managed to get in and out with 2 lovely spools of 100% wool yarn in a burgundy and cream for my first Christmas stocking. Staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly and offered different patterns for me to try. I will definitely have to go back when I'm on my own. The prices were reasonable and selection seemed really broad. Again, I was in a hurry, so I can't say if they have Alpaca etc. They did have a variety of affordable wool. The parking was easy and the store was very cute and cozy. Another plus was that it is a stone's throw from the Purple Cafe where we ended up having lunch. I've never been one to leave any kind of review that had any sort of length to it. That being said, I've never had to until now. This was my first time being in a small-time yarn shop. There are no longer any dedicated knitting and yarn shops in my area, and so I usually have to go to either Michael's or Joann's for anything craft-related. However, I am not necessarily a novice when it comes to knitting or crochet. I picked up knitting and crochet nine years ago. Backstory aside, when I decided I wanted to meet other people who knit that I could make friends with, naturally I looked for events that were within reasonable distance. This is how I found the Needlecraft Cottage. My boyfriend drove me over an hour just so I could attend yesterday while the Yarnover truck was there. We didn't get there until after one, but regardless, I was beyond excited to be there. I go in by myself, as it's a small shop and my boyfriend is somewhat claustrophobic. Now, I don't dress conventionally by any means. I feel most comfortable in dark clothes, and I have green hair. But to any good business, that shouldn't matter. I was friendly, quiet, and I tried my best to stay out of the way. I tried to make friendly conversation with the women there, and I was ignored and brushed off. I spent most of my time, looking, alone. No one asked me how I was doing or if I needed any help. I went out around the back to look inside the Yarnover Truck. I tried, again, to be friendly and make conversation. I mentioned that this was my first time at any sort of yarn store, and that I had been knitting for nine years. Still, I felt as though they weren't taking me seriously. I was told that the yarn being sold was very expensive. That the yarn sold at Michael's and Joann's was garbage. I was talked over. Ignored. While I didn't go here expecting to be able to afford anything, leaving empty-handed certainly played a part in my now diminishing mood. I left, twenty minutes after I got there, ridiculously anxious and feeling unwelcome. I've never been treated so rudely in my life. If you aren't an older, graying woman with a lot of free time and money, it may be best you take your business elsewhere. I know I will. I will continue to spend my money at Michael's and Joann's, because not only are they cheaper, more accessible, and have a growing selection, at least they treat me with basic human respect. read more

I came in for a knitting emergency: I accidentally dropped a stitch. Being new to knitting, I did not know how to remediate. Elizabeth was not only an expert in seeing the issue, she knew how to fix and demonstrated two techniques to help avoid future issues. The new (they've been there over a year...are they still new?) owners have really been developing the items available for sale. They have a wonderful supply of yarn for needlework. They've also added quality quilting fabric which is a super addition to the store. They appear to be very responsive to customer requests and are developing a very nice beaded/non-beaded cross stitch kit supply in addition to carrying cross stitch floss and patterns. With the closure of other shops during the pandemic, the Needlecraft Cottage is one of the shops still in the central San Diego area. read more

What a funny little shop, literally a tiny little creaky cottage that even an asthmatic wolf could probably blow down. They have a respectable array of yarn and knitting supplies and books which share space with crocheters and needlepointers. See the knitting table in the back room. If you know what you want or don't practice all of these crafts you can be in and out of the shop pretty quickly. The prices aren't unreasonable and you should be able to find something appealing, though you may already have it. Amusingly, penis is not welcome here. I watched the starchy owner and crusty customers rudely step in front of, reach in front of, and speak around and over the only man in the shop who quietly accompanied his lady knitter friend. No one said "excuse me," "pardon me," or anything at all to him, and they carried on as if he weren't there while they had no problem speaking to her. It was rather appalling on a business level and shameful on a gender level. While the gentleman endured politely, the couple did look at each other bemused at the bad manners and discourtesy served up in a store selling warmth and home. Such a neat little place, and a decent selection of real yarn! I was once young, and wide-eyed and thought that the yarn selection at (insert national-chain hobby store here) was pretty damn awesome until I joined some online knitting communities and started hearing people wax rhapsodic about mysterious substances like "malabrigo" and "alpaca". I ventured to a couple of local yarn stores and found my little south-county nirvana at Needlecraft Cottage. On my first visit, i was a little nervous after hearing tales of other LYS with snooty staff, but the people here were welcoming and more than happy to explain their layout and stock, encourage shameless petting of the yarn and wind a few skeins into balls for me. I also like their extended hours at least one day a week and Saturday AND Sunday hours. for those of us who work too much, it's nice to be able to still make it to the yarn store without having to shift schedules to accommodate the store's limited availability. read more

The staff is so wonderful. I have gotten ideas for projects and yarn for multiple projects from hats to blankets. They understand about textiles and will share their knowledge and passion with you. They went the extra mile to make sure I got what I wanted; when the yarn for my son's blanket was back ordered, they found the yarn and made sure all 22 skeins had the same dye lot. This is a good go-to yarn shop. The employees are nice, and they value their customers. The yarn selection is good, and they have good quality yarns. They especially have a lot of Baah. They have a GREAT selection of needles and notions. Parking is tough to come by, but I've always gotten a spot right out front. The inventory is practically the same as any other San Diego yarn shop. I am a knitting addict, and feels great to know that I have such a wonderful place to go for higher quality yarn so close to home...instead of having to deal with disgruntled employees at big chain craft supply stores such as Michael's or Joann. Lots of wonderful yarn to choose from...if you don't see it, ask for it. If they don't have it, they will gladly place a special order for you. I'm not into needlepoint, but there is an entire room dedicated to it. I plan on taking a couple of classes here to learn how to crochet...$20 for a two hour class is cheap! The amount of knitting/crochet patterns/books there was almost overwhelming. The yarn seemed pretty affordable, considering the quality. There is a separate room where you can find the bargain quality yarn, along with just about any size knitting needle imaginable. The shop itself was very cozy and quaint. I didn't catch the name of the person working there (I think it was the owner), but she was super nice and helpful. Super friendly and awesome selection. Lots (!) of Baah! in every fiber type and color, plus lots and lots of patterns to inspire you to play with Baah's colors. In addition to Baah, Needlecraft Cottage carries some fo the national brands (e.g., Cascade) and a couple other specialty yarns like Sweet Georgia, Unique Sheep and Teresa Ruch Designs. I visited during the SDYC and found the staff to be busy but still have time to talk to customers. From the signs, it looks like they offer a ton of classes, too. Went here twice during my short trip to San Diego because I couldn't get enough! A little pricey but worth it for high quality yarn. Pretty cute yarn store. There was a nice variety in prices (pricey hand dyed, local yarn in the $20+ range AND skeins in the $10). Not a giant selection of needles or yarn. Cute little knitting and needlepoint craft shop manned by very knowledgeable owner/sales lady. At first I thought that the owner was not too sensitive to young people or beginning needlecraft aficionados, but I have changed my opinion. While the nice ladies who work in the shop seem to be oriented towards power-users, I think there is some responsibility on the part of the customer to make her or his needs known. If you ARE a beginner, tell them so. Speak up. Ask for help. From what I have seen, the owner and other customers in the shop will treat you as an equal, and a valued customer, if you are clear about your needs. When I was in the shop recently, I sat at a table with another gentleman as our wives and families shopped. This other guy, who was older and somewhat grizzled, spoke to me at some length. Topics of the conversation included trucks, trailers, guns, and beer. But, dear reader, that is NOT me. While I DO enjoy my beer, I don't collect guns or hunt for sport. Point is, his wife and my daughter had something in common (knitting). But I suspect that was the only similarity between him and I. I was on vacation and stopped in looking for yarn to finish my current project. I went in with a friend of mine who, not being a knitter or crocheter, picked up patterns she found interesting and would ask me if I would be able to make it. A clerk overheard her asking me and before I could answer my friend (or even look at the pattern), the clerk said "That pattern is written using english terms, so no she can't". EXCUSE ME?! Just because I'm not old,retired or a local doesn't mean I can't possibly know how to read (or find the resources to convert) different styled patterns. I have never been treated so poorly in a yarn store before, and I will never step foot in that place again. I guess if you're older and have the look of a needlecrafter you won't be looked down upon. read more
