I almost never write reviews. But this is an exception--based on the exceptionally nice treatment I just experienced at Needham Bank. I had come to get a document notarized. But I arrived just after they closed for the day. But an employee saw me outside in the window - and, long story short, she eventually came outside on winter's day, and helped me get my document notarized. This level of customer service --- above and beyond -- is really rare, and I'm very grateful to Needham Bank, and Brittany (I think that was her name) and the Store Manager who also helped me. I have been with Needham Bank for both business and personal checking and savings accounts, and mortgages for over 25 years and I recently started a new company and chose a competing bank. Ever since Needham Bank began it's transition to a large bank the service has become terrible. The bank's new online banking platform is terrible and extremely difficult to navigate. And you know have to log onto a separate Bill Payment for bill payment. It doesn't make any sense to have to login to online banking and then use a separate ID and PW to login to Bill Payment. The new online banking website was a disaster and the new bill payment is even worse. How can a bank just get everything wrong when upgrading their services. read more

We are "failover" customers from BankProv and already the red flags are waving. Their Bill Pay utility is absolute horsesh*t, they are unable to send payment when requested, no response when attempting to contact them. New customer via Bank Prov that cannot reach the bank on the phone; all calls are disconnected after 6 minutes on hold. Call back feature does not work. They will reply to email and only say, to CALL the bank. Sorry but the phone lines are not working. No way to login to the site and check my banking. read more

I had a personal checking account and a business account. All went well until I sent a polite letter pointing out that it is improper, and not good practice, to make online passwords expire. Why should they, if they are perfectly good and uncompromised? Nor is it proper to prevent me from seeing the new password as I type it (twice). Did I mention that this was a polite letter? I was only trying to be helpful. A week later, I got two certified letters cancelling both of my accounts. I see that Needham Bank gets only three stars in reviews here. Now I know why. Spent a lot of time with the construction loan team for my house in Massachusetts and got nowhere. These people really know how to make a seemingly straightforward process be as bureaucratic as possible. This bank made me go through a really arduous process for my construction to mortgage loan only to agree to finance me 20% of the loan I needed. If I knew they were going to be so stringent on their loan terms, I would not have applied, but they made me through it all (mountains of paperwork) anyway. I needed a construction loan for $1mm. That was the price of my project as laid out by my contractor. Needham bank thought the Reno was only worth $200k. Can you believe that? Waste of time and drove me crazy. Happily took my business elsewhere. I also lost $600 in the process. I also wonder if they are discriminating against people of color since I am a person of color, but yet have excellent credit and substantial assets. They obviously don't care about getting good new clients or about helping to support people of color. The guy I worked with is Frank Driscoll. Nice guy, cordial, but very unhelpful and he probably doesn't care as long as his job is safe. read more

Updated review (third time!) 10/25/2021 I finally got things resolved with the bank thanks to one of the more helpful employees there. When I arrived at the bank, I signed documents and all parties were very patient and understanding with my requests. The main coordinator understood my frustration with the massive delays (detailed in previous reviews below) and waived a considerable fee for me (hundreds of dollars) to make up for it. Very considerate move. Everything is set now, so I'm bumping the star rating from 1 to 3. The only reason for my frustration was the massive delays. I'll leave a higher rating in the future once my relationship with the bank matures. Another week goes by after I ask them to clarify what they need, and they don't get back to me, not even to say they are working on it. I have written multiple emails to different people at their bank inquiring about this very thing. They either do not check their emails or simply don't care to respond. I have sent 5-6 emails on another issue just asking a basic question. It took them ANOTHER WEEK to get back to me with a half-assed answer which equated to "we will get back to you." Just in the past three days, I sent them three emails with absolutely no response of any kind. One person was on vacation (they never set a vacation auto-responder, of course, so I was clueless as to why they didn't respond), and one of the other people I corresponded with was crickets. When they told me someone else could help me, I reached out to them, but I encountered the very same unresponsiveness. They leave me no choice. They are literally the only thing keeping me back from starting my business and today was the last straw. I'm done waiting for them to prove they can handle customer service like professionals. I told myself I would send this review to Yelp and let them know I didn't want their business if I didn't hear from them by 3:30, so here we are. They have managed to waste 4 months of my time and demonstrated a level of incompetent unprofessionalism that is nothing short of miraculous. I'm going with a bank that actually bothers to respond to its potential clients. How they manage to stay afloat as a business is a mystery. Look at some of the other 1 star reviews and you'll get an idea of how awfully slow and obtuse they are. I have been with this bank for close to 2 years and I am totally disappointed with their online banking. It is not straight forward and many times I have to call their company to get instructions on how to make simple changes. I find this extremely frustrating and have complained numerous times. Nothing changes. I have also told the reps that I will close my account at the year-end and their response is nonchalant. It is in my calendar to close this account year-end and go back to my original bank and get the service I deserve as a customer. read more

I concur with all the good things that have already been said. From being greeted at the door ... Easy free parking and an exceptionally nice staff what more could ask for? OK ... Competitive interest rates too. After a poor experience, at another bank, the day before I was more then pleasantly surprised by the attention given to me by personal banker Stephanie who at the conclusion of our business made it a point to introduce me to Jeff the branch manager. I spoke with Jeff for a few minutes and was provided with more valuable information. From my brief time at Needham Bank I would say they seem to carry on the tradition of old time neighborhood banks. I look forward to doing more business with them in the future. If you have been dealing with a mega bank and get a cold and impersonal feeling ... check this place out. I would like to extend a huge shout out to the employees of needham bank who are working tirelessly from their homes and wherever else they can to process the PPP loans that will help the small businesses in our community stay afloat As a recipient of one of these loans I can tell you the process and paperwork involved is challenging. Beware the SCAM! I spent an hour uploading personal and private information in order to open a checking account. In spite of my perfect banking record and high credit score, they denied me a checking account. And they won't tell me why, in conflict with Federal regulations. I've been attempting to refinance my house with Needham Bank for the last 4 months. I started the process in late July, it's early October, and I still don't have a closing date. And, no, this isn't a complex refi. There is lots of equity in the house, I've got perfect credit, I'm simply going from 15 years to 30 years to lower my monthly payments so that I can redirect that money towards paying for college for my kids. It's not that they aren't courteous, it's that they are amazingly slow and very old-school. In contrast, when I last did this with WinterHill, it took about 2 weeks, start to finish. I'm almost at the point of telling them to go screw themselves, but I'm also hopeful this nightmare will finally end. My advice: pay slightly more and choose an easier bank to deal with. read more

I recently applied and got approved for a loan from Needham bank to purchase a condo. My loan officer was Lori Schofield, and she provided an exceptional service. I initially reached out to her after placing a buy-offer at a different property. After reviewing it she candidly warned me about the high risks of that property, and probably saved my life. Later when I found a better place, she enthusiastically helped me get started with the loan process, and quoted me an interest rate much lower than other banks. I was a bit skeptical at first, especially with all the bad reviews this bank has had in the past. But, when I brought this up to Lori, she assured me that things had changed and I could count on their services to get me a loan on time. During the loan review process, Lori's team was highly attentive towards each detail about the property. They uncovered potential issues, and closely inspected each issue to ensure that I was buying a safe home (and also to protect the bank's investment). There was one particular instance, where I was not able to obtain documents pertaining to a certain issue. However, they went above and beyond to seek out different sources that helped us in getting the required paperwork. They were also very responsive every time I reached out to them with questions and concerns, and took time to properly explain each step of the loan. I spoke with Chris, gave a brief overview of my project, and he immediately told me the bank "doesn't do condo construction loans." Awesome Bank! I've had nothing but great experiences with Needham Bank since opening my account in January (2013). Opened the accoont after getting fees from BoA and TD, as Needham Bank's NB Checking is 100% free. However, I was ridiculously impressed with their mobile app, as it allowed me to deposit checks which I did not expect from a community bank. They also let me use every ATM in the country free of charge, and give me back any ATM fees that the machines charge me. Love the bank and their commitment to community support and giving! I don't care about free parking or useless greeting at the door. This bank does not have many features other banks have (online check deposit, mobile banking, etc.). They closed my business account because I had too few transactions and because I refused to open and move my personal account to them. They explained that they "can't see my full financial picture" as if I was doing some illegal transactions. First time they simply sent me letter demanding in pretty rude form to close my business account. I called them had a talk and they "allowed" me to keep my money there. Well, second time they called me approximately at a time they sent me letter again (to wrong address). If you have any business other than lemonade stand - stay away from these guys. read more

Every time I go to their main office in Needham to do business, I leave feeling like I was their most important client the day. This bank has kept true to it roots of being a community-oriented bank. Needham Bank always have plenty of staff ready to assist clients, the employees are friendly and happy, and, I LOVE doing business with them. I have three small business accounts with them, and I have never had an issue with the transactions, or, being asked to move my personal accounts to them. And to be honest, if they were closer to my home, I would immediately move my big-bank, just-a-number, poor service, personal accounts to Needham Bank. Yes, I feel they lack in the area of online banking, which is the only reason I'm giving them a 4 star review. As a client, I would suggest they upgrade their online system to better serve those of us that don't live close to one of their locations. We worked with this company to refinance our house. They pre approved us for a low rate of 2.79% for a fixed 30 year rate. We submitted all the paperwork necessary, answered all their questions and were lead around for 1 month. They came back with a higher rate and wanted us to take our an arm loan! The loan rep, Michael Isaac, led us on and requested mountains of paperwork. We submitted it all. We tried to sell the house prior to refinancing but decided to keep it as our primary residence. We said we would apply as a couple to get the 30 year rate (which they discouraged in the beginning), but they wanted us to start all over, equaling a higher rate! They also put up a stink about it not being our primary residence even though it will be in the next month!. This is a a truly misleading company We lost more than $600 in the process of dancing around with them. Do not use Michael Isaac or this bank. Do yourself a favor and go to a legitimate bank or credit union. We're moving on to a bank that is 100% truthful and actually cares about its clients and their time read more

I haven't been to the main branch in Needham but I have been to Wellesley and Natick and the staff is excellent. They are very polite and helpful and if there is any problem they will guide the customer and follow up until there is a solution. I recommend these banks highly. read more

I got tired of being treated like crap by the huge, nationwide bank so the BEST thing I ever did was switch to Needham Bank. They have plenty of tellers, a big parking lot behind the bank in Needham, everyone is friendly and accommodating. If you want to deal with someone higher than a customer service rep, no problem. I can't tell you all of the nice things they have done for us in the last 5 years but I would highly recommend them. They have 2 ATM's, one inside and one outside. My only complaint is that the driveup ATM requires you to get out of your car, unless you have very long arms :) but it's not a big deal. read more
