Sniff, sniff, sniff as my pup digs and examines with his nose deep into a small bag of puppy treats. It's a fully sealed container with freshly made jerkies from Dog Mama and loads of free samples. I barely put my bag of goodies down for a second and I felt he knew what I had brought home for him.
Dog Mama is located on Kaheka Street, a couple doors down from Longs Pharmacy. It's hard to miss this place with decorations of all kinds for anything dogs. A couple of water bowls is in place outside for any thirsty pups to drink from. What attracted me the most is it's signage for all things "100% natural and homemade". I was kindly greeted by Elin, the owner and the chef behind the wonderfulness of all these natural goodies. She immediately didn't refuse to chat about her specially made doggy treats. She had stated she was at the old S. King St. address. It explains why she looked very familiar to me. My pup has had her doggie treats and samples during Pet Expo from a few years ago. While I continued to peruse, the store is filled with eclectic doggy paraphernalia, dog typography's, leash, collars, girlie outfits for pups, puppy bags and more. I especially adored the Polaroid photos that hang along the walls of puppy customers that frequent the store. Specials are on the chalkboard upon entry of the board. Here you'll find specially made treats for the day.
Elin continued to explain certain meats/veggies that provide vitamins and minerals that benefit dogs. I didn't know Pumpkin Squash is good for kidneys and helps control glucose level, and anchovies with fatty omega 3. She stated that there are no added salt, or additional flavoring on any of the treats. The treats are especially home made at the store or at home and then cooked to perfection. Her idea began with the heavy concern of her pups' well-being and all the unhealthy contents and preservatives on manufactured pet treats. She began her research on anything that's become harmful for her dogs and brainstormed an idea of creating her own natural dog treats, Dog Mama was born.
These natural puppy treats are especially perfect for higher allergy pups. On a shelf filled with eclectic samples, Elin pulled the Beef Sweet potato Roll as their most popular selling doggy treat. This sells out frequently. Among other jerkies offered at Dog Mama are chicken, venison, strawberry beef, salmon, blueberry beef, Okinawan potato and so much more. Prices do range depending on size from $3 to $20 or depending on special order. $20 for combination of flavors is not too shabby. Dog Mama is earth friendly as well through the buy a container filled with treats program and return that same container on a new order and discounts are applied. She's mentioned her frequent customers call in custom orders and return with their containers and refilled at a few dollars off. I grabbed a container of Apple Beef Jerky, Elin gave me a handful of samples, their most popular Beef Sweet Potatoes, Anchovy Powder for flavoring, Okinawan Sweet Potato Sticks, Jidori Chicken Hearts and duck neck. Wow, no wonder why my pup was all over the fun filled treat bag. In lieu of doggy foods, Dog Mama also offers Cat Bentos and are of rare commodity to keep on the shelves. It's best to special order them.
After my pup carefully scrutinized every treat and consumed the contents in the bag, I knew then that Dog Mama will be a great addition to the list of local brand puppy stores I will frequent. I'm looking forward to my next visit with my puppy in tow. Thanks to Elin for a great service and for education on good quality dog treats.
