For my 40th birthday I needed an all natural hair stylist to wash, trim, deep condition and basically FIX my hair. I found the most perfect space on Nostrand Avenue in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn! I was nervous...I have a tender head and it was my first time in many years getting my hair professionally done. After going natural in 2007 I lazily resorted to "wash and go" styling and very inadequate home care. I needed a healthy beautiful mane for the birthday celebration. I was concerned about the condition/health of my hair and also styling it (Pain? Heat? Color? Cut? Extensions?). Jennifer of Natural Hollywood started with a personalized, in-depth, comprehensive consultation. I felt welcomed, comfortable, cared for, and definitely like I was in the right place. Jennifer addressed every need, concern and question I had. I felt totally at ease and we made plans for a deep condition, GOOD trim, blow dry and curl. I was super excited! The service started with the shampoo - it was spa like: relaxing and massaging yet thorough (the definition of healing hands). Then the deep conditioning treatment - it felt amazing and smelled amazing. We used macadamia natural oil deep repair and it softened and defrizzed my lopsided Afro expertly (a great recommendation from Jennifer). I was prepared for my trim and blow dry. The blow dry was quick and gentle but methodical. The trim was precise and painstaking; leaving behind only the most beautiful, healthy, shiny tresses. I was ready for the (curl) style: Jennifer used a wand curling iron and laid down every last hair on my head. She then pin curled each individual curl (literally) to keep the style intact and fresh for my birthday! Overall, my experience was so incredible and my hair was so beautiful that I had to write an extensive review about it. A perfect visit really: completely personalized and accommodating. I've been trusting Jennifer with my sensitive scalp for a little over a year now, and I must say I wouldn't know what to do if she were to ever leave :'( lol. After much hemming and hawing (if'ing and but'ing) I decided back in 2016 to start my locs. I knew based on what I had seen in the African braiding salons in my neighborhood that I wasn't just looking for someone to DO my hair, I was looking for someone to care enough to KNOW it. I found what I was looking for in Jennifer for sure. She has always been understanding and helpful in dealing with my issues. I have to use medicated shampoo to treat my scalp as I have seborrheic dermatitis, and she always makes sure to leave me with a clean scalp when I go in for my maintenance to keep the flakes that accumulate on my scalp from ending up in my locs. She has also been helpful in suggesting ways I can change my diet to aid in my scalp health. She always inquires about how my scalp behaved over the weeks after my last visit, and will adjust her approach depending on what I tell her. For instance, I noticed I needed my styles to be looser than usual because it helped decrease the amount of irritation caused as a result of my scalp condition, and Jennifer was understanding and able to still leave me with an amazing style. As a result of her attentiveness my locs have flourished, and they always look great! As far as booking appointments with her: I have always had an easy time scheduling my appointments as her website is easy for me to navigate. From the first talk, she seemed very succinct with time, which is a plus for me sometimes Salons can go much longer than needed when doing your hair lol ! My hair was in a sad state, I had been going through a depression and needed major TLC. I came in for a trim that included shampoo, condition, and two braids after. She gave me advice about what she sees in my hair and why getting trims for my personal hair goals is a good idea. After shampooing, she gave me a complimentary deep condition which I desperately need it! I inquired more about hair concerns, growth, and creating a routine for myself. Not only was Jennifer completely patient and gave me advice about how the health of me is a reflection on the health of my hair, she also gave me life advice, which I definitely needed. Jennifer Lord is a true master of her craft. I have highly textured hair (some call it 4c) that loves to shrink and tangle. But more importantly, I have extremely high standards. Jennifer has always surpassed my needs and expectations. She cares about the health of your hair just as much as giving you a style you can rock with pride. She is not scissor happy, so my trims never end up being a cut that I didn't ask for. She has GREAT energy, is not gossipy and you always leave feeling more uplifted than when you came.
