I am soooooo crazy late on my review and I'm literally sitting in the salon RIGHT NOW waiting for Princess to finish my mom's hair so I'll make the best of this time! I can't say enough wonderful things about RAE Beauty Company! From the very first consultation I had with Rae back in the summer, I felt like I'd found a true gem. Rae (the owner) is both personable and professional. She truly knows her craft. When I first walked in, I was feeling down about my hair changes due to my health, and Rae didn't just give me a hair consultation, she gave me a safe space to vent and feel heard. It was like talking to a sister who just happened to be a hair expert. Rae was so thoughtful, giving me great advice on what would and wouldn't work for my hair in my situation, and suggesting alternatives that made me feel confident again. It was a blend of a consultation and a much needed mini-therapy session. You just don't get that kind of warmth and genuine care everywhere. On top of that, my stylist Princess was equally amazing. She's professional, skilled, and just so easy to talk to. I LOVE her personality! She explained every step, listened to my preferences, and made me feel like I'd known her forever. The whole salon atmosphere is welcoming, calm, and so comfortable. It's a beautiful well lit salon with a zen like atmosphere. Even the hair washing bowls and chairs are designed in a way that put my mom at ease, which is a HUGE DEAL for us. At 84, she's particular about comfort now that's she's dealing with a spinal issue. The day that I had my hair done, Princess brought her to the sinks so she could test out whether or not she would be able to withstand the hair washing/ rinsing process. She left that day feeling hopeful. She had her hair relaxed today and she left feeling absolutely pleased and pain-free. In short, if you're looking for a place that treats you like family, knows their stuff, and leaves you feeling beautiful inside and out, RAE Beauty Company is it. I highly recommend them! A secret Brooklyn Gem . What I appreciate the most is how professional Rae and her team is. This is a location with patience. I originially came for I-tips (my future goals to get done at the salon). While trying to get it configured Rae was kind about me trying to figure out a scheduled date. But the availability and organization is what I appreciate the most. Its hard to find a stylist thats available now with no bs. If you are looking for consistency I would say this is a good location. I am a new customer and i plan on staying for my routine cuts and silk presses. The ladies detangled my hair with no hesitation. ( Ladies be realistic about what you bring into these salons). They do advise of any upcharge, no surprises. I was in no denial abt the wreckage I caused during these past few months. Took my daughter here for her first silk press because she was dying to see how long her hair was. Right off the bat scheduling was easy because of their online booking system. All prices are quoted on the site and if there are gonna be up charges after they see your hair they speak to you privately and make sure you approve before proceeding with the service. By appointment only and they mean it. We booked for an 11am on Saturday and the shop called us a couple days before to move us up to 9. We got there right on time. One of the hosts was already there opening up and offered us fancy tea while we waited. (I'm a sucker for some fancy tea y'all). They even had the little agave sticks and assorted sweeteners to appeal to different tastes. The hostess started taking my daughter's twists down while we waited for her stylist (Princess) *note: take downs are extra so if bringing your little one, make sure to take down and detangle a bit before you arrive. Once she was washed another stylist did her blow out. Of course my girl needed a trim because it has been ages since she got one at home and because she's 100% natural, Princess cut her hair in long layers so she wouldn't lose all of her length. Princess made sure to talk to my daughter the whole time and let her know what she was doing. It was also great because we got some good consultation about ongoing care while we were there. All in, we were done in 2 hours and my daughter was able to get all of Princess ' attention. My son and I sat in their waiting area sipping tea and reading their dope collection of unapologetically Black coffee table books. Love this place. Sad I found it just as we're moving out of Brooklyn. Will make a point to get me and my daughter's hair done here any time we are planning to visit.. read more

I absolutely love Hair by Rae Salon! I have been twice, first time for the beauty supply store and when I tell you the products are a God Send! The black soap is so bomb for my skin and the oil I use for my hair has helped keep it healthy moisturized and even its growing girl!   Second time I went to get lash extensions and I am not going to lie I was scared. I haven't had lash extensions in 10 years due to how uncomfortable they are but babyyyy I can't feel them they are so full and I feel like a badddddiee! Also having a luxury salon as a black women that caters to your needs is amazing. The customer service, the snacks (Girl they got MOET), the decor and lighting just all a yes! I would really give the salon 3.5 stars, if I could. The salon is very clean, it's modern, they had covid protocols in place, they are friendly, and the stylist I went to was good. BUT, the prices are astronomical. I made an appointment for a dusting (not a trim not a cut, just lightly dusting a few stray hairs) and it was $20. They said I had to add on a wash because a dusting was an add on service. I agreed and got my twa washed and dusted. My bill was $90 without tax. My hair was not styled or deep conditioned. And I know this doesn't matter for price, but I have almost no hair. So I guess, I recommend the salon if you've got money to blow. UPDATE: Rae reached out to me personally about my concern over the price for my wash and dusting. She was very kind and professional and found there had been a miscommunication about the services I was receiving. First and foremost, HANDS DOWN TOP NOTCH SERVICE! The salon is extremely clean starting from right out front all the way inside the salon. They follow COVID regulations and it is much appreciated. Salon owner Rae and her assistant are very friendly. I was greeted upon entering and felt very welcomed. What validated everything for me was the fact that while I was there receiving my hair services, I witnessed the owner Rae and her assistant greet and provide every single person that came through that door with the same GENUINE mannerism. That speaks VOLUMES to me! On to my actual hair install and overall hair outcome; PHENOMENAL!!! I've had microlinks installed in the past and it was no where near as good, efficient nor as perfectly matched as it was with HBR! Rae matched my hair perfectly to the extensions and the actual install was quick, neat, painless, NO TENSION, and SLAYEDDD!!! For those wondering, I have fine wavy/curly hair and Rae Metowi method feels amazing and is perfect for my fine hair... Rae pin curled my hair as my event was the following day and when I released those pin curls and ran my fingers through, LORDDD HAVE MERCY! My hair was full of volume and such beautiful curls it was just GORGEOUS! Rae is a true professional, knowledgeable woman in what she does. She's a true expert. I will never ever go anywhere else. She provided tips on how to properly care for my hair and extensions. Made recommendations for treatment. Rae even gave me recommendations for my kids hair and styles they want. I've used both Rae's in-home styling services, and gone to the salon in-person, and this is the only place I'll let anyone touch my hair in NY. I really appreciate the emphasis on taking care of the health of your hair. The most recent service I got was microlinks, and Rae was extremely patient, explaining the whole process and how to manage the install to promote health/growth. Extremely transparent and reasonable pricing, and the quality of services can't be beat. Highly recommend! I'm happily extoling the virtues of Hair by RAE: The last time I had box braids was October of 1994 (ask me how I remember). But the whole process of getting them and taking them out was so tedious. And I'd tried throughout the years to get to the point where I'd find myself doing it again. But between finding someone I trust who wouldn't go too tight, wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg, was available enough to work with my schedule and of course working through the aesthetics of some of these shops (you KNOW what I mean)... I was pretty convinced that I'd never be on trend again with braids of any kind. Till I found Hair By RAE (while googling to find solutions after another horrific experience trying to get my hair braided.) You can schedule and pay for it online. The price was SUPER reasonable (i would have paid more from most of the quotes I'd gotten from brick and mortar shops), THEY COME TO YOUR HOUSE (Or wherever you are - hotel, office whatever), This entire head of hair took 4.5 hours to install. The technician (Marie) was WONDERFUL, sweet, professional, organized, we got our political talk on while watching MSNBC and? IT's BEAUTIFUL and comfortable!!! Totally agree with Unoma O. below - my experience with microlinks was sadly the same - low quality hair, cold, borderline mean staff - with little regard for your actual style preferences, and very pricey. Two stars for the salon's cleanliness and decor. I ended up finding La Sorelle salon in the Bronx for the most pull-free install of my life. Even calculating in the extra cab fare, its a far better deal with a sweetheart of a stylist who does exactly what you asked for - with quality hair and top notch skill. Prices are very competitive as well. For microlinks, I'd go elsewhere. read more

Hair by Rae is great for protective styles and the salon is nice and clean, which is always important, but especially during a pandemic. I have been to them three times for box braids. The only negative things are their scheduling systems and chemical applications. Twice HBR has changed my appointment time or pushed it back. I'm not sure if their scheduling system just does not recognize if multiple people try to book the same time or if they over book. This proves to be unfair when you're sitting around waiting for a stylist and if you were late they would have charged you for being late. I also got a relaxer touch up from them once and after one wash it looked like there was never any chemical in my hair. They also have a sign that says "complaints were due yesterday" or something like that sitting by their register, so you get the point. Overall great protective styles though! read more

I'm honestly really disappointed because after following them for a while on Instagram I was super excited to book with this stylist. I also intended to try them out before committing to box braids for my upcoming trip. I'm really glad I did because the experience I had today helped me realize that this salon is not for me. Firstly, I booked with Princess (master braider) over a month before for a wash, condition and blow dry that included a two braid service. My appointment was changed shortly by the front desk who reported that Princess would not be available and that they would book me with a stylist Kristina. I was assured that there wouldn't be any difference with my particular service. Subsequently, after placing my deposit and confirming my appointment two days before my service, I was notified that the simple two braid service I had inquired about wasn't what was provided and that I would need to book a braider. I was very confused cause I had booked a braider initially. The front desk worker who I spoke with, Desiree, was very nice and accommodating and called me back to let me know that she would see if Princess would be available to do the style. I was confused after being told initially that Princess wasn't available but figured fine if I could get the service done. Desiree confirmed with me that Princess would be available for the service but that it would be an additional charge with hair included. Please note, that in regards to the hair used, was not the best quality and honestly looked like leftover braiding hair. Fast forward to the day of service, Desiree washed and conditioned my hair and was as pleasant as ever, but my major issue was with the experience I had with the braider herself. She didn't acknowledge me when Desiree introduced me as her 11:30am appt. She was rough with my blow dry. Her vibe was completely cold and seemed annoyed and put out by having to do a service that I wonder if she had initially declined because she did not feel it was profitable enough. Despite my efforts to gently remind her of the style I wanted and show her pictures, she was dismissive and seemed like she rather get it over with. It's the worse kind of experience by somebody who knows that you likely can't find another last min appointment and could care less. Even worse than all this was the fact that she lowered her mask to separate out the extension hair with her mouth! I mean, it's COVID time, but even so, I don't want the spit of a stranger on my scalp. Although Desiree tried to coax me into telling her what I didn't like at the end of the service, to me it wasn't worth it. The whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I was on the verge of tears. I would 100% not recommend this salon to anyone, or atleast this braider, although the actual salon was stylish and clean. The three stars are for the customer service from the front desk and the style of the salon and that's me honestly being generous. Please go somewhere else for your natural hair needs. read more

Dezzera is amazing! She was highly recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad that I decided to go with her. Dezzera was the only stylist to give me a comprehensive beauty plan that carried me from my engagement shoot to my bridal shower, to my bachelorette getaway down to my actual wedding day. And believe me this made all the difference! I looked amazing at every event. She was always prompt and is very knowledgeable about hair care regimens as well as products. She also goes above and beyond to make sure the job is done and done well. Prior to the wedding I had concerns about my sister/ maid of honors hair, as she had suffered dramatic hair loss a few years back and is very self conscious. Dezzera set up a separate trial with her to go over wedding day looks to ensure that she felt confident on my big day. This meant everything to me. The day before the wedding my fiancee's loctician who was supposed to do his hair and my niece's boyfriend's hair, never showed up, putting us behind schedule. Dezzera swooped in and was able to retwist and style my cousin's boyfriend and style my fiance. She worked quickly and was able to help us get back on track. On my actual wedding day Dezzera and her assistant Kenshy stayed with me throughout the day and was there at the ready with hair spray and brush/comb in hand for touch-ups for not only me but my bridal party as well, as we did an early reveal and photoshoot on the beach in August!
