I appreciate her making the effort to be socially engaged and responsive if you have any issue with the process. Unfortunately, I come from working with an amazing stylist and the only reason I explored other options is because my very successful loctition is heavily booked. Only to find that all the good ones are. I conclude that I am lucky to have options because I live in Mew York. I have decided to keep my own appointment book; and to put reminders in my phone when I should set up salon appointments. I am blessed. My first words for this review was, "Extremely happy with my results!!". That sentiment was almost a year ago, when I first came to this salon thinking that I finally found someone who genuinely knew what they were doing when it came to my locs. I attempted extensions in the last with another loctician, but their lack of expertise cause my locs to constantly come out and have to be reattached. Fast-forward to now and I'm very disappointed in this business and their customer service. I had my initial service last October and all was well (interlocking and loc extension install). I went on vacay shortly after and had been directed to stay away from conditioners and to be very gentle of I had to wash my hair, but ocean water would be find. Luckily, I pretty much stayed out of the water. My next appointment was Nov/Dec and unbeknownst to me, I had a comb retwist. I was not sure exactly what I was getting and what the difference was, from my first service. This was not really discussed with me and since I am very new to locs, I just folled with everything - my fault. My hair was fine after the second service but then began to lose a few locs. I lost only 3, which in my opinion was not the end of the world - I lost many others during my loc maintenance journey with my former stylist. Unfortunately, I was unable to return to NappStar for quite some time. I did book another appointment until May. When I made the appointment I just asked for the same service as my last, not knowing at that time that it had been much different than my initial service. The day came and was taken to wash out the dye I put in my hair prior to my appointment (I use a specific dye and I was told from the start that it would be OK to arrive with the dye already applied, and they would continue with the rinse out process. My hair was washed and dried under the hood, and then I was taken to the styling chair. Someone else came over and went over my appointment. They asked me if there were any issues and I mentioned the locs that broke off. I ran out the house without them but the manager at the time, Scarlet, was nice enough to provide me with three new ones. They were not the same color as mine but looked nice, as they resembled highlights. I was very thankful for that and the fact that they did not charge me for that extra bit of help. The remainder of the styling went seemingly well. I thought everything was fine. My hair looked nice when it was done, I paid and went about my day. After the first week, I could tell something was wrong. My hair was very loose. It looked and felt like I never got a retwist. I was upset because it did not look like my finished styles from my past visits. It looked unkempt. I immediately called and explained to the person with whom I spoke, asking why I was given a comb retwist and not an interlocking retwist (I searched the site to figure out what service I actually had), because I had asked for the same service I received prior. The person said that I booked a comb retwist and that was the service I had received at my last appointment. They further explained that my initial appointment was an interlocking session. That is when I realized I had made a mistake for this particular appointment. While I accept my role in what ultimately led to my unhappiness with this service, I must add that the salon does very little to counsel patrons, unless it is one of the managers. Duringy first two visits, the manager was very involved with my appointment, ensuring that I was informed about aftercare and addressing any concerns. While she stopped by during this last visit, and helped me out with my loc detachment, there was absolutely no counsel in regards to the state of my hair. I believe that the stylist that was doing my hair should have spoken to me about the state of my hair and offer an alternative to the service for which I was initially there. I feel like she should have told me what to expect and how to care for my hair afterwards. There was one particular loc that had me a bit concerned and I thought she took care of it but she did not and she did not even ask me about. With the amount of money that was spent, I expect to have hair treatment, a dialogue about what I might be doing wrong and what should be done differently. This place came highly recommended by my gf that began her loc journey with the and after seeing what looked to be informative videos and marketing, I believed they would be helpful to me. I have no problem spending the money if I know I'm receiving excellent service and customer care. Shortly after calling about my dismay with the styling, I began losing more and more locs. I lost over 16 that became detached. They just started falling out and a few more weeks later during a trip to Costa Rica, I lost even more. I have a love hate relationship with NappStar. I'll start with the good...their stylists are consistent with the quality of work. I've been here about 5 or 6 times and have had 3 different stylist do my hair -- each of my styles came out literally perfect and very close to my inspo pics. I also love that it's an easy process to book online. Where they fall short is their waiting times. There have been days where I've come on time for my appointment but would be waiting more than 30 mins after my wash to get my hair styled. Do not ever waste your time and money going to NappStar. This was the most disrespectful treatment I have ever experienced at a hair salon and I am absolutely infuriated by how I was treated. For context, I actually really like my stylist, Belinda. I am extremely particular about my hair and who I trust with it, so I booked my appointment weeks in advance. I am also a very busy professional and business owner, meaning my time literally costs money. When I schedule hair appointments, I close my calendar and lose income for that day. On top of that, I live in Princeton, NJ, so getting to NYC means either driving or paying over $40 roundtrip on the train. Today, after I was already on the train for my appointment, only an hour and 5 minutes before my appointment, the manager called to tell me that Belinda could no longer see me because a "VIP client" needed my appointment slot instead. Let that sink in. I explained that this was incredibly unprofessional because I am also a paying client. My money spends exactly the same as a VIP's and I had booked my appointment weeks ahead of time. I was already traveling to NYC when they decided my appointment no longer mattered. I asked whether there would at least be some sort of discount or accommodation for the inconvenience. The manager said she "wasn't sure" because she had to ask a different stylist even though they did not even know yet who that stylist would be. That response alone was baffling. Any compensation should have immediately come from ownership or management, not based on whether another stylist felt like offering something. The manager said she would call me back. I stressed that time was important because I was literally on the train approaching NYC and needed to know whether to get off and continue or turn around and go home. She did not call me back for almost an hour. By the time she finally left a voicemail, I was already pulling into Penn Station. Their "solution" was a complimentary hot oil treatment, which was a service I neither booked nor needed. Again, more inconvenience for me instead of accountability from them. When I finally got to the salon, the manager barely looked me in the face while refunding my deposit. Her attitude felt dismissive and flippant, with zero acknowledgment of the time, money, and effort they wasted. If this is NappStar's normal business practice, bumping clients who booked weeks in advance for VIPs at the last minute, then please spend your money elsewhere. Black women already spend enormous amounts of money maintaining our hair, and salons like this continue to disrespect the very customers who keep them in business. Unfortunate and uncomfortable experience, 3/12/26 I booked a wash + retwist appointment. After examining my hair, the stylist explained that since my locs are interlocked, it would make more sense to do a wash + style instead. I appreciated the recommendation and agreed. She then suggested a style: two-strand twists in the back and barrel twists on top, to "make the interlock look fresh and last." I liked the idea and agreed to that as well. After my wash, the receptionist approached me to pay my balance. The total was lower than the price I originally booked, so I asked about it. I was told the change was due to the stylist's recommendation, so I paid. While I was sitting under the dryer, the stylist and receptionist went into a separate room and closed the door. I could hear an elevated discussion. The stylist eventually came out briefly and pointed to my hair, saying she had twisted it and would style it after the dryer. I was confused but assumed everything was fine. Shortly after, the receptionist came out and explained that there had been a misunderstanding about the charge. He said I would now need to pay the original price plus an additional $70 styling fee. Although I was confused about what had changed, I told him that I was willing to pay whatever the correct amount was. They returned to the room again to continue discussing it. At one point the stylist came out, pointed toward me while speaking to the receptionist, and went back into the room. The receptionist came out again to re-explain the new charge. I again reiterated that although I didn't fully understand what was happening, I was willing to pay whatever was owed. When the stylist came to get me from the dryer, she seemed visibly annoyed. She began the barrel twists on top and at one point asked where I wanted them to stop. I showed her where I preferred. When she finished the top portion, my hair was still loose in the back. She then asked if I still wanted the two-strand twists. I said yes, because I assumed that was the style we had already discussed and that the additional charge covered. She called another stylist over and they finished the back very quickly. Immediately afterward, she moved on to another client and told me I was done and that I could go. I left feeling extremely uncomfortable. The entire situation stemmed from internal miscommunication about pricing and recommendations that were initiated by the salon, not by me. Despite repeatedly agreeing to pay whatever the correct charge was, the tone of the interaction made me feel as though I had done something wrong. I have never felt more unwelcome in a business. Today was my second visit to Nappstar in Baltimore. I am so happy that they remained consistent. My initial visit was great and this subsequent visit was even better. Audacious (Auda) styled my hair EXACTLY how I requested. She has an obvious passion for hair and I am so happy I was paired with her. In fact as I looked around everyone's hair was beautiful. My experience was stressful and disappointing. Initially I was attracted to the unique repair, rebuild and extension process they advertise. I have a few stubborn locs that I wanted to tend to. So I booked a consultation and was told what was possible. This information during the consult was not communicated to the stylist. It was very apparent. I arrive for my appointment and the stylist was still doing someone else's hair. After 15mins of my appointment time, she stops to do my hair. You can tell when someone doesn't want to do your hair or they don't agree with what it happening. I tried to remain optimistic but overall I felt like an inconvenience and when I made mention of my displeasure of the service to the stylist, she basically ignored and dismissed my concern and eventually moved on to finish what she was doing when I arrived. I know Im just another customer to the salon but my locs mean a lot to me. I wish I was given the effort, time and attention that others seem to get but I wasn't. After this the manager came to fix what the stylist wouldn't consider redoing but only to be reassured that they could fall out. Which made me question everything. At this point I just wanted to leave right away. So I paid and left. I would hate for anyone to be treated like I was so I can't recommend this place. The work looks amazing but beneath the hype the energy is chaotic and the tension between management and the stylists is very apparent. There were no long-term reviews when I purchased my set so I wanted to make sure I left a review as most reviews here are when customers FIRST get the hair and not after time. I purchased this set on June 22 and went to the official Nappstar location in Atlanta to get it installed. The first day, it looked amazing. I couldn't tell that they were extensions. After retwist #2, I knew something wasn't right. The extensions were still stiff and hard to style, and locs started to slip out. However, I believed that that was normal and bought a small bundle just in case I lost more. I have used all 50 of the small bundles. I only installed 42 locs! In the two years I've maintained this style, my loctician and I have realized that this hair is NOT 100% human hair and definitely not continuous pieces of hair loc'd together. It appears to be afro hair crocheted together. Even with professional monthly maintenance, this hair is literally crumbling away and disintegrating right in front of our eyes, and the amount of money I have spent on loc repairs has been ridiculous. I was excited about this brand/company, only to feel misled and disappointed. I was under the impression that this was a black-owned business and trusted that I was in "good hands". It hurts more when it's your own that manipulates and lies for profit. read more

They did a GREAT JOB on my hair & I have sensitive scalp/locs. She washed my hair three times, deep conditioned my roots and used very light gel on my retwist. I was there longer than I've ever been anywhere for a retwist... But at least I can say the service was done in excellence. I would definitely go back, but be mindful to not make any solid plans for that day. There's a closet for your coat and you get a basket for your purse or belongings. They ask you to wash your hands upon arrival, which as I appreciate. This appointment was scheduled three weeks prior with a $150 deposit - My appointment was 9:30 am - Needless to say the management failed in all aspects- it was 1:30 pm and the hair had not been "delivered" - they had me sitting under a hair dryer for almost two hours without advising me that they had no hair to install - my hair was re twisted and dry and they proceeded to undo my ends to install extensions which they didn't even have !! This place was ultimately a no for me, but it wasn't all bad. Their online appointment system is easy to use and professional. My appointments have always started on time and my loctitians have been friendly and courteous. This gets 2 stars from me because of a few things: 1. They use synthetic hair for loc repairs but claim it is human hair. It's clearly not. 2. They charge extra for appointments if you have over about 120 locs, which is a pretty low bar as far as locs go. 3. They are expensive in general. 4. They are constantly recording content for their social media. Once I had to wait 10 minutes during an appointment for my stylist (and all staff) to record a dance video for Tiktok or Instagram. Wtf. 5. There is a man who works there who is always going up and down the store sticking his phone in people's faces. I was really excited to give this place a try after I saw it while walking in Hampden in Baltimore. I made an appointment for 3pm on a Saturday, which I thought was fine because I made an appointment. Sadly, it didn't really matter. I got checked in but it took awhile for me to even get shampooed. I noticed the owner kept taking walk-ins, which kept messing up the timing with the stylists because it's LOCS not HAIRCUTS. As I looked around, I also saw other people waiting long times to get washed, styled or even checked in. I thought my stylist, Ebony, was personable, nice and offered a cute style I never had before, but the wait and over the top pricing soured my experience. I have half a head of locs and didn't leave until a little over three hours after my original appointment time. I've been toying with the idea of getting locs for years, and finally started doing the research and looking for local salons during the quarantine. Of the places I looked at, NappStar had the best social media engagement by far, and an easy to navigate website that covered all my questions regarding services and pricing. Their appointment slots filled quickly (another good sign), so I set my starter loc appointment over a month in advance, including sample pictures of the size I wanted and paying the required deposit to secure my spot. When I came in for my appointment, the salon took all the appropriate precautions for COVID. my temperature was taken, and I was immediately asked to wash my hands. The salon was spotless, and whenever someone changed seats, the chair they had been in was immediately sprayed down and sanitized. I was also serviced quickly -- no long wait times, which I've grown accustomed to with most salons. Scarlet was my stylist, and she did a FANTASTIC job on my hair, installing 104 starter locs and then twisting my hair into a low maintenance style that I can wear until my next retwist. She explained how to care for my hair and answered all my questions. I immediately set an appointment before leaving and I'm looking forward to returning and continuing on my loc journey with this salon!
