It is with a heavy heart that I write this less than stellar review. I have been a patron of Nappstar since January 2019. While the services are expensive, I enjoyed my experience at the salon and the styles that I received throughout my loc journey. Every time I went to Nappstar, I received compliments on my hair style. In February 2022, I mistakenly made two appointments, for dates six days apart, one appointment on February 22 and one on February 28. I attended my appointment on February 22 without incident. On February 26, I received an email reminder from Nappstar about an upcoming appointment on February 28th. On February 26, I called Nappstar at the number listed on their website and IG page in an attempt to explain my error and reschedule my appointment to a date in March and I was unable to reach anyone. I sent a text message as the voice-mail encourages explaining the situation at 10 am and received no response. Nappstar is closed on Sundays so I did not attempt to contact them on February 27. This morning on February 28th at 8:52 am, I called Nappstar again at the number provided and received no response. I reached out to them via their IG page and left them a message stating that there was a mistake on my part and I want to reschedule the appointment. Once again, I received no response. At 9:10 am on February 28th I received a call from the receptionist inquiring about my ETA and I explained my situation to her. This call was made from a different number than the one that is listed on the business website. She said that she was going to reach out to the manager and call me back. Shortly afterwards, I received the following text message: "Hey Rana! Unfortunately we wouldn't be able to reschedule the appointment due to cancellation policy. Your appointment will have to be canceled and your $50 security deposit will be processed as a cancellation fee." I responded in kind, stating that I was disappointed. I then called back because I didn't want my concerns to fall on deaf ears due to the previous history of unresponsiveness from the number I was texting and expressed disappointment and asked to speak to a manager. I was informed by the receptionist that the manager is Scarlett and that she was not in yet. I was shocked to learn that Scarlett responded to my request in this fashion because she styled my hair on the 22nd. I asked that Scarlett call me when she got in and I received this text message a short time later: "We see you reached outside of our customer service teams hours. In order to have your deposit applied as a salon credit you would have had to reach out by the 20th. We do understand the mistake, unfortunately we have very strict cancellation policies." I couldn't have possibly canceled by the 20th because I didn't realize that I double booked until the 26th. For the the first time in my almost three years of being a patron at this salon, I made an honest mistake and the response from Nappstar is very disappointing. We are all humans and mistakes happen. The lack of grace for an regular patron is disturbing. As a patron, I have extended grace to Nappstar on multiple occasions because things happen (late stylists, busy and booked salon resulting in wait times of 30-45 mins, inconsistent water temperature at the shampoo bowl, etc.). I can't seem to understand why in a situation where a clear mistake has been made, the same grace can't be extended to me. Anyway, I wish Nappstar continued success going forward but the $50 deposit that they kept as a result of a mistake is the last of my hard earned money that they will receive from me. read more

I was really excited to give this place a try after I saw it while walking in Hampden in Baltimore. I made an appointment for 3pm on a Saturday, which I thought was fine because I made an appointment. Sadly, it didn't really matter. I got checked in but it took awhile for me to even get shampooed. I noticed the owner kept taking walk-ins, which kept messing up the timing with the stylists because it's LOCS not HAIRCUTS. As I looked around, I also saw other people waiting long times to get washed, styled or even checked in. I thought my stylist, Ebony, was personable, nice and offered a cute style I never had before, but the wait and over the top pricing soured my experience. I have half a head of locs and didn't leave until a little over three hours after my original appointment time. It's really nice inside and I'm sure they have all the parts to be successful but it was my first and last time going. read more

This is my go-to place for loc care and maintenance. All of the stylists are friendly and supportive. I get compliments about my style and of course my hair is growing. I also buy their products. You will not be disappointed. read more

I've been in NY 10 mos now and I didn't think I would ever find my home salon. Welp I will look no further. The staff are friendly, the music is poppin' and my hair looks fire! I do want to say I was about 24 minutes late and the grace period is 30 mins. With this being said, I've been a lot of places where I'm 10 mins late and greeted with attitude! Not this staff they treated me as if I was not only on time but early! NappStar has really exceeded my expectations (I'm picky!) and this is my home salon as long as I reside in NYC! If you have locs, hell even if you don't their faux locs are indistinguishable anyway, don't look any further. THIS IS IT! Thanks for making my Day! read more

First time here I might come back since it's the closest location to where I live. I will say first impressions are everything and didn't really feel welcomed when I first walked in. Weird energy and barely got a hi. Also, there wasn't enough space for ppl waiting and there needs to be a better system to track who comes in first. There was a woman who definitely arrived 15 minutes after me that got her hair washed before mine. That rubbed me the wrong way and even my hair stylist had to mention something to the woman who skipped me. Might give it another shot but please communicate in advance if it's a long wait so I can make adjustments to my schedule . I'm big on energy and hospitality so might think about. 3 rating is for my hairstylist who did a fab job! But this place needs to step up their customer service read more

I paid for instant locs (crochet locs) and they all came out. I called and asked for a resolution. I didn't even ask for a full refund -- just a partial refund. I spoke to Christina who said she would look into it. However, I never heard back. They ignored my calls and e-mails. This company has poor customer service and they don't do the job they promised. So... Be warned -- the crochet locs will come out! They will IGNORE you if you ask for help after. They just take your money. And the service is expensive considering I didn't get what I paid for. read more

I had a wonderful experience in Baltimore. Ebony work is the best when it came to my re-twist .

Service is fantastic but very very pricy. I mean they are located in Manhattan and a lot of employees but when I was charged 178 NOT INCLUDING my 50 dollar deposit I was floored. Especially when they said my style would be around 110 in total. Locs are expensive but Geesh. And my first time going so I was slightly overwhelmed with the amount of people. I think I prefer a more intimate setting. read more

Let's start by saying that I started my love journey about 4 weeks ago. Decided to get a re twist just could locate a salon. Saw a post on IG and decided to make an appointment. Today I had an appointment at Nappstar in Baltimore. When I tell you it was the best experience. I've had my locs for 4 years and never been to a loctation. FINALLY I MADE IT!!! I traveled all the way from Cali to get my hair done. I had two delayed flights so I missed my first appointment, but I booked for the next day. I've been following them on IG for awhile now and I'm so excited to be getting my retwist done. From the time I walked in it was all GOOD VIBES. The wash was amazing and Rosine (I think that's how you spell it) is the fastest ever, literally was done in like 35 minutes. The service was PERFECT and I can't wait to come back!!!! Love seeing our people winning!!! Now y'all just need a location in LA :) read more

Groovy day Yelpers. So it had been about 3 months since my last appointment with my regular hair dresser and I wasn't sure what to do. My daughter suggested this place so I decided to give it a try adding "they are very professional ". She sent me the link https://www.nappstar.com/. To be clear, I have had locks for over 25 years and I can do them myself if necessary so having just anyone do my hair wasn't an option. You can open the link from your laptop or mobile device which was cool. The first thing you want to do is choose which salon location (NYC or ATL) to book your appointment at. Next you can select between a variety of services including consultation, classes, and loc retwist services depending upon preference (I.e. comb or crotchet). I chose comb Retwist since I had no idea what crotchet was. Not too mention the prices are very expensive and shampoo was not included. I chose the comb Retwist and pipe cleaner service. One thing to note here, if you are used to going to Mom and Pop locticians, there will be price sticker shock but I will say it is worth it if you can find the extra in your budget. Once you determine service and date you pay your deposit ($100) to lock in your appointment and you are all set! They also send you text and email reminders leading up to your appointment. Please note that timeliness is respected here. There is a grace period but it's best to shoot for early than on time. The day I had my appointment someone was struck by a subway train which delayed my trip. I called the salon and the host was really understanding. Thankfully I arrived with 15 minutes of my time and the grace period is within 30 minutes of your appointment. From the time I walked in and checked in with reception, I felt right at home. I was instructed to wash my hands and escorted to the wash station where I was greeted by the nicest washer Simone who was extremely sweet and asked me first whether I was tender headed which I really appreciated. Her hands were like magic and I felt really pampered. My stylist Napier was listed as a junior stylist but there was nothing Junior about her! She was very welcoming and I was able to relax as she separated and twisted my roots. One thing to note if it has been a long while between hair appointments consider the Apple cider vinegar rinse. I requested the scalp treatment but was told the Apple cider rinse would have been better to address my build up. I will be sure to do that next time. Pro tip when you arrive I recommend that you inform the host about what you request as the communication up front is not the best. Since my washer was not informed I never received my intended scalp treatment . Thankfully it was taken off my bill but I would like to have experienced that. In any case, good service merits a good tip. The same works for great service. Both really took time with my hair giving it the care it deserved. I tipped both my stylist and washer at a little under 18% which is standard. Attending Napstar was a treat truly and I will be sure to come back . read more

So I had a great experience getting my locs installed but there were a few problems after the fact. Spent almost $2000 for the install and another close to $500 for a retwist... I had to cut them off after 3 months. I don't know what happened during my retwist, but my scalp was on fire for the remainder of the time I had my locs in until I cut them off. I mean I would scratch my scalp and there'd be blood or pus under my nails. I think maybe the comb was dirty, or an allergic reaction to what should've been natural products? The service was courteous for sure, but the scalp sores, pus and scabs with me having to cut my hair off is why I wouldn't recommend anyone to this place. Hopefully they figure that out. read more

Annette, please be mindful of the staff that you hired. Especially, the lady at the front desk her attitude is very atrocious and unprofessional. I booked the appointment at approximately 12pm, if your salon is busy on a Friday, your staff should've never let us come in. I made an appointment on August 16, 2024, to get my son's hair done, it was a starter LoC. I arrived at 2:30 pm, my son was seen at 2:40 pm for the wash and his hair never started until 3:40 pm, and at 6:53 pm we were still there. We were then approached by the lady at the front desk asking for me to check out early,I told her that I rather to wait because at this moment i wasn't please with my son's hair. The stylist had no idea as to what to do and she had to call her coworker for help. If the other stylist never did, "KIND OF"a better job (Im still not impressed) with my son's hair, I WOULD HAVE NEVER spent $418!!!! You are sooo expensive but yet still you hired staff with no manners and the stylist can't do starter locs. You would have to call the cops on me if that other coworker never kinder tried to style my son's hair. The lady at the front desk was nasty, when I told her that I wasn't gonna do an early check out bc I had to see the style of my son's hair before I pay my money. I explained how I felt and she just walked away like I was a nobody, that was rude and I will definitely let everyone know about my experience. DISGUSTED!!! Disappointed for a company that of all them clients but nasty workers and stylists who don't know what to do!!!! read more

Great service and my hair is bomb. I would be be back and im bringing my son with me.

Be wary about letting unfamiliar stylists style your locs. I added a baking soda and ACV rinse to my NappStar appointment, and the pictures below were the result when my hair dried. When I returned the next day to complain, the management tried to claim I had lint in my hair, which was not true at all. Popular brands do not equal better brands. read more

great service price and qualit. my hair came out beautiful and look healthy!!!! I will definitely be back and back again.

I booked an appointment on July 30th for a comb retwist with the Marley twist over my locs. Paid a $50 deposit. Prior to me booking this appointment, I had a conversation via email with Mimi to discuss what I wanted because I wasn't sure what to book the style under or if the salon even offered the style. I sent her pictures of my locs, we had a whole conversation about what I want, pricing, etc. When I booked the appointment, I booked a comb retwist with a style (with stylist Kay). I added to the notes when booking my appointment that I had a conversation with Mimi and I will be doing the Marley twist. Fast forward to Saturday, 8/17, I sent another email asking about the time duration of my appointment so that I can set a time for something else I had going on. I just wanted to know about how long it would take. The response I got was that the stylist that I booked with wasn't going to be able to do my hair because of the way I booked my appointment, I guess I was suppose to book the Marley twist to block out the proper amount of time. I can own that mistake, I did go back on the website and see that there was a whole other section just for that, which I didn't see. However, I spoke to Mimi prior to booking to ask these questions and that wasn't specifically indicated. Also, when was anybody going to contact me and let me know what I booked it wrong and adjustments need to be made? Because it was specified in the notes of my booking, exactly what I was coming for. So if somebody read the note and realized I booked it wrong, wouldn't it make sense for somebody to call or email me? So now we're at the day of my appointment, I still go because it's the day before my trip and I have no choice, I started my loc journey at napp star and continue going for a year until I changed my stylist to someone closer to home. So I wasn't too concerned, I went anyways. I get there and I am washed and retwisted by 1 stylist, she was great, but she let me know what somebody else will do the Marley twist. Fine. When she finished, Scarlett brought me over to another chair and let me know that she is going to show another stylist what to do and have her do my hair. Fine. She did about 3 of the Marley twist and let the other stylist take over. I'm not going to lie, it was not coming out right, it looked totally different from what Scarlett did. So I stopped her, called Scarlett back over and let her know I'll just wait for the girl who did my wash and retwist to finish her client and have her do finish my hair. It's not fair to me or the stylist, it was obviously her very first time doing the Marley twist and she only got thrown into it because there was an appointment booking issue. So I wasn't even mad at her, wasn't her fault. Also, it's not fair to me because I want my hair done correctly. I just wanted to bring this to your attention because it's unfortunate that all of this is happening and I'm paying over $400 for a style. I got to the salon at 11:20 for my 11:45 appointment, I was brought to the bowl right away to be washed. I walked out of the salon at 6:29PM on the dot. That's 7 hours for something that should have taken maybe 4 hours because I have thick locs and I only have 57 locs. This was a very bad and unprofessional experience, I was SO drained and upset about this entire experience. read more

Visited Nappstar Baltimore earlier on and everything went smooth till the last 20 minutes. Stylist couldn't achieve the look I wanted and instead had the audacity to tell me my hair was too short for the style. My 3rd time at NappStar and left satisfied and happy every time. We moved from Jersey to Maryland and this time I drove 3hrs to get my hair done at NappStar because I knew they would get me right, and yes, the drive was definitely worth it. The shop is clean, and the staff is friendly, professional, and always pleasant. The owner, Annette, treats her staff with respect, and she even helps them with their customers' hair. She makes sure her customers are comfortable and not sitting around waiting. She jumps in and helps her staff so that everyone is done in a timely fashion. I want going to write this review, but after a whole lot of thinking about it. We'll let start by saying it took my over a year to even make the appointment because I've had too many Bad Loctians. First I had a consultation with a young lady She was very informative and explained to me what needed to be done. I booked my appointment for a crochet retwist and repairs. I was quoted 600+ ok. I had no problem with that because I really wanted my locs done properly. Well on the day of my appointment I was told another loctian would be doing my hair ,ok with that. The women was nice , I made it Very clear how past loctian never fixed my hair properly and I was very uneasy. She reassured me that she will DO RIGHT BY ME!!! I brought my own locs and kinky hair I was told! He had me pay 30 for there hair (ok with that) Other stylish was coming by taking some until she told the I purchased that. Well long story short she recommended that I get pipe cleaner ok cute, but that wasn't even the problem the problem was She kept saying She's not worried about the money and No I wasn't long as it's done Properly!!! The PROBLEM WHEN I GOT HOME TOOK OUT THE PIPE CLEANERS I COULD SEE THE LOCS THAT WAS "REPAIRED WAS ADDED TO THE ENDS OF MY HAIR AND THERE WAS 3 LOCS I HAD POINTED OUT TO HER BECAUSE OF THE PAST LOCTIANS!! THEY WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE HAIR THAT WAS ADDED TO MY CROCHET ROOTS HAD STARTED COMING OUT AND NOW IT CAUSING MORE DAMAGE TO MY HAIR. I HAVE SOME read more

I started my loc journey in January at Nappstar. It was really quick. Everyone was really friendly and professional. Your temperature is taken right away, then you are asked to wash your hands in the restroom. After you return and register, your stylist approaches you. I haven't had a long wait yet. I've been a total of three times (2 retwists) after my locs. I like to make my way and experience as many of the stylists until I find my fit. So far, I've had my hair styled by 3 and each were nice and professional. Will definitely keep going for retwists until my hair locs or I feel comfortable retwisting on my own. read more

Went to Nappstar for my first retwist and traveled from LI. My appointment was originally in the afternoon but the styles it contacted me to push back for a personal matter and instead we moved it up to accommodate both of us. Although we communicated through text I could not speak to her as much as I wanted to because she only spoke French. However the other stylists in the shop was extremely helpful and I was able to get exactly what I wanted from the appointment. My only issue was the lack of communication. Appointments book fast so if you want to make one do it sooner than later because that slot might not be open by than. read more

Today I was very surprised my bill was 218 in total and 167  with the Deposit included.  I was late today and a $50  fee was added.  I have been a faithful customer for four years or so and never had an issue with my bill. Today I was blind sided by the  extra charges and begged for it to be taking off. (This business is all about a dollar, but there has to be a customer to give one. FWI I was robbed of my wallet and phone which disabled me from reaching you guys to reschedule my last appointment. Upon walk in Kay complained about me not canceling my last appointment. I then went to explain , but she cut me off and said she didn't want to hear it.no concerns of my no show or if I was okay! she just wanted the dollar) Even after explaining to the manager the train delay and my financial situation. She still refused to take it off and told me to figure it out, because they don't allow customers to leave the without paying. She left me with no other choice but to walkout. Kay slay has been late a plethora of times in the early mornings when I booked at the old VIP spot. always something with her sister mother, boyfriend for baby on the way. I was even left standing at the in the hallway until someone showed, no number to speak of and no accommodations, no free style or nothing. I had empathy though. I have even been left waiting in the cold when on time and the shop is still closed, but proceeding with this "great experience"  As I walked to the elevator and the manager Proceeded to ask me are u choosing to leave. I replied yes!! She then screamed to the top of her lungs "he is banded, and Charge his online card." Which she had planned on doing anyway with me leaving or not because she is unprofessional, and lacks true leadership skills, ever time I am in there she is always asking the stylist to do her hair. that should be done in private. Kay then texted me a very disturbing text message that I will be posting on Google review and yelp with the full details of the story.. My experience was disappointing! I didn't make it to a seat. I reached out via IG about booking both my consultation and appointment at the same time. I was told that I could do my consultation virtually and there was a $50 fee. I immediately book my virtual appointment (NY) with no problem. My appointment was scheduled for the next day at 4 pm. Even though, the rep from the NY location reached hours before my appointment to confirm, I still had to contact her (4:15p) to inquire about my appointment. I offered to reschedule my appointment b/c I had another engagement at 4:30p but the NY rep called 2 mins later. When she called, she was eating and already engaging in a conversation. During the virtual "consultation" I was instructed that I should book my appointment and that a consultation would take place during that appointment. Remind you, that my consultation consisted of pricing (and she added a suggested tip amount), retwist methods, and how hair is added. Information I already gathered from the IG page. At this point, I was still okay. However, when I asked if my $50 consultation fee would be subtracted from my appointment, I was told that that fee ONLY applies if you book both consultation and appointment together, which was my ORIGINAL question. I said all of this to say, I feel like I got, got for $50.....lol. I never in my life disputed a charge or written a review, but there is a first time for everything. Honestly, I believe if you book a consultation and decide to book an appointment, the consultation fee SHOULD apply. read more

This is the salon I've been looking for. I've had my hair locked for a little over a year and paranoid about someone messing them up so when I found Nappstar on instagram, I was intrigued. Making an appointment is so easy and they now have an awesome app that has so many useful features- even before and after pics! When you walk in, you'll be greeted by a friendly face and your wait IS NEVER OVER 5-10 mins!!!!! AMAZING! You'll get all sorts of text and email reminders also. The vibe is so pleasant and the space is so clean, organized and decorated in a funky and fresh way. The stylists are all talented and very knowledgeable about natural hair using quality products (Giovanni) and natural oils. My interlocking took half a day but I was over the moon satisfied and it was so worth it. My recent retwist and style was just as great and only took 2 hours (dryer time included) It's less than a 10min walk from Penn Station and there's free WiFi! They only take credit cards and you can add tip on cards if you want too. If you want a natural hair salon that has its game together and run by talented, beautiful people- you're welcome! read more

I got my hair done here on 11/10/23 and it was an excellent experience! I booked Belinda through the website, then I called to ask questions. The receptionist was so helpful, he actually stepped away to get answers to specific questions I asked. He also mentioned there could be added fees on the day of due to hair length and volume. Then on the day of, Belinda made sure to get a second opinion on the price before washing. She wanted to make sure I wasn't surprised with added charges. Then the wash and deep condition (with a steamer) went very well. Belinda gave special attention to my scalp problems. Then when Belinda started parting the boxes for my starter locs, they took a photo of the first two rows and texted it to me so that I can approve the box sizes. Then we confirmed the final price on an iPad, detailing the price of the instant starter locs, loc extensions, then the upcharge for my hair volume (it's super dense and was about 8 inches long). Upon confirming the final price, we proceeded. Belinda gave me such careful attention due to my tender scalp. Backcombing 8 inches of hair took a WHILE, then we added the extensions, and tada! (84 locs total) Everything was very clear and communicative. I will be back! Also, the salon was very clean, beautifully decorated, and well-lit. I even saw each stylist sanitize the sink after each hair wash. Also, Leishya who helped add on the loc extensions was great too! Two additional stylists also volunteered to help when they had downtime. They have such a great team of stylists at this salon. This experience was everything I imagined it would be. 10/10 read more

NappStar is the leading destination for locs in New York. Their new location is stunning and well-lit. The stylists are not only attractive all sporting natural hairstyles, but also highly skilled and professional. They greet you with warmth and make your comfort their top priority. Each stylist is equally gifted and creative. The hosting staff is attentive and ensures your needs are met from the moment you step in until you leave. NappStar is a vibe that's hard to match. As an elderly person, I really miss the days when a stylist would not only style but also educate me by making suggestions about my particular hair. I may have an idea of what I want, but my expectations might not match the reality. The service I requested was a bit aggressive for my hair texture, and may not have been the right choice, but because I have never had it I had no point of reference and an expert adjustment would have been welcomedto. Even if I did not acquiesce with the suggestion, I would have appreciated the expert opinion. read more
