I love Lisa and Sealene! I got my hair styled in Sept 2015 in Havana Twists. I made an appointment for a consultation and met with Sealene who answered all of my questions about pricing, the difference between havana twists vs marley twists, price, length, and color options. She also informed me that the hair is included in the price which is great for me because I don't know the first thing about buying hair. They also offer a six week touchup for the twists. Two days later, I had my appointment at 10 am with Sealene. Sealene was already at the salon and prepping for me which I liked because I hate a late stylist unless they're late for a good reason. Sealene came out and greeted me and asked about my color choices and convinced me as a twists newbie to go with a solid color first to get used to the look before going so bold. I'm glad she told me that because sometimes I tend to dive in head first and I'm really glad I didn't go for a bolder color right off the bat. The color that she used is a bit darker than my natural hair so in a sense I got to experiment with a new color anyway and I love it. Sealene was very easy to talk to and very gentle with my hair. I tried to detangle as much as possible before arriving but Sealene had to blow dry my hair a bit to make it easier to detangle at the roots. As a natural, I'm always concerned with heat but Sealene and Lisa work with natural hair so I trusted her and Sealene used a nice warm heat and not a blaring hot heat so there was no worry of heat damage. I have a head full of hair and Sealene was done in under 3 hours. Lisa came into the salon during my last 45 minutes and I loved her personality just as much as Sealene's. I can see why they make a great team. During the last few minutes, Lisa and Sealene both worked on my hair. I invited my sister to come along to document the process and she was able to get a quick but thorough consultation from Lisa about her waist length locs. My sister and I really enjoyed Lisa and Sealene and now my sister has an appointment scheduled too! The salon is really nice. It's shared with other stylists and everyone in the salon has a really cool vibe. To make an appointment, you have to book online. I think Sealene's name should also be added to the stylists list because in other reviews, people commented that they thought they were going to see Lisa and was surprised when Sealene did their hair. When Sealene turned me around in the closest mirror, I instantly loved my look! And that's saying something since 98.999% of the time, I shy away from any styles that don't use my real hair since it looks unnatural to me. But Sealene used the invisible root method and the ends of the twists are slightly wavy so they look really natural on me. They gave me a maintenance card to let me know how I should maintain my twists at home. Lisa said that I'd get plenty of compliments and I must tell her, "Lisa, you are so right! I've gotten so many compliments and told people where I got them done!" Thanks to Sealene and Lisa, I have a nice protective style that will last for weeks during the hot and drought-stricken California season I'm in and my hair can get a break from the 25 to 38 grains per gallon very hard water I have in Santa Barbara. read more

I actually joined Yelp just to write this review so that others on that dreadful search for good natural haircare can end their search. I'm a college student who has lived in the city for nearly four years now, and in the short time I've lived here I've gone to nearly 6 different hairdressers/salons. From the high-end (*cough* overpriced) services at Khamit Kinks, to the quick-and-dirty hair braiders on 125th, I've seen (almost) it all. Lisa Bailey has provided FAR AND AWAY the most professional, enjoyable, and satisfying salon experience I've had since moving to the city. Since getting Havana twists with Lisa, I have not gone a day without a rando on the street asking about, or complimenting my hair. My edges which had been destroyed by the aforementioned 125th street hair braiders are finally growing back, and my hair is healthier than it has ever been in a protective style. Lisa's salon space is clean, well lit, and super professional. She and her assistant are friendly, warm, and most importantly GREAT at what they do. My deep conditioner and style were complete in 2 hours, and I literally didn't know what to do with myself with all the free time (I can't remember the last time I left a hair salon before nightfall!) I went to Lisa last week Friday, but her daughter completed my havana twists. I was super happy with the way my hair turned out and the overall experience. The salon itself is nice, and the customer service was good as well. Not only did they wash, condition and dry my hair (same price) before braiding, but Saleane also gave me advice on adding a pop of color to my twists, which I love. The prices are higher than most braid places, but you get what you pay for and they do quality work. I would definitely recommend them :) read more

Let me start off by saying the Lisa does fabulous crochet braids but I can not recommend her for haircuts! I have been transitioning to natural hair and had been wearing crochet braids and various protective styles for the last two years in preparation for my big chop. I live overseas and once I found Lisa during one of my visits to NY, I made sure I came to her at her salon whenever I was in town for my crochet braids. She has a natural knack for blending hair colors for a natural look. She does and has done an excellent, excellent, excellent job for all of my crochet braids! I normally like to blend my colors when I put hair in and not all stylist do a good job of that. The only reason I did not give her 5 stars is because I came to Lisa for my big chop and explained to her I wanted to keep the length I attained for versatility in hairstyles. She was aware I was growing my natural hair out from my previous visits and repeated and seemed to understand my request that I only wanted the relaxed portions cut. Despite this pointed communication, she cut just about all length off the back and sides of my hair. As you can imagine, the big chop was a very emotional and momentous occasion for me having had relaxed hair for most of my life. This unwanted haircut put me back to square one with barely enough hair to two strand twist and was pretty devastating for me. Yes, I was very very upset and near tears. To her credit, after I expressed to her my unhappiness with the haircut she did manage to squeeze me in to put in a crochet style before my flight back home and without fault, she lived up to my expectations and gave me a gorgeous afro style complete with color highlights. She definitely cares about the condition and health of your natural hair. However, I could not, in good conscience, recommend her for a haircut for natural hair given my personal experience with her cutting my hair. (There is another stylist in the salon that does excellent cuts but I don't know her name.) read more

I recently got my havana twist done. I love them because they are lightweight and look very natural. Lisa's assistant was the one who completed my hair. She did a great job but I had alot of prominent stray hairs from the twist sticking out. I noticed them when I got home. Despite all this I do like my hair. I took a star off because I booked my appointment with Lisa online and was disappointed when she never came to the appointment. I was never informed that she wasn't coming to the appointment and also that her assistant would be the one completing my hair. In a way kinda felt like a bait and switch situation. I ordered Lisa but got her assistant instead. Lisa if a client books you they should get you. read more

The Havana Twists by Lisa are absolutely gorgeous! The salon that she works from is located in Midtown West and nice enough, where you have the choice of being served coffee and something a little stronger if you so choose...but more importantly, Lisa's technique is impeccable and she is quick. She is a master at her craft and very meticulous, which I like. I purchased the Marley hair beforehand and although she began twisting with it, she decided she did not like the turnout after a few were installed. Perhaps it was the brand of Marley hair? I don't know. So anyway, Lisa convinced me to purchase the Havana hair and gave me a deep discount on it, since I had already purchased the other type prior to. I thought this was very professional and nice of her and I do not regret purchasing the Havana hair one bit. I will also be able to reuse it, which is a plus! The twists are pretty light-weight, although they do appear to be heavy (this, I believe being a crucial difference between the Marley and Havana hair). A note of importance is that there is no stress on your scalp with the twists, and I had no stray twists unraveling or falling out, which braided extensions tend to do at times. I actually had the twists installed in late February, and here we are in mid-May and I STILL continue to receive compliments on my hair. I take care of them and they have held up pretty well. Note: I did have them touched up at the mid-point, maybe in early April and Lisa actually recommends taking the twists down after 12 weeks. I do plan to take them down within the week so my natural hair can breathe. I'll be certain to give my tresses a deep treatment afterwards. I am very impressed with Lisa's work and will be back to have the twists installed at least annually and at a minimum for a "protective style". I highly recommend her for your Havanas. I haven't seen anyone who does them better (she created them)! It is well worth the cost. read more

I went to get Havana twists back in November. I got them done by Lisa's assistant and they look great. I was in the chair for about 4 hours which isn't bad at all, as I have really thick hair and a big head to match. *Shrugs* the salon is super clean and I was offered hot tea, I felt very relaxed and I talked about HTGAWM with the stylist. As I was leaving, Lisa herself was coming in for the day and I love her energy, she seemed really nice and even complimented the color of the sweater I was wearing. She started my hair when Lisa was running late...at first I was nervous because I wanted Lisa but I was quickly humbled by how beautiful my twists turned out. My hair lasts at least 10 weeks. Bless this salon. Bless Sealene's quick and magical fingers. I was scheduled to get Havana twists done and Sealene did them by herself in about 2 and a half hours. I have never experienced such a thing! I was worried about the prices, but you get what you pay for. I have lupus and a couple bald spots on my head and Sealene was able to cover them discreetly with my own hair and the extra hair. The other people in the salon were friendly and they had good music playing with the air conditioner running. I recommend to anyone who is tired of waiting 1+ hour for their stylist to see them/start working on them (even with an appointment). I will definitely be coming back here. read more

Night and day from my first experience here which super bummed me out since I live in CA now and planned this a month in advance for my jam-packed visit to NY. My appointment was for 11am and I knew when I booked that this time was going to be semi-painful since I was both coming from Queens and on West Coast time. But they insisted this was the only time they had and that I couldn't come later. Ugh, fine. So I woke up at the equivalent of 6am my time to get there at 11am Eastern on a Saturday. When I walked in I was told they were running a half an hour behind. Seriously? Their website says you cant be more than 15 minutes late...and they actually didn't seat me until 12:07pm (!) So inconsiderate and disappointing and this place is NOT cheap. Oh and I wasn't offered a discount or anything for that hour out of my day - that I didn't have to give. My lack of tip took care of that. The stylists are good but, professionalism is professionalism. read more

Just wanted to say that Lisa Bailey is the Queen of Havana Twists, Just left Serenity. I had to get my hair redone after going to another stylist that false advertises her skills. If you want quality professional classy results stay away from the impostures. The only reason I ventured out was due to my own scheduling conflicts. My Havana twists are down to my waist and it was done in 3 1/2 hours unbelievable . The twists are all the same size and look like they are growing out of my scalp. My experience at this salon with stylist Lisa Bailey was by far the worst experience I've had at a salon thus far. It all started when I started looking into Havana Twists. I came across Lisa's work on Yelp and proceeded to schedule a free consultation to discuss questions I had and to get her advice to see if the twists were a good idea for my hair specifically. I made the consultation on a Tuesday at 11am. I live in Brooklyn so I made sure I left a little earlier to get to the city on time. I was there around 10:50, perfect timing. The other stylists in the salon asked who i was there to see and said Lisa would be there soon. I didn't have a problem waiting for a little bit, so I read some magazines and looked around patiently. However, after reading 4 magazines cover to cover, i started to get a little irritated. Then a young girl came up to me, plopped down and told me she was Lisa's assistant. She asked me what i was there for and i expressed my concerns about the twists and that i wanted to talk to Lisa to get her "expert" advice. The girl asked for what specific questions i had and TRIED to answer them. She gave very blanketed answers and I could tell she really didn't know what she was talking about. Then, after she gave me horrible answers, she tried to get me to leave without even seeing Lisa. Mind you, it was already after 12pm. Around 12:45pm or so, Lisa walked in and asked if I was there to see her. She did not apologize for being late and conducted the "consultation" in a very unprofessional manner. She didn't walk me to her station, didn't sit down with me, barely even touched my hair. I'm not sure how you can have a successful consultation if you don't know the type of hair you're working with, do you? However, even after all of that, I still made an appointment to have the twists done, I'm not exactly sure why i did in hindsight. The appointment was made for the following Thursday at 10 am. I had to go to work at 1pm so timing was for sure a huge factor and i was worried she was going to be late again, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and hoped she would be there on time. I arrived early again, and ONCE AGAIN she was ridiculously late. I let her know in advance about my work schedule so she knew that time was of the essence. At around 10:30am i texted her to let her know i was there no-so-patiently waiting for her. Her rude assistant was there and proceeded to "get me started". To me that means wash and condition and maybe section my hair so it's ready for Lisa. But after she did that, she STARTED TWISTING MY HAIR!! I made an appointment with Lisa, not an assistant. And on top of that, my sister came with me so i could hear her opinion. The assistant was really rude to her and basically shoo-d her away every time she came over. I wanted small to medium sized twists and, although i expressed that to her a million times, she still made them huge. I asked her questions during about the technique she was using and the products (which she used sparingly and NOT consistently at all) and again, she gave me half-assed, blanket answers. LISA WAS STILL NOT THERE. The rude assistant finished over a third of my head before Lisa showed up after 12pm. Again, SHE DIDN'T APOLOGIZE FOR BEING LATE. She finished my hair, I hated it but put on a decent face, I paid and walked out. That night i cut out the twists. They were horrible. Not at all what I wanted and expected from "the great Lisa Bailey". I only suggest going to this stylist if you want to wait over 2 hours past your appointment time, the assistant doing your hair, bullshit responses to your concerns and questions and a horrible hairstyle against your wishes. If I could give her 0 stars, I would in a heartbeat. read more

I have been to this salon a total of 4 times. Each time for Havana Twist (twice for full set and twice for touch up). First time I went, I made an appointment with Lisa. Both Lisa and Sealene were at the salon when I arrived. Sealene sat me in her chair. I thought she was getting me started because Lisa said she was going out to get lunch. However, she didn't come back until hot water was being applied to the ends. She then talked with me about how to care for the hair and style it. Two weeks later, I was not happy with the way my hair looked. The front edges looked like the twist had slipped and were frizzy and fuzzy. I contacted the salon. Sealene informed me that because this was a "natural style," this was the look they were suppose to have. She informed me that roots were loose because of new growth. Really? In two weeks, my hair grew over an inch? Regardless, I made an appointment again and asked for Lisa to have this part redone. I returned to salon and Lisa redid the areas I was concerned about. This time it lasted a bit longer. I returned to the salon to have my twist re-installed after several weeks. Lisa again did my hair. The style lasted about 6 weeks before I needed a touch up. I again made an appointment with Lisa but when I arrived she was not at the salon. Sealene did not say hello when I walked in. She was running 20-30 minutes late finishing up another client. No apology or an "I'll be right with you," was given. When I sat on her chair, I asked her if she could do a few more sections at the crown of the head because those areas were exposed and my roots were really bad. She said "No, we don't do that." I told her I was willing to pay more than the regular touch up price and she said no because that would be like getting new twist. Ok......She then went on to use a rat tail comb to literally pull at my natural hair and proceeded to repeatedly text while doing my hair. Needless to say, I was again not happy how my hair looked a couple of weeks after leaving the salon. I decided to remove the twist and do another protective style. If I do get Havana twist again, I will not return to the salon. I feel like when I make an appointment with a specific stylist, I expect to have that person work on my hair. Otherwise, why give the customer the option? As for the positives of the salon, it was always very clean. Lisa and the other people there seemed very kind. Additionally, scheduling an appointment online was easy and convenient. read more

I am SOOO HAPPY with my new hairstyle. Let me tell you, THIS is the spot! Lisa is SO professional yet SO down to earth! I went for my consultation 2 weeks before my hair appointment. I was greeted with a smile by the receptionist and offered some water...IN A REAL GLASS (yes that's important). I was then greeted by a lovely young lady who checked out my current hair, asked me what i wanted to do, and gave me the price. Lisa then came to introduce herself. I swear it was like we've known each other forever (SO down to earth). She was so pleasant to talk to and I knew Id be happy with my new do. When i went to get my hair done i called because i would be late, when i got there i was immediately shown over to the sinks to wash my hair and then Lisa worked on my new twists after my hair was dried. I swear this is the fastest anyone has ever done my hair. This is where the "SO Professional" part came from...she was tending only to me...this was SO IMPORTANT, I've been to so many places where my stylist came in late or stopped in the middle to do other peoples hair, i even went to a woman many years ago who stopped to EAT. So the fact that Lisa really focused on me was amazing. Oh by the way, during my consultation she said it would take 1.5hrs to do and that was EXACTLY how long it took. While she was doing my hair, we chatted a bit. It was such a nice experience. I will definitely be back. Lisa Bailey is simply the best. I love the straight sleek look she created for me. Lisa's weave technique is really masterful (no tightness or pulling), and results in a slamming magazine worthy style. She's also totally hair care savvy (gave me lots of good tips on taking care of my dry scalp) and really takes the time to answer any questions or concerns you might have. This review is long over do. I got havana twists in September of this year and I loved them! This is my third time going to Lisa and her assistant Celine. I love the warm vibes I get from them. Lisa and Celine both seem to have growing hands whenever I take my twists out my edges are still in tact and my hair is healthy and definitely shows growth. I'd definitely recommend them. Celine completed my hair this time and I loved it (she is so gentle) it took a little over 3 hours and I was able to put my hair up the same day which never happens when I go else where. I was referred to Lisa by a colleague and she's one stylist especially for those of us with natural hair who knows what she's talking about. She is reasonable priced and not as expensive as other natural hair salons/stylists. She basically "diagnosed" my scalp and hair and told what was needed to maintain/encourage hair length and have a healthy scalp. Answered all my questions and concerns about getting the Havana twist hair (they are not braids do you research) style which was quite fast and simple unlike braids where you spent hours in the chair. The Havana twist process itself took 1.5 - 2 hours. I was a bit hestitant b/c it did remind me of Janet Jackson braids from Poetic Justice. After reassurance from Lisa, I got the small set of twists and I love the hairstyle. Have been receiving complimentsever since I got the new 'do. And I'll definitely will be back for my first wash of the set and will be referring friends too. Lisa does excellent work!! read more

For the past two days, I had been walking around NYC looking like Boo Boo the fool people. Thank goodness I was able to find Lisa. 1) She squeezed me in at the last minute. I called her around 2:30p with my dramatic hair story and by 3:30p I was sitting in her chair! 2) She has the most pleasant personality. 3) Lisa KNOWS HAIR. She has a wealth of knowledge on how hair works (and doesn't work) and shares freely how to properly CARE for your hair. Many people know how to "do" hair, but I don't know many stylist who truly know how to care for hair, like on a molecular level. I actually gave Lisa a long dissertation today about how SHE needs to be on YouTube educating all of us Naturalistas. 4) This woman hooked me up for real for real. I look and feel like a million bucks AND she didn't charge me an arm and a leg to fix my weave (I'm protective styling for the winter)! I don't ever ever ever do yelp reviews because no ones service is ever this disappointing, distasteful and classless for me to write anything about but this experience by far has been the worst I have ever had. I stumbled upon Lisa Bailey a couple of years ago when my little sister first decided to go to her to get her hair done. Based on seeing my little sisters hair several times and the wonderful effort this woman put in to her work I was amazed and constantly contemplated getting my hair done. After weeks of researching her, speaking with my sister, and looking at pictures of her work I thought who better to do my hair than Lisa Bailey herself. Excited and nervous at the same time to get my hair done today I took the plunge but instead of leaving feeling satisfied and amazed by the beauty of my new do I felt nothing but disappointment and cheated. Upon arriving at the salon after taking off of work early I had to wait 40 minutes past my appointment time finding two people ahead of me in her chair. Finally when it was time for me to do my hair I was not greeted by Lisa Bailey but her daughter who took me to sit in another chair. I figured her daughter/assistant would start my hair and she would finish so I explained what I wanted done and she started my hair. About half way through getting my hair done I realized Lisa was finished with both clients that were ahead of me and she didn't seem to be moving in my direction. Lisa Bailey never even came over and asked me how I was seeing that I was a first time client, how I liked the service so far, or even if what was being done was what I wanted. She stayed cleaning her station, talking, and walking around.Then I realized she got comfortable, chit chatting with another hairstylist talking about colonics, weight loss, men trouble and the works. Seemed like she seemed to be more interested in the hairstylist life than even coming to attend to me the paying customer. I was so disgusted by the level of service I received and to add insult to injury my hair was done poorly and I was charged charged the same price as someone who used Lisa's hair she provided if requested. Her site mentioned that she charged $175 for people who brought in there own hair and wanted it medium size and bra or below length but although I brought my own hair, got it medium size length, and a little below bra length it added up to be $285. Haven't seen Lisa yet, she hasn't even place her hands on my edges. When asked why I was charged that price, I was told that regardless of if you bring the hair or not you are charged that set price. Had I know that I would have let her use Lisa's hair and took my hair back to the store. No where that I have ever gone have I been treated this way. I am shocked, disappointment, and just a little angry that this experience turned out this way. Needless to say I would never recommend her services to anyone. Celebrities or not you just don't treat people like this. read more
