Okay, so let me start with the pertinent information: the food. Both times I went here in the same week every person at the table ordered the exact same thing because we were so incredibly happy with the quality of the food! I had the steak and eggs, which was an amazingly generous portion and cooked perfectly and priced well. My wife had the crab cakes Benedict, which were equally impressive. My father-in-law had the pancakes (first time they were out of blueberries) and seemed to really enjoy them. My mother-in-law had the seafood omelete, of which I can only say that it tasted like seafood and an omelet, so if you're into that then you would love it too. My brother-in-law (of whom you will hear more later) had the fish tacos since we got seated at eleven the second time and he wasn't with us the first time. We also tried the cheese grits since we had grown accustomed to Gouda grits in this area, but they were just normal grits with a combo of less interesting cheeses, so we only ordered that the first time. I don't hold that against them, though, because the food that came with our meals was more than enough both times! I can also say that they had some of the best biscuits I've had at a restaurant, which I did not expect down in Florida.
Okay, so, food is great, easily four stars great. Prices are very reasonable, so 4.5 stars easy. The reason this place gets the low ranking of 5 stars is the service. Don't get me wrong, it depends on the waitress. Our first waitress was amazing. Even with our unnecessarily complicated drink preferences of waters with no ice and an extra mug of hot water to dilute coffee and sweet tea with ice, she never missed a beat. Our food came out really fast, and the waitress was attentive to everything on the table. In addition to that, she was also really nice and patient even when a certain person at my table was less than polite about the strength of the coffee.
The second time we went we got seated at another waitress' table. She was tall, thin, tan, and had really long hair. I give the physical description so you will know what to expect if you're seated in her section. We didn't see her for a very long time. When we did see her and put in our drink orders, another waitress brought our drinks and we waited for our waitress to come take our order. That took a good deal of time. Once our order was placed, we waited literally over 50 minutes (my wife and I time these things because, well, we like food and good service) before getting annoyed enough to say anything. Sadly, my brother-in-law decided to take out his frustration on the incredibly nice waitress we had the first time. She replied very politely that it was being made and she could check on it, to which my brother-in-law replied in a less-than-pleasant tone that she should hurry it up. The waitress lost facial composure for a moment, but replied again politely that she would check to see what the issue was. It was not a fun few moments, especially since I was sitting between them. A third waitress brought out most of our food not long after, and the seafood omelet came out last, a few minutes later. My guess on the situation is that the long-haired tall girl must have ticked off the kitchen staff, because there is no real reasonable reason for five orders to take almost an hour to cook when people sat after us had already left after eating their food.
My waitress got a less-than-exceptional tip because, let's face it, she did a crap job. I hope she has another job lined up elsewhere and will let a better server take her place at this great restaurant. Because our first waitress was so awesome, I went to find her before we left and apologized for the way she had been spoken to and thanked her for being so patient. She thanked me for taking the time to go say that, and I hope she wears off on the bad waitress so that she won't be collateral damage again in the future! read more
