Sushi was good grade. General manager isn't that good. He tried having waiter order that didn't know anything about sushi or Asian alcohol. Messed up my order. Instead of offering to fix bill he tried to act like it was our fault nicely... I paid but won't go back. Place was empty on a Friday night. Should have been a major red flag but we were hungry. This restaurant won't last long if they don't take time to train and hire knowledgeable staff. read more

The entryway was really nice and very photo worthy. The restaurant overall was in a nice location within the Wharf and the view was amazing. The food was relatively good and the drinks were pretty. I also liked the container the dessert came in. Our server was great and very knowledgeable of the menu. read more

3.5 stars! They used to be amazing, but things have changed in the last 1-2 years. Reservations: still a must as they are still very popular thanks to their awesome location Food: 3.5 stars - sushi rolls are not that good, they are not bad at all but given the price and other sushi places in DC, they pale in comparison - tuna zuke: very disappointing, fun delivery but taste nothing special - green tea match tiramisu: their flagship dessert, this was good but this time it had too much cream and too little body, so it was more mushy than how it is supposed to be Drinks: not good. 3 stars at best If you want good wine or beer, maybe you can be satisfied here but their cocktails are not good. Service: 3 stars It was too busy and took over 20 mins just to order.. could never find the server and even paying the check took 15 mins.. I'd say try a new place like Ilili right next to them as a new restaurant instead of what used to be a great place now dwindling down and end up being disappointed. I can't recommend Nara-ya anymore. read more

Ate dinner here last night. Brian at the bar was the absolute BEST! His food and drink recommendations were spot on. The food is always phenomenal. Unlike anything else in the city. The wagyu tartare is unbelievably good. Tender with a hint of smoke from the cloche. And the Lobster Dynamite roll was indescribably good. read more

Nara-Ya - The Ballad of Yasuke 2.0 - Sushi Bars Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

We were a party of 12 looking around The Wharf for any restaurant that could accommodate us last minute. A very difficult request so we were expecting long wait times or no availability at all until we came across Nara-Ya. They were able to seat us right away which was amazing! The interior decor is gorgeous and right now decorated with cherry blossoms everywhere. I ordered the shrimp tempura special for the night which had fried salmon on top as well. It was delicious and came with an amazing eel sauce. After ordering our food came out quick too. Overall it was a great experience, it just seemed to be a little overpriced for the quantity you receive, but most restaurants in this area are pretty high up. read more

If anything, this restaurant is a vibe! If you're familiar with La Vie, it is located on the first floor in the same building. I recommend making reservations to ensure you have a place to eat, but from what I've seen, there's usually plenty of space at the bar. I'll be honest - this is not a spot that you come to eat when you are really hungry. This is a place you come to see and be seen, dress up, and take pretty pictures. The food and drinks are pricy, and the portions are small. Nonetheless, I did enjoy all of the food and drinks that I consumed. Just keep in mind that you may need to hit Shake Shack afterwards. Overall, it's a nice treat for special occassions, but I doubt that this is a place that I will dine at regularly. read more

Was looking for a nice brunch in DC and stumbled across Nara-Ya. It is a Japanese restaurant that has an all-you-can-eat deal for $45. One big plus is this restaurant is located at the Wharf with beautiful views of the water. For the price you are paying, it is a solid deal but it isn't going to be the best quality food. Here is some of what I had: - Miso Pork belly Hash: This was mostly potatoes with some pork belly I had to dig for. The kimchi aioli provided a nice kick and the potatoes were great, I just wished the pork belly was richer and more abundant. - Spicy Salmon roll: It was pretty low-quality salmon and the rice itself was also not that good. - Yuzu cheesecake mousse: Probably my favorite dish of the brunch. Quite acidic and the cheesecake is light and airy, yet creamy - Smoked Salmon Toast: This was solid and refreshing - Fried Chicken Benedict: The yuzu hollandaise had a kick that made this dish quite interesting. I didn't taste much of the fried chicken but the egg and sauce really made this - Tamago Omelet: The sauce on it is nice but this one was practically an omelet -Crispy Brussel Sprouts: Miso sauce really adds a nice sweetness to the vegetables - Pork Dumplings: They are crispy but the pork needed more seasoning One thing I did notice was that the service and plating were inconsistent. Our first course came out almost immediately and there were other times we were waiting a while for our food and for our server. We reordered a couple of food items and the quantity of what we got (and even the plate it was on) would be different. read more

The food here is delicious! We went for the endless brunch. The skirt steak and eggs were my favorite, but all of the options were delicious. The portions are shared and tapas style but they keep them coming as long as you like. We also got the mimosas and they were pretty good too. The inside is decorated nicely, it gave a spring-y feel with all the flowers. The views were nice also. The customer service was great, they were attentive, friendly, and checked in often. I think you get a good deal for the pricing! I'd definitely go back. read more

Food was amazing! We had sushi mostly and what a treat! The creativity on each dish took it another level. I still think of about the Smokey flavor on one of the sushi's. We saved room for dessert and the favorite was the strawberry custard. Service was amazing, our Angel had great recommendations and accommodating (we had a picky eater with us :) ) The place looks great and we took a bunch pictures downstairs with all the wall art. Came here for a coworker's farewell dinner. The restaurant is gorgeous with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The food was overall decent. I really liked the duck, cauliflower and the electric eel. Nara-Ya - Sushi Bars Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I visited Nara-Ya for their $45 bottomless food brunch. We were one of the first reservations on a Saturday, being seated when the restaurant opened. The decor is vibrant and the views of the water are lovely. We were informed that we could choose three dishes at a time and all dishes would be served family style. That makes sense for pacing purposes, though it was annoying that I couldn't order a single serving of something if my dining companion(s) didn't want it. Although our waitress promptly took our first order, our service ended there. We were finished with our first three dishes and our table was cleared well before we ever put in a second order. Meanwhile, the table next to us (with the same amount of people and the same reservation time) was finishing their second course. The wait got so long, I had to ask a busperson to send over our server, who seemed confused as to what we could possibly want. This was how the morning went on: every other table seemed to be consistently ordering and receiving food, but we had to actively try and flag down our server with long gaps between orders and food. In the end, we did get everything we wanted within our two hour limit, but I had been starving when we sat down and was frustrated by seemingly being ignored in favor of other tables. The restaurant was not busy when it opened, and only got busier toward the end of our time, so I don't see an explanation other than the server possibly being ticked we didn't order cocktails or something. Ultimately, the food was good, even excellent. I loved the octopus takoyaki, matcha pancakes, French toast, and pork dumplings. The only dish we ordered that I would pass on would be the chicken and waffles. Everything else was pretty delicious. Was a bit disappointed the deviled eggs weren't available. But even though the food was great, I was so deeply annoyed and frustrated the whole time that it made it difficult to enjoy what would have been on otherwise wonderful meal. read more

My husband and I faithfully go to brunches and this is by far is a top 3. We went around 11 before it got super crowded. The view was beautiful, the ambiance was bright and colorful, the service was superb and the food was divine. The combination of flavors just melted in your mouth. A little expensive for the unlimited brunch and drinks compared to others in the area but once you experience Nara-Ya, you'll soon realize that it's worth it! We'll definitely be back! read more

The food was good, and the service is great, but it's definitely expensive to eat here, which is one of the reasons why I've reduced the number of stars to 3. The food isn't "distinctive" enough amid a number of great dc restaurants to justify the price. Plus, the meal included 20% gratuity and if you're sensitive to smells, there is an intense paint smell (most likely because this place is so new). Now to the food - I started off with the "Rhythm of the river" cocktail. Super aesthetically pleasing and tastes good, but I wasn't wow'd by the taste, which I expect for a $17 drink. Also got the "DuPont roll" and "it's business time." Both, again, were fresh and good - but at $21/$22 a roll, I think there's decent sushi at a much lower price elsewhere. read more

This was my second visit here this year and honestly, the more I come, the more I want to return. I tried some different meal options this go round and was not disappointed in my selections. For starters we had, A5 roll, California Roll and the Nara-Ya Roll. All three were beyond delicious. My friend is not an experienced sushi connoisseur, but she definitely enjoyed the two I selected. For our main course we enjoyed the A5 Japanese Wagyu as recommended, rare. I have never experienced such a delightful, tender, and absolutely delicious meal prepared as exquisitely as this one. It was truly worth the experience. Chefs kiss. 10/10 will DEFINITELY recommend and I'll be back! Christi-on deserves a raise. He was attentive, charismatic, he knew the menu in and out and he checked in often. I must say, he was probably the best server I've had in ages. read more

Wow, love love love this place for brunch. I love when I can taste an entire menu for a great price. You order two items at a time and they keep coming back to take your order. Our waiter was on it and we never waited more then 5 minutes between plates. I tried a lot of items but got full before I could try it all. Looks like I will need to come back again to try the rest. Officially my favorite restaurant. I personally love sushi, flowers, and eclectic decor so this place got all the marks. Attention to details.is just galore here! Taking pictures in the hallway before getting on the elevator is a MUST. Gentlemen (or ladies) --if you being your dates here just prepare to spent 5-10 min taking pictures for your lovely dates. It's a rights of passage. A must order for a dramatic start of your course is the smoked salmon. The presentation, the smoke, the actual smoked salmon shape of a rose a-la rose in the Beauty and the Beast? I would have stayed with the Beast if I was served this salmon rose everyday. Sushi rolls are great but not the best of the best, to be honest, but you know what the ambiance of this place as well as the service - the servers here are all so cordial and best of the best - kills it. 5 and a half stars!! read more

I'll start with the positive: the crispy cauliflower! It was the best thing we had out of everything. The ambience is nice and you get a good view if seated next to the windows. The not so great: drinks were way too overpriced at $23 a small glass! Lobster sushi was ok, and Nar-Aya sushi was good, nothing too crazy good. Waitress took too long to take our order, and when we asked for eel/soy sauce, she took like 20 mins to bring it over and said "someone else is supposed to bring it" Beware, they charge a Subcharge fee that you can get removed from the bill! When I asked about it they went on about how they use it to not raise prices but at the end of the explanation she said she could take it off the bill. read more

Best sushi rolls I have had in years in the DMV. For a Sunday evening, the restaurant wasn't at all as packed as I expected it to be. The menu is straight to the point and although there are plenty of items, it's not over saturated with different versions of the same food styles(excluding sushi of course). The server was great and although my friend and I had plenty of questions, the server was patient and not overbearing. For drinks I had the Yasuke/Yosuke which is a whiskey drink and it was good and not a smack to my tongue. The sushi rolls I devoured were the Smoke Break, Green Dragon, and the signature Nara-Ya. Of these, the Nara-Ya was the best although each tray had there own uniqueness. I would put Smoke a break as second due to it being the warm role of the mix and had a crunchiness to it. The Green Dragon was good but could not compete with the rest. The aesthetic of the restaurant upon entering is cool and definitely there for the photos ops. It's hard not to be in awe when entering and it sets the tone for once you get off of the elevator. The view of the Potomac River is nice and even though it's in The Wharf, you don't hear anything from the crowds outside. read more

Based on a recommendation of a sushi chef (who doesn't work here btw), I've been meaning to come here for a long time. This place was amazing, highly recommend. 1. Reservation: required. Hard to get a seat without one. 2. Entrance: surprise!! 5/5 stars I mean I never have a section for entrance, but this place is so smart to use what would have been a shady walkway to the restaurant into an Instagrammers dream. I won't say more, so you can be surprised as much as I did. 3. Food: wow and must try 5/5 stars. - Crispy cauliflower - yum! - Seaweed salad: hated it. Looks pretty, but tastes no good. (I do eat seaweed normally, fyi) - Nara-ya roll: great - District spice roll: also great 4. Desserts: WOW, MUST TRY!! 5/5 stars Their desserts deserve a special mention. Like wow. (see my pictures) TEA MATCHA- MISU: you have to try it. Oh my god, I salivate just thinking about it and wanna go back right now. I love mascarpone to begin with and they combine it with ladyfinger(another favorite) and has matcha powder on top.. such an amazing combination it creates and it comes in this amazing wooden box. like wow. Dessert drink with shaved chocolate was so good. Although it is simply shaved chocolate, but not the ingredient inside the drink, but throughout you can taste and most importantly smell the chocolate. It was amazing. Never had chocolate smell so good in its dry shaved form. It is called the INSANE chocolate and I cannot find it anywhere. If anyone who reads this knows, please be a dear and send me a message on where I can buy it please. 5. Drinks: good, but mostly on the okay side. 3/5 stars. Old fashioned was good, but nothing special. Wagyu fat whiskey drink was strong, and they light up the fat on fire in front of you, it is very interesting, but doesn't taste all good. 6. Service: professional, awesome and courteous. 5/5 stars 7. Bathroom: amazing! 5/5 stars. especially the unisex bathroom. Even if you don't need to go, check it out. And yes, it is my first time recommending a bathroom to anyone. But trust me, it is so cool. Wish they add more bathroom for women though, the line is always so long, but they decor is so good, you can enjoy the wait at least. 8. Payment: I never enjoyed paying this much. Comes in a beautiful wooden box, reminding me of Tom Hanks in the Da vinci code. Don't be fooled! They have already charged the 22% tip on your bill, so unless you want, don't add another 20% by mistake. 8. Ambience: romantic, expensive, Asian, slightly dark 9. View: amazing! especially if you sit by the window. Let's not forget they are located on the wharf and facing the water. All in all, I already made my next reservation to come here and everyone should try this place. read more

Nara-Ya was a choice for my friend's birthday last night. The decor and ambiance was really nice, eclectic and fun! You find surpised everywhere on the walls. Its really a conversation starter. We made reservations for 8:15 and was seated by 8:19. As soon as we were seated the fire alarm went off for about 10-minutes and the manager came over to tell us that it was a false alarm. It finally went off and we were able to order without the flashing lights. We order drinks, appetizers, sushi rolls, and dessert. The food and drinks came out pretty quick. And our waiter was amazing. We ordered crispy cauliflower and calamari for appetizers. The calamari was really good, but the crispy cauliflower & the sauce it came with lacked so much flavor. Everything was super bland. It was literally just crispy cauliflower thats it. With pickled veggies of some kind as a garnish. I ordered a rosemary drink that our waiter told me was close to a gin an tonic and a Rhythm on the River with dinner. The first drink was great and the rosemary flavor was amazing. The second drink taste like juice (it was a sweeter drink). Our sushi rolls were pretty good. The server gave us the wrong rolls as my friend ordered a roll without avocado but was given a roll with avocado. We both ordered the Salmon Sizzler. The flavor was okay, with a kick. We also ordered the matcha tiramisu in my opinion that was really great! The experience overall was fun,our server was great but we barely finished some of our food and the staff came and snatched our plates which was a little unsettling as they didnt ask if we were finished. They just took everything away. We share desserts and had it in the middle of the table so everyone could taste but the server took the dessert away. read more

Brunch here is all you can eat and order as you go, with a lot of taste to boot! Was here on a beautiful day with a gorgeous panoramic view of the harbor at the now prestigious DC wharf. The food was delicious and quite tasty, I had tried just about half the menu and can say without a doubt, I will be back! We were told we could order 3 entrees/appetizers at a time but the waiter was generous on the portions and the food kept flowing ever so smoothly. The two hour time limit was just enough time to enjoy each bite and savor it without feeling rushed. There is limited street parking so I decided to park at garage #1 right beneath the restaurant, it was a hefty $30 by the time we finished in around two hours and took a short walk to the end of the wharf afterwards, to buy some live crabs for dinner. Make sure you visit the seafood boats at the end of the wharf if that is your kind of thing. Lots of views and other restaurants nearby so come down to DC for a quaint walk or a fancy meal soon! read more

Whenever I enter an expensive place my expectations from the food are really high. Everyone has their own preference and mine is food more than anything. Even more than the service. Idc if the server screams at me, I want my money on the food. Nara-Ya is definitely an experience and there is a huge focus on the ambiance of the place which is greatly appreciated but the food is where the lack is. I ordered Smoked Zuke Tuna and I should have just thrown away my money instead because all this is a smokey trick for your Instagram but no flavor and the smokiness literally overpowers every bit of this waste of $ Now we come to the Sushi which was amazing. That's where Nara-Ya redeems its food in my opinion and I am going to give their Sushi chef all the credit for this. Whoever you are, you are the star of this place. Dessert was also fine but more for show as well. There was some sort of error while charging my bill and the server apologized for it and offered a drink on the house which I declined because in busy places like Nara-Ya things happen but it was very nice of the server to offer. Service is also another forte of Nara-Ya. All in all I think 3/5 is pretty justified and that's a review for you. read more

Very few spots have a menu wherein everything is good, but not Nara-Ya. Literally every dish was pleasing to the palette. Unfortunately, our waiter was very slow in taking our orders that they'd just ran out of the cauliflower (which we really wanted to try based on the reviews). The chef did offer us edamame hummus instead on the house and it was delish! I also really loved the seaweed salad. We ordered all the vegan items on the menu and we thank the chef for not letting us down. Again every food item was perfect. The Matcha Tiramisu (not vegan) so darn good I found myself scraping the bottom The drinks were a bit on the sweet side and not strong. The ambiance is perfect for date night or an intimate group of friends. The hostess greets you downstairs and takes your temperature the allows you up. The seating allows you to overlook the wharf seemingly from every table, but next time I'd love to sit directly at the window. There's a secret room that's Instagram worthy we didn't get to see, but we'll be back early. The server was nice but not very timely or attentive. This spot has won the vibe check - all the japanese art and aesthetic really added a pleasant vibe to the restaurant. each art piece was super interesting to look at - they really did a good job of decorating the place to make it "insta-grammable" for the drinks: loved the rhythm of the river. i love sweet cocktails and this tasted like it had zero alcohol in it. my friend got the martini and i gotta say the presentation was 10/10. for the price its worth it - you get your cocktail, stuffed olives, and a little side snack of some fish and caviar. very cool! the dessert cocktail our waitress recommended was also great - she made sure to let us know it wasnt one of those sweet cocktails that tasted bitter sweet but rather was actually dessert type sweet. the flavor reminded me of an indian dessert called "ras malai". Our waitress also invented the old fashion so we had to order it in her honor. i dont usually like whiskey but this did not disappoint! i enjoyed the smoothness and little cracker that came on top. my friend whose a big whiskey guy said this was one of the best old fashions he's ever had for the food: i gotta say i wasn't super impressed. presentation was on point but the food itself wasn't anything special. the crispy cauliflower was great but i wished it had more of a spicy pepper on it, and the sauce was entirely at the bottom of the dish which was hard to reach. the peppers were great, but it was weird because its on the vegan side of the menu but is topped with a little fish flake? my vegetarian friend could only eat some of the peppers because of that. The sushi for the both of us was good - no complaints. soy sauce was made perfectly which is a big deal - i usually find soy sauce to be very salty. i wish there was some added factor to the sushi itself to make it unique since this place has trademarked every other area as unique overall for this being their third month opened i think theyre doing a great job and would recommend to all my friends to check it out, and I'll be back for the wagyu and smoked tartare read more

Great service, I didn't know that it's Brunch only on Saturdays. We really came here for the Sushi not scrambled eggs shared style. Ee made our reservation on Open Table and it did not say Brunch only. I've been here several times and the sushi is always delicious. We stayed because the server was so nice, the menu is very different for a brunch Octopus Takoyaki (Octopus pancake balls), Miso Pork Belly Hash.....The only sushi is California Roll, Veggie roll and Spicy Salmon Roll. They did have Dumplings: chicken Pork and Veggie. This all falls on me I should have called and asked if it was regular menu. We should have left when we going out that it was Brunch Day! The menu is no where near what it usually is and it is $49.00 per person for shared 4 inch plates. It was 1:30 so we wanted lunch, not pancakes. We ended up having potstickers and california rolls, both of which took about 15 minutes to come out. California Roll is 4 small pieces. You are allowed to order three items at a time if we would have realized how long it took to get one item we would have doubled up. Party if two mandatory tip 25.00 service fee total bill $172.00 and that was with no alcohol. It was myself and my 13 year old grandson. My bad I should have left when they told me brunch only.
