They were absolutely wonderful. I brought my Mother in who hates letting people touch her hair and they were very patient with her and her tender-head, as an aging senior. When she left, she was extremely happy. I never had a bad experience with them, but I wish they were open later so I could go to them more frequently after work. They are PERFECT for black hair care. read more

I was very happy with the braiding, but the woman who did my hair had a consistent attitude towards me. Pay took her side and is now refusing to service me or my boys. Unbeknownst to them? I have found an excellent Braider who has grown my hair out to a wonderful length... I am sorry the shop refused to keep my family as customers, but they-did. I have since heard from others in the Valley who have had similar experiences. To keep customers? You must be compassionate and welcoming. I had recommended this shop to others who now unfortunately will not be going due to the rudeness and inappropriateness I experienced. I realize this is not a popular review, but it is honest. read more

I'm a proud naturalista and I've been a loyal customer of Nappy by Choice since I moved to PA in 2015. I have had several things done at this salon: deep conditioning, regular trims, silk presses, and Senegalese twists. Every single one of my experiences have been beyond positive. They're not scissor-happy with the trims, my silk presses (done by Paula) look beautiful, and my twists (by Margaret) not only look absolutely amazing but the lady did them in record time! read more

Since moving to Allentown in 2014, I've been a loyal customer at Nappy by Choice. For the best part I'm usually pleased with my hair , how it's treated and cared for. The reason for the two star rating is the feeling of indifference I get when scheduling an appointment. Sometimes I'm told that my stylist (owner) too busy to take my call and she'll get back to me but never do. My birthday is next month and I've been calling for two weeks for an appointment. Now I'm told she is booked up till December 28th!!! Before that I was told she's too busy so I called back later only to be told she had to go out of town and won't be available until the following Tuesday?! Frustrating thing is that I like the work she do on my locs but I don't appreciate the run around. Wish Allentown had more choices for black hair care. read more

Ms. Pay is awesome. Nappy By Choice is a trendsetting hair salon in Allentown, PA! They are infamous for their intricate "dread locks" style. They are also a haven for those seeking refuge from "perms" and stylists without skills. read more

My daughter needed her hair braided and being new to the idea, it seemed like a solid choice. The wait wasn't too long-- about twenty-five minutes after our scheduled appointment time. After a misunderstanding about the hair used, the process went well. The braids looked great, and my daughter was pleased. My only complaint was the price. 85$ for cornrows without a wash or blow-dry is incredibly high to me. For that alone, we would never return. There are other places around to try where I feel like I can get a better value. read more

Scheduled appointment 2 weeks in advance. drove 2 hrs to get there and they canceled my appointmen. horrible service. go to rebel rebel salon in Philadelphia much better and You can understand what they're saying. Highly don't recommend read more

I hate to give only one star because my visit there was pleasant but the aftermath of getting my hair done makes me not ever want to come back. I think as other reviewers have said, this is the place to go to get locs, but if you are a natural BEWARE the pros: everyone in the shop was pleasant, i was running a little late and called them and was told it would be no problem. The woman who did my hair was pleasant conversation wise and she seemed to be knowledgeable about african american hair though she wasn't african american, she told me my hair felt nice and healthy, she gave me a great wash and then i sat in her chair. The cons: she put something in my hair, i assumed it was heat protectant and then blew dry my hair and then used a flat iron. The blow dry felt like when i used to go to dominican salons, very hot! (dominican salons are the reason why i had to do a big chop 3 years ago). Then the flat iron she used was one of those mini travel flat irons that don't have temperature regulation and can heat to over 400 degrees. When i was done i thought my hair felt very flat but i let it go, i did a protein treatment on my hair the week before and thought my hair would be able to withstand whatever had just been thrown at me in regards to the amount of heat used. I wrapped my hair and added a little oil and the next day it had a lot of body. I had straightened my own hair the week before I went to the shop (because i had an event to go to) and when the girl washed it it kinked up like it normally does, after my salon visit my hair is so damaged by the heat that it barely reverts back to its 4C texture at the ends. The front is very stringy, and the back seems to be half the volume it was 3 weeks ago I have spent YEARS growing my hair out again because of heat damage and I feel defeated because I feel like to get my hair to where it was before this visit I'm going to have to cut off at least 2 inches of hair. The worst part of the visit is how the woman who was doing my hair kept going on about how naturals should wear their hair kinky and that they do all sorts of natural styles, but she's left my hair in such a state that if i wanted to do a twist out that looked halfway decent, I'd have to cut off hair that SHE damaged. I'm writing this review as a warning to naturals, go with your own heat protectant, ask them what type of irons they use, take every preventative measure before you go in because while my straightened hair looked great (the next day) my afro will take several protein treatments and trims to get back to where it used to be. read more

Best to schedule an early appointment b/c w/ walk-ins it's possible your appointment will be pushed back. (This happens most places I hear) The prices are a bit much but they do great work. I normally get microbraids or cornrows from Margaret and she is very fast. At one point I didn't have cash on me and she was trusting enough to let me run to the ATM to get the cash out. I haven't been in able to go back b/c of financial reason and me thinking I can do my hair myself but this is definitely my favorite salon. The store is beautiful and spacious and they are very accommodating for changing appointments and whatnot. read more

Pay gave me my dreads 6 years ago and I love them! She is by far the best and I wouldn't trust anyone else with my dreads. Her salon is always fun and welcoming. This place is great I highly recommend it, nothing but good experiences! THANKS PAY! read more

I was looking for a place to get my daughter's hair cut and straightened and found this place through Yelp. I called and spoke with Johnetta. got an appointment for the following day which I was grateful for because we were only in town for a few more days. Came in on time at 6 but she thought the appointment was at 5. She was working with another customer but took care of my daughter anyway. My daughter has a lot of hair and it needed deep conditioning but Johnetta worked on her hair until we were satisfied. It took almost 3hours but it was worth it. My daughter was happy and I was happy with the result. read more

I absolutely adore this salon; Pay is amazing at what she does. I've been a loyal customer of Nappy by Choice since April 29, 2012 & I wouldn't trust anyone with my precious locs other than Pay. She has a great attitude & very positive vibes about her. I've always made an appt & never had a problem with over-scheduling. Their prices are very reasonable & I would definitely recommend this salon to any & everyone !! read more

Ive gotten my hair done here a few times usually for braids &they turned out well. Most recently i went to get senegalese twist. They looked good when i left but when i got home and looked closely i noticed it was a bad job some hair was loose. Ive had them in for about two weeks and several twists have come out on their own. Theyre supposed to last 2-3 months ill be lucky if they last me another two weeks. The service is good. Theyre nice ladies. I just wouldn't reccomend this place if youre not getting box braids or dreads. read more

I'm new in town and needy a salon that could deal with my nappy head. Not just any salon would do ( if you know what I mean). I found the salon off of the few reviews on yelp. I will always go back there and I suggest you do the same. Pay (the owner) is, nice, professional, and knows hair. As she looked thru her schedule book I could see it was full, she still squeezed me in because I was desperate. She made me look brand new and even suggested another style for me that I will be trying the next time in. Finding a salon isn't hard, but finding a GOOD salon is. Nappy by choice is now my spot. I highly recommend you give it a try. read more

African hair salon. Very clean, professional, and pleasant. She did a great job on my hair. Everyone I saw did a great job on their clients. The girl with the dress was killing the dreads (she was awesome). I had to leave and come back she didn't give me any attitude and she finished in good time. I will be returning! read more

I have to give 1 star because the service was NOT up to par. I got 4 goddess braids on a Saturday and had to wear a scarf from the moment I left and took them out that Monday because they did not look professionally done. No gel was used so there were fly aways everywhere, instead they used edges and it left a white residue ALL OVER MY HAIR. The parts were not straight and they left a big knot on all 4 braids to lengthen the braids down my back. I mean it looked like someone who just learned and what surprised me even more was that the OWNER LET ME LEAVE LIKE THAT! I own a business as well and if a service done by an employee is not suffice for the reputation of my establishment I would not allow the client to leave like that or compensate them for it not being up to our standards. I was very disappointed and will not be going back. I hear they are great with dreads but DO NOT get goddess braids here!! read more

My14 year old son received a box braid and it looks terrific. It's been in for 3 weeks and still looks good.

I hate the fact that I have to give one star cuz I'm all for my people however I went there to get my hair wash and pressed out simple right?the lady whose name is Liz did my hair when I tell you it was low level, basic ,sub par, tacky, I just got out of Cosmetology School, I'm really not sure how to do black peoples hair ,type of job .I mean not only did she do a piss-poor job she had an attitude I asked this lady if she put heat protectant in my hair before she blew it out she turned around and said didn't you see me put it in? never again maybe if I would have went to one of the other ladies who look like they was really doing some hair I would have got a better experience but I know I'm never going back there again back to the Dominican shop for me.if you do go there don't go to that girl Liz that girl don't know what she's doing.somebody come teach her something.sorry nappy by choice I really wanted to like this shop. read more
