If you are looking for Authentic Sri Lankan - Sinhalese style food this is probably the best (and…read moreprobably only) place I know in the city. Have tried their Lampraise (banana leaf rice)*, Rice & Curry Box, Lankan Roti and short eats (egg rolls etc and have been impressed. The flavors on the Lampriase is as 90% as authentic as you would find in Sri Lanka. And the flavors on the curries are great. The curries available can vary day to day depending on the seasons and what's available in the market. The last time I went I had Jack Fruit curry, Beans, Fish Curry, Banana Flower curry which were all really good. They are quite generous with the portions (at least the last time I went) but I am worried that this generosity doesn't lead to downsizing or totally cutting down on stuff in the future to manage the margins as this is probably the only Sinhalese style Lankan restaurant in town! Hate losing it as we have been before! Note: Sri Lankan Tamil and Sinhalese cuisines are quite distinct. While there are many Lankan Tamil food restaurants, it's rare to find a Sinhalese style restaurant. The Banana Leaf Rice and Curry you usually get at Tamil fast food places is not the same as the Lampraise. Lampraise has a unique preparation method and the flavors are quite different with a lot of Dutch influence present in it.

Jaffna's Mutton Kari with Jaffna-style rice ($11.99) is an incredible value in downtown Toronto…read more The mutton kari was rich, savory, and packed with aromatic spices like star anise, curry leaves, and cardamom. The spice level was spot on and added just the right amount of heat. It was slightly on the salty side, but overall I really loved it and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Great flavor and excellent value for the price.

We'd just finished a fun outing to the Art Gallery and were looking to grab a quick lunch. We…read morefigured the easiest option was to pop into the Grange food court. After weighing my options, I opted for a Devilled Chicken Wrap from Jaffna Street Food. I was asked what I wanted on it, so I said everything and the wait began. Somehow it took almost 20 minutes for my food to be ready, which was a little weird since the place wasn't busy at all. Nevertheless it's the quality of the food that's important. It's an okay wrap. The Devilled Chicken is quite tasty and very flavorful, and the plentiful other components are also good. The problem, then, is the lack of sauce tying the whole thing together. I would get whole bites of just plain white rice. It was extremely off-putting. Finally I gave up and took the whole thing apart and began eating it with a fork and knife. At least that way I was guaranteed to get a bit of everything in every bite. Jaffna's certainly got potential, but they have some key areas that desperately need to be addressed and fixed.

As a Sri Lankan, I arrived at Hopper Hut not merely hungry, but expectant -- the kind of quiet,…read morepersonal longing that only a diaspora craving can produce. Social media had done its work, flooding my feed with the golden bowls of appa from Colombo street stalls and rooftop eateries across the island. The question was whether this unassuming Scarborough plaza outpost could answer that call. It could, and it did. Hopper Hut occupies a modest space tucked into a nondescript strip mall on Ellesmere Road -- a setting that makes no architectural promises and need not. The dining room at the back is functional and warmly utilitarian, evoking the no-frills confidence of a kitchen that trusts its food entirely. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, bordering on spartan, yet there is something deeply familiar and unhurried about it -- a kind of timeless, neighbourhood authenticity that more polished establishments spend years trying to manufacture. The hoppers themselves are the undisputed centrepiece, and they deliver with conviction. Fermented rice-flour batter, lacework-crisp at the edges, yielding and softly chewy at the bowl's centre -- the texture is precisely what the form demands. One is advised, however, to receive them with immediacy: like all great bread, the hopper is a creature of the moment. The short journey home diminishes their crispness in a way that no reheating can fully redeem. Plan accordingly.

This place felt like a Time Machine to srilanka in the 90s…read more But tbh. The food was average. Crab curry, crab was clearly not of great quality. But the gravy was tasty. Our server was able to keep our order in mind despite us being a party or 10. That was impressive. As for ambience. Honestly was kinda outdated but felt like a piece of home.
