Bless my poor little Chinese soul. Raised with soy sauce as my main condiment, I have close to zero spice tolerance and yet my adventurous palate often pursuades me to wander into South Asian cuisine. The first thing I asked the employee when I got here was, "can you make it not spicy?" to which he replied "yes, I can make no spicy". Delighted, my boyfriend and I ordered 2 biryanis ($7 each), one chicken and one mutton, as well as 5 mutton pattys ($2). As there wasn't much space to dine-in (only one table with 2 chairs) and the Bollywood music was playing fairly loudly, we took it home to eat. I took my first bite and I thought it was delicious. The portion size was MASSIVE and the biryani came with a large chunk of chicken (drumstick or breast) and a hard boiled egg. I took a second bite and then it began... I. WAS. SWEATING. THROUGH. EVERY. SINGLE. PORE. IN. MY. BODY. Including ones I never knew existed. Dear lord, bless my soul. I think I had a total of 5 spoonfuls before I called it quits. Granted the portion sizes were so so worth the price and the flavours were actually enjoyable before it made me profusely sweat, I would highly recommend this place to people who can handle their spice. Sadly, that is not me.

Wasn't in the menu but is a vegetarian dish.

Loaded saucy Biryani with a kick. Super tasty with loads of flavour. Wow... I will be bold and say this place is a real gem and for me is the best Biryani I've tasted. I had a real craving for Biryani and searched for something authentic than restaurants catered to standard palette. This place puts some sauce/gravy during a quick fry of the Biryani and boy is it good and wholesome tastiness! The Biryani is loaded with chicken pieces, a nice moist piece of tandoori chicken, a boiled egg and a sweet onion side (raita?). I can eat spicy and the fresh chilis gives this Biryani a serious kick. All for 7 bucks tax included. Why would you even try to cook Biryani at home if you live in the area? I also order a vegetarian dish shown in the picture. It's not on the menu and I did not understand the chef when inquired, but ordered it anyways since it was so different. The flavours and spices lead me to think it's more of a Sri Lankan dish, like the fried roti. This place will be our regular Biryani fix!

Summary: South Asian classics AND new dishes (chili chicken kothu) cooked right in front of you (although the kothu is precut), prices are fair, with portion sizes that will make you smile (kothu roti) or downright gasp and pinch yourself to ensure you're not dreaming (Biryani). Customizable spice levels. Contending for best kothu roti place in the area. What We Got: chicken biryani, mutton kothu roti, vegetarian kothu, vegetarian biryani, mutton patties, mutton rolls, chili chicken kothu roti What We Liked: ...pretty much all of it What We Don't: ... I didn't think the mutton rolls were special Trying Next: I don't know yet. MENU The triple TV menu does not have everything on the menu (ex. It was missing vegetarian biryani and chili chicken kothu) so you can generally just ask. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure they have non-chili chicken kothu, so maybe the chili chicken is the chicken. The MUTTON KOTHU ROTI is freakin' delicious, fresh, fair sized, and something I'd order again and again. Except... Except there's the biryani (spelled briyani here and for this review). Holy portion size! So most Briyani places give big portion sizes. This places give MASSIVELY ENORMOUS, INHUMAN meat briyani sizes. I ordered a kothu and a bryani. At most places I could finish both with some effort. I WAS NOT CLOSE HERE. That sucker walloped me (FULL DISCLOSURE: I told them I had a big appetite so I'm not sure if they didn't make it extra large just to mess with me. But basically, when I took it for take out, and I opened it, a lot of rice overflowed to the TOP lid... And the bottom part was still packed.) Chicken briyani is served with a banana leaf base, is very carby and greasy, but so tasty... Comes with an egg and tandoori chicken. Egg? Tasty. Chicken leg? Bit dry, but still good. GO FOR IT!

Solid food at low prices. Mutton Buriyani was really tasty with tandoori chicken and a boiled egg.

Chili chicken kothu roti is soooo bomb. The flavor is on point with the right amount of spice. Generous portion too. Just amazing.

I ordered Kothu, which is fried chopped roti . It's funny that the clerk asked me how much spicy do I want. I said what are the levels can I choose from? There are mild, medium, spicy, quite spicy and very spicy. I chose spicy this time because I don't want to have diarrhea for the first time eating sri-lankais food. The curry chicken kothu was very impressive. It smelled so good even my wife who doesn't like spicy food wanted to have a bite. The texture of kothu is special, pretty chewy, it's like both rice and noodle, or a mix of rice and noodle. The amount was also large. I only had half of it and I can continue enjoying it as tomorrow's lunch

I came here for lunch around noon and the place was pretty busy at the time. The menu here has a ton of different rice and fry dishes I wanted, but what really caught my eye was the special they had advertised, it was macaroni and cheese, french fries, and chicken masala.....and let me tell you, this meal punched me in the throat, strangled me, and killed any ounce of hunger I had. The taste and flavour was so overwhelming that I couldn't help but inhale this dish at the speed of light, it was just so dang good. Overall, Cucini Xpress is a certified banger. The portions here are large, the flavour is strong, and all three parts of the dish were delicious even on their own. Looking for a quick and reasonibly priced bite to eat near Dundas Square? This is the place to hit up.

Social media had done its work, flooding my feed with the golden bowls of appa from Colombo street stalls and rooftop eateries across the island. The question was whether this unassuming Scarborough plaza outpost could answer that call. It could, and it did. Hopper Hut occupies a modest space tucked into a nondescript strip mall on Ellesmere Road -- a setting that makes no architectural promises and need not. The dining room at the back is functional and warmly utilitarian, evoking the no-frills confidence of a kitchen that trusts its food entirely. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, bordering on spartan, yet there is something deeply familiar and unhurried about it -- a kind of timeless, neighbourhood authenticity that more polished establishments spend years trying to manufacture. The hoppers themselves are the undisputed centrepiece, and they deliver with conviction. Fermented rice-flour batter, lacework-crisp at the edges, yielding and softly chewy at the bowl's centre -- the texture is precisely what the form demands. One is advised, however, to receive them with immediacy: like all great bread, the hopper is a creature of the moment. The short journey home diminishes their crispness in a way that no reheating can fully redeem. Plan accordingly.

Their bar seats are just enough to fit the 4 of us. The staffs must have found us weird... LoL. 3.5 star for ambiance... Shop is kept pretty clean. We ordered kothu roti with lamb and one with chicken, butter chicken, and a Somoza. Ok I'm no expert in Sri Lankan food, but it tastes authentic as in similar to my friends home cook meals. But maybe I'm not used to it, I find it a bit saltier than my liking. Based on my limited experience with Sri Lankan food, I'll give it a 4 Star for food. Value is 4.5 star. One of the most popular foods from this culture is Kothu Roti (chopped roti that is stir fried with spices, onions, scrambled egg along with meat/ vegetable curry). It often is quite spicy and there aren't many options for it in the downtown core but one place I go to get my fix is Saffron Spice Kitchen. They are a Sri Lankan vendor that offers this speciality dish along with other signature dishes, many of which are vegetarian. What I like about the Kothu Roti from here is the focus is more on the flavour than on spice level. It also has a very good Spice, curry and roti ratio compared to other vendors. There is also an authentic taste remaining at the same time despite the moderate level of spice. I got to try the butter chicken Kothu Roti which was nice and mild. It is priced at $11.95 which is pretty standard and the portion size is generous. I love the rise in fusion food trends lately and this fusion with Butter Chicken definitely works with the Kothu Roti. They offer takeout mainly with minimal seating available. It remains important to continue to support take out vendors just as it is to support those with dine in and patio options. Being one of the few Sri Lankan restaurants in the area, make sure to check it out if you are ever on Queen Street or you can also visit them in Mississauga at their newly opened second location.
