Everything about Nando's starts with their roots in South Africa. Though the PERi-PERi chilli pepper originates in the Caribbean, it's been transformed into a flavor base that brings out incredible heat and flavor. Even the decor of the restaurant brings out the colorful & spicy culture of the sub-continent and its colonial Portuguese influences. The marinated and fire-grilled chicken is AWESOME! You have 5 choices of flavor profiles from plain-ish (ho-hum), Lemon & Herb or Mango & Lime, Medium, hOt, and Xtra HOT! My wife went with the Mango & Lime, while I went with the Medium Hot, which was plenty spicy for me. There are also pour bottles of the different sauces that you can use to adjust the spice level to your liking. I got a grilled corn on the cob and spicy rice as a side and the rice was too spicy for me! My wife went safe (& smart) and ordered cole slaw to cool the heat and a small salad. Make sure to have the server bring you the bottle of tap water to cool your tongue. In our case, she brought a whole pitcher, bless her. I'm a fan of dark meat, so got the chicken leg quarter, which seemed small. Maybe next time I'll go for the half chicken to see how the sauce goes with white breast meat. For dessert, the Pasteis de Natas are similar to the Portuguese Egg Tarts back home, only better! The sugary tops are brulée'ed to char and caramelize the sugar for a smoky flavor. A must try!

Nando's in Canada! I've only been to this chain once in Scotland so it was a big surprise to see it pop up in Ottawa. I really wanted Adam to try it so of course we stopped by for our last meal of the day. The location follows the same rules as the other chains. You still order in the front and they will serve you your order at the table. You get your own utensils, sauces, drinks, napkins. It was also decorated the same. The menu had most of what I remembered as well. I decided to try the sandwich and Adam got a chicken breast. Service is agonizingly slow. We waited over an hour for our meals and even then every item came one at a time. My sandwich was dry and the bread was tough but my side of corn was good. Adam got this tiny tiny piece of chicken but at least he enjoyed his side of mashed potato. I am sad that the experience wasn't as great as when I first tried it but at least we have a Nando's.

I was looking at the reviews and got a bit disappointed. I think that even though it is not a Canadian owned chain, the food and service there is great. I have been to one of the Nandos locations in Toronto and did not really find any difference in food. There were several issues with the wait times at busiest times, but thats obvious, kitchen is not equipped with robots. If you are looking for a fast-casual place, then Nandos is a perfect place to dine out for a reasonable prices and great food. One thing for the owner, please start selling Mango-Lime Marinade or Sauce!!!

Nando's a nice family friendly casual spot for a hot meal where you order at the counter and they bring your food to you. And in the back you can grab your utensils, napkins, and optional sauces. By the registers, they have a fun wooden carving for receiving tips - don't forget, in Canada you've got your loonies and your toonies as coinage options! With 2 out of the 3 of us not into the whole spicy thing, we opted to order our chicken with the least spicy sounding iterations, so we shared: . PERi-PERi Sliders $8.50 PERi-PERi Chicken with Cilantro Dressing and Chilli Jam (Lemon & Herb) . 1/4 Chicken Leg $7.45 (Peri Tamer [a mild sweet base] from the children's menu) with one regular side $2.50 of PERi-PERi fries . Quinoa with Rosted Sweet Potato and Avocado Salad $11.25 (Freshly prepared quinoa on a bed of romaine and spinach with chick peas, roasted sweet potato chunks, cucumber, grape tomatoes, avocado and feta cheese, topped with our signature seed mix) The chicken in the sliders were a bit on the dry side. The quarter chicken was surprisingly tiny a portion, but when we inquired, we were told that it was because it was organic, which would explain the petite size and the not so petite price. But how odd that I could find no mention of "organic chicken" anywhere on their website... It was however a well prepared moist piece of bird. The fries were crisp enough and had a bit of heat. The salad sounded interesting and tasted fine. As I placed our order, there was a glass cover protecting a cluster of individual tarts with a scorched custard filling - Pasteis de Natas $2.50 a traditional Portuguese custard tart. It was just the right amount of sweet to end the meal with!

Good chicken, tender, spicy in a good way but not juicy enough. Rice is not that satisfying

Simple but delicious food. They actually had a power outage because of the storm (tornado warning). We got a complimentary meal because of the power outage. It was very nice of them. I had the plain quarter chicken with potato wedges. You can choose how hot the sauce is on your grilled chicken. I got the plainest because I'm not good with spicey. Hubby also had the quarter chicken but with coleslaw. We had garlic bread for an appetizer & chocolate cake for dessert. Nando's is just down the street from our hotel, the Capital Hill Hotel. So it was very convenient. If we were staying longer we would probably eat here again.

This chain of South African origins recently opened off Elgin at Albert. Coming here for a late lunch one day, it was a warm vibe with an upbeat salsa-ish style of music playing, and a decent design that while still very chain restauranty, was different. A cool feature was a series of wooden slats hanging from the ceiling that likely serve the dual purpose of aesthetics and keeping the large room from getting too loud. We were seated quickly, getting a booth along the windows. Being Nando's newbies, we were given the run down on their process. You start off by choosing the menu item you want, the spice level you desire and then going up to the front counter to order. From there you can grab your own utensils, extra bottles of sauces, etc, while you wait for your food to be brought out to you. It's very much a fast-casual type of place, landing in between a fast food joint and a regular sit down, full service restaurant. Being a chicken-focused place, the menu skews heavily in that direction, with various cuts and preparations of the fowl. Some unique items on the menu include grilled chicken livers, a quinoa and avocado salad, and something they call "wing roulette", where you get several whole chicken wings of varying, unknown spice levels, one of which is the extra hot. University bros will be crushing the wing roulettes, I'm sure.  I settled on the 1/4 chicken meal with dark meat, medium spice, and sides of their casa salad, and potato wedges. They have several beers on tap as well, so I grabbed a 12oz glass of Sleeman Original. It wasn't long before our food was brought out, and my wife and I dug right in. The chicken was moist and tender, and had a great char flavour to it from the grill. The sauce had a good amount of kick to it, even with being someone who likes some spice, but I don't think I'd go any higher if I wanted to actually taste my food. The casa salad was much less fancy than it sounds, since "casa" is Portugese for "house", but the lettuce and greena were all quiet fresh, especially given the time of year, and the creamy dressing was a good counterbalance for the spice of the chicken. My potato wedges were reasonably crispy for wedges, although not the best I've ever had, and had a nice flavour to them from a dusting of the ubiquitous peri peri seasoning.  I remarked to my wife that Nando's was like an international version of Swiss Chalet, so that Canadian institution better watch out. Service was really good, with everyone being really helpful and very friendly as well.  There's not really anything you can hold against Nando's. The food is good, it has a fun atmosphere, and fills a certain little niche in the food industry.

Coming from the UK where 'Havin' a Cheeky Nandos' is part of the dialect, I was deeply disappointed to find out that there isn't a branch in Montreal. Luckily, Ottawa isn't too far! I was thrilled to discover that nearly (if not all) the branches of Nandos in Ontario are Halal, so on my last business trip, I grasped the opportunity to stop-by Nandos on Elgin Street for Lunch. I highly recommend to AVOID lunch hours if you can as the wait is super long... I must have waited around 30-40 minutes until I got my table. This branch is fairly small hence the long wait time. There is a patio facing the main road which did not look particularly inviting so I insisted on waiting for a place inside the typical 'Nandos' cosy interior, where the selection of delicious Peri Peri sauces and techy drinks-screen with over 100 drink flavours were at my reach! I ordered the Peri Peri Chicken Sandwich with Two Sides that did not take too long to arrive. Corn on the Cob was not in season so I opted for Peri Fries and Coleslaw. Both these sides were delicious and met my expectations. The Sandwich however, was extremely disappointing. The boneless piece of chicken was quite bland and very dry... the sandwich had barely any salad (just a thin piece of lettuce) and the famous bread bun was hard and difficult to chew. I ended up dismantling the entire sandwich and just picked on the parts that were eatable... I had to drench my entire chicken piece in sauce in order to enjoy it as it was very bland. Very disappointing for Nandos and definitely not comparable to its UK standard! I will not give up on Nandos however, I will be back again at another branch to try something different. There may still be some hope for it yet...

I was poking around on UberEats looking for deals, as I often do, and came across this new restaurant. I searched online and their website was under construction at the time and their Google Maps listing hadn't had any pictures up yet, so I was a bit hesitant, but I decided to take a chance, especially since they had some great BOGO (buy one get one free) deals on UberEats. I ordered the Fried Chicken Combo ($13 BOGO) which comes with 2 pieces of fried chicken and 2 sides and I bought 2 extra pieces of fried chicken ($7 BOGO). So in total I got 8 pieces of fried chicken and 4 sides for only $20. What a deal! So glad I took a chance and tried this restaurant because the food was delicious! The chicken was so good. The skin was so crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. All the pieces were thighs and drumsticks. I got 2 sides of rice and peas and 2 sides of cabbage. The rice and peas (beans) was delicious. It had a strong coconut milk flavour to it which I loved. Yet it wasn't too oily. The rice was soft and fluffy. Excellent! The cabbage was also delicious and had some pieces of potatoes mixed in. So I had ordered on UberEats for pickup. There were a few hiccups, but they were new (just opened on Feb 23, 2024 which was just 4 days before my visit) and they were so friendly and welcoming, and I got a great deal, so I forgave, lol. So shortly after I placed my order, I got notification that my order was ready. I was shocked but thought maybe they had the stuff premade like at food courts. So I drove over since I was nearby and when I arrived they apologized and said they made a mistake, it would actually be another 25 minutes. Lol. I was already at the restaurant, so I just waited there. Then I got my food after the wait, and they forgot about the BOGO so I just received half of my order. When I advised them they were again apologetic and quickly went off to make the rest of my order, but I had to wait another 25 minutes. They offered to deliver it to me themselves, but I was ok to wait. They are a small independent business and family run. The chef, Vicky, was lovely. As was her daughter who was there helping. And her little grandson was there too. I love supporting business like this. They were so genuine and sincere. I always root for restaurants that are strong on love and passion for the food even if weak on the logistics and business end of running a restaurant. There are tables for dining in. The ambience is casual. I did like that the containers were cardboard and not styrofoam. Extra points for environmental responsibility and it's better for health reasons too (no nasty chemicals leaching into the food from styrofoam). Free parking available on-site. I'm so thrilled to see more culinary diversity here in Ottawa. After Stonefaced Dolly closed down there hasn't been another South African restaurant in the city until Soweto Kitchen opened up. Wishing Soweto Kitchen much success!! (28)

The Long Version: My family and I were celebrating Lunar New Year a bit late and we made up for it by having an epic feast. Our theme was East meets West. My brother got a dinner for 6 at The Mandarin and I got the Combo 6 at Portugalos. The Combo 6 ($69.50) consisted of 1 1/2 chickens, a rack of ribs, a box of fries, a box of rice, 2 boxes of salad, 8 buns and 3 small containers of Piri Piri sauce. I loved that the chicken was already cut into pieces. The meat was tender and fall off the bone. The seasoning was delicious and had a bit of a spicy kick. I also loved that the ribs were also pre-cut. The ribs were also fall off the bone and had good flavour. The fries were shoestring fries and were good. My little neices loved them. The rice was soft and fluffy. It had a tomato flavour with herbs. I liked that the salad came with the dressing on the side. It was romaine lettuce, baby spinach, kale and shredded carrots. The dressing was a creamy green dressing. It was good. The buns were soft and fresh. The sauce was a bit on the oily side, but it had a fiery kick to it. The food was a big hit at the get-together. We got takeout, but they have a spacious dining room. I called in my order the day before and I was able to pick it up right at opening. Service was pleasant. There free parking in the plaza parking lot. Portugalos is where Olito's Cafe used to be. Portugalos has a location in Gatineau as well (which was their original location, this one in Blackburn Hamlet is their second location). Review #53 (2025)

Cataplana is very small and the sea food is not at the best in terms of freshness, I know it is difficult to have fresh seafood in Ottawa especially in the winter time, nevertheless, it certainly can be better for what we had. The steak is ok but it is not a steak house quality, this is something they should look into, perhaps go for some fine quality filet mignon and raise the price so people will appreciate for the quality of the food and would not mind of paying extra for the quality. The owner is a young couple and I think people in Blackburn Hamlet should go there give it a try to support the local business. Good Luck Portugalos hope to see you again later on in the year.

I have been to 4 other places in Ottawa that sell suya and jollof. This is the first place to hang up on me without telling me the cost or how much time my order would take to prepare. My first time paying $27 including tax for a plate of jollof with less than 15% meat. Look at how tiny the portion is on camera. This wasn't ordered through the apps. Wild work. $27 from any other restaurant on bank you're stuffed. Customer service? Non existent. I called to place a pick up order and the customer service was unhelpful at best and driving away new customers at worst. As a first time customer, it's normal to ask questions like how long does the food take to prepare, or to ask what are the plate options. I almost didn't order because I kept asking her can I get a jollof rice plate, and what meat options does it come with and the person on the phone responded with ok got it. I get it, most customers have probably been here before but for new customers who don't know the restaurant, how are we supposed to know how it works? Worst part? I double triple confirmed on the phone and they still got my order wrong. Literally verbally confirmed that I ordered a jollof rice plate with suya and when I show up for pickup 20 minutes later, still have to wait for them to fix my order. Not only did she not apologize, she turned it around and said that's what I ordered. Should have recorded the call and the interaction. The beef suya is also chewy (yes I know it's not supposed to be tender but damn my jaw hurts) and the rice is dry. I don't claim to be an expert in suya and jollof, but I know what good food is supposed to taste like; $27 for the smallest portion of food, and it's not even good. I had to buy a second lunch. I was really excited to have a new jollof and suya place in centretown near the offices but I will be telling everyone I know to avoid this place like the plague. Also food is way spicier than Canadian acceptable level which is great for me but if a public servant office workers order this, you should definitely give them a heads up about the spice. TLDR: bad service and even worse portions

The Long Version: I believe I have eaten at La Casablanca before but it was many years ago before I was on Yelp. Most recently I got food from here through the Too Good to Go app. (It's an app to reduce food wastage. Restaurants sell leftover/day-old food at a discounted price on the app. The catch is it's a surprise bag so you don't know what you're going to get.) I was on my way home and was walking by the restaurant and noticed they had a surprise bag for sale on the Too Good to Go app for $9.99 and I decided to buy it. The man prepared my meal by scooping various items in the warming trays into a takeout box. I got some chicken skewers, rice, roasted potatoes, cabbage, and a vegetable stew (which consisted of carrots, potatoes, bell peppers, and broccoli). I seemed to get a few rogue chickpeas too, lol. The food was flavorful and I liked the seasonings on it. I also liked the variety and that I got to try a little bit of different items. I felt it was a satisfactory deal for $9.99. However on the app it did list that the value of the surprise bag was $29.99, which I don't feel is true, lol. For the $10 I paid, I'll rate it as 4 stars. I'd give it half that rating though had I paid $30 for a takeout box of food (mostly vegetables and rice) from warming trays, lol. The restaurant is inside the Byward Market Square building so it's kind of food court-like but each restaurant has its own seating. The vibe is very casual. The man serving me was courteous. A good place for quick casual Moroccan food. Review #233 (2025)
