The waffle is the right texture of crispy on the outside soft and done on the inside. The flavor is immaculate. It's not too overly sweet. The fried chicken is seasoned to perfection. It is a 10 out of 10. I don't know why people think that just because this is a black home establishment that black excellence does not stand up to the rest, but I am here as a witness to testify that Nana's chicken and waffles is not to be missed. Atmosphere: We went in around 12 PM on a Wednesday and there was no wait, which was nice. The vibe was comfortable and not too busy, which I appreciated. Service: Our host was pleasant, and overall the staff was decently nice. However, there was a lack of clear communication from the server that caused frustration. I ordered the strawberry cheesecake waffle, which normally comes with chicken. Since I don't eat chicken, I asked for turkey bacon instead. I assumed it would be an even exchange -- especially since a side of chicken wings is $8 and turkey bacon is $6. When the bill came, I was charged extra for the turkey bacon. When I asked why, the server said, "Oh, we don't do substitutes." If that's the policy, it should have been explained upfront so I could make an informed decision. A simple heads-up like, "Since you're skipping the chicken, I'll need to add the turkey bacon separately" would've avoided all the confusion. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but something has changed and I will never go back again. Somewhere between move from Conyers to McDonough something was lost! The lemon waffles were gorgeous on the top and burnt on the bottom. I still tried to be optimistic and taste a side that wasn't as burnt but the flavor of them was off. The Salmon Croquettes were a little bigger than the size of a quarter. Again I still attempted them because I don't eat a-lot and if they were good then it would be ok. Nope! The one pinch was full of GREASE! You could even push the baby patties with your fork to see the grease! I gave 2 stars because our waitress was very accommodating. She even brought the manager over to fix everything. He came over in a dirty apron, but he was extremely friendly and concerned about our complaints. He apologized and offered to remake the items that we complained about. I was skeptical, but I wanted to give them the opportunity to redeem themselves because this was one of our favorite restaurants in Conyers. Well, Nope! He failed again. As requested, he brought everything out packaged in togo containers. He advised me to put the patties in the AirFryer to reheat and that would help with the grease. Huh? Why would I have to cook my food to "fix" something that I paid you to cook. So final verdict, I put the baby salmon croquettes in the Air Fryer. They were STILl full of grease and they were definitely missing something when they were mixed. The lemon waffles were doughy and again the lemon flavor used was horrible!!! I'm embarrassed to say that I have recommended this spot to several people. My apologies to anyone that went based on my recommendation!! We have been visiting Nana's since the Conyers location and have been huge fans, even visiting for breakfast once and ordering lunch to go before we left for later that day. I have told everyone about this place. Today we stopped in and first noticed a sign on the door that their credit card machine was down. After digging, I can see it has been down for several weeks now which is a bit questionable. We visited an hour before closing so, I realize that plays a roll in the state of the restaurant. It was about half full, but we were still sat between two tables in a very tight spot as opposed to an open area a few tables over. The restaurant was a bit messy with several tables unbussed. Next we were told the menus were old and the prices weren't up to date but they would tell us the new price if we have any questions. Most items had a $2-$3 increase, which I understand, but even the side items had those same increases (a side of eggs went from $3 to $6.) I also noticed that the price for the Cajun Shrimp and Grits, didn't include shrimp!? That price is the base price for grits and $1.50 (or more...I didn't ask what the new rate was) per shrimp. I tried to order the Apple Cinnamon Waffle which their menu indicates is award winning. But it's no longer available. We ultimately got the red velvet waffle, the Nana's breakfast plate and the Blueberry waffle. Everything was good, but we were surprised to find the blueberry waffle was just a waffle with 7 blueberries on top. The positives: the food was still good, but it wasn't the amazing food it used to be. Our server was great, and our food came out quickly. The negatives: this place used to be a whole vibe. Having met Nana back in Conyers the experience felt personal, and we even felt that personal feel after the restaurant moved. But today the place felt messy and lacking. So this restaurant is packed in pretty tight and I'm not a fan of that when I am eating. I will start with my partner who had a Poor boy sandwich with fries and he said it was good. I had the banana pudding chicken and waffles with a side of 2 eggs over hard with cheese. When my meal came out the eggs were scrambled with cheese, and I had no flatware to eat with. Without an apology for her mistake the server takes the eggs away. She brings hot sauce to the table and no syrup. My eggs come out this time with no cheese. Ok fine when we tell her she very condescendingly says she will give us the dollar for the cheese out of her pocket. The food here is definitely good and I would recommend it to anybody interested in trying it out. My mom and I are both big Real Housewives of Atlanta fans so we wanted to try out Kelli's restaurant that she's spoken about several times on the show and I was overall pleased with my experience. The food was really good. I got a strawberry shortcake waffle which is an off the menu item and it was definitely tasty and really flavorful. I did get the strawberry glaze on the side though because I'm not a big sweet tooth type of person and there was already so much sugar going on that I just didn't need that additional glaze on top of the waffle and I'm glad I did that. The fried chicken was also really good. It was well seasoned, crunchy, and tasty. My mom really likes fried green tomatoes so she ordered some as an appetizer and I don't usually ever like them so I wasn't expecting much at all, but they were actually really really good. They sprinkled them with bacon and some other things as well and I actually really liked how they came out. Our server was really nice and helpful. The food did take a while to come out and that was kind of a complaint that my mom had but our server again was really nice so I personally didn't mind too much. The ambience was nice in there too. We literally went on a Friday afternoon and I was expecting there to be next to nobody there because it was a weekday, but it was actually pretty filled up. Almost every table was taken, and it was definitely more than I would expect for a weekday brunch experience when you would expect everybody to be at work. We came for lunch on a Monday and the place is small to begin with so most of the tables were full and very close to each other. You are in your neighbors convo by default. Our server was nice, welcomed us in and told us what the specials were. Throughout the lunch she may have become overwhelmed with the tables and the side work combined so it took us about 20 mins longer than it should have to finish up our lunch. Our food was good and I could agree with that the chicken could use a little more seasoning in the breading. The waffle was good and the fish with grits was not bad. Oh, what I've been hearing about Nana's is the truth. I was told it is one of the best brunch places in the area and that it feels like home. That it has a family atmosphere. Well, they were right! I now know Nana's has the best shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and chicken wings to do flips for! The waitress explained that the grits grain was a little different. I told her it was okay because I would like the dish anyway. She insisted and brought out a sample. I thought that was the sweetest, and, of course, I did like the dish. I also added three chicken wings that were really crispy and well seasoned. Also, the shrimp that came with the grits sat on a bed of sautéed veggies, adding more flavor. Another big plus was that the shrimp were jumbo shrimp and were seasoned to perfection, by the way, most places don't season the shrimp, leaving it bland. I can't remember what kind of grits the waitress told me they were, but I did like them; they brought on a different taste. The chicken and waffles were delicious and had a nice flavor. The omelette was tasty, although I prefer mine a bit fluffier. The potatoes were crispy and delicious and the biscuit was super fluffy. I'm not a big biscuit person but I loved theirs. The mango lemonade was super sweet, which I loved. The service was good, although the wait was a bit long. It's a small spot but decor is cute. I appreciated that they let us come in to wait even though they were closed. The workers seemed to genuinely enjoy working there and were helpful to each other. $75 for breakfast is a lot,but the food was really good. The restaurant space is tight but neat and clean. There's bar seating, high top tables, tables with chairs and half booths. My server was good and once seated food came out fast. As far as the food quality it was good. If you like chicken and waffles you will like theirs. Waffle was fluffy and fresh strawberries were great. The corned beef hash was tasty, and the grits were good, but be prepared because they're very well seasoned with some sort of creole type of seasoning so they are very savory. This place was worth the 35 minute drive from Decatur, GA! It is highly recommended to join the wait list via Yelp because the place stays packed. We joined an hour before heading out and once we got to the establishment, we had to probably wait another 10 minutes but the time went quickly. The server came to our table as soon as we sat down and went over the entire menu in great detail which helped in making a decision since there were so many great options. The grit cakes came with 3 cakes which was enough to share or could be a whole meal for one which were great! The mimosas had unique flavors and if you was to have two than just know, you're in store for a Sunday Funday. Before we could finish the appetizers, the main course meals had already arrived. Never have I seen a food order get placed and the food come out that fast. Very impressive. So many waffle choices for all the waffle lovers out there and the salmon Croquets were a hit! The only critique, which the table agreed unanimously, were the potatoes. The potatoes seemed to be grilled/roasted, not your typical breakfast potatoes you might expect and little to no seasoning or flavor. It was like eating plain unflavored potatoes. We use to visit the Conyers location often where we even met Nana. so once it closed I took the day off and we drove over and hour to the Mcdonaugh location. So disappointed! It's small, not comfortable and the if nana changed that chicken recipe it need to go back to original. Also for the price we use to get 3 amazing seasoned wings to in McDonaugh they served 2 small ones and the regular waffles that use to be fluffy and delicious lacked. Sadly I will not be back.
